Reminding us of the key truths behind special dates Dear Rougham, Beyton, Hessett and Rushbrooke parishioners, May 2023 – a month for celebrations and for memories new and remembered. 1st May – a Bank Holiday often associated with celebrating fertility, especially of new life in the family and fields. It is also a day we remember the Apostles, Philip and James, who followed Jesus after his baptism by John. On the 31st May the church remembers the pregnant Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, who had a key role in preparing the way for Jesus. And now the big celebration this month is the Coronation of King Charles III (6th May) with lots of things happening in our villages and the churches. We also celebrate the moment Jesus left the disciples on top of the mountain and went up to heaven after He had risen from the dead and had been with them over the weeks that followed Easter Day. ascension Day and Whit Monday holidays are now replaced by the second May Bank Holiday – though it is a coincidence that the latter falls on the Bank Holiday. Our whole history and society is tied up in the story of Jesus – Christmas, Easter and everything associated with it including hot cross buns, Easter eggs, even All Hallows Eve (called by many Halloween) when we remember those of our relatives and friends who have died. For many these celebrations have become remote from the truth behind them. It is important to remember that Jesus was sent by his father to die in our place to open heaven to be our eternal home when we die. If you don’t believe this, now is the time to think about it and DO something about it. If you wish to speak to anyone about this then contact me or any of the church members mentioned in this magazine. Late in May (in fact, the 28th) we remember Pentecost when the disciples were empowered by the Holy Spirit who gave Jesus’s disciples the power to spread the gospel throughout the known world. That was 2000 years ago so it wasn’t ‘a flash in the pan’. It’s still going strong today! Every Blessing, Graham Rendle 3

5 Do you know about Collects? Collects – a prayer for every week and every occasion in the church year, writes Graham Rendle. One of these prayers is said at every church service. The Collect, sometimes called the Opening Prayer, is a time for collecting the prayers of the gathered assembly. This is an invitation for all of us, together with the priest, to call to mind our prayer intentions in a moment of silence. The word collect comes from the Latin phrase ecclesia collecta, which means that it is a public prayer prayed by and for the assembled church. They are generally based on the reading for the day or the specific event – they mainly come from the Monastic devotions. The Book of Common Prayer came into being in 1549 when Henry VIII took over the church and it became the Church of England liturgy with readings, prayers and services in English for the first time. The BCP is mainly based on the Great Bible which Henry VIII distributed to every parish in the country so that everyone who could read it in English, Not the Tyndale as everyone supposes. Collects are described as the Jewels of the English liturgy – one of the best known being – The evening collect. “Lighten our darkness we beseech thee O lord and by thy great mercy defend us from all the perils and dangers of this night: for the love of thy only son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.” This prayer has been used by faithful Christians for more 1,500 years. 6 St Mary’s Church, Rougham Sunday 21st May Come and join us as we celebrate Pentecost! Our normal breakfast will be available from 9.30am. Then the usual short, all-age service starts at 10am and will include a very small taster of what might be included in a traditional Agapé (pronounced a-ga-pay) meal which is a simple “friendship” meal. The small amount of food in the Agapé taster is simply a symbol of what may have been included hundreds of years ago. It will not replace our traditional breakfast! Please note that there will be no Holy Communion service after Family@Church but we really hope that everyone will feel able to attend the 10am service and participate in it with us. We look forward to resuming the separate Holy Communion service in June. Family@Church
7 I was privileged to be able to send a tractor, implements and some tools to The Kisampa Conservancy to support local villagers. Despatch So in 2021, on a bitterly cold Monday morning, a large lorry and trailer appeared and we brought out the tractor, a Massey-Ferguson 35 diesel, and all the other stuff that was also going for the ride. This was a skeleton three ton trailer, a grader blade, a finger mower, a spring tine cultivator, a two-furrow plough and a rear mounted crane, not Ferguson, I hasten to add. Also, with the generosity of Witham Oils, Sealey Tools, Vapormatic, Agriline and Claydon Tyres we had 3 x 1 tonne bags of paints, oils and greases, garage equipment and parts together with many hand tools. The picture below, taken by David Williams, shows us strictly observing social distancing as well as the rig which came to fetch all the equipment. It shows, from left to right, Jamie, the driver‘, Fred, nephew of Rob Barbour, CEO of the charity, Jim, the ‘mechanical skills’, and me. Sending a tractor to Tanzania: ‘Despatch and arrival’ Former church warden JoHN Selley on the challenges of sending an old machine abroad ... all during Covid restrictions
8 Arrival Rob Babour, CEO of The Kisampa Conservancy, takes up the story: “Nearly four months after leaving the UK, I am delighted to report that the tractor and all the useful bits and pieces arrived safely. Fortunately our delivery, just missed the MV Ever Given getting stuck in the Suez Canal though it arrived in Dar es Salaam just as the strongest cyclone for 60 years hit the area! “The lorry and container left the port and crossed the city and started the 100km journey. “Sadly the lorry was stuck for two days, 40kms from the final destination at Kisampa Conservancy. “We had to mobilise our guys from the conservancy to get the truck out of the mud but it was clear the truck (with the 40ft container) was not going to make it all the way without getting stuck again. “So we made the decision to unload – still 40 km away – stack all the equipment on the trailer, prep the little tractor with fuel and oil and drive the balance of the distance to the conservancy. “The tractor fired up straight away and they made it into Kisampa sometime close to midnight, under the light of a flashlight strapped to the front of the tractor!”
9 The picture (below left) shows the problem and one man thinking about the task! Somewhere there is a video clip of the tractor being unloaded, though I’m a little pleased that I’m not sure where it is located as Health & Safety would, no doubt, have a blue fit if it had been in the UK as the container is on the lorry’s trailer and the tractor is in the container, but that didn’t stop them just reversing the tractor out onto two lorry wheels! It certainly came out with a heck of a jolt! And I trust it hasn’t caused any long-term issues. Why it didn’t turn over I shall never understand but the driver had a huge grin on his face when it was safely out and it was “high fives” all round!! The tractor has been christened “Punda”, which is the Swahili word for donkey. That’s all for now but they keep sending news so I’ll provide another update soon. Tractor Grandpa. 16 Poet’s Corner Home Thoughts from Abroad by Robert Browning Oh, to be in England Now that April’s there, And whoever wakes in England Sees, some morning, unaware, That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf, While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough In England – now! And after April, when May follows, And the whitethroat builds, and all the swallows! Hark, where my blossomed pear-tree in the hedge Leans to the field and scatters on the clover Blossoms and dewdrops – at the bent spray’s edge – That’s the wise thrush; he sings each song twice over, Lest you should think he never could recapture The first fine careless rapture! And though the fields look rough with hoary dew, All will be gay when noontide wakes anew The buttercups, the little children’s dower – Far brighter than this gaudy melon-flower! Thanks to Helen Elliot. If you have a favourite poem please let us know at [email protected]
17 god’s grandeur by Gerard Manley Hopkins The world is charged with the grandeur of God. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil; It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod? Generations have trod, have trod, have trod; And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil; And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod. And for all this, nature is never spent; There lives the dearest freshness deep down things; And though the last lights off the black West went Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs – Because the Holy Ghost over the bent World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings. - – – – – – – – – –

21 Time for those hanging baskets and tubs And why not give your displays a patriotic flavour, suggests yVoNNe HaRBuTT Now May has arrived, it should be safe to start planting hanging baskets, tubs and planters with colourful annuals and summer flowering plants. It is not unusual to have late frosts in May, so keep an eye on night temperatures and protect plants if necessary. There are numerous varieties to choose from, something for every situation. Fuchsias are ideal for shady areas, they bring a bright display of cascading pink, purple and red pendant blooms which flower throughout the summer. If you struggle to water regularly, you could choose geraniums – they thrive in drier conditions and are always very popular. The most

Adult and children’s books are available in St Mary’s Church, Rougham For those who would like to stay a while to read and enjoy the calm surroundings, there is a comfortable reading area. Donations of books in good condition across all genres are welcome. popular choice for our customers is a mixture of colourful million bell petunias, verbena and lobelia, together with trailing foliage plants. You may prefer a more coordinated colour mix or a bold group of single variety plants such as begonia or petunia. Be creative with a contrast of colours- black and orange work well or a patriotic red, white and blue combination. When planting, choose a good quality peat free multicompost. Add water retaining granules – there are a number of products available – these will help to keep your compost hydrated and prevent your planters from drying out during hot summer days. For best results and an abundance of flowers, it is essential to regularly feed, water and deadhead your baskets and planters.
