Let your light shine Dear Friends, It is a beautiful autumn morning; bright, crisp and unseasonably warm as I write this. I have been out in the garden walking the dog and enjoying the beauty of creation. We have all settled well into the Rectory – humans and animals! – and we are very grateful for the warm welcome that you have given us. I love the turn of the seasons, and especially the run up to Christmas, with the Church’s emphasis on light in the darkness. Have you noticed that people are beginning to put up Christmas lights earlier and earlier each year? I think that says a lot about our need for comfort, reassurance and hope amidst the darkness. At my licensing service (which occured when I took up my new post in charge of the parishes), I chose this reading from Matthew’s gospel, because the theme of light is one that I associated with the churches in the Benefice when I first visited: You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. This is also the passage on which the Primary School has based its vision statement: ‘Together we shine brighter’ and wasn’t it wonderful to hear them singing about it with such enthusiasm at the service?! Our churches are all called to be shining lights in our communities 3

5 – beacons of hope, places of safety and people of welcome. It seems that many people are already doing this, but I wonder who else might have gifts and skills that can benefit the churches and communities? Who else might be waiting for the encouragement to shine? At our baptism we are called to ‘shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father’. We are given a lighted candle to remember the light of Christ in our lives, and to reflect it in the way we live out our faith. In doing so, we give others permission to shine. One of my favourite quotes, often attributed to Nelson Mandela, is this: ‘It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?… And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.’ So let us strive to shine a light of hope and kindness in practical ways, paying particular attention to our neighbours who are housebound, or who dread the long winter period of darkness. As we enter the season of shorter days and long, dark nights, let us turn to the light whenever we can, and remember Jesus’s words of comfort: ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ John 8, verse 12 Blessings, Julia Lall PS Don’t forget you can follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/groups/roughamchurches Act of Remembrance: Can you help? I am looking forward to leading a short Act of Remembrance at the Hessett War Memorial on Saturday 11 November at 10.50am. (This is in addition to the Remembrance Service and Holy Communion at Rougham on 12 November at 10.45am). I am wondering if there is anyone in our communities with military connections who would like to read: ‘They shall grow not old...’ on either or both occasions? If so, please get in touch at [email protected] or call 07543 824837. Thank you.

6 Wars, treason and plots Remember, remember the 5th of November – gunpowder, treason and plot – one of the most memorable terrorist plots in this Kingdom’s history, writes Graham Rendle. In 1605 being the wrong sort of Christian made a very big difference in your life. James I was Protestant and the Catholic plotters hoped to install his nine-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, as the Catholic Head of State. In fact, the old Book of Common Prayer (compiled later that century) had a special prayer for 5th November thanking God for the deliverance of the King and Parliament. In recent years the sectarian divide in Ireland has resulted in injury and death on both sides. For most of us in this country we are very tolerant of the beliefs of others and the church and our leaders are not involved in politics. It was said that we are a Christian country but now we are a minority – most people are indifferent to our faith. For us in our villages the church still stands as a symbol of Christian values and we must do all we can in our community to show our love for our neighbours through such examples as “Pantry in the Porch”, coffee mornings and this magazine. Another important day for the church and others takes place this year on 12th November – Remembrance Sunday – when we hear the names of the men from our villages who died in the two world wars. We always mark the Sunday nearest to 11 November as that signalled the Armistice agreement between Germany and the Allied Forces in Paris on Monday, 11 November 1918 and ended the First World War – apparently “the war to end all wars”. But, sadly that was not the case and the world is still broken by conflict. In fact, when UK forces pulled out of Afghanistan in February 2014 this country had been fighting continuously somewhere in the world since 1914 – Europe, Korea, Malaya, Egypt, Palestine, Cyprus, the Falklands – also in Iran and Iraq peacekeeping for the United Nations. The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Day continues to support injured men and women from our forces and their families. We pray for peace in this world and for all affected by conflict at this time.

9 driving forward for churches THANK YOU to all our riders and striders, classic/vintage car drivers and the wonderful volunteers who made this Big Day special! Everyone had fun and hopefully didn’t get too hot!! writes Diane Rendle. The Sponsored Ride & Stride is a national event, and every second Saturday in September cyclists and walkers all round the country are out making money for their local county Churches Trust. The idea started in Aldeburgh in Suffolk 40 years ago, and consistently Suffolk has headed the table of funds raised. Ride & Stride is the main source of income to Suffolk Historic Churches Trust to enable it to make grants to churches and chapels of all denominations towards repair and restoration costs. Ride and Stride is run entirely by volunteers and is inter-denominational, with participants sponsored for each place of worship visited between 9am and 5pm on Ride & Stride Day or with a donation, regardless of the number of churches visited. Money raised by each cyclist or walker is shared equally between the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust and the place of worship nominated by the participant. As important as the participants are the many volunteers who give up the day to staff the churches and chapels and sign in the cyclists and walkers as they arrive. Hundreds of places of worship are looked after during the day and that takes quite a team of volunteers! It is a real community effort that is the lifeblood of the Trust. In rsrsSuffolk there is also a Pedal & Drive event on the same day, a car rally for vintage and classic cars. Riders & Striders take a welcome donut break at all Saints Church, Beyton during their charity day. yes, that is a Rolls Royce!

10 december village walk The next Hessett village walk will be on Saturday 2 December though the location has to be confirmed, writes Sally Spicer. Hopefully we will be walking to Blackthorpe Barns and back again. Meet on Hessett Village Green at 10am. As the magazine goes to press, the October walk was set for five miles of field walking at 10am, Saturday 21st October from The Bull Inn, Woolpit. Farewell to Jack Maydom Friends and family paid tribute and said farewell at West Suffolk Crematorium to Jack Maydom who has died just shy of his 97th birthday, writes Graham Rendle. Jack with wife Brenda moved from Newmarket to Beyton in 1989. He was a Divisional Manager at Pye Electro Devices Ltd, based in Newmarket, though he managed the Swaffham factory, which produced electro-mechanical solenoids. Jack retired shortly after the move to Beyton and with his boundless energy immersed himself in village life. He was a Parish Councillor, part of Beyton Village Association and involved with securing the Village Sign (of which he was justly proud), active in the the Church where he became a Warden, a position he held for about 25 years. He was also a member of Probus, the group for retired business people, where he served as Chairman. Meanwhile Brenda was a ward clerk on the maternity unit at Newmarket Community Hospital. One task she particularly enjoyed was taking pictures of the new born babies to give to their parents. Sadly, Brenda died in 2013 leaving Jack on his own for more than a decade. He remained a Churchgoer and was fond of our coffee mornings where he was known to regale others with tales of his time as air cadet during the Second World War, helping to service Spitfires during the invasion of France. He also recalled collecting abandoned bicycles from the local villages where RAF crews had been billeted. In later years when confined to wheelchair, he took delight in completing the Daily Telegraph crossword, and occasionally received communion at home. At his funeral, son Chris offered a fitting tribute, remembering his many achievements including a scholarship to Beckenham College and building a 22ft cabin cruiser for family holidays. Jack’s ashes will join Brenda in All Saints churchyard.

Also we have submitted an application requesting that the Five Bells Pub is listed as an Asset of Community Value supported by the fantastic 145 responses to our letter asking for your views. 25 Grow your own garlic Perk up those autumn dishes says yvonne Harbutt Garlic has many uses in the kitchen with lots of dishes calling for a few cloves to add extra flavour. It can also be used to flavour butters and oils and the like. It is relatively easy to grow and is best planted during November or December as it likes to be exposed to a spell of colder weather. There are two types of cultivated garlic. Softneck is easier to grow, has plenty of cloves and stores well. Hardneck produces fewer, larger cloves and because they have a thinner skin have a shorter shelf life. It also produces flower stalks as part of its natural growth. Elephant garlic is also a popular choice; while not truly from the garlic family – it is closer in flavour to leeks and can be used as a vegetable in roast dishes. Choosing cultivated garlic is recommended as it is resistant to most forms of disease as opposed to bulbs bought from the supermarket, it also allows you to choose named varieties depending on your taste. Once you have selected the varieties you would like to grow, split the large bulb into individual cloves. These can be planted directly into the ground or started off in pots and planted once they have established a root system. Garlic grows best in a sunny site in light, well-drained soil. Plant each clove upright and pushed into the soil – double their own depth – at intervals of approximately 15cm apart. They need very little after care, just nip off any flower buds which may appear – it is important to keep the area weed-free. Add a little general-purpose fertilizer in the autumn and a couple of times in the spring. Make sure you water regularly especially if

However, as harvesting time approaches water less frequently to avoid rotting the bulbs. Harvest through the summer once the foliage has died back and fallen to the ground. When storing the bulbs, choose a cool, dry place where the airflow is good – a shed or somewhere similar would be ideal. Explore other preserving methods – drying for granules and powder or jar in oil or vinegars. Why not give it a go and enjoy fresh, tasty garlic throughout the year!
