‘Prepare the soil, before you begin planting’ Dear Friends, I am looking forward to settling into the Rectory and beginning my ministry among you. Inevitably, at the start of a new ministry there is a sense of excitement, hope and expectation after a long time of waiting and wondering. It is very tempting for everyone, including the new Rector, to throw ourselves into a flurry of activity and start lots of new and exciting things. At my interview for this post, I was asked to do a five-minute presentation on my three key priorities for helping our churches to grow in my first 18 months here. But to enable us to growing in God, take root and to bear fruit, I would want them to be our priorities, that we pray about and discern together. If you are a keen gardener or you own an allotment you will know how important it is to prepare the soil well before you begin planting, and that will be my plan for the Benefice in these first few months. This will be a time of preparation, and for this I have drawn inspiration from Stephen Cottrell (Archbishop of York) in his book ‘Hit the ground Kneeling.’ It is the exact opposite of what we would normally expect to do in a new job – hit the ground running – but I have found his insights very helpful. He suggests: ‘The leader will allow himself/ herself to be led by instinct, by collaboration, by listening to the wisdom and experience of others, and by discernment; he or she will be someone who prizes collaboration, who values working with others and who considers prayer and contemplation to be 3

5 leadership 's most vital task’ This process of collaboration, listening, and prayerful discernment is crucial to identifying our vision and direction, and I think we could all do with hitting the ground kneeling! Many of you have been keeping the show on the road and you may be feeling a little tired, so I anticipate using this time to get to know you better, to hear about your joys, your challenges, and your hopes, and to be attentive to your well-being. I aim to meet as many people as possible in these first few important months, and the first opportunity to do this is at my licensing by the Rt Revd Martin Seeley, Bishop of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich on Thursday 5 October at 7.30pm at St Mary’s, Rougham. I am delighted that the school and choir will be singing anthems from 7pm, and you are asked to be seated by 7.25pm. The service will be followed by a reception. On Sunday 15th October I will be at St Nicolas, Rushbrooke for a Meet and Greet from 2pm – do pop in for a chat and some refreshments; and on Sunday 29th October you are warmly invited to a Celebration Service at All Saints, Beyton at 10.30am, followed by a Bring and Share lunch and a chance to chat. This is my opportunity to say thank you to all of you who use your gifts and talents to contribute to the churches and communities. You have achieved so much already, and there is a real sense of commitment, enthusiasm and optimism. I welcome the chance to meet you, to work with you and to build on what you are doing, so that, together, all of us can flourish. Blessings, Julia Lall - – – – – – – – – –

angel bombing our villages! Christmas (there, I’ve said it) may seem a long way off, but for the Angel Bombers it’s time to start thinking about knitting, so that the woolly heavenly host is ready to fly in December, writes Debbie Marshall. For those not familiar with Angel Bombing, small knitted angels are placed around villages, each bearing a message of blessing. Each finder will then take the angel and the message home. These have been very popular over the past few years and have become a feature of the villages’ Christmas preparations. If you can help by knitting angels, that would be great!Anything from a single angel to an entire throng would be welcome. Once made, they need to be handed in by Saturday 16th December, so that they can have their labels added and be taken into church on Sunday 17th before being distributed around the villages. They can be left with di Ruddock (Rougham, 01359 270731), Sarah lock (Hessett, 01359 271877), or debbie Marshall (Beyton, 01359 271314). Any pattern can be used (an example appears online in last month’s issue) but please remember to add a hanging loop. Floodlight sponsor news Our Rougham Church floodlighting has been sponsored... JayNe WORley (20th October 2012) Remembering a loving wife, Mother & Grandma Graham, Aaron, Gemma, Arthur & Louis, Scott & Jessamy If you would like to sponsor the lights at any of our churches (in memory of a relative or friend or just to help with the costs) then please contact: ROugHaM: Di Ruddock 01359 270731 [email protected] BeytON & HeSSett: Timothy Elliot 01359 270365 [email protected] 12 Hessett walks update We had a very pleasant shorter walk in August around the outskirts of Risby with some beautiful views across the fields and an enjoyable brunch in the cafe afterwards followed by a wander round the antiques, writes Sally Spicer. Great to see old and new faces. Back in June, we enjoyed a lovely walk in Bradfield woods followed by a tasty lunch at the Felsham Six Bells. The next walk will be on Saturday 21 October.Place and time yet to be arranged but please let me know if you would like to be added to my list of regular walkers.

13 West Suffolk Hospital Chaplaincy When the NHS was set up in 1948, the need for spiritual health was recognised as part of our general heath and well-being. All hospitals now have chapels and chaplains, writes Graham Rendle. The West Suffolk Hospital currently has two full-time chaplains and a number of part-time volunteers who provide comfort and support for patients, relatives and, just as important, the hospital staff from porters and cleaners to doctors and nurses. Chaplains are available day and night 24/7. They support anyone whatever their faith or belief, religious or non-religious or none. The chaplains will visit anyone you know in West Suffolk Hospital. There are many opportunities to help in the hospital as a volunteer – it can be interesting and rewarding work. If you would like more details contact me at on 01359 270924 or West Suffolk Hospital Chaplaincy on 01284 712704 or out of hours 01284 713000. Special Service for Bury drop in On Sunday 8 October at 4.30 pm a special service will take place at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, to celebrate the ongoing work of Bury Drop In among the homeless and vulnerably housed. The service, led by the Dean of St Edmundsbury and the chair of the Bury Drop In Trustees, will include prayers to remember the lives of those who have died in the past year from the Bury Drop In community. Bury Drop In is a Christian Charity, supported broadly by churches across the town and sustained by numerous local businesses, volunteers and organisations, including West Suffolk Council and Bury Town Council, that exists to care for and serve the homeless and vulnerably housed in Bury St. Edmunds.

16 Poets’ Corner autumn by T. E. Hulme Suggested by Helen Elliot A touch of cold in the autumn night – I walked abroad and saw the ruddy moon lean over a hedge like a red-faced farmer. I did not stop to speak, but nodded, and round about were the wistful stars with white faces like town children. If you have a favourite poem, let us know at [email protected] Check out the Men’s Shed This is a worldwide organisation that started in Australia in the 1980s, writes Graham Rendle. As in the title, it is a place – a shed (think big!) – where men can come together, stay productive, socialise and contribute to the community. I am a member of the Men’s Shed in Stowmarket – part of the Meadlands social club (the old ICI paints social club). It is a wellorganised group of retired men with a large woodworking shed with good equipment where people make everything from bird boxes to benches. The group does projects for the local community, schools etc, making picnic tables for local parks (on behalf of the local council) and mud kitchens out of old pallets for primary school playgounds. It is a place where we can get together over a cup of tea and talk about our aches and pains and share experiences. The group includes a clock-maker, marine ship builder, college lecturer, HGV drivers, yachting-instructor – all coming together and sharing their skills. The Meadlands Social Club also has an indoor bowling green, a good club house with drinks and light lunches.

21 Why you should fall for ferns yvonne Harbutt highlights an unusual garden addition Ferns are beautiful, exotic foliage plants which deserve a spot in every garden. Choose a shady corner, a spot in dappled shade or a woodland area where their architectural structure will provide impressive displays of lush leafy foliage. Alternatively, they will grow well under trees or in containers where they can be located as focal points to add structure to areas of the garden. There are some varieties which tolerate a sunny/partial situation- look for Asplenium Petra and Dryopteris Crispa or Matteuccia Nestor. Ferns prefer damp, welldrained soil which is rich in nutrients. Woodland areas or close to water features and ponds are ideal. At the end of the season top dress with bark or organic matter which will provide a mulch for winter protection. Easy to grow and low maintenance, their heights range from compact varieties at around 30cm to mid-range at 100cm up to larger spreading specimens growing to 1.5 metres. Some are evergreen while others are deciduous and will die back during the winter months. As spring arrives, their fronds begin to emerge, unfurling gracefully alongside other plants starting to awaken for the coming season. These ornamental plants offer layers of natural texture and provide an ideal backdrop or ground cover in the borders. As well as the popular range of green shades, there are also others which add interest with their silvery tones, burgundy hues and coppery tipped leaves. Foliage plants can often be understated in the garden, this cannot be said of ferns, find them a space if you have the room. Some popular choices include Polystrichum, Athyrium, Adiantum and Matteuccia. Contact Yvonne Harbutt at Rougham Hall Nurseries on 01359 270577 or visit www.rhn.me.uk
