Objective
For this campaign our objective was to simply garner as much media coverage as possible in
order to raise the prominence of AskMen's list and brand overall.
Strategy
Our general strategy for this campaign was to create intriguing angles by comparing and
contrasting similarities and differences between the nominees.
Challenges
Our challenge was highlighting the accomplishments of the lesser known nominees.
Role
I was involved in the all phases including the brainstorming, researching, strategizing, material
drafting, pitching, media monitoring, and coverage reporting phases.

Quick Overview: Stand Up to Cancer Holiday Gift Guide
Client
Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) is a charitable program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation
(EIF). SU2C aims to raise significant funds for translational cancer research through online and
televised efforts. One of their methods of raising funds is through their Holiday Gift Guide items.
Objective
Our primary objective was to obtain media features for the Stand Up to Cancer Holiday Gift
Guide and ultimately increase the sales of SU2C's online store. Our secondary goal was to
promote SU2C's brand and initiatives.
Strategy
The first step in our strategy was to determine which publications planned on running a holiday
gift guide, the second step was to determine the publication close dates for their holiday gift
guides, the third step was to customize the items and pitch appropriately for each reporter.
Publications with widespread influence were offered product samples.
Challenges
Our biggest challenge for this project was that the items on the Holiday Gift Guide were a hard
sell compared to our competitors. The items were pricey and not very unique, so we had to be
very creative with our pitching angles.
Role
I was involved in the all phases including the brainstorming, researching, strategizing, material
drafting, pitching, media monitoring, and coverage reporting phases. Specifically, I drafted the
team's general pitch and was responsible for overseeing and updating a routine status report for
the client.
17 | Page
Media Targeting - Magazines: Since we were aiming to get placement for a Holiday Gift Guide, our
target months for coverage were November and December. We split media targeting up into two main
phases – long lead and short lead. We researched various outlets to determine their
November/December issue deadline. Afterwards, we sorted them into the appropriate phase - outlets
with deadlines months before November/December were long lead, and outlets with deadlines very
close to November/December were short lead. Below is an example.
Media Targeting – Online/Newspapers/Etc.: We discussed which types of reporters would be most
likely to cover this gift guide. Ultimately, we decided that Health and Medical, Philanthropy, Fashion,
and Family/Parenting reporters would be most likely to cover. Below are examples.
18 | Page
Pitch: I was responsible for drafting the general pitch below. However, based on the reporter’s recent

clothes to fitness editors, etc. We offered
samples to publications with widespread circulation and high definition images to the publications with
lesser circulation.
This year, SU2C has designed a number of affordable apparel and premium jewelry, which are
perfect gifts for anybody who supports the fight against cancer:
SU2C Alex and Ani gold and silver triple bangle sets with the signature arrow charm
($75.00), elegant SU2C reversible gold & silver pendants by Carolee ($48.00), cozy SU2C
eco-fleece sweatshirts ($39.99), SU2C adjustable survivor caps ($19.99), and more. All
products are available on SU2C’s website.
Below are brief descriptions and photos of the products available.

Status Reporting: I was responsible for regularly updating a document that kept track of
confirmed coverage set to run, strong interest, and notable declines from publications.
The purpose of this document was to keep my team on the same page, and to give the
client transparency. Below is an example.

TIME is an American weekly news magazine published in New York City founded in 1923.
TIME has the world's largest circulation for a weekly news magazine, and has a readership of 25
million, 20 million of which are based in the U.S.
Objective
Our objectives were to secure media coverage for the list announcement, garner media interest in
attending the event, and promote the brand overall.
Strategy
Considering the prominence of the client's name, we did not have to focus as much on the
persuasive aspect of pitching as we would with other lesser known clients. Instead, we focused
on pitching as wide as possible and making sure we reached every corner of the media that
would be interested in covering.
Challenges
The main challenge for this campaign was rising to the expectations of the client in terms of
obtaining a large amount of media coverage for both the announcement and event, which we
successfully did.
Role
I was involved in the researching, strategizing, material drafting, pitching, media monitoring, and
coverage reporting phases. I was also involved in planning and executing the event.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Einstein Industries Partners with Apple Inc. to Design New Writing Instrument
The Pencil features the world’s first erasable markings
NEW YORK, Jan. 14, 2015 – Einstein Industries, an international technology company with
offices in the USA, Germany, and Japan, has partnered with Apple Inc. to design The Pencil, a
unique, erasable writing tool. Einstein Industries will debut The Pencil at their 2015 Annual
Innovation Summit taking place at the Javits Center in New York City on February 7, 2015.
“There has been rising demand amongst consumers for a writing instrument more efficient than
the feather-pen, which has long caused frustration for its inability to neatly adjust mistakes,” said
George M. Einstein, President and CEO of Einstein Industries. “The Pencil will not only serve
as a replacement to the feather-pen, but it will change the way we approach writing as a whole.
The Pencil is constructed of three main components, the lead tip, the wooden body, and the
rubber eraser. The lead tip is made of finely ground graphite and clay powders, a unique mixture
that allows it to leave permanent markings but also be erased. The body is made of solid wood
which contains ridges to assist with grip. The rubber eraser is secured to the bottom of the pencil
by a piece of metal for convenient access.
“Each Pencil undergoes numerous tests during production in order to ensure that they are sturdy
and efficient,” said Jane Cole, Apple’s Director of Production. “It is the most compact writing
instrument available, and that is something I believe customers will truly appreciate.”

Description: Below is a sample of briefings that I prepared for clients. I have frequently created
material to strategically prepare clients for interviews/meetings. This document provides a background
on the reporter, the overall purpose of the meeting, a strategy in approaching the meeting and a list of
suggested questions on the expert’s topic.
Meeting ● Tim Hoeffner, DLA Piper
Attendees ● Caryn Schechtman, DLA Piper
● Max Stendahl, Law360
Ground Entire conversation will be on background, which means that Max may be taking notes and may
Rules use information gleaned from this meeting for a story. If he decides to pursue a story from the
meeting, he will follow up with you for an “on-the- record” comment.
About Max Stendahl is a senior reporter at Law 360 who covers securities law and white collar crime.
the He has covered class action such as Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of
journalist Justice cases. Stendahl joined Law 360 in 2011 and has previously worked at LexisNexis
Congressional as an Editorial Content Analyst. He graduated from Villanova University in 2010.
Strategy: Recent Articles:
http://www.law360.com/articles/475946/sec-head-white-warns-of-tougher-enforcement
http://www.law360.com/articles/475710/abu-dhabi-fund-says-7-5b-citi-row-belongs-in-arbitration
This is a “meet-and-greet,” an opportunity to grow your relationship. The objective is to increase
both personal rapport with the reporter and to grow the institutional relationship between DLA
Piper and Law 360.
Our strategy has three components:
1. Spend time talking about the reporter. The goal should be to get to know him a little
better and find out if we can help him with anything he is currently working on. It is
important to ask him questions and listen to him, rather than aggressively pitch him
stories.
● Ask what he is working on and what we can do to help.
● Maybe some background talk-where he is from – why he got into white collar
issues, what topics he finds most interesting or challenging to write about.
2. You should talk about yourself and/or current white collar issues and developments you
are seeing in the securities litigation and enforcement sectors. I find that it works best
when the interviewee comes prepared with 2-3 story ideas they can share. Below, please
48 | Page
find some suggested topics:
● Compared to last year the FBI is on pace for a 7% drop in white collar crime
recommendations – what do you think of this?
● Last Tuesday (9/24) state prosecutors and legal experts announced a series of
proposals that would beef up white collar crime laws – Is this necessary? What do
you think of the current state of white collar crime laws?
● What trends are you seeing in white collar crime cases recently?
● Any other topics you are not already seeing in the press are always of interest to
journalists.
3. Follow up after the meeting. I will contact Max to thank him after the meeting, but the
goal is for him to be your contact, not mine. Ideally, you would want to send him a quick
thank you (his contact information is below), and then send him a quick note here and
there-ideally sharing some insights on developing news.
