Page 1: Be inspired by the beauty of Melaka - a city rich in culture and history The History Melaka was founded in the 1400s by Parameswara, while fleeing from the enemies' threat, Parameswara was resting under a tree when he saw his followers' hunting dogs fighting with a small mouse deer before they were kicked by the deer. Amused by this incident, he named the place, Melaka, after the tree. During the 16th century, Melaka developed into the most important trading port in Southeast Asia. Due to its strategic position in the Straits of Melaka which provides a direct route between India and China, merchants from China, Arabia, India, and Europe were the regular traders then who passed through the port. Hence, all these gave birth to the legacy of a rich cultural blended heritage. Page 2: Discovery near hotel St. Peter's Church Peter's Church in the city of Melaka is the oldest operational Roman Catholic church in Malaysia. It was built in 1710 on land donated by the Dutchman Maryber Franz Amboer. At the time this area was outside the core city of Melaka. The well was built in 1459 by the followers of Hang Li Poh as the main water source in the town. Bastion Middleburg Bastion Middleburg was added to the existing city fortifications in 1660 following the capture of the city from the Portuguese in 1641 by the Dutch. The position of Chinese Kapitan was created by the Dutch colonial government of Melaka to enable an Asian representative of the colonial government to govern residents on their behalf. On the weekend (Friday-Sunday) the streets are closed to traffic and around 400 Jonker Street night market stalls open up selling local handicrafts and local cuisine. It is believed that he has set up a huge warehouse complex along the northern side of the Melaka River.
