Page 52 | Serving Spoon, Spring 2025 Maryland School Nutrition Association Caroline County SNA Happy 2025! We had quite the start to this calendar year with a week’s worth of snow days - whew! We are finally settling back into our usual routine. We thought this would be the perfect time to warm the students up to a potential new menu item. We held a taste test in a couple of the schools with a yummy whole grain, low sodium sweet Thai chili chicken and vegetable ramen dish! Students and staff gave it an absolute thumbs up. This dish will be added to our 2025/2026 menus, along with a couple other new dishes! In addition to planning next year’s menus, we’ve also started the beginning stages of summer meal planning. Who can believe we are almost there?! But, before we can fully transition our brains to summer, we must attend to our current gardens…. Tower Gardens that is! For anyone who is not familiar with our Tower Garden project, these gardens are set up in every school - some are placed in the cafeterias and others in classrooms. Students, staff, and families are able to take some of the harvested food, while others are using it in classroom projects. Garden clubs and classes have harvested and had celebrations using the greens and herbs produced by the tower! Rachel Shelly’s 7th grade science class at Colonel Richardson Middle School has been using the Tower Gardens in their Matter Cycling and Photosynthesis unit. Students have observed the water tower to figure out how the hydroponic system works, and will be using the Tower Garden plants they have grown to investigate the inputs and outputs during photosynthesis. What a cool, hands-on way to learn! Right next door, at Colonel Richardson High School, students of Victoria Donovan’s Color Theory Art Class made Monoprints using the lettuce leaves grown in the towers. Monoprinting is a traditional type of printmaking where you can make a single print of an object. Students had to experiment with the media to figure out the best ways to make aesthetically pleasing artwork! We can’t get enough of these fun-with-food projects! Thank you all for reading - we must get back to feeding the kids! Here’s to a smooth finish to the school year! Kristi Conti, RDN, Nutrition Specialist, CCSNA From Around the State Networking News

Page 54 | Serving Spoon, Spring 2025 Maryland School Nutrition Association Continued from previous page. Cecil County SNA Hello from Cecil County. We did not have too many exciting things happening this winter in our county. Our chapter volunteered in a local neighborhood serving food and handing out gloves, hats and other personal hygiene items for Christmas. The kids were so happy to have new items and a hot meal. Along with our upper management, we started a countywide spirit day every month. So far we have had Christmas pajama day and crazy sock day. Seeing the participation from almost every kitchen in our county has been a lot of fun! We are preparing for our annual bingo which we are holding in the spring. It is usually our biggest fundraiser, so we are hoping to have a good turn out! Kasey Williams, Kitchen Manager, CCSNA Garrett County SNA Hello from a very snowy Garrett County! I know that everyone has had snow this winter but I think we have had more! We have had well over 82 inches of snow and I don't want to talk about our temperatures and wind chills. They were brutal! I think the coldest actual temperature that I saw was minus 17 degrees. As I finish writing this, we are home for a virtual learning day because of a pretty serious ice storm. We finished our cutlery fundraiser right before Christmas. Both of our fall fundraisers were very successful with lots of support from our members. We had a Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner planned for late November but we had to postpone it because of bad weather. Then it became a Christmas dinner. We held it at Hickory Environmental Education Center. It was a smaller group than usual but we had a delicious ham dinner and some fun and games. It was a great way to start December. I just registered for MdSNA LAC. I am looking forward to this opportunity that we get to talk to members of Congress and advocate for our children. I encourage everyone to consider attending. We really do make a difference. It's hard to believe that we have already reached the halfway point of this school year. Before we know it, the end of the school year will be here. Enjoy the routine of this time of year! LuAnn Klink, GCSNA President
