Reflecting on what our patron saints mean to us Dear Rougham, Beyton, Hessett and Rushbrooke parishioners, I have been thinking about patron saints this month. Do you remember the Eagle comic in bright colour print with Dan Dare on the front page? It was full of interesting stories and facts. The back page was the illustrated life of notable Christians including St Paul and St Patrick – the patron saint of Ireland celebrated on the 17th March. We also celebrate St David, patron saint of Wales, on the 1st. Both these saints had strong connections with their countries. St David, born and bred in Wales, ended as Bishop and spread Christianity in Wales and Brittany where some towns still bear his name – Saint-Divy, Saint-ivy and Landivy. St Patrick is remembered for bringing Christ to Ireland, banishing the snakes and explaining the trinity of God in the symbol of the trilobed shamrock leaf. St Andrew was the first disciple of Jesus after following John the Baptist. In Mark’s gospel (ch 13:3) Andrew is one of the disciples who asks Jesus about the ‘end times’ when judgement will come to the world. Jesus says (Mark 13:32) ‘No one knows, not even the angels nor the son, only the Father.’ Quite how he became patron saint of Scotland is not clear. According to legend, Óengus King of the Picts in AD832 won a battle with Andrew’s help and saw an X in the sky. Andrew was killed on an X cross – hence the Saltire as the Scottish flag. St George was probably a Roman soldier executed during Diocletion’s persecution of the Christians in AD303. His story was brought back to England by the Crusaders and Edward III made him the Patron of the Most Noble Order of the Garter and his red cross was adopted as England’s flag. Interestingly, some years ago there was a local movement to have our St Edmunds adopted as the real English Patron Saint. 3

For more information, please contact Vicky Pryke on 01359 231465. You are most welcome to join us! How we celebrate in March All of March is covered by the time of Lent (an old English word for Spring season). As I noted above, we celebrate two patron saints – St David of Wales on the 1st and St Patrick of Ireland on the 17th. In Lent we remember Jesus’s temptations in the wilderness as He prepared himself for his earthly ministry. In former times this was when people prepared for baptism which took place at Easter. These days it is a time for reflection and preparation for the events of the Passion of Christ – the Last Supper and his arrest, crucifixion and his triumphant coming back to life on Easter Day. Sunday is not a part of the Lent restrictions – Sunday is always a time of rejoicing when we celebrate His rising from the dead, especially in Holy Communion in the Bread and Wine. The middle Sunday of Lent, March 19th, is Mothering Sunday. It was a tradition to return to the Church in which you had been baptised or to go to the Mother Church – the Cathedral. In the 19th century this was the day when servants in big houses were given the day off to visit their mothers and the family. They would make a simnel cake – a fruit cake with marzipan in the middle. This transferred to Easter with 11 balls of marzipan on the top representing the 11 faithful disciples. March also sees the start of Ramadan when Muslims fast during daylight as they reflect and pray. Jesus and his mother Mary are celebrated as saints by Muslims. As we reflect on our lives during Lent, we should also rejoice that Jesus came to bring us back to God and that we are to follow His love for us by showing our love to those around us and those affected by wars and earthquakes. Every Blessing, Graham Rendle

13 Would you like to be trained to save a life in Hessett? Many of you will know that we have a defibrillator fitted to the outside wall of our village hall, writes Sarah Lock. We thought it would be good to have some training on how to use this and also how to give effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to someone in desperate need while someone is racing off to fetch the defibrillator. Once we have established the level of interest, we can go back to the person who has volunteered to do this and agree dates. The only thing we know at this stage is that the training will be held in the evenings. No previous medical experience is required. 14 Poet’s corner Never Mind, March by Annette Wynne Never mind, March, we know When you blow You’re not really mad Or angry or bad; You’re only blowing the winter away To get the world ready for April and May. ********** To Daffodils by Robert Herrick Fair Daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon; As yet the early-rising sun Has not attain'd his noon. Stay, stay, Until the hasting day Has run But to the even-song; And, having pray'd together, we Will go with you along. We have short time to stay, as you, We have as short a spring; As quick a growth to meet decay, As you, or anything. We die As your hours do, and dry Away, Like to the summer's rain; Or as the pearls of morning's dew, Ne'er to be found again. Thanks to Helen Elliot. 21 Hooray! Spring has arrived! It’a time for a splash of colour, says yVonne HaRButt It’s lovely to see the arrival of spring in the garden, especially all the colourful bulbs emerging to announce the beginning of a new season. They inspire us to start planning our gardening calendar for another year to enjoy the great outdoors. Bulbs are not just planted for a display of colour early in the season, there are lots of varieties which can be considered to plant now, giving a spectacular display during the summer months. Choose graceful spikes of Gladioli and trumpet lilies to add height to your borders – available in stunning bright colours, they can be planted in groups of three or five to fill the gap during mid to late summer, when some perennials are starting to fade. Dahlia tubers are also an excellent choice for late summer colour, lasting well into the autumn months. Canna lilies and crocosmia (pictured) amongst many others can

Donations of books in good condition across all genres are welcome. work well in the border or in planters around the patio. Summer bulbs will struggle to survive frosts – in the first instance, it’s advisable to pot them up allowing them to develop in a protected environment. Once we are free of frosts and there are signs of growth they can then be safely planted, around the middle of May. If you prefer to plant directly into the ground, it is best to wait until we are free of frosts and protect them if late, cold spells of weather occur. All the varieties mentioned are grown as perennials. Dahlias and gladioli can be lifted and stored at the end of the season or sufficient ground cover protection will help them through the winter season. Avoid planting in areas which may become waterlogged or exposed sites where severe cold may be a problem. Planting summer bulbs is a great way to start gardening in spring. Once potted up they can be left to establish and planted when ready. Easy, low maintenance and very cost effective!
