KUH·ROW·NUH VIRUS?
The world is sailing on uncharted waters thriving against the storms of uncertainty,
pulling down the anchors of sanity. 2020 was one heck of a rollercoaster looking back,
and Covid 19 was adding fuel to the fire. An occurrence that never crossed the human
mind's vastness was embodied into straightforward reality. Now, seeing the world recover
from its tremors only made me recall how this whole situation affected me as a person.
Much has been said and will be said but what I find the most fascinating is the
drastic lifestyle changes inflicted on us irrespective of our caste, creed, status, wealth,
gender, race and any other boundary humans have designed. The pause button was
pushed, and the hustle-bustle culture tumbled down. We were all shoved into our houses
caged between the four walls and restricted from our everyday lifestyle. We adapted so
that the schools that never allowed carrying phones were now in fact conducted in those
phones. It's crazy how everything turned upside down in a few days, and it had a toll on
my life in both a positive way as well as in a negative way.
Honestly, at first, this whole situation seemed disorienting. We were barred from doing
everyday activities like going for a walk or shopping, even the normalcy like attending
school and church. Our line of sight was restrained, and the world seemed to be closing
in on us. This, although it was a period of redefining our perspectives on the norms set
by the society on how certain things must be done. For instance, I never imagined how
feasible campaigning speeches could be given on zoom and elections take place online
and even investiture conducted at our own respective houses. What earlier used to
require months of practice and efforts now could be done in days. And this is what I
define as 'change'.
In many aspects, this change was quite welcome in my life. It imposed a long break after
a tedious period of writing boards. It gave time to let off steam and served doses of
mindfulness and stillness and brought down the pace of life. Now the whole family that
used to rush out early in the morning and then come late at night after school, work,
sports practices and tuitions were stuck together for an entirety of multiple months
playing cards and ball games on the terrace watching the sun sinking low below the
horizon. Cooking and painting, laughing and talking, every moment was etched into
memory.
However, as high the peaks go, so must the lows deepen. Reading only horrifying news
daily is just the start. Seeing the numbers increase day by day tolled us mentally beyond
help, and at one point we all became numb to the numbers. The flicker of humanity in
our eyes dimmed, and we stopped being affected. We realised all that is going on out
there was beyond us.
Honestly, even today I find it challenging to wear masks that fog up my glasses every
time I exhale and gloves that sweat my hands like crazy. Not even being able to meet up
with friends and family, and the only face you regularly see apart from your family being
the dentist sure gets tiring. In the end, this situation was most definitely an eye-opener
as to how limited we humans are that even a micro virus was able to shatter the global
economy and how powerless we were. It patently threw light on the importance of one's
health more than anything else. Although, it's quite fascinating how we humans were
able to adapt this well, and this is an apt example of how unstoppable
humanity can be if determined. This virus made an impact not just in my
life but also in yours and the entire human race. After all, is said and
done, stay home and stay safe.

Space and beyond
For decades, humans have been exploring space. Before we could just explore by
telescopes, we now have the technology to send satellites, space probes, and even a
space station. Organisations such as NASA and SpaceX and many other space
organisations are trying to conquer space by every step they take. Among these
stands our two most unique and popular space organisations, NASA and SpaceX.
NASA is a national space organisation, and SpaceX is behind the great minds of
Ellon Musk, the founder and the current CEO of SpaceX. Ellon Musk is not just the
founder of SpaceX; he is also the founder of Tesla motors. SpaceX has been
inventing multiple machines that have changed the world. One of the most
significant inventions is to have the first stage rockets to land instead of dropping
in the sea. They even launched a $100,000 Tesla roadster into space. That may
sound crazy, but it is shown as an advertisement to other space organisations.
That's why NASA has assigned contacts for SpaceX, such as sending food resources
to the International Space Station (ISS) and many others. This was a big step for
SpaceX.
SpaceX has had many space shuttles. But most of them crashed and have been
destroyed such as the Falcon Land 2. But they use the damaged rockets' remains to
create a new rocket. So, it was a process of trial and error, but they never gave up
and kept trying until they succeeded. In 2012, Ellon Musk unleashed the idea of
creating and landing 1st stage orbital rockets. People thought it was impossible
until in 2018 they succeeded in returning the Falcon 9 rockets. With this
significant step, they have reduced the price of building rockets.
You may be wondering how they get so much money. Here's how, Ellon Musk used
the money from PayPal and Tesla Motors to create a new company, SpaceX. They
started their first rocket Falcon 1, which cost them 95 million dollars. They used it
until 2008 when it crash-landed. So, it's a 95 million dollar loss. But then they used
the rocket's remains to create a new rocket. They got around 20 million dollars, but
there is an approximately 60-million-dollar loss. So, it went on like this until they
succeeded in making a rocket. This is how they earned money.
Space is infinite, it is expanding, and it's the universe. There is much more for us
to explore. But we progress with each step we take, there will be disasters, and
there will be explosions. But from our experience, we will get to know the mistakes
that we have done, and we will be able to understand how to prevent the obstacles
and proceed with our mission.

Usefulness of space exploration
"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Neil Armstrong's 1969 lunar landing was one of humanity's most significant
accomplishments. Since then, they have found an infinite supply of knowledge and
resources awaiting us outside our atmosphere. However, critics are beginning to
argue. A significant proportion of expenditure is spent exploring space in many
countries. It is argued that this expenditure should be spent on other essential
things.
However, in my opinion, keeping other significant things
in mind, the space program is very crucial and vital for
the whole world and should be funded. First, a reason to
support is that these days businesses and organisations
are being expanded geographically, they need a
communication channel to run these businesses
effectively. It has become possible after launching
satellites in orbit. For instance, NASA has launched
many satellites in orbit and is used to broadcast audio
and video signals across the globe. Moreover, satellite
television becomes possible, and people can watch global
events from anywhere.
Furthermore, as global warming has become a severe concern for the whole world,
scientists have started to find an alternative planet to live. For instance, ISRO has
been funded by the Indian government, and they have managed to launch their
satellite. To resolve the problem of global warming space programs should be aided
financially.
Thus, every country needs to give financial support to these programs. There is a
need to get together the whole world to improve communication and fight against
environmental problems so that the next generation can live in a better place.

Make Healthy 'Me Time' a Priority
"Say it loud, and say it proud: Me, me, me! Okay, maybe you don't want to shout it, but
it is important."
Doing things that we enjoy the most makes us happy. The feeling of happiness reflects
positivity, healthiness and a sense of fulfilment. The most important relationship is
the one you have with yourself. It is so important to take time for yourself and find
clarity. It is the time to take charge of your happiness and health
The time you make for yourself is the most predominant in the word. It's not selfish to
take time and care for yourself, and it is a necessity. It can lower your stress and
can also make you energetic and productive. Doing things that feed you mentally,
physically and spiritually will certainly bring patience and a positive attitude to
your relationships. Self-care is, after all, giving the world the best of you, instead of
what's left of you. The demands of modern-day life are overwhelming. Whatever your
lifestyle demands, you have to make sure you don't burn out. Just spending five
minutes every day can replenish your spirit. Focus on taking deep breaths; it can
bring your stress levels down. Energise your muscles by doing simple exercises.
Closing your eyes, listening to music or meditating can also make you relaxed. The
human brain was not built for extended periods of focus. We have to take regular
breaks to stay productive. Doing something enjoyable can refresh your body and
mind and get you back on the track. Switch off technology and take a break for
yourself.
Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.
Self-care allows you to serve others from the overflow. It's okay to take a little time
out of your busy life to just focus on you. Put yourself at the top of your To-Do List
every single day, and the rest will fall into place. Make time for you today to RELAX,
REFLECT AND RECHARGE!

Good Hours
Since discovering the corona virus, we are following eat, sleep, study and stay at
home cycle. At first, it was hard for me as well, but now I have figured it out with
my friend Zafar.
It’s 11 a.m... I finished my homework. This is my favourite time of the day, and I
call Zafar to play. My father has bought me block toys and a scooter. Today we have
planned to make a secret superhero headquarters with blocks’ help. I will get
dressed up as “captain”, and he will be a “Superboy”. Together, we will fight our
imaginary enemies who stop us from going to school.
I wish I could fight this corona Virus the same way so that we will go back to school.
We will…

My sister and I study in the same school (SIS) and therefore spend a lot of
time together. During the lockdown, we could explore various places.
During the lockdown, my sister and I spent a lot of time together. We did
many things such as gardening, cooking, playing, ukulele etc. During the
winter holidays, we went by ferry from Kuwait city to Failaka Island. We
stayed in the heritage village and had a lot of fun for over three days.
We visited the museum, explored war site, played card, Uno, football
games with our family. Not just this, we also helped in cooking and
cleaning. During the day we saw a free camel herd, visited the zoo, had a
ride on a horse, roamed around the island. Then during the evening, we
watched movies and ate yummy food!
We also went to many beaches and had the cold breeze fall on our faces.
“Ohh what a feeling.”
Not just this, I and my elder sister baked a brownie for New Year and ate
it with hot chocolate. It was delicious.
I always love spending time with my sister.

My Life Now and Then..
Global population are leading a life with phobias and apprehensions whether the
deadly virus charge them today or tomorrow. Most of us lead a ‘constrained life’
spending majority of the time inside the four walls of home, watching latest updates
and frightening statistics about the pandemic. As an expatriate leaving away from
motherland, this covid time is a real eye opener and living lesson for me. I studied
and implemented many positive changes in my life. Social and professional living
with a mask, decisive actions and activities without gatherings.
Following the introduction of vaccines and smart covilife style, I hope we can defeat
the virus with in a short span of time. Even though we are the successor, this tiny
organism taught a lesson to us – “ lesson of sustainability”- With in near future, we
should be sustainable and self -reliant in every aspects following the law of

CREATIVITY IS A PROCESS NOT AN EVENT
In January 1879, Edison had built the first high resistance, incandescent electric light or
simply the light bulb. Edison tested over 3,000 designs of bulbs and 6,000 different plants
to test which burned the longest for his filament; before finding the perfect match that cre-
ated his bulb.
The story of his light bulb is well known and has long been told as an example for never
giving up however the story also shows us how he put in dedicated hard work into his cre-
ative idea.
Researchers have found that nearly every individual has a ‘Creative streak’; they also
found that as children grow up their creativity decreased. They then came to a conclusion
that ‘Non-creative behaviour is learned’ but why is it so?
Creativity is supposed to be focused on the path rather than the result. Easy enough to
theorize than practice. In my experience most people shy away from doing an activity be-
cause they are afraid of the result. They are afraid of looking stupid or by the embarrass-
ment that would follow. How many times have you not written something for the fear of
appearing stupid or maybe not put an idea out there due to rejection; maybe even left
something unfinished due to the fear of rejection, once you do finish.
It is easy enough to have one of those light bulb moments in your life - One of the most
important points being, getting proper sleep. Being sleep deprived will lower your thinking
process just as fast as it will physically tire you. Another point to keep in mind is to col-
lect knowledge. Try to read and write more often. Try to get out more and experience
what nature itself has to offer. Ask more and more questions in your everyday life.
Curiosity and creativity many at times go hand in hand. Let them come knocking at your
door by practicing these simple points. Put in the hard work needed, be consistent and go
through the process and you can be creative too!

ART TALK – In conversation with an artist
Mr. Sreekumar Vallana is a water colour artist and a social worker who uses his
artistic skills to contribute to society in a unique way. He had recently undertaken a
Portrait challenge where he drew portraits and contributed all the funds received to
the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief fund (CMDRF) for COVID.
I was introduced to his talent through his daughter, Adhya Sreekumar, student of
UKG Leo.
Being an art lover (having some experience in painting, myself), I noticed that
Mr. Sreekumar is an extremely good water colour artist and his painting during the
art contest for Odyssey 2019 (conducted by SIS) was a testimony of this.
Rekha Jaypal: Congratulations! You have been conferred with many honours and you
have been in the news and social media for your contribution to society. What made you
take up this challenge?
Sreekumar: Thank you! I always had the desire to contribute to society and have been
planning to do this portrait challenge since the past few years. I wanted to do this during
the Kerala floods, but due to certain constraints, could not go ahead with it. I felt these
challenging times were the most appropriate to do this and started making water colour
portraits of people. I charged Rs. 1000 per picture. My intention was to contribute the
amount collected to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.
Rekha Jaypal: That’s great - can you brief us about the portrait challenge?
Sreekumar: I had set myself a challenge to complete this in 100 days. I drew 90 portraits
of different people, which included many prominent personalities. The time taken to
complete this was 270 hrs. and I managed to collect Rs 1,23,456, which I then contributed
to the chief minister’s distress relief fund, by handing it over to the Director of Kerala
Pravasi Welfare Board, Mr. N. Ajithkumar.
Rekha Jaypal: So, are you an artist by profession? Seeing how good you are at painting ..
Sreekumar: I am not a professional artist; painting is my passion that is why I am
pursuing it. I am working in Al Mojil pharmaceutical company, Kuwait currently.
Rekha Jaypal: Have you learnt painting?
Sreekumar: I have not had any professional training in painting, except for a short
training in water colours from Artist. Ravindran. My mother tells me this skill was
inherited from my uncle who was an artist.
Rekha Jaypal: I see … well, water colour is generally a difficult medium for me, personally
… what made you choose it as yours?
68 Melange 2020 - 21
Metamorphosis- KG segment
Sreekumar: I initially started with water colours as it was easily available and
comparatively cheap. Later I developed a liking for this and continued working with water
colours. Though it is considered a difficult medium to master by many, I find it as a very
easy and beautiful medium to work with.
Rekha Jaypal: What is the reaction or response from your family especially your
daughter?
Sreekumar: I had incredible support from my family and friends. My wife Divya who is a
staff Nurse in Amiri hospital and daughters Adhya and Ayana were my pillars of support.
Adhya used to attend the online classes independently when I was busy painting, helping
me in her own little way.
Rekha Jaypal: A lot of appreciation and awards have come your way; can you tell us a
little about that?
Sreekumar: My parents encouraged me right from my childhood to participate in all the
competitions and I have won many awards during my school and college days. The
support of my parents has been a key factor, they also instilled in me the value to
contribute to the society in whatever way I can.
Rekha Jaypal: Thank you, do you have any words of advice to budding future artists?
What should they be doing to develop their talent and skills?
Sreekumar: Children need to observe the world around them – what do you find
interesting that makes you want to draw or paint? Practice is very important – use any
opportunity to keep drawing and painting. Competitions are a good way of keeping and
enhancing your skills.
Parents need to send their children for some training, at least in the beginning, for proper
guidance and development of technique.
Rekha Jaypal: Thank you Mr. Sreekumar. We at Smart Indian School are proud and
privileged to have a parent like you, who has set an example to all of us.

supporting parents, teachers and all those who associated with Melange 2020-21 directly or
indirectly. I would be failing in my duty if I did not thank and mention the names of Ms. Bhavitha
Bright ( for discussing and writing submission guidelines and procedures,), Ms. Riddhi Gondaliya,
Ms. Hiral Dabhi and the entire faculty of science who were a constant support for me in this project.
Thank You All Once Again……….
