What our
students say

I have a small hairdressing business on Skye. Lots of brides are
wanting beauty therapies as well as hairstylists. I thought my
own business would grow if I could offer both as a package
in my salon.
I have really enjoyed studying. Our lecturer is excellent and it makes
such a difference having someone who is a practising beautician
teaching us. She is completely up to date with the beauty therapy
industry. She shares her own practical business expertise, bringing a
fresh insight. I’ve learned so much: basic skills and technical
background information which gives deeper understanding. I feel ready
now to expand what I offer in my own business.

What our
students say

I studied Nat 4 Fashion and Textiles with the college as part of
the school college partnership.
I had a spell away and then returned to study this course. I love how
hands-on this course is and I have learnt a lot. Don’t let the word
“fashion” scare you off. You don’t have to religiously watch fashion
shows and own every issue of Vogue to enjoy this course! The most
important thing for me has been learning the ins and outs of pattern
making and sewing, but also the social aspect of meeting new people.
I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone. I’m going on to
study HND in Fashion Technology at Glasgow Clyde College.

Theo Thomson. NC Fashion and Design

I’ve had quite a journey with college!
I started with NC Fashion and Design. I had always
wanted to learn how to sew. We covered all the basic
skills and I did learn to sew but I also learned about textiles
and how to draw and create a block pattern. This is a massive
skill – the more you do it the easier it becomes, and you really
understand how a garment is made and what is possible.
After that year, I returned one day a week to work on Advanced
Textiles and in 2019, I joined HNC Textiles. I loved this course.
We developed our skills with new techniques in sewing and in
textile creation from dyeing, pleating and decoration.
I am now doing mixed media and painting art classes and
this makes me realise how all these art forms are tied
together. So much of fashion and textile design starts with drawing and the use of colour. I
have been exploring and finding my style which is abstract.
I have found my place and I’ll play with ink and watercolour and in the end I will bring in
textiles with hand stitching and decoration. I have taken something from each course I have
done. It’s brilliant.

What our
students say

I started with NC Music, progressed onto HNC Music and am
now studying HND Music.
I began with no music qualifications but a real love of rhythm guitar
which I knew I wanted to develop, move on to lead playing and also
learn bass and gain more confidence in writing and singing my own
songs. The HNC allowed me to develop so many skills in both theory
and practical music making and I was able to specialise in song
writing. We learn how to use Digital Audio Workstations and that
allowed me to create an EP.

I am now studying HND Music. It felt like a natural progression and
will further my understanding of what I can achieve and what I want to
do. Challenge is good and it helps with being creative.

Iain Macdonald. HND Music

I moved from the USA to fulfil a dream to study music.
I studied accordion while completing the HNC and now I'm studying
composition for the HND. Both my teachers are professional musicians.
I love the breadth of this course: the focus on building our careers, as
well as the creative freedom, the support while building our portfolios of
work and the opportunities to co-write.
Here, lecturers and support staff work closely together and are friends
and colleagues in the best sense of the word – they’re willing to share
information and make your student experience as positive as possible.
College staff have a personal attitude towards the work they do with their
students. They seem to view their work as an opportunity to enrich the
community and place where they live.
I have loved my time in Fort William.

What our

Coming to college was a positive step for me.
Learning here was so different and I have really enjoyed the course.
I am excited about coming in and learning something I am really
intrigued by. I take it home and I think about it and want to find out more.
Everyone in class is the same. It is such a positive environment. On my
work placement, I found that everything I had learned in class was
relevant and how important all the background knowledge I had covered
was when putting it into practice. I plan to study further or find
employment in a social care setting.

What our
students say

Signing up to the HNC Social
Services has been life changing
for both of us.
Neither of us could have imagined
that we would find ourselves back
in a classroom, especially with
young families at home and with
such an extended break from
formal learning. Completing this
course gave us the confidence and
opportunity to further our
education. Despite having families at home, we were supported by
the college and our lecturer, Andy Gibb, who gave us the courage
and determination to pursue our dream in becoming nurses. With
young families, being able to start the journey back into education
close to home was very important. With our newfound confidence
and determination and support from college, we progressed onto BSc Adult Nursing with UHI.
We are both proud that one day we will graduate from UHI to serve the NHS as qualified,
experienced nurses.
