Fresno Reel Pride LGBTQ Film Festival - 2017

28th Annual Fresno Reel Pride LGBTQ Film Festival
#FilmsForEveryone

It’s tempting to think that what we’re doing at Bitwise Industries
is about buildings or technology or companies. Those are in-
credible byproducts of what we’re trying to achieve, but that’s
not our game. Bitwise is about humans. We’re about their stories,
and empowering the next generation of ambitious people to

do awesome stuff in Fresno.

take the next step. Sarah, finding herself at odds with Kristen’s expectations,
is forced to confront her apprehensions towards the institution.

As Sarah’s film highlights the realities of married life, we glimpse what
“could be” for Sarah and Kristen three years into their marriage. Kristen
unexpectedly loses her high-profile job and the couple is confronted by the
very same obstacles foreshadowed in the documentary.

Looking for a change, Kristen abruptly pivots her career to pursue
her true passion, a move that puts the women at risk of growing apart.
As family history threatens to repeat itself, Sarah goes to great lengths to

other back-stabbing queens with their own problems who just can’t stand each
other, and you’re in for one chaotic night! The barbs fly in this real-time comedy

BROTHERLY LOVE

Director: Anthony J. Caruso | 2017 | USA | 118 min.
The film adaptation of the hit novel “Seventy Times Seven” by Salvatore Sapienza, BROTHERLY LOVE is the

critically acclaimed story of Brother Vito Fortunato as he navigates the emotionally stifling world of celibacy. About
to take his final vows into the Catholic Brotherhood, Vito struggles with letting go of the sexual life he enjoys. A
sabbatical to Austin, which was meant to clear his head, leads to even more confusion as he meets Gabe, a
handsome, recently-divorced landscaper. Under the guise of being “just friends”, Vito and Gabe develop a bond that
forces Vito to choose between his vows and his newfound love.

Unlike other gay religious themed films, BROTHERLY LOVE is light-hearted and non-preachy, as the battle here
is not with God or religion, but rather with celibacy. Is the bond of love strong enough to break a personal promise
to God? Or is Vito hiding behind his vow to avoid the vulnerability of true intimacy? To make his decision, Vito leans
on his faith, his friends and, of course, The Golden Girls.

WOMAN ON FIRE

Director: Julie Sokolow | 2016 | USA | 85 min.

In February 2015, the Village Voice heralded the arrival of “New York’s Bravest” – Brooke Guinan, the first openly
transgender firefighter in New York City. As a third-generation firefighter, Brooke has a passion for heroism that
runs in her blood. Her father George is a respected lieutenant and 9/11 survivor with a 35-year legacy in the FDNY.
People always asked Brooke if she would follow in her father’s footsteps. But when Brooke transitions from male to
female in her father’s workplace, it poses not only a challenge to a macho profession, but also to the customs of the
people she cares about the most – her traditional family.

Meanwhile, Brooke’s boyfriend of two years, Jim,
struggles with to come out to his family. A wise-
cracking Air Force veteran, Jim still hasn’t told his
mother that Brooke is a transwoman. Brooke and
Jim realize that having the life they want means being
vulnerable in the face of judgment. As we watch the
couple buy a house together and consider marriage,
we reconsider what it means to be man and woman,
gay and straight, traditional and nontraditional. A
heartfelt portrait of change in the American family and
workplace, Woman on Fire is a testament to love,
courage, and loyalty.

A MILLION HAPPY NOWS

Director: Albert Alarr | 2016 | USA | 80 min.
Veteran actress Lainey Allen (Crystal Chappell, One Life to Live) is tired of being sidelined for younger talent on

the soap she has starred in for twenty years. Coupled with finding it harder to retain her lines, she decides not to
renew her contract, and she and her publicist and partner, Eva Morales (Jessica Leccia, One Life to Live), move to
a beach house overlooking the ocean on California’s Central Coast. The move highlights some small changes in
Lainey’s personality – mild depression that Eva puts down to leaving the show. But when Lainey starts to forget more
than can be attributed to stress, Eva insists on a visit to the doctor. A MILLION HAPPY NOWS chronicles Lainey
and Eva’s changing relationship as they struggle to deal with the diagnosis of Lainey’s Early Onset Alzheimer’s, the
prospect of an indomitable woman’s future of dependence and her single support system – the woman who was
once in awe of her, became everything to her, and will now look after her.

maid of honor. When Charlene refuses Mary a “plus one” on the grounds that she probably couldn’t find a date, Mary
becomes determined to prove her wrong. But her attempts at dating are a disaster and she winds up feeling more
alone - until she meets Charlene’s wedding videographer, Jess.

Jess, like Mary, is equally adrift around happy couples. In the midst of all the wedding madness, Mary and Jess
connect and what starts out as a friendship soon becomes more intimate.

A DATE FOR MAD MARY is a tough and tender story about friendship, first love, and letting go of the glory days.

CHAVELA 35

Director: Catherine Gund & Daresha Kyi | 2017 | Mexico, Spain, USA | 93 min.

CHAVELA is the captivating look at the unconventional life of beloved
performer Chavela Vargas, whose passionate renditions of Mexican popular
music and triumphant return to the stage late in life brought her international
fame.

Born in Costa Rica in 1919, Chavela Vargas ran away to Mexico City as a
teenager to sing in the streets. By the 1950s, she became a household name in
her adopted country, delivering her performances with a raw passion and unique
voice. Just as influential were her cultural contributions; Chavela was a bold,
rebellious, sexual pioneer who was known for having many female lovers at a
time when being out in Mexico was dangerous.

CHAVELA centers around a 1991 interview—the singer’s first public
appearance after 15 hard years lost to alcoholism and heartbreak. In the final
years of her life, Chavela openly comes out as a lesbian and rises into her
momentous third act, becoming a muse to filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, earning
a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and selling out performances at prestigious
concert halls around the world.

next four decades, tens of thousands of government workers would lose their jobs for no reason other than their
sexual orientation. The actions of the government had an unintended effect. They inadvertently helped ignite the
gay rights movement.

In 1957, after thousands had lost their jobs, a Harvard-trained astronomer named Frank Kameny became the
first person to fight his dismissal. His attempts to regain his job evolved into a lifelong fight for the rights of LGBT
people.

THE DEATH AND LIFE OF Proudly Sponsored By:
MARSHA P. JOHNSON

Director: David France | 2017 | USA | 105 min.

Who killed Marsha P. Johnson? When the beloved, self-described “street
queen” of New York’s Christopher Street was found floating in the Hudson River
in 1992, the NYPD called her death a suicide. Protests erupted but the police
remained impassive and refused to investigate. Now, 25 years on, Academy
Award® nominated director and journalist David France (How to Survive a
Plague) examines Marsha’s death - and her extraordinary life - in his new film.

Marsha arrived in the Village in the 1960s where she teamed up with Sylvia
Rivera when both claimed their identities as “drag queens,” to use the vernacular
of the times. Together, the radical duo fought arrests, condemned police brutality,
organized street kids, battled the intolerant majority within the gay community,
and helped spearhead the Stonewall Riots. In 1970 they formed the world’s
first trans-rights organization, STAR (Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries).
Despite their many challenges over the years—bias, homelessness, illness -
Marsha and Sylvia ignited a powerful and lasting civil rights movement for gender
nonconforming people. Now, a quarter century later, at a time of unprecedented
visibility and escalating violence in the transgender community, a dynamic activist
named Victoria Cruz has taken it upon herself to reexamine what happened at
the end of Marsha’s life.

THE FABULOUS ALLAN CARR

Director: Jeffrey Schwarz | 2017 | USA | 90 min.
Armed with a limitless Rolodex and a Benedict Canyon enclave with its own disco, Allan Carr threw the Hollywood

parties that defined the 1970s. As he gained entrance into the land of beach bodies and beautiful people, Allan
viewed himself as decidedly un-beautiful. His weight, his health, and his sexuality all contributed to a feeling that
he didn’t belong in Hollywood. So, Allan filled this void the only way he knew how – by throwing the most lavish,
extravagant, and theatrical of parties.

A producer, manager, and marketing genius, Allan built his bombastic reputation amid a series of successes
including the hit musical film GREASE and the Broadway sensation LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, until it all came crashing
down after he produced the notorious debacle of the 1989 Academy Awards.

GIRL UNBOUND: THE WAR TO BE HER

Director: Erin Heidenreich | 2016 | Pakistan, Canada, USA | 80 min.

At a young age, Maria discovered her love for one of Pakistan’s most popular sports, squash. Through this
game, Maria quickly began to rise in success as one of the nations most revered young players. And unlike those
that came before her, Maria’s path began in a place and time where women were restricted to play sports of any
kind. But with the blessings of her family, she did what no one else dared to do by dressing and ultimately passing,
as a boy.

When she was discovered, Maria’s true identity could no longer contend with the success she was finding in
her squash career and the Taliban took notice. She like those who stood with her quickly became their targets.
The carefree attitudes of a child at play evolved into a young woman with more than just a pastime; she became a
young woman with a presence and a purpose. Years later, Maria is still using her talents to help advocate women’s
rights to education and to play sports. Aware of the consequences this may bring from the Taliban, she believes it
is her right as a human being, and as a Muslim woman, to be free.
