A guest column by our Deacon, Rev’d Sarah Lock Dear Friends, It is good to be able to put together a few thoughts to you all as we approach the middle of yet another year. Time certainly does seem to fly by and as I reflect back over the past 12 months since I last wrote an article for the magazine, I realise just how much has happened in our world, our church and in my own life. I am sure that may well be the same for many of you too. Over the past 12 months, as I have had the privilege of working and serving amongst you as the Deacon here in the community, I have often heard it said “I am really frightened about the world in which we live” or “I worry about the world my children/grandchildren are inheriting”. These times are indeed concerning when we watch and listen to the news headlines from around the world. As I am typing this, I have just heard the headline flash up that a possible temporary ceasefire may have been agreed in the war between Israel and the Palestinians, but it is as yet still to be proven. Many of you, I know, have been facing your own battles with health or bereavement and it is so easy to wonder where God is in all of these situations. I can’t offer you any trite words that give answers to each of the questions I have been asked, but what I do know and have proved over the past 12 months, is that He (God) is there with us in each and every one of those situations – the good, the bad and the down right scary. On a personal note, I am rapidly approaching the day (29th June) when I will be ordained Priest in the Cathedral. This means that I will finally be able to preside at Holy Communion and conduct marriages as well as take baptisms and funeral services. My first Communion service will be on Sunday 30th June in Hessett Church and I would be delighted if those of you who are able, came along to join in what will be a real celebration. For those who can’t make it to Hessett, we will be repeating the celebration again on 5th July at Rougham but on that day, we will also be sharing a lunch together so do please join us at one or the other of those very special days. You will be very welcome, whether or not you usually come to church. When we look around us, as well as all the bad things that we see, there is much to be very grateful for. The beauty of this part of the world in which 3 A year of challenges and hope

5 we live, the longer warmer days that are approaching, food and homes for the vast majority of us, as well as families and friends. I am just so grateful for the knowledge that I have that my God is right beside me through the good times and the bad. To me, that faith is a very real and tangible thing – not just some airy fairy pie in the sky ready for when I die so if you would like to know more about it, or just to have a chat about what faith means to me on a practical basis, do feel free to get in touch. In the meantime, my prayer is that each one of you may be aware of the presence of God in and around you in whatever situation you may find yourselves. 8 by Graham Rendle In the mid-1950s a motor-cycle accident put me in hospital with a cracked spine. Nurses wore blue dresses, white caps and starched aprons – all women. Matron was in green with a huge white head-dress. Doctors and consultants all men, in three-piece suits and watch chains! There were metal bed pans and ceramic bottles and iron bed frames. The local hospital had two wards - men and women – no A&E. My GP assisted in surgery! There were few cars on the road, no motorways, and people went to work on bicycles – buses ran every 20 minutes! At a recent hip operation in the West Suffolk Hospital everyone was in shapeless pyjama scrubs – men and women, nurses and doctors. There were electric rise and fall beds, wash bowls, bottles etc all made of cardboard and disposable. How life as changed! Surgery is now at an unimaginable level. The NHS has come a long way since my first visit, vaccines eliminating childhood diseases, amazing surgery replacing organs and bones. Successful developments in all aspects of medicine and surgery has given us longer lives but with increasing needs as we wear out in old age. The NHS is a victim of its own success and the demands of the population an almost bottomless pit of rising expenditure! But we couldn’t exist without it! Hospital visit reflections...

16 Poets’ Corner Why was June made? by Annette Wynne Why was June made? – Can you guess? June was made for happiness! Even the trees Know this, and the breeze That loves to play Outside all day, And never is too bold or rough, Like March's wind, but just a tiny blow's enough; And all the fields know This is so – June was not made for wind and stress, June was made for happiness; Little happy daisy faces Show it in the meadow places, And they call out when I pass, “Stay and play here in the grass.” June was made for happy things, Boats and flowers, stars and wings, Not for wind and stress, June was made for happiness! Suggested by Gloria Wilson A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns O my Luve’s like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my Luve’s like the melodie That’s sweetly play’d in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I: And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry: Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun: I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. And fare thee well, my only Luve And fare thee well, a while! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho’ it were ten thousand mile. Suggested by Jonathan Wilson A.M. Thoughts by Dick Davis As soon as you wake they come blundering in Like puppies or importunate children; What was a landscape emerging from mist Becomes at once a disordered garden. And the mess they trail with them! Embarrassments, Anger, lust, fear – in fact the whole pig-pen; And who’ll clean it up? No hope for sleep now – Just heave yourself out, make the tea, and give in. Suggested by Helen Elliot If you have a favourite poem, let us know at [email protected] Christian Meditation Group. The next meditation meetings will be at 2 pm on Thursday 2022 in the cabin, Guildhall Cottage. The next meditation meeting will be on Thursday June 20th at 2pm in the cabin, Guildhall Cottage. 21 Peppers and chilli plants are proving most popular, says yvonne Harbutt. But if you can’t stand the heat... Growing chilli plants and sweet peppers is becoming very popular. They are easy to grow and there are lots of varieties to choose from, depending on your desired taste for heat. They are fun to use as houseplants during late summer, when they add unusual shapes in vibrant colours. The Capsicum family, which include chillies and peppers, needs a long growing time. Sowing should start anytime from January until mid spring – use moist compost and place in a humid environment or propagator to promote germination. When the seedlings are ready to handle, pot on using a good quality compost and keep inside until late May or until the days are warmer, when they can happily grow outside on a sunny balcony or patio during summer. Pinch out the centres and feed weekly once the flower buds emerge. The fruits are usually ready to harvest late summer onwards. Use fresh, freeze or dry to use over the coming months. If you would like to grow this year, you will now need to buy plants. Choose healthy specimens and follow the same feed and water process. The heat scale for chillies is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). The Pep up your garden!
22 higher the number the hotter they are. Leaving the fruits on the plant will encourage the heat, becoming hotter as they change colour from green to red.Sweet pepper varieties include different colours, shapes and sizesfrom small lunchbox, traditional and long shaped fruits ideal to roast filled with your favourite mixtures. If you would like to overwinter plants, bring them in at the end of the season, before temperatures drop and fruits have been harvested. Keep in a light, warm spot and water sparingly through winter. Why not give it a go and enjoy your tasty homegrown fruits, much nicer than shop bought imported varieties? If you would like to find out more about chillies and sweet peppers, join us this autumn as we celebrate these popular fruits with a special open day. We’ll keep you posted once the date is confirmed. Contact Yvonne Harbutt at Rougham Hall Nurseries on 01359 270577 or visit www.rhn.me.uk

Churches Together in Bury St. Edmunds and District is holding a Summer Celebration in the Abbey Gardens on Sunday 30 June, writes Heather Corbell. This is to celebrate our town and local villages, as well as our churches, as we are thankful for our peace, our creation, our amenities, our community, and for all that contributes to the common good, as well as the message of God’s love for all. Churches Together is grateful for the use of the Abbey Gardens for this event. There will be music on stage, to the left of the ‘Dovecot’, from 2pm–4.30.pm with a mix of local bands and singers, including some worship music, and children’s shows, and activities. The plan is to bring a picnic, a rug, folding chairs if you want (a gazebo to share, if you have one), sun-cream too, church banners, if you like. The cafe and toilets are nearby. Medical assistance will be available. Children under 16 must be accompanied.
31 Cathedral’s custom- designed chairs St Edmundsbury Cathedral has received new, custom-designed and built chairs, ushering in a new era for the building following the removal of the Victorian pews. The chairs, designed by Luke Hughes & Company, aim to produce ecclesiastical furniture that is compatible, dignified, supportive to the Liturgy, practical, long-lasting and, of course, subservient to the architecture. The design for the ‘Edmund Chair’ was in collaboration with the Cathedral and the chairs are designed, when linked together, to recreate the strong horizontal architectural lines that were characteristic of the Victorian pews. They will be stained to a mid-oak colour, also reminiscent of that earlier interior scheme. However, the new chairs will link, stack and can be cleared away on purpose-made dollies to enable the nave to be re-arranged or cleared altogether. The Very Reverend Joe Hawes, Dean of St Edmundsbury says, “We are thrilled to welcome the new chairs to the Cathedral, and this is thanks to our New Chairs Appeal which allowed members of the Cathedral community to purchase a new chair for the Nave. We are incredibly grateful for our congregation and the way they have embraced this change. Chairs were part of the original design concept of Stephen Dykes Bower when he began as Cathedral architect in 1943 so to fulfil his vision 80 years later is a great thing.”
