BanquetJunior/Senior
Victoria Paul (‘19)

In the fall, all the Juniors gathered together and
started to plan. We really had no idea what
we were supposed to do; but with a bit of
help, things started coming together. A venue
was found, entertainment was prepared, and
the food was ready to be catered. Before we
knew what had happened, it was April and
we were getting ready for the Junior/Senior
Banquet.
While J/S was originally supposed to
be on April 13th, it was move ahead to April
12th due to forecasted snow. People started
showing up at about 6:00 for pictures; this
went on for about 45 minutes and then it was
time for the grand march. It was pretty cold
and windy outside, so all the girls would have
been in bad shape if it had not been for the

gentleman escorting us who gave us their suit coats to
wear. Once the grand march was over and the last few
pictures had been taken, it was time for the food.

The Silver Spur from Pierre was hired to cater,
and they showed up with a delicious meal of beef tips,
garlic bread, and lettuce salad. Once we had stuffed

ourselves with all that food we
were expected to eat cake!
Unfortunately, many of us did
not have the stomach capacity
needed to eat much cake, but it
was sure good to look at, if not
eat. During dessert, some staff
and alumni did a skit about
getting ready for J/S. The end
result of that was a lot of mess
and laughter! After that, the
predictions were read to the

6 | The Crusader

seniors and the seniors read their wills to the
juniors; both were appreciated.

When all that was finished, everyone
rushed to clean up and beat the storm home.
J/S ended up being a lot of fun, even
though there was some stress involved with
not being sure when it actually was. All the
work paid off and everything
turned out pretty well. I was
very thankful for the adults who
helped us plan J/S and did so
much of the work themselves.
While it was kind of fun plan-
ning and then attending J/S, I
am looking forward to letting
next year’s juniors plan it and
just showing up for the fun!

Student Testing

Late April once again brought standardized testing, that time when
SBA’s students complete the Terra Nova, Third Edition (TN3) test.
SBA’s mean scale scores exceeded the national norm group in every
subject area in grades 7-12 on the TN3 except for seventh grade social
studies, and the SBA score was just two points below the national norm
score there. The largest number of students in any of our K-6 classes was
two, meaning those scores are not as statistically meaningful for national
comparison. However, the elementary students also did a great job and
exceeded the national norm group in most areas.

These students scored in the 99th percentile in individual subject tests:
Willie Anderson (11) - Math Computation, Math Composite, Science
Talix Babb (10) - Vocabulary, Language Mechanics
Shelby Belmore (11) - Language
Shariah Brockel (10) - Language Mechanics, Language Composite
Titus Deal (9) - Math Computation
Abby Haun (9) - Math Computation, Math Composite, Social Studies
Autumn Hoffman (11) - Reading, Reading Composite, Language,

Language Mechanics, Language Composite, Total Score
Joshua Hofman (12) - Language Mechanics
Taylor Michaelis (9) - Math Computation, Math Composite
Iver Paul (10) - Language Mechanics, Science
Victoria Paul (11) - Reading, Social Studies
Renee Seaman (12) - Reading, Vocabulary, Reading Composite,

Language, Language Mechanics, Language Composite, Total Score
Rebecca Van Bockel (9) - Language Mechanics
Taylor VanHeuvelen (10) - Reading, Language Mechanics
Cassidy Watson (9) - Reading, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension
Owan Watson (5) - Reading, Math Computation, Math Composite
Susan Wilken (12) - Language Mechanics, Math Computation

The 99th percentile is the highest possible rating, and we commend
the seventeen students above for achieving that rating in their respective
subject areas. Overall, forty-one students scored in the 90th percentile or
higher in a total of 197 test categories!

There are thirteen total test categories in the TN3. Special congrat-
ulations to Iver Paul and Cassidy Watson, who both scored in the 90th
percentile or higher in at least ten of the thirteen categories, and to Talix
Babb, who did so in all thirteen categories!

BOYS TRACK

TJamie McClain
he track season was
shortened due to spring
rain and snow, resulting in a
late start to the meet sched-
ule. Despite that, and having
to nurse a few key injuries,
the boys’ team finished
strong to claim 8th place at
the South Dakota state track
and field meet in Rapid City. Jace Burma
took runner-up honors in the 800 meter run
and the three long relays placed second
(medley), third (4x800) and third (4x400).

Christopher Hass capped off a success-
ful career as one of the most decorated
track athletes in SBA history. He medaled
nine times at the state meet and ran the
400 meter leg on the wining and school re-
cord setting medley relay unit at the 2018
Howard Wood Dakota Relays. His love of
the sport, work ethic, and leadership by
example will be greatly missed. The other
senior on the team, Josh Hofman, showed
great willingness to fill in where needed,
and his enthusiasm was a great encourage-
ment to the team. Next year’s team will
need to step up to fill the void created by
their departure. We appreciate the efforts
put forth by all the members of the boys’
track team this season. They represented
the school honorably and demonstrated
perseverance in the face of many challeng-

Corner Ashley Ritenour
50th Anniversary Celebrated!
June 1-3, 2018 brought seven SBA grad-
uates from 1968 and their spouses together in
Tyler, MN. Seven alums out of 15 were able to
attend the reunion and included Leo (and Linda)
Pedersen, John (and Barbara) Sanders, Kelsie Kirsch Myers (and Danny),
Shirley (Shippy) Shelbourn, Judy (Langland) Good, Kathy (Hill) Monroe, and
Ede (Olinger) Crosby. The class was kind to let me also join their reunion as a
representative from SBA and get to know them better as alums. This 50th Re-
union was scheduled in Tyler, MN to be where Dwayne Snell lived, a ‘58 SBA
graduate and former SBA staff member from ’64-’69. Sadly, Dwayne went
to be with the Lord on January 17, 2018 at the age of 81 but the ’68 class
decided to keep the location for their 50th Reunion in Tyler to be close to the
Snell family who lived there, including Dwayne’s wife Sandra.

The Reunion was held at the Danebod Folk School which was originally a
boarding school for Danish immigrants who had settled in the Tyler-area and
the school taught them how to speak/read English and other skills in the late
1800’s and early 1900’s.

Throughout the weekend, we ate delicious food and the class shared very
humorous stories of their time as SBA students. Laughter brought tears to our
eyes more than a few times as they shared memories on what the dress code
was like in the 60’s, former dorm roommates, boy-girl interactions, gratis
responsibilities, disciplinary situations, and yearbook quotes including “Keep
the Faith, Baby” from John Sanders and “Book and I are unconventional, what
I know is unintentional” from Leo Pedersen.

Friday and Saturday evenings were special times of worship and God’s
Word being preached by Rev. Drake M. Snell, one of Dwayne’s sons. Drake
incorporated their ’68 class motto “More Than Conquerors” into his messages
and spiritual challenges in memory of his father.

I’m blessed to have been part of this 50th Reunion. The impact of how
the Lord continues to work through the ministry at Sunshine Bible Academy in
the lives of past, present, and future students is simply amazing. The biblical
foundation and impact of the family of SBA has lasted these classmates of
’68 a lifetime and they are still serving the Lord. What a testimony!

P.S. If you are arranging a class reunion, please let me know – I’m happy to help and
travel to join your time together. We are always happy to host the reunion here at
SBA as well. Thank you!

SBA Foundations we look at the picture of David Paul

our 2018 graduates, we

Acould only want to see more
faces in that wonderful group of

young men and women. Enrollment

in the high schools across rural South

Dakota is becoming smaller. Why?

Fewer kids. Why? We can see a

combination of reasons that all make

for fewer kids: bigger farms and ranches, fewer small town main street

businesses, more mechanization, fewer workers, fewer families, smaller

families. You need only to count the deserted homesteads on the roads

leading to Sunshine to realize that there were more families living in the

vicinity of Sunshine sixty years ago than today. The number of drive-

in students is less and SBA is now mostly a boarding school. Should our

enrollment be negatively affected so much by the facts outlined above? I

don’t think so.

I believe that the SBA staff is doing an excellent job of teaching and

training students in a good high school curriculum that honors God’s Truth

for today’s youth. But this all comes with a price tag. We need and want a

good staff. We need and want a good and well-maintained campus. The

school board’s budget puts about one half of this cost on student tuition,

now costing these young families about $10,000 per student per year. For

many of these parents, this cost comes at a time in their lives when their

dollars are stretched. They need help. There are some “helps” for some of

these families in the form of scholarships and special deductions, but we

need to encourage these parents to know that if they have the “will” to

send their high school student to Sunshine, it can and will happen.

This past week I received a west coast phone call from a couple want-
ing to establish a family endowment with the earnings each year to go to
student scholarships. Those phone calls sure do make my day! Any of the
SBA Foundation board members would love to get your call. You can find
telephone numbers on the SBA website.
