FY23 NEWMAN ANNUAL REPORT

FY23 NEWMAN ANNUAL REPORT

NEWMAN CATHOLIC STUDENT CENTER PARISH | 2022/2023 ANNUAL REPORT What is Apollos, after all, and what is Paul? Ministers through whom you became believers, just as the Lord assigned each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth. 1 CORINTHIANS 3: 5-6

IDENTITY & MISSION We are the Newman Catholic Community, a parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh ministering to students, faculty, and staff of UNC and alumni, families, friends, and visitors to Chapel Hill. Our mission is to invite people to encounter Jesus Christ and accompany them towards deeper discipleship and commitment to continue His Mission. VISION Newman fosters growth in Christian discipleship through accepting the invitation to deeper union with God, joyfully responding to truly being Church in fellowship and community, responding to the call to serve the surrounding community and the world. Grounded by and in vibrant liturgical celebration, we strive to be a local Church community, growing together in our Catholic faith, where all might experience a sense of belonging, both parishioners who live in the greater Chapel Hill area and the UNC students for whom Newman is their home away from home. We envision a community of active participation and involvement in worship; spiritual growth and development; stewardship of time, talents, and treasure; and service in and for the surrounding community. CORE VALUES We value Spiritual Growth as disciples of Jesus Christ, to understand and experience Him more deeply and follow Him more closely in our daily lives. We value Community as indispensable to being a disciple of Jesus Christ, Who desires His followers to come together as one Body. We value Stewardship because the investment of our treasure, time, and talent signals real commitment to Jesus Christ and His Church. We value Service which fosters the dignity of every person because we strive to be faithful to the command of Jesus. As a church historian, I used to research the concrete effects of Paul’s assertion in 1 Corinthians, the theme of this report. Someone or some group would start a project, another would continue it, and still another would reap the benefits. The exact same, Spirit-filled, dynamic occurs here at Newman. In 1945 seeds were planted at the white house on Pittsboro Street, which in 1970 grew into a Parish/Campus Ministry with its own Church, and which expanded its physical presence once more in 2013. Seeds that were planted as undergraduates have blossomed into increasingly supportive alumni and young faithful Catholic leaders throughout North Carolina and beyond. A small faith formation program for children and young people in rented space off-campus has become a splendid inhouse program using all the spaces in the Activity Center. We can look back with gratefulness from whence we have come, all due to the grace of God the Master Gardener. We can also sense the good harvest that we are gathering at the moment: a vibrant and faith-filled campus ministry which grounds students as disciples of Jesus Christ in an environment increasingly indifferent to His message; regular continuing faith and spiritual formation opportunities which invite us all to a deeper response to the call of Christ Jesus; excellent Sunday worship with inspiring music and thoughtful and challenging homiletics; an admittedly smaller congregation, but one which is also more committed to the future; a growing group of volunteers in liturgical, service, catechetical, and hospitality roles, as people take more positive ownership of their community; parishioners sensing the need for more connection, and demonstrating that by faithfully attending monthly hospitality and periodic Newman Connect events. I can feel energy and excitement all around me, and can sense that it is positive and contagious. We are also leaning into a hopeful future when someone else will be reaping a good harvest: newly renovated hándicap facilities, as a first step towards more inclusivity and welcome; steps to make Sunday worship more conducive to young families; explorations of concrete programs to foster our growth as disciples along our own personal PATHS (Prayer, Attitude of openness, Taking part more, Heartfelt generosity, Service); creating more ties to alumni and parents of our student community, who entrust their daughters and sons to us. A hopeful future begins with courageous and audacious present trust that God continually acts to bring all things into goodness and life. The past, the present, and the future all involve you: the undergrads with all their energy and enthusiasm; the grad students and young adults looking for connections; the children and teens growing in their faith; the generous, supportive, and wise parishioners who shoulder much of the burden of holding this community together; the parents of students who follow us faithfully; the alumni who look back on their own years with fond nostalgia; the parish staff who are extremely generous with their time and their creativity. My and our thanks go to all the volunteers who make things happen, and to our generous and faithful donors: parishioners and friends near and far; those making recurring and sustaining pledges via Realm or the UNC portal; Annual Fund donors; lead and all other donors to our Summer ADA-accessibility Project; those who generously remember our special funds; those who remember Newman in estate planning; and those who make unexpected and thoughtful gifts which always seem to come at the right moment. Finally, our thanks go to those who because of illness, infirmity, or family obligations cannot be physically present with us often but are very present spiritually through the communion of saints. Your personal support of me and the staff at Newman, and your financial and moral support of our Newman community, edify me and confirm me in my ministry with you. Thank you again for who you are and what you do for Newman. Enjoy this annual report, a celebration of the Newman community! Peace and all good things! Friar Timothy Kulbicki, OFM Conf. Pastor and Director of Campus Ministry GOD CAUSED THE GROWTH

Newman’s catechesis program thrives with the understanding that faith formation is “lifelong, intended for all members and takes place within and involves the whole community” (National Directory for Catechesis #35B6). Young people ages 3 through 18 grow as disciples of Jesus Christ through study of Catholic Tradition, Scripture, sacramental life, service, and fellowship with the support of the parish community. ADA PROJECT In the Spring, Newman began construction of a new unisex ADA-compliant restroom on the first floor of the Activity Center adjacent and in addition to the existing women’s restroom. The work involved restructuring the office space next to the women’s restroom, adding a code-compliant custodial closet and ancillary storage space, and addressing associated abatement requirements. NEWMAN CAMPUS MINISTRY helps students to connect with one another as the Holy Spirit leads them to establish, rekindle, or mature in their relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church through the sacraments, parish-wide events, small faith groups, prayer, Carolina Catholic Nights, joy-filled retreats such as Carolina Awakening, service opportunities, and just hanging out with each other. 8/9 GROWING AS A COMMUNITY

The best news to report is that we went from a FY21/22 operating deficit of $167,558 to a FY22/23 operating surplus of $25,532; congratulations to us on a job well done! For the first time in several years, we were able to put $20,000 back into unrestricted savings. This is in addition to sacrificially raising $250,528 to successfully exceed our goal of $250,000 for the ADA summer renovation project. I, the Finance Council, the Parish Pastoral Council, and the Diocese are pleased with our overall financial position and our stewardship and generosity of resources. The vast majority of our income continues to come through Realm or the UNC Portal in scheduled giving: to all of you who have moved to scheduled digital giving, many thanks. Particular thanks to those who have opted for automatic recurring giving, as well as the many of you who make substantial occasional donations; you all know who you are! We continue to widen our pool of regular givers, both within and beyond the parish. Tight financial control of spending keeps Newman solvent, but 65% of expenditures are dedicated to staff compensation and debt service; there is little room for savings. Offertory increased 3.1% for the second straight year, reversing an earlier 4-year downward trend, and unrestricted development giving rose almost 15%. Newman’s annual operating budget is no longer dependent upon extraordinary windfalls such as bequests. I would like to highlight several key expenses beyond personnel. We budgeted $40,000 in income for Building Repair and Maintenance in the past financial year. Through your generosity, we collected $37,300 to defray such payments. We spent $18,000 on needed projects: sealed and striped both parking lots; installed a perimeter safety guardrail along the church exit driveway; upgraded exterior lighting; removed a dying tree; installed a new dishwasher, kitchen sink faucet, hot water mixing valve, and fittings in the Church kitchen; repaired the dishwasher in the Activity Center; painted and refreshed portions of both buildings; cleaned out the storm drains and sump pit; leveled bricks in the front church walkway; replaced ceiling tiles in the church; repaired furniture in both buildings; and finished multiple “to-do” list items. The remainder defrayed ordinary maintenance expenses. Our particular thanks go to the ReNewman Squad, whose volunteer labor kept costs to a minimum. We budgeted $7,500 in income for Charity Share. You generously contributed $14,423 in our special collections for this purpose, and we contributed $15,135 to seven charitable organizations. Additionally you directly donated $11,630 for St. Julia Christmas gift cards and $2,000 for special disaster relief. We budgeted $80,000 in income for Debt Service of our mortgages. You generously contributed $68,610 towards this total. We remain current on our debt servicing, paying $169,530 to the Diocese for both interest and principal. The amount not contributed via Special Collection was paid from our general operating income for the year. Additionally, following the relocation of Friars Tim and Bill to the Friary in Pittsboro, the Diocese appraised the value of the Durham Friary and bought out Newman’s share; as a result, we were able to make an extraordinary payment of $318,365 to reduce the principal of the Activity Center purchase loan. During the past financial year Newman received $8,500 in bequests from two estates; please consider Newman in your estate planning. Newman also received the following grants: $19,000 from the Diocese BAA for campus ministry; $6,435 from the Diocese for interest relief on one of our mortgages; and $16,802 from UNC-Chapel Hill for non-religious campus ministry support. FINANCIALS Takeaways: ࢝ We appear to have reached some stability in our finances; ࢝ We have enough savings to sustain us short-term; ࢝ We continue to engage in long-term financial planning and priority setting. 15
