Jubilee – Let the Ram’s Horn sound!

Dear Rougham, Beyton, Hessett and Rushbrooke parishioners,

What has a ram’s horn got to do with Jubilee?
Jubilee is, in fact, derived from a very early Bible commandment

that God gave to the Israelites when they came into the Promised
Land. And a Rams horn trumpet was sounded.(See inside the back
cover for more on this.)

One of my memories at school was the headmaster coming into a
maths class and saying “The King has died”. The boy next to me said
“Which one?” That’s because we had two brothers in the school
whose surname was King. In fact, King George VI had died while
Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were in Kenya.

A year later we had a special sports and fete day to mark the
coronation.

After breakfast we listened to the BBC Home Service on the
“wireless”. Very few people had a television in those days and certainly
no one at my school.

It’s fair to say that a lot has happened in the 70 years since that day.

A few years ago I took communion to the late Captain and Mrs Creed
who lived in Hessett. He had joined the Royal Navy Reserve in the
late 1930s because he loved sailing.

Called up he served in the navy during World War Two. For the
Coronation, troops lined the streets in London for the parades. He was
in charge of the sailors. His wife to be, Barbara, was at that time a
senior rank in the WRNS, and had served with distinction in the war,
and she was in charge of the women.

As a result they met and married. Barbara had to resign as in those
days married women were not allowed to serve. They moved to Bury
St Edmunds where Captain Creed was managing director of the Boby
farm machinery factory – which once stood where Waitrose is now.
Much of the factory is now in the Stowmarket open air museum.

Our country is unique in having the Queen as both head of state and

Queen honours her King

Reverend Canon tiffer Robinson pays tribute to
70 remarkable years of service

It is finally here: the Jubilee we’ve all been waiting for: 70 years our
Queen!

I say all, perhaps not everyone is so keen on celebrating, and our
sympathies must be with our more republican brothers and sisters
who may find the next weekend quite a challenge.

For her Silver jubilee in 1977 the Sex Pistols released “God save
the Queen” which accused the monarchy of being a “fascist regime”
and got to Number 2 in the charts. For the Platinum jubilee it is being
rereleased, but lead singer Johnny Rotten said in an interview recently
that despite his anti-monarchist views he had actually always rather
liked the Queen. It’s quite something when even your detractors who
oppose everything you represent and stand for have to admit that you
are really pretty good!

I have to agree with him, I think she’s done a marvellous job, and
it’s not been easy. I wouldn’t swap jobs with her for the world, and I
suspect most of us would have retired long ago and let someone else
take the reigns (ho, ho). Her sense of duty, self sacrifice, alongside
her sense of fun and independence are enduring qualities that have
made her well suited to the role.

The bible contains some seemingly paradoxical views about
monarchs. It starts out clear that Kings and Queens are a ‘Bad Idea’,
because for the people of Israel, God was their king, and had always

put in place leaders for the people who came and went, but God’s
care and leadership was constant.

God tells the people that monarchs are bad for the economy, taking
the best men and women as servants and needing so many resources
for their palaces, and can quickly become power crazed and
oppressive.

The people of Israel complained that they wanted one anyway,
because all the other nations had them, and so God relents, and gives
them Saul. King Saul starts off well, but quickly goes off the boil, so
instead King David is anointed in his place. David was a fantastic King,
who led the people in the worship of God, but made several pretty big
mistakes too. He is promised that one of his descendents will one day
rule just as he has, not just for a time, but for all eternity.

Predictably, his son Solomon also ends up leading the people
astray, and from then on, with a few exceptions, all the Kings are
scoundrels, and some of the Queens as well, until eventually the
monarchy largely dies out during one of the exiles.

The prophecy, however, remained, and the people of Israel waited
centuries for a King who would rule like David, born of David’s town,
Bethlehem. A King who serves the people, and does not lord over
them. A King who is not just a king for a decade or even 70 years, but
for all eternity, whose kingdom is unlike any earthly kingdom we know.

Our Queen has spoken about this King, her King, in these terms:
“For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace... is an inspiration
and an anchor in my life. A role model of reconciliation and
forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance and
healing.... God sent his only son ‘to serve, not to be served... Although
we are capable of great acts of kindness, history teaches us that we
sometimes need saving from ourselves – from our recklessness or
our greed. God sent into the world a unique person – neither a
philosopher nor a general (important though they are) – but a Saviour,
with the power to forgive.”

As we celebrate the platinum Jubilee, we give thanks for our Queen,
for her service, but also for her faith, and her willingness to speak
about her faith in Jesus Christ, the King of Kings.

Brettenham and Thorpe Morieux and Rural Dean of Lavenham.

A history of Beyton

and Hesset Village Hall

tony Ciorra, Chairman of the Beyton and Hessett Village
Hall, searches the archives for the full story

The original Hall was known as the Old Church Room, which was first built
in 1909. The Hall was purchased from Thurston with funds raised by the
Church and was re-erected on the Village Hall site. Evidently it had a dirt
floor covered by a cloth and was sited in the corner of the old Rectory plot.

The original hall was erected apparently without the permission of the
Church Commissioners, but the Rector had allowed it to be built on the land.
The Church Rectory was sold in 1962 and the Village Hall land was not
included in the sale.

There was some confusion as to who owned the Village Hall site. In 1964
after some legal debate, it appears that the Diocesan Board were thinking
that the Village should own the site. In 1977 the ownership became unclear
again and in 1978 Hessett Community Council, which has since closed,
was considering purchasing the site.

It was about this time that the idea for the Pre-Cast Concrete building
that we now have was being formed and, in December 1980, the Town

Planning office was approached for guidance. Some dates from the
archives:

30 March 1981: The current format for the Beyton and Hessett Village
Hall Committee was first formed, with the Rev Anthony Marsh as the first
chairperson. Hessett Community Council, which had the initial funds for the
new Hall Pre-Cast building, needed further funds to complete the building.
So, the new Beyton and Hessett Village Hall Committee was formed, which
was designed to include representatives from Beyton.

6 July 1981: Planning approval was sought. There were matters of
appearance and safety that had to be addressed. On 4 September 1981:
Planning Permission was finally granted.

12 September 1981: Hessett Community Council decided unanimously
to purchase the Terran Concrete Building for £977.50. The cost increased
to nearly £1,100 when the order was eventually placed.

1981: Mid Suffolk Council provided a grant, that was paid in instalments
as the works progressed,

1981: The Community Council offered to do the work via their Job
Opportunity Scheme, at the time the estimated cost was £3,500 over a
period of 40 weeks to build it.

There was a draft Lease and Deed agreement in late 1981. On 2
December the current Lease and Deed agreement was approved by the
Church Commissioners, and it was finally engrossed on 3 february 1982.

March 1982: There was a formal announcement to Beyton proposing the
new Village Hall and looking for support from Beyton Village Association.

7 April 1982: Beyton Village Association contributed £2,000 towards the
project and in May 1982 the 50-year lease was formed by the Glebe

Committee which was part of the Diocesan Globe Committee.
In May 1982 final agreements for the funding for the Youth Training

Scheme were being negotiated but this was considered too slow, and a
private contractor was commissioned, led by Rice and Levett, and by this
time the estimated cost had risen to £6,695 at that time (sadly undated).

The Community Council for Suffolk also provided a loan for £750 (to be
paid back over five years with the final payment due in July 1987) to help
with increased costs.

november 1982: The Hall works were complete except for the finish to
the car park.

May 1984: The loan was paid off three years earlier than required, thanks
to local fund raising. The earlier total estimate for all the works was £6,977.
There are many letters requesting extra grants during the progress of the
works to meet the bills, including the Loan guaranteed by Rev Anthony
Marsh for £750. The Final cost of the Hall was £10,414 to build and furnish.
Some £2,532 came from Mid Suffolk District Council, £2,000 from the
Beyton Village Association, Hessett Community Council paid for the
concrete prefab (£1,401*), £291 was raised from donations for the fittings,
and £4,190 raised by the joint Parishes in two years. (*Relates to calculated
figure as I’ve not seen this specifically and the cost for the Terran Building
was about £1,100.)

There have been several Chairman who have served on the B&HVH
Committee over the years, the last was Roger Wyartt, who probably served
for the longest time. He kept the Hall and its Committee in good order for
more than 20 years, ending his term of office in January 2020. I took the
reins just before the start of the challenges of the Covid Pandemic in 2020.

Our goal is to ensure the Village Hall is a valuable asset for your
enjoyment.

Help needed!

As part of the Village Hall Refresh that we have
been progressing, we now have a new project.
We have 16 children’s chairs that need a tidy
up. A good rub down and then painted in a few
primary colours. Anyone want to volunteer? We
are happy to pay for materials and perhaps
something towards your time.

Please contactTony Ciorra on 07515

help out.

Blooming June!

Add a splash of colour to the garden says yVOnnE HARBUtt

Our gardens and homes

are now adorned with

hanging baskets and

planters bringing

colourful displays to

enjoy throughout the

summer months.

If you have an extra

planter or two to fill with

instant colour, consider

New Guinea impatiens.

The large bright ‘Bizzie

Lizzie’ flowers range

from white, through to pink, purple, orange and red. An ideal choice

for slightly later flowering.

Growing to around 20 inches high, they thrive in a spot where there

is morning sun and afternoon shade. Keep them well watered as moist

soil is preferred.

New Guineas can also be kept as an indoor houseplant. Dahlias

(pictured above) are another popular choice to add to your borders

and planters. They provide an abundance of colourful large flowers

on bushy plants from mid-summer until the autumn months.

Deadhead regularly for repeat flowering – ideal for cutting to enjoy

the blooms in the home. Dahlias can be overwintered with a helping

hand – keep pots protected from frosts and wet conditions. No need

to water during the winter months.

Those planted in the garden should also be protected or lifted and

stored in a dry environment until spring. There are still plenty of

seasonal plants available to add to your borders and planters,

prolonging the flowering time for you to enjoy in your garden.

So what does Jubilee actually mean?

fdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdffdfff day

The word “jubilee” is derived from the Hebrew word jobel, which
means “ram’s horn” – since it was a horn that was used as a trumpet,
sounded at the beginning of the jubilee year. The Hebrew was
translated into Latin as jubilare, meaning “to let out joyful shouts” from
which we get jubilee.

The book of Leviticus, defines the significance of the jubilee year,
a year of liberation which is at the end of seven weeks of years, the
50th year.

(Leviticus 25, 8-10). King James Version
And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven
times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall
be unto thee forty and nine years. Then shalt thou cause the trumpet
of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the
day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your
land. And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty
throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a
jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession,
and ye shall return every man unto his family.
These laws are found in Leviticus 25, Exodus 34, and
Deuteronomy 16.

Poet’s corner extra: Will pets go to Heaven?

There was a discussion in one of our house groups recently about whether
or not pets go to Heaven, writes Helen Elliot. This poem by Adrian Plass,
written after friends lost a beloved dog, is a wonderful response, and we
are delighted he has given us his blessing to reprint it.
‘BUDDy’
His head was as big as a shoebox, Eyes like a curious child,
Feet spread like mops, slobbering chops, Deaf to the call ofthe wild.
There happened to be a big meeting in heaven the day Buddy died,
From early to late the ancient debate should pets be permitted inside?
Most angels said, ‘No, they don’t have a soul, the concept is wrong and
absurd’.
A dozen or more were not quite so sure, but God sat, and spoke not a word.
At last, he arose and said ‘I propose next month we continue to talk,
But dusk is fast falling, the hillside is calling and Buddy is needing a walk!’
