Where has the time gone? Dear Friends, This month it is six months since I began my ministry with you in our four beautiful churches and villages, and it is such a joy to be here! It has been a bit of a whirlwind, with Christmas and Easter both falling within that time period, and there have been many wonderful opportunities to join in with the events that are happening in our communities and at Rougham CE Primary School. I am enjoying watching how the Rectory garden is changing with the seasons, and how the new shoots of growth are beginning to flower – the snowdrops, primroses and daffodils are amazing! In the same way, new shoots are springing up in our churches and communities, with new events and activities being planned, and more people coming along to contribute and to serve. Having celebrated a joyful Easter (Bucks Fizz, party poppers and hot cross buns!) we are at the point of intentionally planning our vision and direction for the next five years. The responses that we are receiving from the Questionnaire will feed into that, and I’m really encouraged by the number of questionnaires that have been returned so far. We need to maintain a sustainable, visible Christian presence in our villages, and to include more people in living out our vision. We aim to do this by setting up a number of working groups to enable: • children’s and families’ work • pastoral care • buildings and churchyard maintenance • communication • finance • administration • fund-raising youR CHuRCHeS need you! do you have gifts and skills to offer? Could you be part of one of these groups? your help and support in any of these areas will be most gratefully received. 3

6 yard project receives £10k lottery funding The Yard project at St Edmundsbury Cathedral is celebrating after being awarded £10,000 in National Lottery funding to support its work with young people. The group, based at the Cathedral, will use the money to continue its community youth work. The Yard is an area of the Cathedral that was previously left overgrown. It has been redeveloped as part of a social action project for young people. The project’s aim is to create a dedicated place for young people in the Cathedral gardens and a space they can make their own. The Yard has been designed to offer a safe space where young people can come and spend time, learn new skills, meet new friends and improve their mental health, wellbeing and resilience. The calm and peaceful location of the Yard, combined with small group sizes and a relaxed atmosphere that takes things at each young person’s pace, has proved particularly positive for the young visitors. Jane Dow, Project Lead of The Yard, said: ‘We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work. Now we will be able to support more young people to increase their wellbeing after the challenges of lockdown. There is very strong evidence that outdoor projects like The Yard can be tremendously helpful in helping young people to restore mental health and build community.’

16 Poet’s Corner Messenger by Mary Oliver My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird – equal seekers of sweetness. Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums. Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn? Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me keep my mind on what matters, which is my work, which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished. The phoebe, the delphinium. The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture. which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here, which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart and these body-clothes, a mouth with which to give shouts of joy to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam, telling them all, over and over, how it is that we live forever. Suggested by Helen Elliot If you have a favourite poem, let us know at [email protected] Christian Meditation Group. The next meditation meetings will be at 2 pm on Thursday 2022 in the cabin, Guildhall Cottage. The next meditation meeting will be on Thursday April 18th at 2pm in the cabin, Guildhall Cottage. The verse will also be sent out to those who have expressed an interest. Contact: Helen on 01359 270365

21 They’re so versatile around the garden, says yvonne Harbutt Mention conifers and probably what come to mind are leylandii hedges or large specimen trees featured in open spaces. These all have their place in the garden – however there are also other, smaller varieties that can help you achieve a well-balanced garden. Dwarf specimens are very versatile and can be utilised in a number of ways. Conifers grow best in free draining soil and enjoy a sunny position. As long living, evergreen feature plants, they provide year-round interest with varying colours from green, to golden, variegated and blue tones, and many have attractive shapes and texture. Whether you are looking for a structural design or want to add ground cover to borders and rockeries – they are easy to grow and offer a low-maintenance solution. Consider them for pots and planters or as space fillers in tricky areas that need a lift. Conifers are fairly drought tolerant and are ideal for the environment in areas where wildlife can take shelter in the borders. Before making your choice, measure the space and decide on the overall height and spread you require to create the desired effect. Well worth a look for modern gardens where space may be limited. Happy gardening! Contact Yvonne Harbutt at Rougham Hall Nurseries on 01359 270577 or visit www.rhn.me.uk In praise of conifers

22 team, will raise awareness of the needs of homeless and vulnerably housed people in Bury St Edmunds. The service will create a more informal atmosphere inviting families, the local community including churches and members of their congregation, and introducing guests to worship, with the message of hope and love. Bury Drop In, a Christian charity, provides two sessions weekly, 11 am– 1.30 pm, held at Trinity Methodist Church. The impact of the cost-of-living crisis has forced demand on services and increased the number of people attending sessions. Robert Green, chair of trustees, said: ‘We are thankful for our relationship with St Mary’s Church who are hosting the service as we celebrate Bury Drop In as an expression of the compassion of God.’ The service is open to all but please RSVP to [email protected] evensong service at St Mary’s Church for Bury drop in On Sunday 28 April at 4.30pm a Spring choral evensong service will take place at St Mary’s Church, Bury St Edmunds.
