Taking care of yourself from the inside out is an essential aspect of overall well-being. It involves nurturing your physical, mental, and emotional health so that you can lead a fulfilling and balanced life. We look at the importance of holistic self-care and how to implement it in our daily lives. We all know the basics, right? Engage in regular exercise, eat a nutritious diet, get enough sleep, drink enough water. Such small and easy steps can feel overwhelming in your everyday life, so it’s important to understand the serious impact these can have on our wellbeing. A nutritious and balanced diet should start with whole foods, and include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, providing us with essential nutrients and support our overall well-being. Ultra-processed foods are high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and preservatives. Everywhere we turn, there are new products shouting about their health benefits – but be sure to actually check the ingredients. Drinking an adequate amount of water is also essential as it helps to keep our body hydrated and flush out toxins. It has been proven time and time again that exercise is essential for a long and healthy life. Regular physical activity not only helps in maintaining a healthy weight, but also reduces the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It boosts your mood, improves mental health, enhances cognitive function, reduces stress, and increases energy levels. Start small by going for walks and doing some stretching – if you’re not in the mood, remember, exercise releases endorphins ("feel-good" neurotransmitters) that can promote a positive mindset. Having a positive mindset is crucial for self-care. Taking care of our mental health is as important as looking after our physical health. Engaging in mindfulness activities such as meditation, journaling, or practicing gratitude can help alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. Setting boundaries and prioritising self-care activities can also contribute to a healthier mindset. It seems so obvious, but we all struggle with it. Maintaining healthy relationships and surrounding ourselves with positive and HIN supportive individuals can greatly 50.

impact our overall well-being. Building deep connections with loved ones, spending quality time with them, and nurturing those relationships can contribute to emotional stability and happiness. Additionally, taking breaks and allowing ourselves to rest and rejuvenate is crucial. Getting enough sleep is vital for our physical and mental health. Adequate sleep helps to repair our cells, enhances cognitive function, and boosts our immune system. Establishing a consistent sleep routine and creating a calming environment can promote peaceful, restful sleep. We all struggle to find enough hours in the day, but engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfilment to our lives is important. Pursuing hobbies and interests, practicing self-compassion, and engaging in self-reflection can help us reconnect with ourselves and find meaning in our lives. Try making a list of a few activities you enjoy, and find someone to do them with you. We’re better together, and sticking to our goals is easier with support. SELF CARE FROM THE INSIDE OUT When we prioritise self-care from within, we are better equipped to face life's challenges, embrace change, and lead a fulfilling and vibrant life. And don’t forget, we all need help sometimes in our life. Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of a friend or seek professional help if you need that extra push. With our inside taken care of, one of the most important things we can do is protect our outside. Skin is our body's protective barrier, and proper care ensures its health and radiance. You know what we’re about to say – wear sunscreen, and lots of it - to help protect yourself from those harmful UV rays. self-compassion and selfreflection can help us reconnect with ourselves 51.

More and more extensive research is being conducted on sleep and its impact on overall health and performance. This work has shed light on the importance of quality sleep and how it influences various aspects of our lives, from cognitive function and emotional wellbeing to physical health and longevity. But the key word here is ‘quality’. We’re talking deep, restorative sleep. Sleep is a fundamental process that consolidates memories and helps in learning new tasks and skills. During sleep, the brain forms new neural connections and strengthens existing ones, essentially solidifying the information we have learned during the day. Getting enough deep sleep, particularly during the night, significantly enhances memory and learning capabilities. Sleep deprivation has been linked to increased anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. This is because sleep plays a vital role in regulating the brain's emotional centres and maintaining a healthy balance of neurotransmitters. Lack of sleep disrupts this delicate equilibrium, leading to an increased vulnerability to negative emotions and a decrease in overall mental well-being. Research on the effects of lack of sleep on your physical health have been consistently associated with an increased risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. This is because sleep is crucial for the proper functioning of various bodily systems including metabolism, immune function, and hormone regulation. Disrupting the sleep-wake cycle can lead to dysregulation in these processes, resulting in detrimental effects on overall health. One of the factors emphasized in numerous studies is the importance of consistent sleep patterns and maintaining a regular sleep schedule. Our internal biological clock, known as the circadian rhythm, regulates our sleepwake cycles, hormone secretion, and a wide array of physiological functions. Disrupting this natural rhythm by irregular sleep patterns or exposure to artificial light at night can have significant consequences on our health. Sunrises and sunsets are often linked to romance – but exposure to natural light within the first 30 minutes of waking up helps reset your body's internal clock, signalling that it's daytime, reducing grogginess and promoting wakefulness. Witnessing the sunset (preferably outside) helps promote melatonin production, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. As the sun sets, decrease your exposure to bright and blue light sources such as electronic devices and LED bulbs. Instead, opt for warm, dim lighting to signal to your body that it's nighttime and time to wind down. Meditation ihave shown techniques, exercises anbetter sleeppractices beyour mind aoptimal envidoesn’t havelegged for hrelaxing sleeIt’s probably the most important thing we can do for our health and wellbeing, but we never seem to have enough time for it. By engaging in these fore bedtime, you can calm nd body, creating an ironment for sleep. This e to mean sitting crossours – try listening to a ep podcast before bed. If mindfulness isn’t for you, engage in activities that promote relaxation and help your body wind down, such as reading a book or taking a warm bath. Try to create an optimal sleep environment. Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature (preferably cool). Use blackout curtains or wear an eye mask, try earplugs or listen to white noise, and use comfortable bedding. Whilst improving your sleep quality is important, it’s just as important not to overwhelm yourself. Worrying about your sleep or making too many new changes can be counterproductive and lead to increased stress and anxiety, making it even harder to get a good night's sleep. Try adding one new habit a week to your routine. And be patient. Once you start to feel the benefits, you won’t even notice the effort. 68.

THE PRIVATE COLLECTION A SERIES OF ARTICLES AND OBSERVATIONS ON CURRENT CHANGING TIMES AND CUSTOMS On the Rocks HMS OFFSHORE: ON THE ROCKS? Part One Scholars and students of Daniel Defoe’s epic novel, Robinson Crusoe, seem to agree that he based this engaging account of human survival and ingenuity on the real-life story of Alexander Selkirk, who found himself marooned on one of the islands in the Juan Fernández Archipelago in September 1704, off the coast of Chile. Selkirk had been part of an expedition of two privateering vessels, sailing the Latin American coastline in search of Spanish cargo ships to seize and plunder. His vessel, the ‘Cinque Ports’, he deemed no longer seaworthy and after a heated dispute with the captain of the other privateer vessel, he impetuously chose to be put ashore on the uninhabited island. Prophetically, a short while later, the vessel, worm eaten and storm-damaged, sank due to its critical lack of seaworthiness. And Selkirk would not be rescued until 4 years and 4 months later. The story of privateering is an equally interesting one, linked to permissions granted by the British Admiralty to entrepreneurs, investors and seafarers during longstanding wars against France and Spain in the 18th and 19th Centuries, enabling them to operate against the shipping of an enemy. At the heart of it was the granting of a ‘Letter of Marque’, which was an official licence to hunt, attack and seize enemy cargo ships. The offshore islands of Guernsey and Jersey benefited from these interesting ‘fill-your-boots’ opportunities, which were a ‘win-win’ for the British 71.

authorities and the Channel Islands, alike. And as an example of the benefits thus brought, between the years 1702 and 1713, no less than 185 ‘letters of marque’ were issued to Guernsey captains, enabling them to subsequently capture nearly 800 vessels and their contents in that period. Yes, 800 ships and all their goods. Which worked out at approximately 2 ships per week. These rich ‘prizes’ would then be taken back to St Peter Port, Guernsey, and an admiralty court would try the case, judging whether the prize had been taken legitimately within the terms of international maritime law. If the prize was recognized as being legitimate (and it usually was), the proceeds were shared by the captain, crew, owner, and the investors in the enterprise, without any duties or taxes to the British Exchequer or Admiralty. And it was this very lucrative business that provided the foundations of modern-day Guernsey and Jersey. In this piece, I look at the offshore finance world (also named ‘tax havens’ by critics and detractors) focusing on the Crown Dependency of Guernsey, my historic home for 40 years, in the light of current turbulent and changing times, and see very dangerous waters ahead…but is the offshore finance world now on the rocks? ********** shipwreck found in St Peter Port Harbour and an impressive fort in Alderney) have been discovered in Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney to indicate a significant level of colonization and commercial activity. Economic activity was developed upon the sea trading routes created by Roman mariners, buying, storing and selling wines, ceramics, oil and pitch, and even slaves, amongst many other products. Guernsey became an important entrepôt harbour and stopping-off point, enabling ships to load and unload their wares, and temporarily store goods in waterside warehouses. Guernsey provided a place for the repair and maintenance of the wooden vessels, and was also an important salt-production centre, salt being a highly prized commodity and often used as payments in lieu of money. Hence the word ‘salary’. Once the Roman Empire declined and then disappeared, the Guernsey economy reduced, but many skills and ‘tools’ remained within the community. And the next period of expansion came in the 1700’s with two opportunities provided by its seafaring activities. With no natural resources of significance, Guernsey entrepreneurs and merchants had to seek a living elsewhere. And the creation of merchant ships provided the opportunity to build trade connections and routes with countries that needed their products to be transported, stored and sold. Wines, brandy, and port from Europe. Sugar, tobacco, tea and coffee from Latin America. Rum and sugar from the Caribbean. And slaves… The second related activity was Privateering, which effectively was ‘legalised piracy’. And this also created a very lucrative revenue source, at other’s expense. On the basis of this seafaring activity in the 1700’s and 1800’s, Guernsey’s businessmen, traders, entrepreneurs, merchants, lawyers, tradesmen and ship-builders amassed fortunes that enabled them to build the very substantial town properties that still stand today in such streets as St Julian’s Avenue, The Grange and Cambridge Park. Fruits of their labours, and of others… Guernsey, offshore finance centre and specialist in fiduciary wealth management and funds, has enjoyed a prosperous history over the past decades, always seemingly able to move quickly and cannily from one money-making opportunity to the next, as soon as the revenues started drying up. For such a small island, situated in the English Channel just 35 kilometres from the French coastline, it has done remarkably well. As is often the case in European history, it was the Romans that started it all, really. Their conquest of Britain around the first century AD included the Channel Islands, and Roman remains (including a 72.

Decline then came once more as times changed, followed by the First World War, and then the Second World War, in which the Channel Islands were occupied by Hitler’s Nazi forces, looking to use the Channel Islands as a stepping stone for the invasion of Britain. Thank goodness, it never happened, though they left their mark… And then we come to modern times. And once again, Guernsey shows it is ‘fleet of foot’. quantities. The famous Jersey Royal potatoes still feature on many international dishes. Guernsey even had its own Tomato museum to celebrate the great life-giving fruit. And then, once again, came the crisis. This time in the form of the emergence of the package holidays industry in the late 1960’s, when people suddenly saw greater value in going to Spain, Portugal and Greece. And where it was hot. And then came the attack from the mass cultivation of fruit, flowers and vegetables in Holland and Spain in the 1970’s. Guernsey produce was no longer competitive or viable. Growers went bankrupt overnight. Which then opened the door to the international finance industry. And what a door it became… perhaps the biggest money-spinner of them all. In a nutshell, like all the offshore world, the Channel Islands offered the opportunity to ‘park’ one’s money in the islands, discreetly, In the post-war period, Guernsey set about creating another ‘dual economy’, based upon the two prongs of tourism and horticulture. As a safe and British-like holiday resort Guernsey ticked many boxes for English and French holiday makers, who felt they were travelling abroad, but not quite… A foreign holiday but with a nice Englishness of family ‘bucket and spade’ seaside holidays. In the late 1950s, 1960’s and 1970’s Guernsey and Jersey were destinations of choice for British holidaymakers, and hotels and restaurants prospered. Additionally, horticulture on the island grew via the use of large glass greenhouses that tapped into the 2000+ hours of sunshine per year enjoyed by the islands. Flowers, tomatoes and vegetables were grown and shipped across the waters in huge quietly and with few traceable strings. A whole industry was created around fiduciary, private banking, legal, accountancy and tax services. And the money started rolling in…over the next 35 years. Until… Until times changed again.
