TRANSMILITARY PROUDLY SPONSORED BY:

Director: Fiona Dawson & Gabriel Silverman | 2018 | USA | 93 min. THE

TRANSMILITARY follows the Emmy nominated short film Transgender, at War
and in Love. Around 15,500 transgender people serve in the U.S. military (notably
the largest transgender employer in the U.S.), where they must conceal their gender
identity because military policies ban their service.

TRANSMILITARY chronicles the lives of four individuals (Senior Airman Logan
Ireland, Corporal Laila Villanueva, Captain Jennifer Peace & First Lieutenant El Cook)
defending their country’s freedom while fighting for their own.

They put their careers and their families’ livelihoods on the line by coming out as
transgender to top brass officials in the Pentagon in hopes of attaining the equal right
to serve. The ban was lifted in 2016, but with President Trump now trying to reinstate
it, their futures hang in the balance again.

OPENING NIGHT GALA 7

After TransMilitary, join us for our Opening Night Gala at The Painted Table.
Enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvre and cocktails while celebrating 29 years of

overcome the struggles of the past and present in THE LIFE OF LEI: THE MAN
BEHIND THE MAKEUP.

Director: Claudia Priscilla & Kiko Goifman | 2018 | Brazil | 74 min.
In Portuguese with English subtitles

BIXA TRAVESTY features Brazilian transsexual singer named Linn da Quebrada.
Through her music, we are introduced to her tough life. Coming from a very poor
region of São Paulo, she faces many prejudices no just for being transsexual, but for
being black. Linn uses her funk music like a “gun” against machismo. With a strong
and daring presence on stage, she constantly seeks to discuss and fight paradigms
and stereotypes. As she sings, “My black skin is my cloak of courage” and “she
doesn’t want penis, she wants peace,” Linn uses her voice to stand as a warrior for
her people in Brazil, where violent deaths of LGBT people have hit all-time highs.

LEITIS IN WAITING

Director: Dean Hamer, Joe Wilson & Kumu Hina Wong-Kalu | 2018 | Tonga & USA | 72 min.
In English and Tongan with English subtitles

LEITIS IN WAITING is the story of Joey Mataele and the Tonga Leitis, an intrepid group of native transgender
women fighting a rising tide of religious fundamentalism and intolerance in their South Pacific Kingdom.

The film follows Joey, a devout Catholic of noble descent, as she organizes an exuberant beauty pageant
presided over by a princess, provides shelter and training for a young contestant rejected by her family, and spars
with American-financed evangelicals threatening to resurrect colonial-era laws that criminalize the Leitis’ lives.
With unexpected humor and extraordinary access to the Kingdom’s royals and religious leaders, Joeyʻs emotional
journey reveals what it means to be different in a society ruled by tradition, and what it takes to be accepted
without forsaking culture and tradition.

50 YEARS OF FABULOUS PROUDLY SPONSORED BY:

Director: Jethro Patalinghug | 2018 | USA | 82 min. Imperial Dove Court
de Fresno
A film by Jethro Patalinghug and David Lassman, 50 YEARS OF FABULOUS
recounts the rich history of the Imperial Council, the oldest LGBT charity organization 19
in the world. Founded in San Francisco by renowned activist, drag queen and
performer José Sarria, the Council has helped shaped LGBT life and social history in
San Francisco and beyond throughout the last five decades. Sarria was also the first
openly gay man to run for political office in the United States in 1961. From its genesis
as a critical public space for the community and capacity building of LGBT San
Franciscans, to its vital role in the advocacy for LGBT human rights, 50 YEARS OF
FABULOUS documents the full scope of the organization’s historical evolution up to
its contemporary struggle in finding relevance — both in the wake of social progress
it has helped foster, and in light of a newly empowered political coalition committed
to rolling back a half-century of civil rights achievements.

DYKES, CAMERA, ACTION!

Director: Caroline Berler | 2018 | USA | 58 min.

Lesbians didn’t always get to see themselves on screen. But between Stonewall, the feminist movement, and
the experimental cinema of the 1970s, they built visibility, and transformed the social imagination about queerness.
Filmmakers Barbara Hammer, Su Friedrich, Rose Troche, Cheryl Dunye, Yoruba Richen, Desiree Akhavan, Vicky
Du, film critic B. Ruby Rich, Jenni Olson, and others share moving and often hilarious stories from their lives and
discuss how they’ve expressed queer identity through film.

DYKES, CAMERA, ACTION! covers the history of queer cinema from the early days as a marginalized sub-
culture, to the 1990s which saw the rise of New Queer Cinema, up to the present. The film examines the ways that
women directors have contributed to this genre and emphasizes the role that the media plays in representation of
sexuality and gender, underscoring the power that film has to shape our perceptions of one another. Visually, this
documentary comes to life onscreen through compelling and intimate original interviews intercut with emotionally-
charged archival footage, photographs, ephemera, inspired music, and film clips.

In their mid-30s, Eva (Oona Chaplin) and Kat’s (Natalia Tena) humble, yet carefree, lifestyle in their London
canal boat gets turned upside down when Eva presents Kat with an ultimatum: she wants a child. Kat resists,
knowing that it will end the bohemian lifestyle she’s always envisaged with Eva. When Kat’s best friend, Roger
(David Verdaguer), drops in from Barcelona to party with the ladies, however, the three of them toy around with the
idea of creating a baby together. Forced into a corner, Kat sees no other way out but to say yes. Surprisingly, their
offbeat DIY fertilization process is actually successful. As Eva enjoys her pregnancy and Roger fantasizes about
his role in his new family, Kat feels like the third wheel and begins distancing herself. When Eva has an unexpected
miscarriage, the group’s true feelings are laid bare, leading Eva and Kat to break up while Roger prepares to go

KILL THE MONSTERS

Director: Ryan Lonergan | 2018 | USA | 80 min.
Sexually explicit content. No one under 18 admitted

KILL THE MONSTERS, the new film by Ryan Lonergan, is a comedic political allegory set in modern day
America, based on the history of the United States.

The film follows three men living in a polyamorous relationship in New York City when the youngest of them,
Frankie, suddenly becomes ‘unwell’. It is thought that his job working as the assistant to a demanding British
bank executive may be partly to blame, and so he quits his position after much encouragement from Patrick and
Sutton. The three then set out on a journey across the country to meet with a holistic doctor in Santa Monica they
believe will make him well.

The film’s plot points mirror the history of the United States as they journey West while touring historical
landmarks that also compliment the moments in history that the allegory reflects. Along the way, the men encounter
female characters, each one symbolic of a foreign governments,
corporations and another representing Donald Trump! These
three men and the women they meetare the only faces the
audience will encounter in the film. As the story progresses,
the audience begins to realize two things: (1) the film they are
watching, while never betraying reality, is in some way based in a
slightly heightened world, and (2) they are watching the history of
the United States unfold within the course of one feature length
film.

Director: Madeleine Olnek | 2018 | USA | 84 min.

Molly Shannon (Saturday Night Live) plays Emily Dickinson in the humorous
drama WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY. The poet’s persona, popularized since her death,
became that of a reclusive spinster – a delicate wallflower, too sensitive for this world.

notably Emily’s lifelong romantic relationship with another woman (Susan Ziegler).
After Emily died, a rivalry emerged when her brother’s mistress (Amy Seimetz) along
with editor T.W. Higginson (Brett Gelman) published a book of Emily’s poems. Unique
and surreal, this seriously Independent film was the Winner of the US-In-Progress

LIFE IN THE DOGHOUSE PROUDLY SPONSORED BY:

Director: Ron Davis | 2018 | USA | 80 min.

As a child, Danny Robertshaw’s mom would take him to rescue shelters and
explain, “You don’t buy a pet, you save one.”

So in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina’s surge broke through the levees in New
Orleans and thousands of dogs were left stranded, Danny and his partner of almost
30 years, Ron Danta stepped up to save the lives of the abandoned dogs. The
veteran horse trainers and animal lovers drove their horse trailer down and back from
South Carolina to New Orleans bringing home 40-60 dogs per trip. Dedicating all of
their own resources to the effort, including their own home, they eventually rescued
and found homes for more than 600 dogs and Danny & Ron’s Rescue was founded.

LIFE IN THE DOGHOUSE, directed by award-winning filmmaker Ron Davis, tells
the inspiring life stories of these two men and the selfless work they continue to do.
With a no-kennel policy, there can be as many as 75 dogs living with them in their
home at any given time; the dogs also join them on the horse show circuit on their
journey of finding their “forever home”.
