GEORGIA AND
THE CIVIL WAR

WILLIAM HARTSFIELD

● William Hartsfield was an active
to support Atlanta for the city to
be “to busy to hate”. He was a
mayor from 1937 to 1961. He was
part of the Colvin rights
movement and he help support
the racial tolerance and
desegregation. He had helped
with public schools and made the
population of Georgia increased
by the Hartsfield airport named
after him. As they name because
of his honor.

IVAN ALLEN JR.

● Ivan Allen jr. was Atlanta’s mayor
from 1962 to 1970. He was also a
support for the civil rights act. He
had removed all the public signs of
segregation and desegregated the
cafeteria. He also continue the big
growth of they city by building the
interstate- 285 and M.A.R.TA. (
metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit
Authority) He also helped with the
1966 olympics and brought the
Falcons, the Hawks, and the Braves
to Atlanta.

ELLIS ARNALL

● Ellis Arnall was a Georgia general
assembly. He was known as
Georgia’s progressive governor.
Ellis Arnall accomplished as
governor by creating for restoring
accreditation to the state
institutions of higher learning,
abolishing poll tax, lower down the
voting age to 18, and established a
teacher retirement. He was a
successful businessman and
lawyer. He was also part of the
three government controversy.

THREE GOVERNMENT CONTROVERSY

● The three governor controversy was
a governor race between Herman
Talmadge, Ellis Arnall, and Melvin
Thompson. The General assembly
had elected Herman Talmadge
because he was a relative to
Eugene Talmadge. And they had
believe that he would continue with
the segregation. But on the other
hand the Supreme Court had
elected Melvin Thompson as
governor. Ellis Arnall had upheld
the Supreme Court by preventing
the blacks from voting.

1964 CIVIL RIGHTS
ACT

● The civil rights act was by
Lyndon B. Johnson. Before this
act the brown v. Board of
education had ended
segregation.This was when
segregation had ended and
the banning of discrimination
of color, religion, and race.
Martin Luther king Jr. was in
this act to help with freedom.

LESTER MADDOX

● Lester Maddox was with
segregation and he passed the civil
rights act of 1964. He was the 75th
governor of Georgia. He had
opened up a cafeteria where he did
not want to serve any African
American because of the civil rights
act. During this time, segregation
had ended so many people did not
agree with his ideas. So he was
fined for $200 everyday. After this
consequence he helped African
Americans to government systems.

BROWN V. BOARD OF
EDUCATION

● The brown v. Board of education
was an act that lead to the
segregation of students. This was
when different color people had to
go to certain schools because of
their race or religion. This was
really unfair because they couldn’t
go to school that was near them.
They would have to go further.
African Americans also got treated
unequally. So this lead to the
sibley commission.

SIBLEY COMMISSION

● The sibley commission was
the effect of the brown v.
Board of education. This was
when people would say that
they would rather stay home
and not got to school rather
than going to school with
African Americans. They
would rather not get there
education than being polite.
So the federal government
had agree and schools
weren’t segregated anymore.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

● Martin Luther king was most known as
the Georgia leadership in the civil
rights movement. Martin Luther king
was a leader and he wanted to
combat civilian inequality with a
nonviolent protest. He also started a
march on Washington and the
Southern Christian Leadership
conference. He also helped with
voting registration, and won a Nobel
peace prize. He mad a “I had a dream”
speech that lead everyone the be
inspired by his words. This brought
the colors, race, and religion to be
together.

MARCH ON WASHINGTON

● The March on Washington was
in 1963. Over 250,000 civil rights
activists had come together in
Washington to push and
promote the civil rights
movement. This was when
Martin Luther king had gave
h8s “I had a dream” speech. This
encourage for the people to
come together and and the
passing of the civil rights
movement.

SOUTH CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP
CONFERENCE

● The Southern Christian Leadership
conference was after the March on
Washington in 1963. This was lead by
Martin Luther King. It was an
organization which it supported the
southern religious leader. It was also
a protest called the Albany movement
and for the economic improvements
of African Americans throughout the
south. Today the SCLC helps with
healthcare prisons reform, fair
treatment of refugees, and job site
safety.

JOHN LEWIS

● John Lewis was apart of Georgia
history through his leadership in
the civil rights movement. He
started an organization of the
student nonviolent coordinating
committee helped with Martin
Luther king king. He had protest
for the sit in- Jim crows laws and
showed his dedication of
freedom rides. He had helped
with the March on Washington
and freedom. He had helped with
the exercise of the right to vote.

STUDENT NONVIOLENT
COORDINATING COMMITTEE

● The student nonviolent
coordinating committee he was
a protest for the civil rights. It
was farm in North Carolina and
worked with the southern
leadership conference and
focused on peaceful and
nonviolent protest. It was known
for the sit-ins, freedom rides
and the freedom summer in
Mississippi this focus on the
Albany movements in Atlanta.

JIMMY CARTER

● Jimmy carter was a state
senator, governor, and the
only person from Georgia to
be elected as president. He
was also the 2nd person to
win the Nobel peace prize. He
was the chairman of the
education committee. As
governor he improved
Georgia education, justice,
and mental health systems.

1996 OLYMPICS

● The 1966 olympics was a host of games
that Atlanta had to prepare for. They
had build plugin parks, repaired
sidewalks, and added more hotel room.
The atlanta olympics had helped
remove urban decay. Which lead to the
improvements of apartments, hotels,
and business structure. It also brought
people to the city to watch the games.
This helped Georgia’s economy to
increase. It also gave Atlanta its name
and it also mad Atlanta more popular.
