About the dictionary

Combining our strength
Mini Dictionary was created within the project partnership as a result of the activities
amongst students and participants in the mobility C4 in Slovenia, carried out within
the Erasmus+ project Multi-culturally sensitive generation in October 2017. It was
designed by Slovenian Erasmus+ team with team manager Mojca Saje. The included
phrases and vocabulary are the project's results made by all students and teachers
from all six partner schools.

The assignment of mobility in Slovenia was dealing with the stereotypes about the
ethnies. During formal and non-formal gatherings and meetings with the paticipants
and representatives of different ethnies, we enabled good cooperation and
interactions among the participants, encouraging respectful relationships and
building of friendships which largely contributed in diminishing of the ethnic
stereotypes and developing strategies to increase tolerance towards differences.

4

How did we work?
We prepared various workshops with the aim of developing social, emotional and
intercultural competences. Students took part in activities which required non-verbal
communication, bodily movement, cooperation and trust building among the
members, encouraging respectful relationships and the understanding of each other.
They were raising the awareness of the ethnic stereotypes through getting to know
the similarities and differences among different nations as well as within the same
nation.
In order to facilitate the overcoming of prejudice and stereotypes about foreigners,
the mobility was organized in a way which enabled participants to spend together as
much time as possible and get to know each other through sports, cultural and social
activities.

We organized a Mini Olympics with some winter sport disciplines, we socialized on a
one day trip around Slovenia and on the last day we prepared a cultural day focusing
on getting to know different nations, their customs, language, music, dance, culinary
tradition, literature, etc.

5

Each ethny prepared a short artistic moment and present different items in order to
introduce us into their language, culture and traditions. Video recordings from these
presentations were reunited under the title “The ethnies Carnival”.

Students socialized throughout the week and especially on a one day trip, during
which they had the opportunity to see some natural and cultural attractions of
Slovenia. This kind of socializing was very relaxed and consequently the pupils got to
know each other on a more personal level while communicating in a foreign language
and thus developing their language competences.

6

Their task during the trip was to exchange some basic vocabulary and phrases in
somebody else’s language (for example greetings, polite expressions and basic
questions…) which they collected in the tables. Students participants suggested and
then exchanged some basic vocabulary and phrases in somebody else’s language
which we used in this mini dictionary.
Students also worked hard at the workshops in the school to complete the basic
vocabulary and phrases in this mini dictionary. They fulfilled the tables with suggested
words and introduced their languages with dialogues at the presentations on the
market stalls at the cultural day on the final day of our mobility.

We finished the dictionary as our homework after the mobility. It combines some
basic vocabulary and phrases from all of our six languages such as greetings, polite
expressions, emotions and basic phrases.
Mini video dictionary
We thought it would also be interesting to
hear pronunciation in foreign partner
languages. So we additionally made a video
part of the dictionary, which we made with
combining six short videos from every
partner reading in their own languages.
In this short videos students talk and read
some basic sentences in their own languages as they did at our presentations on the
stalls the final day of our mobility in Slovenia. We later added English subtitles and
put all of the six videos in one mini video dictionary.

And now let's learn partners' languages…
