CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY
In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought
back to the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the
Blue & White of Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn
(Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen) the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was Presi-
dent, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis
Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial 1959/60 season they en-
tered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the Youth Sec-
tion. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and through-
out the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump
continued in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few
changes and the ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and
'The Sods' began a Sunday Side. In the 1976/77 Season, Sodbury finished third in Divi-
sion 5 and gained promotion. The 1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished run-
ners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade off and celebrate twenty years of the club's
rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in 1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion
to Bristol and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the
end of the season, the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division
5, to the Senior League in six seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-
table finish and the end of the season saw Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate
appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following season we finished third. After
finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where we remained until fin-
ishing runners up in 1988/89.
The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier
Combination Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms
built with Players and Committee members contributing their trades. A fourth place
finish and the winning of the Premier cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far.
The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of the nineties, when they were promoted
to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.
The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of
2001/02 season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his
Assistant Jeff Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reins. A mid table finish
in their first season, saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw
another mid-table finish and the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players
now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a disappointing third place but the club now had a
third team as well. The following season, the previous year was forgotten when the club
won the Championship and promoted back to the Premier division. A mid table finish in
the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning promotion was a good season in
2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season, when the first's won the
Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol & District division
1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league and the
team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started
the steady march up the County league.
The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner
had taken the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his de-
parture early the following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place
finish was followed by two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was
appointed new manager at the beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had
promoted the club from the County league to the dizzy heights of Western League foot-
ball with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the new gaffer but with some new faces
and playing great football, we went 1 better the following season and won the Western
League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League Premier division was
tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was our most
successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons
our new gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make
things a little more difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup.
The season ended with a 13th place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place
in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the 2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club
and shortly afterwards we appointed our present manager Joe White and his assistant
Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club had finished 10th in the
Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history. The club were
successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season was in the Western League Premier. The uncertainty of which League we
would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball
was kicked that Season. Three weeks before the season started the club also lost our
Manager and his Assistant. Justin Bishop & Scott Gibson took control of the 1st team as
Caretaker management and remained there until the League came to an abrupt halt.
The F.A. announced on 26th March 2020 that the Step 1-7 game and all grass-
roots football leagues and competition under its umbrella had ended, as a result of the
Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic. All results for the season would be expunged.
The 2020’s begin with Jeff Roberts and his team, Drew, Sean & Nick steering the 1st
Team.

PLYMOUTH PARKWAY 4
Chipping Sodbury Town FC 0 Plymouth Parkway 4
Saturday 12 September 2020 – The Ridings, Chipping Sodbury
Early league leaders Plymouth Parkway were the latest visitors to the Ridings
and after two defeats in their opening two games the Sods were hoping to turn
their fortunes around.
The early exchanges produced the opening chance of the match for the home
side when Jordan Simpson put Kalum Youngsam through and his goal bound lob
of the oncoming keeper was cleared off the line by the Plymouth defender.
Jonah Beer’s shot from the edge of the box six minutes later was comfortably
saved by Moore in the Plymouth goal and as the game opened up both sides
continued to push for an opening goal. The home side were proving to be more
than a match for their visitors and it wasn’t until the fifteenth minute that they
threatened Simsek’s goal when Richards narrowly failed to get on the end of a
cross to the far post.
The visitors gradually took control of the next period of play and forced a series
of corners. The home defence proved up to the task and looked threatening on
the break. Josh Pandolfino worked hard leading the Sods line creating an opening
on 24 minutes after beating two defenders, only to see his teammate just fail to
control his cross field pass on the edge of the area.
A thigh injury to Simsek the home keeper on the half hour proved decisive. He
recovered but his mobility was slightly restricted and when Plymouth won a
corner with just two minutes of the half remaining Jordan Bentley rose
unopposed to head home from 6 yards and give his side a 0-1 lead at the break.
The visitors nearly added to their lead just two minutes later when Richards
chipped over from close quarters when it looked easier to score but it would
have been a cruel blow to the Sods who had helped to produce an entertaining
and high quality first half.
The second half began with the Sods looking to find the equaliser and just four
minutes in Youngsam was put through on goal after some excellent closing down
by the home midfield. He shot wide but it showed intent and the Sods could have
levelled just a few minutes later when a three on two break ended in a corner.
The fast pace of the first half gave way to a more scrappy second period with the
visitors resorting to the long ball and both sides struggling to gain a foothold.
The visitors looked the more threatening as the half progressed and on 65
minutes they took a two nil lead when substitute Landricombe volleyed from just
inside the area after the home defence had failed to clear. Just four minutes later
Landricombe added his second and his sides third when he again finished from
close quarters after the Sods had left him unmarked.
Plymouth added a fourth on 80 minutes when Richards took advantage of some
hesitant defending after a goalmouth scramble and fired home from just a few
yards out.
The Sods can take heart from a spirited first half performance against one of the
leagues strongest outfits. It is clear that as the season progresses the hard work
and determination of the players and the clubs new management team will start
to pay dividends.

FOOTBALL CLUB
In their long history Bishops Cleeve have led a much more nomadic existence than
many clubs, but have now been settled in the impressive Kayte Lane ground since
1997. For many years the club played on a ground in Stoke Road – with facilities
rebuilt and reopened in 1971 by the then secretary of the Football Association, Ted
Croker. The enforced move to Kayte Lane came about due to the old ground being
sold by the landlord.
The club enjoyed a brief period of success in the late 60’s – gaining promotion from
the Cheltenham League and winning four Championships in their six seasons in the
Gloucester Northern Senior League.
After dropping back to the Cheltenham League, Cleeve gained promotion into the
Hellenic League in 1983, quickly becoming a force in that division, finishing fourth
in their first two seasons in Div. One. This great start was followed up with a third
place finish, then winning the Championship and gaining promotion to the Premier
Division at the fourth attempt, and winning the ‘double’ by adding the Gloucester
Amateur Cup. A fantastic achievement.
The five seasons in the Premier Division proved to be a struggle for the Club, al-
though the team followed up their Cup success by adding another trophy to their
collection, winning the Premier Cup at the first attempt. The return to Division One
proved the catalyst for a period of rebuilding, on and off the pitch. The Club needed
to enter into a number of ground share agreements to preserve their League status –
Forest Green Rovers, Moreton Town, Wollen Sports and Highworth all allowed us to
use their grounds. This difficult period galvan- ised our club members, and the club
was kept running by the dedicated efforts of a few stalwarts – notably Cheltenham
Town legend, Dave Lewis, whose efforts were recognised by Carling Brewery,
awarding him their ‘Clubman of the Year’ accolade (and a year’s supply of beer!)
After approval for the Kayte Lane site was given in 1997, club members started the
building of the clubhouse and changing rooms – using materials kindly donated by
Smiths Aerospace (now GE Aviation) There followed a great transformation in the
team’s fortunes, and they duly secured another promotion in 2001 back to the Hel-
lenic Premier Division. In order to take this opportunity the club entered into another
ground share at Evesham United! 2003 & 2004 proved to be a landmark period for
the club – returning to ‘The Lane’ after the new Stand and floodlights were ap-
proved, achieving FA Charter Standard for Football in the Community, and the com-
pletion of the building and facilities.
In 2006 the team gained promotion to the Southern League, joining the Midland Di-
vision before being moved to the South & West Division a few seasons later, where
the club currently reside. The club has enjoyed mixed fortunes in their Southern
League time, generally enjoying mid-table security, with the highlight being season
2011/12 when the club finished with their best ever points haul (in a creditable 11th)
and reached the Glouces- ter Senior Cup final, played at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate
ground, where we unfortunately succumbed to a Bristol City side featuring two Full
Welsh Internationals!
With the departure of Alex Sykes to County rivals Shortwood United, the ex-
Cheltenham Town professional John Brough took the helm but left towards the end
of the season to join Cinderford Town. 2013/14 saw local lad Stephen Cleal take
charge with Derek Lightstone, as his assistant, both had a long history with the club
and they forged a close link with our Second and Third teams – as well a community
tie to Bishops Cleeve Colts Youth section – the future of the club seemed much more
secure on and off the field of play. After surviv- ing relegation in their first season
they put together a competitive team finishing 12th in the league and losing 1-0 to
Forest Green Rovers in the County FA Senior Cup. 2016/17 saw another first for
Steve winning the club’s first FA Trophy game.
2017/18 saw the arrival of Matt Jeynes to the management team another who had
played for the club in recent years and they later joined by Alex Lumsden Unfortu-
nately a number of players left the club and the season didn’t get off to a good start.
The team did rally towards the latter part of the Season but were relegat- ed after
losing the last game. So after 12 years we now look for a speedy return to Step 4 of
the NLS.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN RESERVES
BRISTOL PREMIER COMBINATION
CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN RESERVES HISTORY
When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent
two seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League
in 1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions
of Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but
come runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up
and getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol
& District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing
between the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in
the Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season
was another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combi-
nation Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combi-
nation. The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and
winning 5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Sea-
son saw the team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the high-
est league standing in the Reserves History. In the 2019/20 season the F.A. announced
on 26th March 2020 that the Step 1-7 game and all grassroots football leagues and com-

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN ‘A’ TEAM
Following a promising pre season, we came into our first season in
The Bristol & District Senior League with a decent amount of
confidence, but safe in the knowledge that we would have to play
at the very top of our game to challenge for promotion, relegation
or even mid table obscurity! The first three games have given
Rich and I plenty of confidence that we can compete in the league,
with 2 wins and a loss in our first 3 matches. Happy so far with 11
goals for, but room for improvement following 6 goals conceded!
I’d take it on the chin if they were all absolute goals of the season
contenders on Match of the Day, a number were down to simple
mistakes. All three matches have not had the same line up, due to
injuries, post COVID holidays, romantic meals and the addition
of another tattoo! Despite this, the spirit in the squad is evident
and this is giving Rich and I results on the pitch.

BRISTOL U18 COMBINATION
We Would Like To Welcome
Brian Cook
The New U18’s Manager
I would firstly like to thank the CSTFC Committee for their warm welcome to myself and my players
as this will be our first season at the club. During last season it was always my ambition to bring my
Yate Utd U16 squad to CSTFC as a new U18’s side competing on a Sunday for the 2020/2021 season.
I have now assembled a strong squad consisting of approximately 50% of my old U16 side and 50%
new players which I am expecting to compete at the top of our division. The squad will take time to
gel together as would any new squad, but early signs are encouraging. I am looking forward to the
friendlies and our first league match, at home V Olveston on September 20th @ 2pm.
My longer-term ambition of course would be to see some of my players move through the adult
teams and play for the first team, this was my main reason for joining CSTFC to provide a pathway to
adult football for my players.
I look forward to seeing you all supporting the CSTFC U18’s Sunday team!
Many Thanks
Brian Cook
