‘ Dear Friends, This month our thoughts turn to warmer weather, holiday fun and all the summer events we can look forward to – picnics, barbecues, days out and long, lazy summer evenings. It is also a popular time for weddings, and we are looking forward to celebrating three weddings at St Mary’s Church, Rougham, this year. I love the wedding season! The bells ring out joyfully to announce that there is something wonderful to celebrate and all those who hear them become part of the joy and celebration. There is the special moment when rings are exchanged and vows are made. The rings, made from the most precious metals in the world, are the story of a couple’s love for each other, and a reminder of God’s unending love for us; and the confetti (biodegradable, of course!) settles on the church path like falling blossom and reminds us of celebration, ‘party’ and happy times. Marrying in church is personal, meaningful, spiritual and beautiful, just as you want it to be. A church is so much more than simply a venue for your wedding. Churches are special places and there are some things about a church wedding that you just can’t get anywhere else. And after your wedding, you’ll realise that a church is more than simply a wedding venue. We’ll always be here for you as our Reader, Marcus Bateman, writes: The selection of a wedding venue is a meticulous process, reflecting how we cherish the location, and memorise the event. Choosing to marry in one of the four historic churches, ranging from large to small, offers distinct advantages: • stunning locations and breathtaking settings; • a place of history spanning thousands of years; the churches will endure, becoming timeless witnesses for a couple's 50th anniversary; • a unique, sacred place where, for hundreds of years, ordinary individuals have solemnly declared their marriage vows before God, family and friends; and • ongoing support for each couple, from the Rector, Julia, and her team, emphasising a lasting, and personal connection. The churches offer flexibility in the marriage ceremony, whether 3 Bells, rings and confetti!

8 Bury drop-in boost: Thank you to those who helped organise and attend the Vintage and Pre-loved Clothes sale in Beyton Vestry which was set to raise funds for Bury Drop-in and Church Funds as this issue went to press, writes Diane Rendle. This wonderful charity supports people who are homeless and vulnerably housed in Bury St Edmunds. They include the street homeless, rough sleepers, sofa-surfers, those in temporary accommodation, and people who were homeless but need support to avoid falling back into homelessness. Some 40 guests attend each Tuesday and Friday for a hot meal. As well as food the charity supplies toiletries, socks, underwear, scarves and gloves for any guest in need. For the street homeless the charity buys small tents, sleeping bags, vouchers for showers at the sports centre, the launderette, Greggs cafe and for clothing at the Salvation Army shop. For more informatio about Bury Drop-in, why not visit www.burydropin.org On the mend: Thank you all for your messages, gifts and most of all your prayers, writes the Revd Graham Rendle, after my hip operation. Recuperation at West Suffolk Hospital was slow at first but I was well looked after with good hospital food. I was home four days after the operation and have been steadily improving. I have felt very supported by all the cards and gifts but especially your prayers. My long-suffering wife, Diane, and I have enjoyed having son Peter and daughter Caroline with us for a few days. Peter works from home so has been able to keep up with his job though Caroline had to return to work in Drogheda Hospital so flew home to Dublin. We will take an extended holiday in June when I am able to drive long distances again but will be back in time for the Rev Sarah Locks ordination at the end of the month. Thank you again.

Viewing the cars is completely FREE. If you have a supercar (or a classic car or motorcycle) which you would like to display please e-mail [email protected]. The fee to display a car is £10 per car/driver and £10 per passenger This is FREE for Beyton residents. Please provide your address to Ellie when booking. You may, in lieu of a charge, wish to make a donation to Ellie’s fundraising This event is being organised to support fund raising by Beyton resident and ‘A’ level student Ellie Walters, who in July, will be travelling to Tanzania to undertake some charitable work as part of her ‘World Challenge’ trip. Her charitable work is focused on local school and family support projects. It’s a great cause, and Ellie will be on hand to provide more information about her trip on the day. Why not combine visiting the Open Gardens and the Supercar event on the same day? 9

16 Poet’s Corner Ode, Composed On A May Morning by William Wordsworth While from the purpling east departs The star that led the dawn, Blithe Flora from her couch upstarts, For May is on the lawn. A quickening hope, a freshening glee, Foreran the expected Power, Whose first-drawn breath, from bush and tree, Shakes off that pearly shower. All Nature welcomes Her whose sway Tempers the year's extremes; Who scattereth lustres o'er noon-day, Like morning's dewy gleams; While mellow warble, sprightly trill, The tremulous heart excite; And hums the balmy air to still The balance of delight. Time was, blest Power! when youth and maids At peep of dawn would rise, And wander forth, in forest glades Thy birth to solemnize. Though mute the song – to grace the rite Untouched the hawthorn bough, Thy Spirit triumphs o'er the slight; Man changes, but not Thou! Thy feathered Lieges bill and wings In love's disport employ; Warmed by thy influence, creeping things Awake to silent joy: Queen art thou still for each gay plant Where the slim wild deer roves; And served in depths where fishes haunt Their own mysterious groves. Cloud-piercing peak, and trackless heath, Instinctive homage pay; Nor wants the dim-lit cave a wreath To honor thee, sweet May! Where cities fanned by thy brisk airs Behold a smokeless sky, Their puniest flower-pot-nursling dares To open a bright eye. And if, on this thy natal morn, The pole, from which thy name Hath not departed, stands forlorn Of song and dance and game; Still from the village-green a vow Aspires to thee addrest, Wherever peace is on the brow, Or love within the breast. Yes! where Love nestles thou canst teach The soul to love the more; Hearts also shall thy lessons reach That never loved before. Stript is the haughty one of pride, The bashful freed from fear, While rising, like the ocean-tide, In flow the joyous year. Hush, feeble lyre! weak words refuse The service to prolong! To yon exulting thrush the Muse Entrusts the imperfect song; His voice shall chant, in accents clear, Throughout the live-long day, Till the first silver star appear, The sovereignty of May. Christian Meditation Group. The next meditation meetings will be at 2 pm on Thursday 2022 in the cabin, Guildhall Cottage. The next meditation meeting will be on Thursday May 16th at 2pm in the cabin, Guildhall Cottage. The verse will also be sent out to those who have expressed an interest. 21 Why not ring the changes with fennel, celeriac, aubergines and artichokes, suggests yvonne Harbutt If you enjoy growing your own produce, you will, no doubt, be well on the way to filling your vegetable garden or allotment with plants for this season. Whilst it is tempting to grow the same again each year, why not explore growing different varieties this season? Every year at the nursery, we add new vegetable varieties to our selection of plants, offering growers the chance to produce unusual, tasty vegetable and salad items. Our farm shop customers also enjoy trying the produce later in the season and look forward to the different flavours to include in their meal planning. It is interesting how the taste can differ from the more traditional varieties. Choose from a range of tomato, courgette, squash, and cucumber plants or try something different including bulb fennel, celeriac, aubergines, artichokes plus different kale and cabbage. Chillies and peppers have become popular, this year we are growing a new range of interesting varieties to suit all tastes. If you like growing from seed – salads and leaves are easy crops to achieve. Spicy and oriental Be different this year!
types are available to enhance salads for the summer season. Consider growing herbs too- choose perennial varieties together with annuals including a range of basil, coriander and dill which grow well from seed. If space allows, select fruit bushes – home grown berries are far tastier than those bought in supermarkets which are also expensive for small punnets. Hardy bushes will give sweet, juicy fruits during the summer. Popular varieties include strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, and blackberries or to extend your choice try loganberry, gooseberry, tayberry, redcurrants and fig. We always suggest growing something new every year-this allows you to discover different flavours and extend your culinary experience. Bon appetite!
