From the Boardroom

Firstly I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all the players, officials and supporters from
Tavistock to The Ridings this evening for this Premier Division Game.

We knew that this season would be difficult and that building a new team that can compete
at this level would take time however again we have not been helped by loss of several
players and injuries to players who would normally been playing. We hope that today’s
game will provide us with a platform to move forward.

Following last season’s FA fiasco with regard to Lateral Movement the Leagues Committee
have been issuing regular newsletters, the latest of which clearly indicates a change of rule
to address the mistakes made by the FA last season as well as suggesting further boundary
changes which may well affect more clubs. The relevant information is set out below:

“The prospect of lateral movement is an annual one for all Clubs participating at Steps 2 to 7 of the
National League System. However, on completion of the 2019-20 season this prospect will increase for
Clubs operating at Steps 4, 5 and 6 owing to the NLS restructure.
The Regulation that covers lateral movement was amended over the summer and so we take the
opportunity to highlight this to Clubs:
‘‘It may be necessary from time to time to move Clubs laterally at the same Step. Each year the
Committee will consider whether any lateral movements may be necessary at each Step and the final
decision shall rest with a sub-committee of the Committee. A Club may appeal the decision of the
Committee to an Appeal Board and such appeal shall be conducted in accordance with the Appeal
Regulations.
In coming to its decision the Committee will have regard to any representations made by any party,
the distance to be travelled by any Club to be moved compared to the distance travelled in the Playing
Season prior to movement; the financial impact on the Club to be moved, the frequency with which
the Club has been moved in the past; the number of Clubs both in the
division to which the Club is to be moved and in the division from which the Club is moved, and any
other matter that it considers to be relevant.’’

It’s time therefore for the clubs Management Committee to start preparing the case why we
should not be laterally moved. Watch this space!!!

Upcoming fixtures are:

Sat 23rd Nov – Bridport (A)
Tue 26th Nov – Cadbury Heath (H)
Sat 30th Nov – Hallen (H)

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to
the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of
Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen)
the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps
Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial
1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the
Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout
the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued
in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the
ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday
Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The
1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade
off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in
1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol
and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season,
the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six
seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw
Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following
season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where
we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.

The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination
Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and
Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier
cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of
the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.

The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02
season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff
Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season,
saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and
the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a
disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the
previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the
Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning
promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season,
when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol &
District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league
and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady
march up the County league.

The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken
the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the
following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by
two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the
beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league
to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the
new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following
season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League
Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was
our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new
gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more
difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th
place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the
2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present
manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club
had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history.
The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League
we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was
kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his
Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team.

UP THE SODS.

THIS WEEK 10 YEARS AGO

Les James Cup Quarter Final

14th November 2009

Taverners 3 Chipping Sodbury Town 3

Taverners progress to the Semi-finals after winning 3-2 on penalties. The final score had
finished 3-3 after 90 minutes. There is no extra time in this competition.
Both teams had to contend with a very strong wind blowing straight down the pitch at
Nailsworth and it was the home side that were up against it in the first 45 minutes.
Chipping Sodbury kept the pressure on the Taverners defence right from the kick-off and
only some brave defending kept them at bay. The deadlock was broken in the 30th minute
when Sodbury’s Alex Fox sprung the offside trap to round keeper Duanne Portlock for a 1-
0 lead. Sodbury continued to press and goal-line clearances from Craig Roberts and Mike
Thornton kept the score-line down to one at the break. Taverners made sure that they
would take full advantage of the wind in the second half and thought they had levelled
the score on 55 minutes as Tom Burridge headed home from a corner only to have the
goal ruled out for a foul on the visitor’s keeper. Five minutes later he was at it again
heading in from a corner and this time the goal stood Taverners were level. The home side
then went ahead after a low drive at goal was handled in the box and Mike Thornton
netted the resulting penalty. In the 67th minute Taverners found themselves 3-1 up as a
ball into the box was flicked on by Ian Preece and all the defender could do was try to
prevent the ball entering the net. In the 80th minute Sodbury made a double substitution
Chris Power and Shaun Halford coming on and within 3 minutes Power had pulled a goal
back to make it 3-2. This lifted the visitors, who then levelled the score in the 86th minute
as Shaun Halfords cross was neatly headed home at the near post by Paul Harris. This lead
the game into penalties to decided who would go through.
Mike Thornton netted the first for the home side, but Lloyd Harding’s attempt for Sodbury
was well saved by the home keeper. Tom Burridge then proceeded to miss the second
Taverners penalty and Danny Coombes levelled with Sodbury’s second. Craig Mills made it
2-1 to Taverners and Ollie Clark levelled for Sodbury. The home side then went 3-2 up as
Matt Spring netted, then disaster for Sodbury as Mike England missed. The 5th penalty for
Taverners was taken by Paul Jennings and he missed so that meant Paul Harris had to
score to level for Sodbury, but he missed and that sent the home side through.

PLYMOUTH PARKWAY 5 CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN 2

Despite heavy rain overnight which continued well into the morning, the game went
ahead albeit in tricky, blustery and heavy conditions with frequent showers during the
game. In recognition of remembrance weekend, the Exhortation and Last Post were
broadcast over the p.a. followed by an impeccably observed minute’s silence.
A hardy crowd of 157 had braved the elements. Parkway made a confident start and
created an early chance with Rosenquest seeing his effort blocked. With both teams
taking time to adapt to the conditions, the Sods forced the game’s first corner on 10
minutes with a deflected shot from the edge of the 18 yard box being well saved by Kyle
Moore.
Parkway gradually imposed themselves on the game with midfielder Shane Krac seeing
plenty of the ball and dictating play in midfield without creating too many clear cut
chances. Chipping Sodbury were content to defend deep and pack the midfield denying
Parkway space in the final third. On 17 minutes Mikey Williams made a strong run from
the right ending with his shot being blocked. Parkway took the lead on 18 minutes. Good
build up play along the right saw the ball laid back to Jack Calver who rifled home a superb
strike from around 25 yards which deceived Keiren Provis in the visitor’s goal.
Parkway continued to dominate possession but their final ball often lacked quality as the
visitors continued to defend well and look to play on the counter. On 23 minutes Laurie
Howorth broke clear on the left with Moore doing well to save his shot as Parkway
struggled to get too much forward momentum despite having the lion’s share of
possession. On 26 minutes a sharp turn and shot from Adam Carter saw Provis make a fine
save with his feet as the hosts continued to press.
A period of pressure from The Sods saw a good build up down the right with Moore
parrying a shot away on 34 minutes. From the resultant corner, the ball came back to
Ewan McMillan who fired over from around 18 yards. Parkway then doubled their lead on
36 minutes. After a patient build up involving some neat and tidy link play, the ball was
laid back to Krac who let fly from around 30 yards leaving Provis flat footed.
As the pressure increased Parkway were awarded a penalty on 38 minutes. A smart
interchange along the left between Krac and Rosenquest saw the latter brought down by
Provis however the normally reliable Carter saw his weak spot kick well saved by Provis
who had guessed the direction correctly. Parkway suffered a blow on 40 minutes with
Aaron Bentley, in attempting to meet a low cross at the far post, unfortunately sliding into
the post and having to be stretchered off with Palfrey coming on in an uncustomary right
back position.

The Sods caught Parkway napping early in the second half pulling a goal back on 47
minutes with a corner from the left being headed home by the unchallenged Nathan
Brown. With conditions deteriorating, the game went through a scrappy phase with
neither side able to get any fluency into their play and both defences dealing comfortably
with the occasional threat. Parkway restored their 2 goal lead on 53 minutes, Calver who
once again showed his shooting ability from range by firing home a low shot from around
25 yards. The Sods belied their lowly position by continuing to compete well and play
some neat, attractive football but lacking the necessary penetration.
On the hour Jonathan Invernizzi and Danon Dagbo, making his debut, replaced Lewis
Bezer and Jack Moore for Sodbury and Parkway sending on Craig Duff for Carter.

Plymouth Match Report continued..
Chipping Sodbury continued to plug away and reduced the lead again on 72 minutes.
Brown broke away on the right and, with Parkway appealing for offside, he cut inside and
beat Moore with an angled low drive for his second of the game. Sodbury started pushing
for an equaliser and caused a few anxious moments in the Parkway defence before the
hosts restored their two goal relieving some growing tension around the ground. A long
ball found Duff clear on the right who displayed good balance and determination by
getting to the bye line and squaring the ball to the supporting Krac who, arriving late, fired
high into the roof of the net from 5 yards. Sodbury with nothing to lose, made their final
substitution on 82 minutes with Mahad Ahmed replacing Ewan McMillan and went 3 at
the back.
Parkway finally sealed the game on 86 minutes when another probing long ball found
Williams racing clear along the right and showing good skill he drove into the penalty area
and curled a shot around Provis from around 10 yards.
Along journey for the boys, who never gave up and did us proud. UTS.

I just wanted to say what a pleasure it was running the A Team today with Ricky away.
Although we lost 4-3 to a team one league above in the GFA Cup the effort that was put in
today was amazing after going 1-0 down at HT then going 2-1 up then 2-2 then 3-2 to us
then 3-3 before the legs just couldn't give anymore and Cribbs scored 5 minutes from the
end. Great game of football to be involved in.
Massive well done to you all the attitude and team spirit you have is brilliant to see. We
may only be the A team but you are a credit to this club keep it up boy's. And i loved it.

TAVISTOCK CLUB HISTORY

Adhoc football, a cross between rugby union and soccer and perhaps a few other games to boot, took
place between Plymouth and Tavistock sides from the mid 1870s, but it took a letter in the Tavistock
Gazette from scribes under the pseudonym of “Wei/wisher” and “Halfback”, to attract the attentions of
two local businessmen.

The club was thus founded on September 8th, 1888, the foundation year of the Devon County FA, when
sportsman and businessman Herbert Spencer summoned “interested persons to assemble at the
Guildhall where a committee was elected under the chairmanship of his brother, Wilfred, with Herbert
as his deputy and another brother, Kingsley, on the committee with Tom Owen Esq as secretary. The old
Tavistock Grammar School playing field in Russell Street hosted the newly formed club and the first
match against the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry resulted in a 1–0 victory. The first AGM held at the old
Temperance Hotel, now the Ordulph Arms, proudly recorded a first season playing record of Won 13,
Lost 3 Drawn 1.
By 1890 the club adopted a strip of blue and old gold and formed a second team, moving two years later
to Green Lane, Torlands courtesy of the proprietor of the Bedford Hotel. Going from strength to strength
the team won the league and were cup runners up in 1900-1901. On one day in 1903 at Torlands on the
edge of Dartmoor, a game had to be abandoned due to a sudden blizzard. In the same year wild ducks
invaded a flooded penalty area and set up home for a week in a makeshift pond, resulting in a
postponed fixture. No wonder that over the next few years venues changed, from a return to the old
grammar school pitch, to Green Hill and Sandy Park. It is believed that in 1913 the entire Tavistock team
was selected to represent the County.
During the period of 1914-1918 structured football was abandoned.
Eventually there were at least three other clubs in the town, Tavistock Comrades, Bannawell Blues
United and Tavistock West End. Amalgamation in 1939 produced the familiar colours of red and black. A
welcome change to the salmon pink shirts with chocolate collars and cuffs of 1919. The years 1920 to
1930 were successful times with excellent results in the league, Bedford Cup and Senior Devon Cup.
Sadly the next decade saw a decline in both results and attendance. Play ceased at the end of the 1931-
32 season due to debt. Jumble sales and whist drives were held to ease the financial situation and
football resumed once more in 1937.
The onset of World War II put things on hold until 1945 when the Lambs joined the Plymouth
Combination League First Division. In 1947 the Club President Herbert Thomas Langsford purchased
Langsford Park, giving it under trust to the club in 1949. A carved commemorative stone serves as a
reminder of his benevolence.

In 1952 Tavistock joined the South Western League but were forced to withdraw in 1961 due to financial
embarrassment until re-joining in 1968.
The Club has been the birthplace of many players going on to enjoy professional pay-days in the Football
League including Harold Redmond and Danny Sullivan to Crystal Palace for a fee of £100, Neil and Peter
Langman to Plymouth Argyle, Mike Trebilcock, perhaps the most newsworthy footballer to have played
for Tavistock scored two of the three goals in the 1966 Cup Final in Everton’s 3–2 win over Sheffield
Wednesday. Robbie Pethick, Tavistock born and ex-player of the Club, signed professional forms for
Portsmouth in October 1993, where he had five successful seasons before moving to Bristol Rovers.
The Club won the Devon Premier Cup in season 2001-02 and repeated this success in season 2006-07, by
beating Upton Athletic by six goals to nil, creating a record winning margin in the final of this
competition.
In season 2005-06, the Club reached the last thirty-two in the FA Vase, going out to Pickering Town in a
very close encounter. The Club also entered the FA Cup for the first time since 1953-54.
Perhaps the saddest entry in this brief history of football in Tavistock is the fire of 3rd February 2011,
which all but saw the complete destruction of the old changing rooms and the Red & Black Clubhouse,
since then a rebuilding programme has seen the club rise from the ashes and achieve great things by

becoming the SWPL East Divisions Champions in 2014/15 and then SWPL Premier Division Champions in
2016/17.
Tavistock AFC also made SWPL history the following year by becoming the first club to win both the
SWPL Charity Vase and Bowl.
Success has continued and after being runners up to Plymouth Parkway in the SWPL Premier Division for
the 2017-18 season the Lambs won the league on the last day of the 2018/19 season, beating Plymouth
Argyle to gain promotion to the Toolstation Western League.

We can say that football is very much alive in Tavistock!

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN’S HISTORIAN
DIGS DEEP

Believe it or not, not even older members of this club were around for the
1900/01 football season. This was the season Bristol City gained promotion
to the Football league, after finishing runners up in the Southern league. A
notable season for City who finished above Tottenham, West Ham and
Bristol Rovers.

In the FA Cup that season City were automatically entered into the
Intermediate Round and Rovers had 3 qualifying matches before they
reached that stage. After a Bye and wins against Weymouth and Swindon
Town, Rovers also reached the Intermediate Round.
So on the 5th January 1901 Rovers travelled to Luton Town and ended
victorious by 2 goals to one. City went to Reading and got a 1 – 1 draw and
replayed the tie back in Bristol 4 days later. This also ended in a drawn game
0 – 0 and so a second replay was required back in Reading on the 14th, where
Reading took the spoils 2 goals to 1.
On the 9th February 1901 was 1st Round proper of the F.A. Cup. In those days,
this stage of the competition was the last 32, So Rovers were playing to get
to the last 16. In their way was Reading, the team who had previously
dispatched of City. This was the last game for Rovers in the cup this season,
as they lost at Reading 2 – 0.
Reading reached the Quarter finals this season and went out, after a replay
to eventual Cup winners Tottenham Hotspur.
So City finished in the league above the F.A. Cup winners that season and
Rovers progressed further than City in the F.A. Cup.

But that isn’t the end of the History lesson on this season. We have to return
to the F.A. Cup 3rd Qualifying round on 3rd November, where Rovers made
their entrance into the competition. They were given a Bye and so were
without a game. So they arranged an away game against Football league
opposition at Clayton Manchester.

CHIPPING SODBURY RESERVES HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent
two seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League
in 1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions
of Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but
come runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up
and getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol
& District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing
between the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in
the Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season
was another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combi-
nation Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combi-
nation. The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and
winning 5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Sea-
