From the Boardroom

Firstly I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all the players, officials and supporters from Hallen
to The Ridings this afternoon for this Premier Division match.
We knew that this season would be difficult and that building a new team that can compete at
this level would take time however again we have not been helped by loss of several players and
injuries to players who would normally been playing. We hope that this afternoon’s game will
provide us with a platform to move forward.
Following last season’s FA fiasco with regard to Lateral Movement the Leagues Committee have
been issuing regular newsletters, the latest of which clearly indicates a change of rule to address
the mistakes made by the FA last season as well as suggesting further boundary changes which
may well affect more clubs. The relevant information is set out below:
“The prospect of lateral movement is an annual one for all Clubs participating at Steps 2 to 7 of
the National League System. However, on completion of the 2019-20 season this prospect will
increase for Clubs operating at Steps 4, 5 and 6 owing to the NLS restructure.
The Regulation that covers lateral movement was amended over the summer and so we take the
opportunity to highlight this to Clubs:
‘‘It may be necessary from time to time to move Clubs laterally at the same Step. Each year the
Committee will consider whether any lateral movements may be necessary at each Step and the
final decision shall rest with a sub-committee of the Committee. A Club may appeal the decision
of the Committee to an Appeal Board and such appeal shall be conducted in accordance with the
Appeal Regulations.
In coming to its decision the Committee will have regard to any representations made by any
party, the distance to be travelled by any Club to be moved compared to the distance travelled in
the Playing Season prior to movement; the financial impact on the Club to be moved, the
frequency with which the Club has been moved in the past; the number of Clubs both in the
division to which the Club is to be moved and in the division from which the Club is moved, and
any other matter that it considers to be relevant.’’
It’s time therefore for the clubs Management Committee to start preparing the case why we
should not be laterally moved. Watch this space!!!

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to
the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of
Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen)
the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps
Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial
1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the
Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout
the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued
in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the
ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday
Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The
1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade
off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in
1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol
and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season,
the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six
seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw
Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following
season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where
we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.

The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination
Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and
Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier
cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of
the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.

The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02
season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff
Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season,
saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and
the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a
disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the
previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the
Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning
promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season,
when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol &
District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league
and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady
march up the County league.

The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken
the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the
following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by
two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the
beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league
to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the
new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following
season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League
Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was
our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new
gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more
difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th
place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the
2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present
manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club
had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history.
The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League
we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was
kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his
Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team.

HISTORY OF HALLEN FC

The club was formed by members of a new community living at
Lawrence Weston on the outskirts of Bristol, which had been developed
shortly after World War Two. The club was named Lawrence Weston
Athletic and played in the Bristol & District League, and it has moved
forward steadily since moving to the village of Hallen in 1979, to
conform with League Ground grading.
Much of the credit for the progress of this club can be accredited to the
late Frank Fairman and his family. His son Francis, and grandson Lee
continue the link with the club. In fact Lee played a major part in our
fight for survival during the summer of 2015, when the club was in
danger of losing its home. So it was no surprise when long serving
Chairman Barrie Phillips nominated Lee to take over the chair from
himself, at the next AGM.
The club became known as Lawrence Weston Hallen when it moved to
Moorhouse Lane, joining the Gloucestershire County League in 1982,
and under that title were runners up 1987-88, and Champions 1988-89,
after which the club dropped Lawrence Weston from its title to become
known as simply Hallen.
The club completed the double in 1992-93, when winning the
Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy and the League title. Promotion was
achieved, joining the Hellenic League Division One, and after further
improvements to the facilities (particularly the erection of floodlights
and a 200-seater stand), a runner-up position in 1996–97 led to another
step up, to the Hellenic League Premier Division.
The club had always considered the Western League as its goal, as this
League was more familiar with Bristolians than the Hellenic League.
Their wish to transfer over was granted at the second time of asking but
it was insisted that the club join the First Division for season 2000-01.
The club finished fourth in its first season in the Western League and
reached the last sixteen of the F.A.Vase losing to Brigg Town 6-5 in
extra time.
Further progress was made when new manager Gary Damone led the
team to the Division One title in Season 2003-4, and fourth place in the
Premier Division at the first attempt. The club also reached the final of
the GFA Trophy and were denied a place in the first round of the F.A.
Cup when losing to Nationwide Conference side Canvey Island in the
fourth and final qualifying round.
This success saw Southern League side Taunton Town tempt Gary
Damone to try his hand at a higher level, which in turn saw Hallen have
a dip in form, as players were also tempted away. It is however well
known that a high percentage of players are happy to return to Hallen,
and for season 2009-10 the club welcomed back Gary Damone as
manager and many former players too.
The club finished in a disappointing twelth position in 2009-10, but a
crop of long term injuries did not help. The club however were to lift the
Western League (Les Phillips) Cup for the first time.
The club had experienced a bad start to the 2010-11 season, which saw
the departure of manager Gary Damone who chose to take charge of his
town club Wellington. Club stalwart Paul Owen was given the task of

steering the team to safety. With just one win prior to taking over in
November, he and his assistant John Tierney changed fortunes around
and we were safe from relegation with six games left.
Paul Owen's first full season as manager saw the club challenging for
the title, but a dip in form saw the club slip to fourth. Off the field, the
club had ensured promotion would not be denied, had the club won the
title by obtaining the ground grading for Southern League football.
Season 2012-13 saw no repeat of a challenge for promotion, but the
season was kept alive by reaching the final of the Les Phillips League
Cup for a second time. In the final Willand Rovers won 1-0 before a
crowd of 400 at Cribbs Friends Life FC. As Paul Owen had already
decided to step down at the end of the campaign, it was unfortunate
that he could not see his side lift the cup.
By mid May the club announced that Hengrove Athletic manager Jamie
Hillman was to take over as manager, He had been at the helm for eight
years at Hengrove, and had just guided them to the Premier Division as
runners up in April. The 2013-14 season under Jamie and his assistant
Grantley Dicks, was a mixture of highs and lows. The highs being
success in lifting the GFA Trophy for a third time and reaching the fifth
round of the FA Vase losing away to West Auckland Town. In contrast
we finished the League campaign without a win in fifteen games.
Manager Jamie Hillman announced that he would be leaving, and
previous manager Paul Owen agreed to return for the 2014-15 season.
By November the League form was yet again cause for concern and Paul
decided it would be best to bring in a new face, rather than wait to the
end of the season. Steve Winter a former Walsall and Torquay player
was appointed with a view, of him settling in, prior to the coming
season.
He was to resign in December 2015, and long serving player Tom Collett
took on the role as player manager assisted by Rayan Wilson for the
2016-17 season.
Following another poor run of results,Tom Collett made way for former
player Ben Willshire to return as the new manager. Ben guided the club
away from relegation, but when fortunes did not change in the next
campaign, it was decided his assistant Rob Sage should take over the
helm prior to Christmas 2017, with Ben remaining as a player. The
resignation of Rob Sage forced the club to seek another manager in
February.
Former manager Gary Damone returned as interim manager, whilst the
club decided on a replacement from a record number of applicants. The
successful candidate being former player Ray Johnstone, who had
guided Odd Down to the title in 2016.
Ray recruited another former Hallen player Tony Davis as his assistant
for the 2018-19 season, and it was a season which saw a more settled
side. The club finished in twelth place the best for several years.
For the 2019/20 season. Ray has appointed Dean Horseman as his
assistant.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN RESERVES
BRISTOL PREMIER COMBINATION

CHIPPING SODBURY RESERVES HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent
two seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League
in 1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions
of Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but
come runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up
and getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol
& District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing
between the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in
the Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season
was another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combi-
nation Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combi-
nation. The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and
winning 5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Sea-
son saw the team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the high-
est league standing in the Reserves History.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 4 TOTTERDOWN UNITED 3

Totterdown played their part in a great game of football. We Played some great football
at the start, keeping the ball well but just like in previous games, our opponents scored
first. Before we knew it we are 2-0 down. We got back into the game with a Dan Brown
left foot shot from just outside the area. Deservedly so we then equalised from Dan’s
towering header from a corner. Just before half time a lack of concentration cost us a third
goal and we went in 3-2 down at half time.
A few words of encouragement at half time seemed to do the trick. Midway through the
second half Totterdown had a player sent off. We took advantage and scored again, Dan
Browns hat trick completed. The winning goal ten minutes from time was from the penalty
spot converted by Luke Henderson. The ten men of Totterdown played brilliantly for the
last part of the game, with only our keeper Jak Murray (normally the third teams centre
half) pulling off a magnificent save to secure all three points. I cannot praise the players
enough for the way they played. Hopefully we can now kick on.
Les Theobald Manager.

A Superb hat-trick by Dan Brown orchestrated the Re-
serves 1st win of the season against Totterdown on Satur-
day 4—3.

MID-WEEK FLOODLIT DIVISION

The Under 18s came up against strong opposition in their most recent
fixtures narrowly losing both games after hard-fought encounters in which
they can count themselves unlucky.

An away fixture against Mangotsfield played on 3G at Yate Academy in the
FA Shield proved to be a difficult encounter but having trailed 3-0 the Sods
dominated the second half and pulled two goals back, only to lose out to a
last minute strike. Keane Ashwood netted twice, once from the penalty spot
and again with a fierce 25 yard free kick.

Longlevens visited Sodbury in a Monday night Gloucestershire Floodlit
League match. A toe to toe battle in a high quality first half resulted in a
goalless half time scoreline but within a minute of the restart Longlevens
broke the deadlock and took a 1-0 lead. Sodbury had narrowly missed a
golden opportunity to open the scoring before their visitors struck, but
within 2 minutes the scores were level when Callum Ball drove home from
close range following some exciting build up play. Longlevens restored their
lead adding a second and a third in the opening quarter and despite creating
numerous chances the Sods lost the game 3-1.

Mark Lloyd Assistant Manager.
