these folks apparently do! Bagwal literally means “fight with stones”, so
it’s a pretty fitting name for a celebration that’s
all about hurling big stones at the opposing side.
Four clans gather to take part in the unique event,
despite the danger of getting seriously injured by
the stones flying through the air. In fact, bloody
wounds are the whole point of Bagwal as locals
believe that they honor a deity with sacrifice in the
form of blood. This year, the Bagwal stone-pelting
battle was supposed to be a low-key affair due to
Covid-19, but devotees turned up in large numbers,
eager to pelt the opposing clans with large stones.
Bagwal only lasted minutes, but that was enough to
leave 77 of the 300 brave devotees with injuries that
required subsequent medical attention. In 2019, the
number of injuries was about 100.
Villages gather to hurl cow dung at each other
Every year, the people of Kairuppala, a village in India’s Andhra Pradesh
state, engage in an epic cow dung cake battle that often leaves dozens
injured. They believe the tradition brings them good health and prosperity.
According to local legend the battle with the unconventional weapons
appeases a deity. Mounds of dried cow dung cakes are heaped in the
center of the village, and thousands of devotees split into two groups. As
participants arm themselves with cow dung cakes in one hand and towels
in the other (for protection), thousands more villagers climb on nearby
rooftops and in trees from where they can watch the battle without getting
