BACKGROUND Formerly known as School of Social Development (SSD), the School of Applied Psychology, Social Work and Policy was established in July 2011 (after restructuring from the College system in 2008, Faculty system in 2003 and School system prior to 2003). SAPSP offers programmes in the field of Counselling, Correctional Sciences, Psychology, Social Studies, and Social Work. To establish the SAPSP as an institution of excellence and reference in the field of social development. To be an institution of academic excellence and regional reference in the field of social development 1. Produce graduates with character, competence and capability, 2. Produce professional graduates who possess conceptual, analytical and application skills; 3. Undertake research, publication and consultation services in the field of social development; 4. Foster a culture of human knowledge that can be applied in the community and organizations. BACKGROUND VISION MISSION OBJECTIVE 01


SAPSP DEAN Prof. Madya Dr. MD. ZAWAWI ABU BAKAR School of Applied Psychology, Policy and Social Work (SAPSP) offers programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. For programs at the bachelor’s level, so far SAPSP offers two programs, namely the Bachelor of Social Work with Honors and the Bachelor of Counseling with Honors. While at the Postgraduate level, SAPSP offers a Master of Social Work with Coursework, a Master of Counseling Science with Coursework and a Master of Correctional Science with Coursework. The School also offers Postgraduate Programs through the research mode namely Master of Arts (Social Work), Master of Arts (Psychology), and Master of Science (Counseling). While at the Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) level, there are several fields of study offered namely Social Work, Social Studies, Counselling, Correctional and Psychology. In addition, SAPSP also conducts many Executive Certificate programs, Training Programs and Post Graduate Diplomas to various agencies and organizations such as the Malaysian Social Welfare Department, the Malaysian Prison Department, SOCSO, SUK Johor and others. Academic staff and expertise from SAPSP have contributed a lot to the community, government and private agencies such as lectures, workshops and training. In addition, studies, publication of books and journals as well as consulting are also given to various parties that collaborate with SAPSP. This includes involvement with the community through community service in line with efforts to make the existence of SAPSP in particu02

PROGRAMME COURSE Bachelor of Counseling Bachelor of Social Master of Arts (Psychology) The Bachelor of Counseling program aims to produce trained and competent counselors. This programme offers a comprehensive coverage of knowledge in counseling with strict emphasis on producing highly trained professional counselors. The Bachelor of Social Work Management (BSWM) programme aims to produce trained and competent generalist social workers. This programme integrates the knowledge and social work skills in both aspects of theory and practice. The Master of Arts (M.A. Psychology) programme is a research based programme designed for psychology undergraduates who wish to further their study in the field of psychology. Master of Scence (Counselling) The Master of Science (Counselling) programme is a 52 credit hour programme designed for people who want to work as licensed professionals in the counseling field. As such applicants for the programme should pass an interview and/or psychology test before being granted candidature. Master of Social Work The Master of Social Work (MSW) programme is the the latest offering by the programme. This programme offers a coursework-based degree for students who wish to obtain as masters degree via coursework and a research project. Master of Science (Correctional Science) Postgraduate Diploma The Postgraduate Diploma in Correctional Science programme is a 30 credit hour programme designed for individuals with some academic or practice background in counselling and psychology who wish to obtain a postgraduate diploma in the field of correctional science. Doctor of Philosphy The Doctor of Philosophy programme is a comprehensive programme offered to individuals who wish to specialize in any particular areas of psychology, sociology, social work, social policy, counselling, correctional, and social studies 05


WHAT WE OFFER PROGRAMME COURSE In general, all academic programmes are under the purview of academic departments. At present, the school only has oneacademic department. The Department of Psychology and Social Work is the sole department responsible for all programmes currently offered by the school. It houses two disciplinary sections - psychology and counseling, and social work - under one roof. Each sections caters for programmes and activities that are relevant to each discipilinary areas. Even though each sections offers programmes that cater for different disciplinary areas, in terms of academic and students affairs, both sections are under the purview of a single Departmental Head Administrative wise, the Departmental Head and the Dean are assisted by an Assistant Registrar (see Diagram below). ONLINE NEWS & MEDIA PORTAL S A P S P SAPSP Online: 23 June 2022. A total of 11 prison officers received letters of offer to continue their studies for the master’s and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) at the Malaysian Prison College, this morning. The offer letter was delivered by the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Dr. Ismail Mohamad Said to seven officers who will follow the PhD program in correctional studies, while the rest are in the master’s program. “ Learning is a lifelong process.” 14 Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) through the Center for Applied Psychology, Policy and Social Work (SAPSP) and the Malaysian Prisons Department (JPM) have held joint discussions regarding the issue of offering postgraduate programs, research and publication for mutual benefit. The desire was achieved after a visit led by the Dean of SAPSP, Prof. Associate Dr. Md Zawawi Abu Bakar to the Commissioner General of Prisons (KJP), Dato’ Nordin Muhamad in his office, recently.
