SECTION 1B: CHAPTER HISTORY

In 1984, the Greater Union County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. began as the Plainfield Area
Mother’s Group. Co-organizers Judith Marshall and Pat Hembree, together with five other mothers,
sought affiliation in a group that fostered the consciousness of children about their black heritage. Jack
and Jill provided an opportunity to enrich their children through family-centered cultural, social, and
educational activities. In agreement that Jack and Jill’s goals mirrored what the mothers wanted for their
children the group applied for membership.

In the spring of 1985, the application was accepted, and the group became known as the Union County
Area Interest Group, under the sponsorship of the Morris County Chapter of Jack and Jill. In April 1985,
the group held its first Membership Tea and twenty-three new members were installed into the group.
The chapter obtained provisional status during the National Convention held on July 24, 1985.
Twenty-seven mothers, beamed with pride as they were installed as members of the National
Organization of Jack and Jill on September 20, 1986.

The Greater Union County Chapter of Jack and Jill is now 35 years strong, and we remain focused and
committed to our core values - providing our children with outstanding programs, leadership
opportunities and outreach to our local community. We desire that our children work together and
cultivate bonds of goodwill. The Chapter Mothers plan monthly group activities for the children that
fosters bonds and enriches them in accordance with the thrusts set by the national organization.
Programming thrusts include Legislative, Educational, Cultural, Health, Financial and Civic/Community
Service.

Our children are divided into 5 grade groups. Beginning at the 2011-2012 program year and up through
today, the Grade Groups can vary based on the needs of the Chapter and are identified by the following
names:

● Grade Group 1 (2yr – Kindergarten) – Developers

● Grade Group 2 (Grades 1- 3) – Creators

● Grade Group 3 (Grades 4- 5) – Examiners

● Grade Group 4 (Grades 6-8) – Investigators

● Grade Group 5 Teens (Grades 9 -12) – Trendsetters

Over the years, we have welcomed many new families into GUCC, and as time passed many children,
who started out in the “Developers' ' grew up and graduated out of the “Trendsetters' ' grade group. The
growth of the children and the cultivation of their leadership capabilities are plain to see. Our teens have
served on Regional Committees and alumni have held Regional Teen Officer Roles in the past. The Jack
and Jill experience has manifested itself in the leadership capabilities as alumni have grown into adults
by starting their own businesses, being actively engaged in their professional life thus paving the way for
others behind them. The friendships and bonds that have formed in our chapter have lasted a lifetime,
with many of GUCC Jack and Jill alumni supporting each other through graduations, birthdays, key
milestones in life and when we are really needed during the loss of a loved one. We look forward to
increasing our village and continuing to walk in the ways and ideals of our ancestors.

In May 2013, GUCC installed an Associate Charter and inducted seven new associate members. Past
National President Tammy King, hailing from the Mighty Eastern Region, installed the initial Associates
Group. Our GUCC Associate members are active and engaged, having acted as Gavel Club Advisors to
our children, and have been an ongoing source of support and encouragement for our Chapter over the
years.

RECENT CHAPTER MILESTONES AND CELEBRATIONS

2022 Jack and Jill Day

We came together to celebrate Jack and Jill Day with a theme honoring HBCUs with our
annual Carole Roberson presentation, cheered proudly as our children participated in
the annual step-up ceremony. Jacks and Jills, Associates and prospective families arrived
in their favorite HBCU attire or a custom designed T-shirt with our theme. During the
event we incorporated games for each age group and all children participated in an
interactive activity titled “Get on the Bus” to learn about Carole Robertson.

Additionally, each year, on Jack and Jill Day, the chapter commits to a community service
project. This year, with a heavy increase in homelessness during COVID, we hosted a
supply drive where mothers, associates, and prospective moms gave donations to Family
Promise Homeless Shelter of Union County. We collected personal care products, baby
items, household supplies and more to assist in building the Bridge to Success for
families in need.

2020 – Celebrating our 35th Anniversary

After almost two years of connecting virtually, we reunited with current members and
Associates to commemorate our 35th Anniversary with a photo shoot. This year our theme was
the Family Reunion and incorporated the 35th Anniversary theme in all the GUCC signature
events, including Jack and Jill Day, our Gingerbread event, and Black Family Day.

Honoring our Thriving Thirty-Fifth Year as the Glorious Greater Union County Chapter.
Remembering one of our Beloved Jacks and his family.

2019 Eastern Region Conference - Host Chapter
In the summer of 2019, under the guidance of co-chairs Alia Souels-Parker and Gale Epps Peters, GUCC
was the Host Chapter for the Eastern Regional Conference held in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Regional
Conference was a huge success and undoubtedly set the bar high for other Host Chapters in the future.

10th Anniversary of GUCC Coat Drive
Over the last decade, GUCC hosts a biennial Coat Drive where we collect, donate and distribute
coats, hats and gloves to the Plainfield Action Services in Plainfield, NJ. During the months of
October and November, the mothers of GUCC gather and collect coats for children, women, and
men from their circles and networks. The collected coats are donated to a local organization
that serves the needs of the socio-economically disadvantaged in Union County.

Black Family Day 2022:

This event brought our families together to enjoy cultural entertainment similar to Sankofa, to
educate our children on the African Diaspora through dance and art. The event celebrated the
culturally rich history of the Black family. During the event, we continued to highlight our 35th
Chapter Anniversary and recognized all the families past and present that have contributed to
its success. This capstone event also highlighted how Jack and Jill families have helped to
impact the lives of those in the Greater Union County Area of New Jersey.

2021-2022 May Ceremony and Initiation of New Mother Members
GUCC was finally able to gather in-person to induct the new Executive Board, formally celebrate
the graduating teens and initiate 5 new mothers. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room as the
teens gave their speeches and shared their J&J experiences and the love they had for those who
impacted them the most. It was a very proud moment for all of the Mothers of the Greater
Union County Chapter of Jack and Jill to see the culmination of what all of us are working
towards.

Get Out the Vote (G.O.T.V.) – 2020 Legislative Activity
In early October of 2020, our Legislative committee organized our first, cross-group, community
Get Out the Vote (GOTV) event in the city of Union. This was the first cross-group event for
GUCC where our littlest Jack and Jill could participate and practice civic engagement in their
community. The Chapter helped register people to vote and educated them on how to vote by
mail. Carrying the JJOA GOTV theme forward, throughout the month of October, mother
members were encouraged to write letters and help with phone banking to increase voter
turnout. Click the link to view the video and pictures of our event:

SECTION 4: ANNUAL PROGRAM PLANNING MEETING

On June 12, 2022, at 1:00 pm, we held our Annual Program Planning Meeting. We had 25 mothers in
attendance. Although it had been a while since we had seen each other as a full group in person, we
made every effort to stay on task and to keep the session engaging and collaborative. The meeting
began with a welcome from the Program Director, Ebonique Silver who went through the agenda for the
meeting and was greeted by our Chapter President, Tonya Williams. PD Ebonique then kicked off the
meeting with a presentation of the lovely Program Committee and the group mom roles followed by the
Mission and Goals for the programming year and a review of our program Thrusts. The treasurer,
Andrea Woody, then presented important key factors around being financially and operationally
responsible and budget conscious when planning activities and events.

The second half of our meeting we went over assignments of the Tier 1 Committees and discussed the
Age group planning essential documents prior to members dividing by age group to begin the annual
planning. Each mom was charged with coming up with at least 2 ideas for each age group they are in.
The moms collaborated, activities were selected, dates were set, and calendars were created.

The age group moms reconvened, and each group mom presented their ideas to the chapter. All Mother
members had an opportunity to share feedback, suggestions and ask questions. Group moms were
scheduled to meet with groups over the summer to flush out the activity to include the 5Ws and how for
the planned activities and submit to the Program Director by the September 17th Mothers Meeting.
