Chapter 1- Early French Explorers
Jacques Cartier:
French navigator Jacques Cartier was born December 31 1491 in Saint
Malo Brittany France and was sent by King Francis I to the New
World in search of rich people and a new route to Asia in 1534. His
exploration of the st. Lawrence River allowed France to lay claim to
lands that would become Canada. He died in Saint Malo in 1557.
Established to France’s claim to what we now know as Canada.
Jacques Cartier reportedly explored the Americas particularly Brazil
before making three North American voyages. In 1534 King Francis I
of France sent Cartier on another trip to the eastern side of
North America but back then called the northern lands.
Chapter 2- Trade
The first Europeans to purchase fur from Indians were French
and English fisherman who during the 1500s fished off the coast of
northeastern Canada and sometimes traded with the Indians. In return
the Indians received European made goods such as guns metal cooking
utensils and cloth. When the first explorers came to North America
they hoped to find a large amount of gold and silver. This was not an
unrealistic expectation for when Hernando Cortes conquered the
Aztec Empire in Mexico in 1518 and 1519 he found incredible quantities
of precious metals so did Francisco Pizarro when he conquered the
Inca Empire in 1534.
Chapter 3- Missionaries role
Father Jacques Marquette was part of the Jesuit missionaries.
He went throughout the colony looking to convert native people. They
did not have a lot of converts because the french did not arrive in
large numbers. However the missionaries played an important role as
explorers and geographers in the mississippi region and the Ohio valley.
Chapter 4- Causes of the french and indian war
The french and indian war permanently shifted the global
balance of power. There were several causes to this war. One cause
was that the explorers moved onto native american land. Most
northern tribes sided with french.
