Does every relationship have an expiration date? Adam and PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
Marklin are about to find out. Their five-year relationship has gone
from a passionate flame to a medium burn, forcing them to reconcile THE
with each other’s shortcomings all while watching their support
network crumble around them. Best friend Cammy’s latest beau Esmeralda Soria, Fresno City Councilmember District 1
checks all of her boxes — if you don’t count that he’s homeless; Miguel Arias, Fresno City Councilmember District 3
Haley’s 17-year-old student is more interested in studying her than
for the SATs; and Elizabeth and Damon — the “stable” ones — are
on the brink of divorce after 15 years of so-called bliss. But, in this
mess, hope springs eternal as they all muddle their way through to
try to make life work.

HOMOSAYWHAT THURSDAY, SEPT. 19
TOWER THEATRE
Director: Craig Bettendorf | 2019 | USA | 76 min. 7:00PM // $10

It starts with a taunt, a barb, a joke...HOMOSAYWHAT? PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
“Making fun of” morphs into angst, then fear, then hate, leading
to the intimidation, oppression, and even murder of those who
are deemed inferior. HOMOSAYWHAT contrasts the social,
political, and religious intolerance shown toward LGBT people
in past decades with the present day’s legal and growing social
acceptance. The film juxtaposes life after much of the fight for gay
rights has been won with the hard truth of what it took to get to
where the community is today. As the film unfolds the link between
the challenges of the past and those of the present may seem
surprisingly familiar.

JOSÉ THURSDAY, SEPT. 19
TOWER THEATRE
Director: Li Cheng | 2019 | Guatemala, USA | 94 min. 9:00PM // $10
In Spanish with English subtitles.
PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
José lives with his mother in Guatemala City, where they survive
on her selling sandwiches at bus stops and with him working at
a local restaurant. It is a poor and sometimes dangerous country
where, dominated by conservative Catholic and Evangelical
Christian religion, living one’s life as an openly gay man is hard
for José to imagine. His mother has never had a husband, and as
her youngest and favorite child, though at the edge of manhood
at 19-years old, she is determined to hold on to him. Reserved
and private, José fills his free moments playing with his phone and
random sex with other men arranged on street corners and dating
apps. When he meets attractive and gentle Luis, a migrant from the
rural Caribbean coast, they pursue an unexpected relationship with
more emotion than José has ever felt. He is thrust into new passion
and pain, and self-reflection, that push him to rethink his life even
as he is reluctant to take a leap of faith.

When handsome and charismatic Pablo arrives at his affluent

exemplary pillar of Guatemala City’s Evangelical Christian
community, Pablo’s announcement that he intends to leave his wife
for another man sends shock waves through the family. As Pablo
tries to acclimate to his new life in the city’s gay subculture with the
liberated Francisco, his ultra-religious family does everything in its
power to get their prodigal son back on track, no matter the cost.

would comply with the norm? How do you shape your identity with
that difference? 27-year-old M lives in France, where intersexuality 15

This integral part of her is taboo. To break the silence, M answers

The film looks at the ways intersex people work to reclaim their
bodies and shape their identities. It asks hard questions about the
things Western societies are willing to do in the name of social
norms, and what it means to be a man, a woman, or a little of both.

GAY USA FRIDAY, SEPT. 2O
VISTA THEATER
Director: Arthur Bressan | 1977 | USA | 72 min. 8:30PM // $10

Director Arthur J. Bressan, Jr. (best known for his 1985 gay drama PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
BUDDIES) mobilized camera crews across the country to document
the national Gay Freedom Day marches in June of 1977. GAY USA
conveys the passion, anger, and defiant optimism of a community
under attack (in that month of June 1977 alone: California’s anti-gay
Briggs Initiative had just been announced, Anita Bryant’s vicious
homophobia had helped repeal Miami’s gay rights ordinance, and a
gay man named Robert Hillsborough had only days earlier been the
victim of a fatal gay-bashing in San Francisco). Bressan weaves in
audio of some of those homophobic voices and gives an overview
of historical homophobia, including an account of gays and the
Holocaust — and then illustrates the triumphant power of love and
pride. In addition to the magnificent cross-section of footage from the
marches in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San
Diego, and Philadelphia, GAY USA also gives us a fantastic look at
rare footage shot by Lilli Vincenz of the very first gay pride parade in
New York City in 1970 (which was then known as Christopher Street
Liberation Day) as well as showing Bressan’s own previously shot
footage from San Francisco’s first major gay pride celebration in
1972.

Beautifully restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive
in collaboration with Frameline and Outfest, GAY USA is the first
American feature-length documentary by and about LGBTQ+ people.

CENTERPIECE FILM

TUCKED FRIDAY, SEPT. 20
TOWER THEATRE
Director: Jamie Patterson | 2018 | UK | 80 min. 8:30PM // $10

An aging drag queen gets a diagnosis of terminal cancer and PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
makes a new friend in this touching, unexpectedly funny end-of-life
drama set in Brighton, England.

Derren Nesbitt (THE NAKED RUNNER, WHERE EAGLES
DARE) plays Jack Collins, an everyday old man who initially looks
like a retired brickie. But, under a towering beehive wig, Jack
becomes Jackie, the main attraction at a drag club, performing
mildly offensive un-PC comedy routines that go down a storm with
the millennial audience. Jack’s cancer diagnosis comes after he
collapses on stage. But the show must go on and, a few nights
later, he rescues a young singer, Faith, from homophobic attackers.
Together, they form an unlikely friendship, both struggling with their
own issues of gender identity and mortality. As they discover more
about each other, they realize how to truly be themselves. TUCKED
is a ‘slice of life’ drama about love, loss and friendship; a feel good
film with great charm and sense of humour.

FRIDAY NIGHT AFTER PARTY

After TUCKED, the party will continue at Reel Pride’s Friday Night After Party
at The Painted Table. $3 buy-in gets you Happy Hour priced cocktails all night
long. The party is open to all TUCKED ticket holders, sponsors and festival pass
holders and above until midnight.

materials from Monty and his brother, Brooks Clift, this fresh portrait
of the actor’s passions, contributions and commitment to living and
working in his own way gives one of Hollywood’s underappreciated

WE ARE THE RADICAL SATURDAY, SEPT. 21
MONARCHS TOWER THEATRE
4:30PM // $10
Director: Linda Goldstein Knowlton | 2019 | USA | 95 min.
PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
A group of tween girls chant into megaphones while marching
in the San Francisco TransMarch. Holding clenched fists high,
they wear brown berets and vests showcasing colorful badges
like “Black Lives Matter” and “Radical Beauty.” Meet the Radical
Monarchs, a group of young girls of color at the front lines of social
justice.

Set in Oakland, a city with a deep history of social justice
movements, WE ARE THE RADICAL MONARCHS documents the
Radical Monarchs — an alternative to the Scout movement for girls
of color aged 8-13. Its members earn badges for completing units
on social justice including being an LGBTQ ally, the environment,
and disability justice. The group was started by two fierce queer
women of color, Anayvette Martinez and Marilyn Hollinquest as a
way to address and center her daughter’s experience as a young
brown girl. Their work is anchored in the belief that adolescent
girls of color need dedicated spaces and that the foundation for
this innovative work must also be rooted in fierce inter-dependent
sisterhood, self-love, and hope.

STRAIGHT UP SATURDAY, SEPT. 21
VISTA THEATER
Director: James Sweeney | 2019 | USA | 95 min. 5:00PM // $10

Todd and Rory are intellectual soulmates. Thing is, Todd might
be gay. What could go wrong? His favorite film is Legally Blonde,
he shares strong opinions about decorative pillows, and has yet
to meet his soulmate. Rory is an aspiring actress, hates cats, and
enjoys a biting wit and a great vocabulary. An intellectual match
made in heaven? Or will Todd’s sexual identity crisis get in the way.
Can a (probably) gay man and a straight woman add up to be a

escapes to the small town she used to visit on “Star Adventures”

CHANGING THE GAME SUNDAY, SEPT. 22
VISTA THEATER
Director: Michael Barnett | 2019 | USA | 95 min. 1:00PM // $10

CHANGING THE GAME takes us into the lives of three high PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
school athletes from across the US — all at different stages of their
athletic seasons, each sharing their lives as transgender teens.

Mack Beggs made headlines last year when he became
the Texas State Champion in girls wrestling, as a boy. Andraya
Yearwood began competing on her high school girls track team
in April 2017 as a transgender female. Sarah Rose Huckman
lives in New Hampshire where she openly competes on the girls
cross country ski team — but her eligibility could be challenged at
anytime.

As trans athletes, each of them show they have to work harder
than their cisgender peers in order to thrive in their field while
having the courage and resilience to face daily harassment and
discrimination — mostly by adults. Each story is led by the brave
and individual voices of these students, allowing extremely personal
and vulnerable access into their journeys. These courageous kids
offer us the opportunity to see the world through their eyes — and
share their struggles and successes along the way.

GAY CHORUS SUNDAY, SEPT. 22
DEEP SOUTH TOWER THEATRE
5:00PM // $10
Director: David Charles Rodrigues | 2019 | USA | 100 min.
PROUDLY SPONSORED BY
In response to a wave of discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws in
Southern states and the divisive 2016 election, the San Francisco Bradley Rutledge - Atella Properties
Gay Men’s Chorus embarks on a tour of the American Deep South.

Led by Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig and joined by
The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the tour brings a message
of music, love, and acceptance to communities and individuals
confronting intolerance.

More than 300 singers traveled from Mississippi to Tennessee
through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma to performed in
churches, community centers, and concert halls in hopes of uniting
us in a time of difference. The journey also challenges Tim and
other Chorus members who fled the South to confront their own
fears, pain, and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation.
The conversations and connections that emerge offer a glimpse
of a less divided America, where the things that divide us — faith,
politics, sexual identity — are set aside by the soaring power of
music, humanity, and a little drag.
