THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER

วนั หนึง่ ในฤดูรอน ณ ทงุ นา มีต๊กั แตนตัวหนึ่งกำลงั กระโดดและรองเพลงอยา ง
สบายใจ ขณะเดยี วกนั มมี ดตวั หนึ่งเดินผา นมาพรอมดวยขาวโพดที่เก็บดว ยความ
พยายามไปไวในรงั ของมัน

One summer’s day, in a field, a Grasshopper was hopping about,
chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An Ant passed by, bearing along
with great effort an ear of corn he was taking to his nest.

“ทำไมเธอไมมาคยุ เลนกบั ฉนั ละ” ตัก๊ แตนถาม “แทนทจี่ ะทำใหช วี ิตของเธอมนั
วนุ วาย”

“Why don’t you come and chat with me,” asked the Grasshopper,
“instead of toiling your life away?”

“ฉนั กำลังชวยเกบ็ อาหารสำหรับฤดูหนาว” มดกลา ว “และฉันขอแนะนำใหเธอ
ทำแบบเดียวกันนะ”

“I am helping to store up food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and I
recommend you to do the same.”

“ทำไมตอ งไปกงั วลเรื่องหนาหนาวละ” ตกั๊ แตนกลา ว “เรามอี าหารมากมายอยู
แลว ในตอนน”้ี

“Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper. “We have got
plenty of food at present.”

แตอ ยางไรกต็ าม มดยงั เดนิ ไปเร่อื ย ๆ และทำงานหนักอยางตอ เนอ่ื ง
But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil.

เมอื่ ฤดหู นาวมาถงึ ตก๊ั แตนพบวาตวั เองกำลังจะตายจากความหิวโหย ในขณะที่
เห็นมดแจกจายขา วโพดและธญั พชื มากจากทเี่ ก็บ ดวยการทีพ่ วกมนั รวบรวมกนั ต้งั แตฤ ดู
รอ นนนั่ เอง

When winter came, the Grasshopper found itself dying of hunger,
while it saw the ants distributing, every day, corn and grain from the
stores they had collected in summer.

Then the Grasshopper knew…
