Scan code for more informationabout the programSummer has arrived! We have to celebrate our Spring successes. A big shout out to all those who attended Maryland Spring Workshops. Thank you to St. Mary’s County, Carroll County, Wicomico County for hosting Jodi Risse, MS,RD, LDN. Jodi presented five wonderful Spring WorkShops across our state. Attendees were given practical tools and strategies to enhance their communication skills. The skills she shared will help foster teamwork, trust and customer service. Some managers reported back that they were able to put their new skills learned to practice the very next week. A big thank you from our association to Jodi Risse for her unwavering support of MdSNA. The workshops would not have been complete without some tasty treats from all of our Industry Partners who provided some scrumptious food and delicious desserts. I traveled with President-Elect Cody Wilt, Vice President Sue Arrington, and MdSNA Executive Secretary Michele Switzer to attend the National Leadership Conference held in Kansas City, Missouri. The National Leadership Conference provided many wonderful sessions on leadership essentials, Roberts Rules of Order, nonprofit responsibilities, parliamentary guidance for board meetings, legislative updates, the pros and cons of having a state management association, and state association networking. Ready or not, summer is upon us. For some of you, we will see you when the bell rings again, and for others you will be serving summer meals across Maryland, supporting summer camps and summer school with breakfast, lunch and snacks. Food and Nutrition heroes never stop. As we all know in this profession childhood hunger does not take a vacation. Thank you to all who will serve our communities across the state this summer.Do not forget to plan for some fun and team building activities by grabbing a few cafeteria work friends and heading on August 13 and 14 for our wonderful MdSNA 71st Convention. We are changing the Game! The convention will be held at the Live! Casino and Hotel location in Arundel Mills. Change your professional game this coming school year, spend time developing professionally, take a spin around the food show floor. We will have a large variety of vendors. On the showroom floor you may sample some new products, give feedback to vendors, your director and menu planner. Directors find something new on the showroom floor, change the game on what you offer the students this coming school year. In the evening, we celebrate our successes with an awards ceremony, some food and fun. Page 4 | Serving Spoon, Spring 2026 Maryland School Nutrition AssociationPRESIDENT'S MESSAGE, contd.President-Elect Cody Wilt has worked hard planning this centrally located convention for all our Maryland School Food and Nutrition Professionals. We are all like the colorful beach ball. We all hold together this profession and contribute our efforts, our talents, and our gifts to serve students. We are the sum of the parts. If we take the beach ball apart, let the air out, it's just a bunch of colorful parts deflated. If we put it together, put air inside, the ball can be sent far and wide. Let us change the game this year, show up for Industry and let them hear from you. Decision makers across the state come to the show and let industry know what your needs are for your student population. Come see old friends and meet new ones. We are all in this profession together. Maryland MdSNA wants you to know you are the part that matters to this organization. Let's learn and grow together. See you August 13 and 14. “Live” is not that far from any part of Maryland. Warmest regards, Cherie CotsonasMdSNA President, 2025-2026It's time to register for MdSNA's 71st annual convention. We will be at a NEW VENUE this year and we are so excited.Click here for online registration. And don't forget to book your discounted hotel room now at the gorgeous Maryland Live! in Hanover, Maryland.

Page 38 | Serving Spoon, Spring 2026 Maryland School Nutrition AssociationHappy Spring School Nutrition Professionals!I attended my first state School Nutrition Association conference alone, many years ago. I was new in my job and new to school food service. I didn’t know what to expect but wanted to learn more about how to provide healthy meals to lots of children.I met another brand-new director at that meeting, who became my “phone a friend” buddy when I didn’t understand a new regulation or just needed someone to listen who understood the work. And I became their go-to person. I met many, many more people over the years at conferences who have helped me become better at work and as a person. Some even became good friends too! The networking opportunities at conference enabled me to find resources and good ideas from across the state and beyond.I also was amazed at all the food options offered at the food show. So many delicious choices to choose from! I learned about large equipment and small utensils and cleaning supplies and more. I found resources to promote the school meal programs and update the cafeterias. I learned from so many speakers over the years on so many topics that helped me improve the school meal programs that I oversaw. The professional development gained at conference
Maryland School Nutrition Association Serving Spoon, Spring 2026 | Page 39provided data, innovative strategies, and learning sessions that improved my leadership ability and program management. I also learned how to speak in public, as I took my turn leading learning sessions. I found out what ‘Roberts Rule of Order’ meant when I served on the state association board of directors. These skills and training improved my confidence in advocating for the programs that serve our children. As I reflect on all that I have learned and experienced at conferences over the years, I realize that prepared me for my current role as the State Director for Maryland. I am grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way.I tell you my story to encourage you to attend this year’s Maryland School Nutrition Association 2026 conference – Changing the Game! August 13 & 14 at the Maryland LIVE Casino and Event Center in Hanover. You will meet people and learn new ways to improve your school meal programs and Change the Game! See you there!
