Maryland School Nutrition Association Serving Spoon, Spring 2023 | Page 51 News and Publications includes a plethora of reading material such as SNA's Magazine, the Journal of Child Nutrition and Management, SNA News, SNA Press Releases, newsletters such as Tuesday Morning, SNA Briefs, Brochures, SNA Research with topics such as 2023 School Nutrition Report, Supply Chain, Back to School Report, Pandemic Report, School Nutrition Trends, School Nutrition Reports, Participation Tracking, The Little Big Fact Book (excellent publication) and many more - take a look! About School Meals has School Nutrition Standards, School Meals Statistics, School Nutrition Success Stories, School Nutrition Professionals, National School Lunch Week, National School Breakfast Week, National Hero Day, etc. It's our own library just for our careers and professions, making it easy to find answers pertinent to our day to day operations. Advocacy has SNA's Legislative Action Center which as you know is a focus of all states who are trying to get the most financial support we can for the students we serve. Please read the Federal and State Legislative article because there is a lot going on in Maryland in the name of Advocacy. Interactions with federal agencies and Congress in the push to regain the Universal Free Breakfast and Lunch Programs through the federal government has turned into an opportunity at the Maryland General Assembly for possibly providing the funding for free School Breakfast and Lunch for all students in public and private schools. There are also additional resources posted under Advocacy for the following: • Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act Resources • USDA Policy Updates • USDA Resources: * USDA Policy Memos * USDA School Meal Regulations * Recent School Meal Federal Register Notices SNA comments * Complete Listing of USDA FNS Federal Register Notices, etc. The School Nutrition Association has been in existence since a short time after the Child Nutrition Act became law in 1946 under president Harry S. Truman. Since that time, SNA has accrued a huge membership and advanced School Nutrition Programs through training members, sponsoring conferences and meetings, advocating for legislation, meeting with other organizations to form coalitions for support, and of course providing all the answers to our questions and requests through their massive publication endeavors and communication methods to members and the public in general. I sincerely hope you take the time to open the MdSNA website and delve into all that is available to you, member or not, on both the MdSNA and SNA website (under Resources). Have a wonderful spring. May it be filled with great news about the Child Nutrition Programs. Mary Klatko, MdSNA Webmaster

Here is what you said: “We give some kids the only meals they are getting that day.” “We develop positive, supportive relationships with kids they may not otherwise have.” “We teach kids about healthy food choices and provide them with these choices.” And there are so many other reasons why you are so very important. Thank you for going the extra mile to help kids learn and grow to be healthy. They depend on you and look forward to seeing you!

Page 60 | Serving Spoon, Spring 2023 Maryland School Nutrition Association Carroll County SNA Happy New Year from Carroll County!! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. As an association we had a busy few months. In November we served our annual Thanksgiving Lunch to all of the students and staff. In December, we had a paint night with our food service workers which was a great success. It was nice to get out and just have some fun with each other outside of work. We are thinking about doing another paint night in the spring because everyone seemed to have a great time. Our association gave each worker a $20 gift card for the holidays. Sue Arrington, CCSFSA President Cecil County SNA Hello from Cecil County!! Our Christmas fundraiser helped us adopt several families in our school system! We were so happy we were able to give back to our kiddos who needed it! We just had a bingo fundraiser and we were blown away by how successful it was! Staffing shortages and a lack of substitutes have been a struggle for us, but at the end of the day the kids eat and that is what matters!! We are looking forward to a long spring break and being able to rock the rest of the school year! Kasey Williams, Kitchen Manager, CCSNA Garrett County SNA Hello from snowy Garrett County! We have had a fairly easy winter up until this third week of January, with only one snow day and two virtual learning days in December, but now we are seeing some winter weather. This week we had two weather related days. One was a virtual learning day and the second we were closed because of snow. Our Christmas dinner for members and guests started off the month of December. It was held at Hickory Environmental Education Center. We had a delicious ham dinner (thank you Cody), followed by fun and games that put everyone in a festive mood. Continued on next page. Maryland School Nutrition Association Serving Spoon, Spring 2023 | Page 61 Continued from page 52. During our meeting in December, we voted to make donations to three local charities. We are planning at least one fundraiser for early spring. LAC and spring workshops will be here before we know it. I am planning on attending both, and encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities. The 100th day of school is right around the corner and then the countdown to the end of another school year begins. There is a comfortable routine to this time of year. Enjoy each day! LuAnn Klink, GCSNA President Harford County SNA Happy almost spring from Harford County! HCSNA held our Annual Holiday card signing in December. We gathered for card signing, refreshments, and fun. Members delivered the cards with candy canes attached to our local nursing homes to spread some holiday cheer. Our new Social committee is designing and distributing birthday cards to members each month. Thank you to Leah Schmidt (Manager, Havre de Grace Middle/ High) for chairing this committee and designing such beautiful cards. We have been busy getting members back involved again. February's fundraiser is a romance raffle basket. The basket contains movie tickets and restaurant gift cards. We are also extremely excited about our upcoming Bingo in April! It will be here before we know it! We continue to promote SNA certification and have several team members working toward their level 2 and 3 certification. We congratulate those who are working so hard to achieve this goal! Jennifer Tribull, HCSNA President To learn more, visit us.Huhtamaki.com or call 800-244-6382. Maryland School Nutrition Association Serving Spoon, Spring 2023 | Page 63 On February 8th & 16th, Joe Petit joined MdSNA Members for our Annual Spring Workshops. His session was titled The Trust Imperative and discussed trust's importance in relationships and building teams. We look forward to Joe joining us at our upcoming Annual Convention with an education session and as our Keynote Speaker! Mr. Pettit is an author, keynote speaker and the founder of New Leaf Leadership, a consulting and development company. He uses his years of school nutrition leadership experience and expertise in leadership development and emotional intelligence to educate, equip and empower leaders. The MdSNA members that joined us found his sessions extremely valuable - "This session was very inspiring. I particularly enjoyed the accountability ladder. I can see myself using that tool for self-reflection as well as a tool for staff development," one member noted. Thanks so much to those that attended the workshop - can't wait to share the exciting educational sessions in store for everyone at the convention in October!

We are happy and excited to announce our new board members for our association. Our President is Loretta Tyler, President Elect is Lisa Corbett-Ryce, Secretary is Bonnie DeBoe, Treasurer is Laverne Reid, and Membership Chair is Lisa Hackney. We are looking forward to a great year ahead of us! Our association conducted a toy drive fundraiser to support the Marine Corps Reserves annual Toys for Tots Campaign in December. We had numerous items donated by our food service staff/ department. It was fantastic to see how our department was able to come together to help the less fortunate children of our community during the holiday season. An amazing job done by all. We hope all are staying safe and healthy and are having a great school year. Loretta Tyler, SMCSNA President Washington County SNA Our chapter has been very busy the last few months. We held our annual Toys for Tots “Fill the Meal Machine” event. Our chapter hosted a department holiday party in which we raised a lot of funds through tip jars and raffles. In January we held a member only potluck. Coming up in February, we are collecting items for a local no-kill animal rescue. In March we are hosting a public bingo, and in April a family Easter egg hunt! Lastly, we will be hosting our department wide family cookout in May to celebrate another school year.
