2023 Summer Newsletter

CLS Summer Newsletter 2023

CLS NEWS Cleveland Land Services (Guisborough) Ltd. Summer 2023 This Summer has been as busy as ever. The natural and synthetic teams have been working on numerous projects across the country, including a large natural turf project for Middlesbrough FC and continued 3G pitch installations on the Football Foundation Framework. The Landscape and Earthworks teams have continued to work on projects such as the Northallerton Environmental Scheme, Levenside Footpath Upgrade and Angrove Country Park to name a few. Construction in general has been more difficult through this period than that of last year due to the persistent wet conditions throughout July and into August. We appreciate everyone’s best efforts in progressing our projects in our busiest period even when conditions have been far from ideal. CLS Selfdrive have continued to support our contracting projects whilst also increasing hire revenues with non CLS hires. This is evident from our further recent investment in our forklift, tractor and trailer fleet. Looking towards the latter part of the year and early 2024, it is worth noting that the company has secured a healthy amount of work. We have recently been awarded fourteen 3G pitches and numerous large-scale natural turf pitch construction projects. This is in addition to our recent success on the new Football Foundation PlayZone Framework. Under this framework the Football Foundation are funding the construction of small sided multi use pitches across the country and we have been chosen as the sole provider for all of these facilities within the North East and Yorkshire region. A great achievement. We have also recently formed a partnership with Limonta Sports as the sole UK provider of their hybrid pitch systems; Mixto and Verdimix. This will give CLS Sports an opportunity to further establish ourselves within the elite sports pitch sector. Our first hybrid pitch will be installed at the MFC training ground by the end of the Summer season. Along with this move into the hybrid pitch sector, we also now have an experienced irrigation team providing further diversification alongside our natural turf services. Welcome, Peter McKean and team. Congratulations must go to Andy Barker, who has recently celebrated 40 years at CLS! We would like to thank him for his loyalty and continued, dedicated service over the last 40 years. In recent management meetings it has been noted that some sites have fallen short when it comes to completing the basic requirements on the site tablets to ensure a safe and efficient workplace for all. To reiterate; CLS sites have a minimum standard that we expect to be upheld no matter how big or small the project. Please ensure all the relevant checks are carried out on a daily and weekly basis. We would look forward to what appears to be a very busy end to the year and start of 2024. Fingers crossed for a dry September and October. Thank you all for your effort so far in 2023. From The CLS Board of Directors Acklam Green Centre, Middlesbrough University of Central Lancashire, Preston

Hough End Leisure Centre, Manchester Football Foundation 3G Pitch Construction This double 3G pitch construction project has now been completed and will be handed over to the client in the next few weeks once the final testing has taken place. Here we have transformed the greenfield site, constructing two full size, FIFA approved, 3G pitches with spectator areas, fencing and floodlighting. The synthetic grass has a cork performance infill layer instead of the typical black SBR rubber crumb infill. Cork is a more environmentally friendly option and gives the pitch a more natural look. These pitches are the first cork infilled pitches we have installed and we expect there will be many more to come in the future. Hough End Leisure Centre, Manchester Moortown Golf Club, Leeds Putting Green Replacement In early July we undertook a project at Moortown Golf Club to lift and replace a practice putting green. We firstly removed 50mm of old turf before installing a main drain and a system of lateral drains. We then installed a 250mm layer of stone and a 250mm layer of root zone which were graded to the required levels. We have had great feedback from the head green keeper. Well done to Graeme Elders, Mick Kearney, and Dave Leng from M Womack Plant. Bowbrook Primary School, Shrewsbury Bowbrook Primary School, Shrewsbury Natural Turf Pitch Construction We have now completed the construction phase of this project. Here we have transformed former agricultural and pastureland into natural turf sports pitches for main contractor Bowmer and Kirkland. We will now maintain the pitches until they are fully established and ready for play.

Woodchurch Leisure Centre, Birkenhead Firthmoor Community Centre, Darlington Firthmoor Community Centre, Darlington MUGA Refurbishment We were recently appointed to refurbish this existing macadam MUGA at Firthmoor Community Centre in Darlington. The project firstly started with the removal of the existing lower fencing. This plywood board was replaced with a more durable, robust, untreated marine plywood. An inspiring artist was then appointed to paint the plywood board in a series of co-ordinated patterns. Whilst the painting was being carried out the existing impermeable macadam pitch surface was punctured at regular centres to aid drainage. A key was also cut out to the perimeter of the facility and concrete installed so the new polymeric surface would meet the existing kerb line exactly. The installation of the new polymeric surface was delayed due to the recent wet weather, as the primer which bonds the base mat down to the macadam surface must be installed in dry conditions. Now we have had a dry weather window, we have managed to install the final surface and complete the project. Woodchurch Leisure Centre, Birkenhead Football Foundation 3G Pitch Construction At the end of May we started the construction of this 3G pitch in Birkenhead. The project began with an initial topsoil strip operation before the cut and fill works were carried out. There were then a few wet areas identified. These had to be excavated out and replaced with a capping material. The drainage system was then installed which further aided the wet areas. A key stage inspection of the formation layer was then carried out by Sportslabs. All areas passed the test, which meant work was able to continue. The geotextile layer and aggregate layers have now been installed, along with the majority of the kerb lines. Specialist sub-contractors have also been onsite to progress the floodlighting and fencing installation. The project has continued to progress regardless of the adverse weather we have experienced lately, and we are hopeful to complete the project within programme.

Welland Park Academy, Leicestershire Hockey Pitch Refurbishment This synthetic turf pitch refurbishment project has now been completed and handed back to the client. Here we refurbished an existing sand dressed hockey pitch by removing the existing synthetic turf and shock-pad and installing new. Welland Park Academy, Leicestershire

Star Academy, Salford 3G Pitch and Macadam MUGA Construction We have now completed the construction a 3G pitch and macadam MUGA at Star Academy in Salford. These form part of the new school development being carried out by main contractor Wates Construction. Star Academy, Salford Brecon Athletics Track, Powys Brecon Athletics Track, Powys Athletics Track Refurbishment Under specialist consultants Labosport, we secured this project to refurbish the existing athletics track at Brecon Leisure Centre for Powys Council in Wales. The existing track surface was very worn in places, with the black rubber base mat showing through the red surface. There were also splits and cracks around the track circuit. To bring the track back to the UKA standards required we will; thoroughly clean the surface and drainage system, carry out remedial work to the existing base mat and install a new textured spray surfacing. Once the surfacing has cured, we will then re-install the line markings.

St. Peter’s Playing Fields, Wallsend Football Foundation 3G Pitch Construction We have recently started this full size 3G pitch construction project at Wallsend on the St. Peter’s Playing Field. Here we are constructing a full sized FIFA compliant 3G pitch for community use. The topsoil strip has currently taken place, but further progress has been halted by the wet weather. Unfortunately, vandalism has also occurred on site within the first week and several machines have been damaged. Site perimeter checks and security will be an important consideration for all working on this site. Chase Town FC, Staffordshire Football Foundation 3G Pitch Construction This new stadia 3G pitch construction for Chase Town Football Club started in early July and is progressing well. Here we are converting their current natural turf pitch into a full-sized 3G pitch. This has initially involved the removal of the existing topsoil and earthworks to create the correct levels for the formation. As the site had soft ground conditions and potential coal seams, we have also stabilised the area with our cement stabilising machine to ensure a suitable base for the pitch construction. A full new drainage system, stone base, kerbs, macadam layer and shock-pad will then be installed before the new Lano 3G synthetic turf system with reduced rubber infill is laid. Chase Town FC, Staffordshire

University of Central Lancashire, Preston Athletics Track Refurbishment In July we completed this athletic track refurbishment project for The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). The project involved the removal of the existing track surfacing, replacement of the existing track kerbs, installation of a new track system and new LED floodlight infrastructure. University of Central Lancashire, Preston Kempston Rovers FC, Bedford Football Foundation 3G Pitch Refurbishment and MUGA Construction We began this Football Foundation funded project back in the beginning of April and it has now been completed and handed over to the client. The project involved the refurbishment of an existing 3G pitch, which had a dynamic stone base, and the construction of a new 3G MUGA area with fencing and LED floodlighting. Kempston Rovers FC, Bedford

Clee Fields, Grimsby Football Foundation 3G Pitch Constructions In July we started the construction of this double 3G pitch project in Grimsby under the Football Foundation AGP Framework. The CLS Commercial Department and design specialists, Surfacing Standards Limited (SSL), firstly worked on the design and obtained planning permission so the project could commence. When starting the project we had to demolish the existing hockey pitch and all of the synthetic turf waste materials were taken off site for specialist recycling. We then began constructing the bases for the two pitches. One of which will be to FIFA standards and one to World Rugby standards. Due to the recent wet weather the earthworks had been put on hold, however we are now back up and running and hope to carry out the cement stabilising works shortly. We will then carry out all of the drainage installation and civil engineering aspects of this project inhouse. New floodlighting, fencing and Lano 3G surfaces will then be installed to complete the project. Brynmawr Athletics Track, Blaenau Gwent, Brynmawr Athletics Track, Blaenau Gwent, Athletics Track Refurbishment After a competitive tender process, we secured this athletics track refurbishment project for the County Borough of Blaenau Gwent in Wales. David Fearn and his team started this project back in July. It involves a thorough clean of the existing surface and drainage system, before the new porous, Conica, Conipur SP system is installed. This is a 3mm PUR spray coating that will complement the existing polyurethane track system and bring it up to World Athletics standards. Once the system is installed by specialist subcontractors, the track linings will then be reinstalled. Clee Fields, Grimsby

Woodbourn Road Test Hub, Sheffield Football Foundation 3G Pitch Constructions In June, we started this exciting project for the Football Foundation which involves the construction of one 7v7 3G pitch and six 5v5 3G pitches to the macadam base level. All other providers on the Football Foundation Artificial Grass Pitch Framework will then install their own non-rubber infill 3G systems. This project has been commissioned by the Football Foundation to enable a comparison of all the top synthetic turf suppliers’ alternative solutions to SBR rubber infill. CLS will be installing the Lano TLT Star 50 system with a Geo Fill which is made from birch tree. Work is progressing well on site. We are currently installing the macadam layer. The lighting columns and ductwork are fully installed and the fencing installation is also progressing well. Woodbourn Road Test Hub, Sheffield Lutterworth Athletic FC, Leicestershire Football Foundation 3G Pitch Construction This 3G stadia pitch construction at Lutterworth Athletic FC is now almost complete and will soon be ready to handover to the client in early September. Here we have installed a full-sized 3G pitch to FIFA standards with white spectator fencing and floodlighting. Lutterworth Athletic FC, Leicestershire Stokesley Leisure Centre, North Yorkshire Synthetic Turf Pitch Refurbishment At the beginning of August we started this small synthetic turf pitch refurbishment project for Stokesley Leisure Centre, which is located within the Stokesley Secondary School grounds. The project involves the removal of the old synthetic surface which was very well worn and had a number of defective areas. This will then be transported to a specialist recycling facility where the infill and turf will be separated and recycled. We then installed a new synthetic 3G turf and the associated infill to complete the project ahead of the new school year.

Middlesbrough FC Training Ground, Darlington Natural Turf Pitch Renovations Our three phases of end of season renovations at the Middlesbrough FC training ground are now complete. In the third phase of work we renovated pitches 3 and 4. This started by ‘koroing’ off the top 25mm of the surface before a lateral drainage system at 5m centres and a main drain were installed. We then installed a secondary drainage system of sand slits at 750mm centres plus a full irrigation system. A 25mm layer of sand was then installed and ameliorated, before another 25mm was added and levelled with a tractor and grader bar. A final 100mm layer of root zone was then installed and levelled ready for seeding which was carried out in four directions. Well done to everyone for their hard work on this project. Middlesbrough FC Training Ground, Darlington John Leggott College, Scunthorpe Football Foundation 3G Pitch Construction In July we started the construction of this community 3G pitch to FIFA quality standards under the Football Foundation Artificial Grass Pitch Framework. The earthworks operation has now been completed and specialist sub-contractors are carrying out all of the civil engineering work. Along with the pitch we will also install sports fencing, sports equipment, maintenance equipment, hard standing areas for storage and spectator areas. John Leggott College, Scunthorpe

Ralph Thorsby School, Leeds Ralph Thoresby School, Leeds Synthetic Turf Hockey Pitch Refurbishment We have recently started this synthetic turf pitch refurbishment project for our repeat client, Ayre Valley Ground Maintenance. The project involves the removal of the old synthetic turf and shockpad, the installation of a new drainage system, a new shock-pad and a new sand dressed synthetic turf. This project is being delivered by one of our approved sub-contractors and managed by Adrian Swain. We are currently cutting out the existing tarmac and installing the new drains. These drain runs will then be surfaced in a porous macadam to the same levels and line as the existing surface. The new shock-pad and turf system will then be installed. The Acklam Green Centre, Middlesbrough 3G Synthetic Pitch Refurbishment In August we started this refurbishment of an existing synthetic turf pitch at The Acklam Green Centre in Middlesbrough. The current pitch was approaching 16 years of age and showing a lot of signs of wear. The project involved the removal of the old surface and installation of a new 3G system with line markings for full sized, 9v9, 7v7 and 5v5 games, making it a multi-use facility to FIFA standards. Along with the surfacing we also refurbished the existing floodlighting by re-heading the existing columns. Acklam Green Centre, Middlesbrough

Trinity Catholic College, Middlesbrough Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Leeds Football Foundation 3G Pitch Construction This Football Foundation funded 3G pitch construction has recently been completed and handed over to the client. After a slow start due to the wet weather encountered within March, the project picked up pace and progressed well. Here we have constructed a World Rugby and FIFA compliant 3G pitch with floodlighting, fencing and spectator areas. There were also several other considerations which had to be accounted for during the design and construction phase. Close neighbouring properties meant our floodlighting design was adapted to ensure light spill was kept to a minimum. There were also many ecological constraints due to the presence of wildlife on the existing site. To mitigate these issues, we installed a wildlife pond, bat boxes, swift boxes and a wildflower area. We will return to site in the winter within planting season to plant a tree orchard and hedging. Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Leeds Trinity Catholic College, Middlesbrough Sports Fencing and Stand Construction Further to the installation of the new 3G pitch at Trinity Catholic College, we were appointed to install a new fencing system and stand to ensure the pitch met the current FA ground grading. This is because it will be used by Boro Rangers as their home ground, who are in the Northern League Division One, so certain criteria must be met to enable them to play their home matches here. There was a delay on the stand delivery, but this has now been installed.

The River Leven, Stokesley Footpath Installation This project, which involved the installation of a SUDs compliant riverside footpath in Stokesley, has now been completed and is being enjoyed by members of the public. The project involved the installation of new resin bound paths, paved bench areas, knee rail fencing and river bank vegetated wall system repairs. On Friday 25th August the new footpath was officially opened by our Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. He was very complementary of our work, describing how much the new footpath has meant to the local community. He told the crowd ‘You should feel really proud of what you have all done as a community, it is special place to live, and a special community and you have made it even more special with your efforts so thank you from me’. The River Leven, Stokesley

The Lady Chapel, Osmotherley Hard Landscaping The Landscape and Earthworks Team have recently been working at The Lady Chapel in Osmotherley where they have refurbished an outdoor sanctuary. The chapel is located on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and has panoramic views over Teesside, Bilsdale and, on a clear day, as far as the Pennine hills. Built by Carthusian monks from nearby Mount Grace Priory in the 15th century. Until recently it was cared for, on behalf of the Diocese of Middlesbrough, by Benedictine monks from Ampleforth Abbey. It is now however, under the pastoral care of St Mary’s Cathedral, Middlesbrough who contacted us to undertake the project. The project firstly involved the removal of some existing paving, before the installation of a new sandstone pathway and paved area. We then also reinstalled an ancient sandstone alter. Various Beyond Housing Sites, Redcar & Cleveland Wildflower Seeding At the start of the Summer, we prepared and seeded a number of wildflower areas around various Beyond Housing sites in Redcar. These have now grown in and are looking great, with lots of different varieties. Various Beyond Housing Sites, Redcar & Cleveland The Lady Chapel, Osmotherley

Travel Like You Know Them Did you know that The Highway Code changed to improve road safety for people walking, cycling or horse riding? A hierarchy was established, with these most vulnerable of road users now given more protection. The key changes to the Highway Code guidance include: • Giving priority at junctions to people cycling straight ahead and people waiting to cross or already crossing the road. • Passing horse riders at under 10mph and allowing at least 2 metres of space. • Keeping to a low speed when passing people walking on the road. • Leaving at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds. Remember that people cycling may ride 2 abreast or in the centre of the lane if it is safer to do so, pulling in when safe to allow vehicles to overtake. People don’t see pedestrians, cyclist or horse riders on the roads as easily they see bikes, lorries and cars. But inside or on every one of them is a person – it could be your brother, your mum, or your mate. 'Travel like you know them’ aims to help all road users better understand each other and encourage positive behaviours to ultimately build a more positive and mutually considerate experience that is safer for everyone. Welsh Speed Limit Change New legislation from the Welsh Government means that the default national speed limit will fall from 30mph to 20mph on restricted roads. The legislation will come into force across Wales on 17th September 2023. From that date, the maximum speed you can legally travel on restricted roads will be 20mph. Restricted roads are classed as 'roads with streetlights spaced no more than 200 yards apart, usually located in residential and built-up areas'. Welsh Speed Limit Change

Toolbox Talks Toolbox talks take a small amount of time to carry out and help provide a safer working environment. They allow you to explore the risks of specific health and safety issues on site and think about ways to deal with them. The series of toolbox talks below should be carried out over the next month: • TBT040 - Buried Services • TBT061 - Operated Plant Access & Egress • TBT054 - Waste Management • TBT042 - Drugs • TBT053 - Emergency Spill Control • TBT050 - Visitors • TBT045 – Portable Electrical Tool PRE START CHECKS Toolbox talks should be carried out by all employees at all levels not just supervisory or management staff. Records of all toolbox talks should be done on the site pads using the online form. Onsite and remote checks will be carried out and a failure to carry out these toolbox talks will be seen as a failure to carry out health and safety instructions. If you need guidance or assistance, please contact Jason Smithies. Health and Safety Keep Safety Your Top Priority We all know what is expected of us on a daily basis, however we should not get complacent where safety is concerned. It is essential that all of us continue to carry out the established procedures below: • Carry out and RECORD daily vehicle and plant checks. • Report all defects. • Do not operate plant and equipment unless you are trained and competent. • When working on site ensure you are aware of and follow the method statements, risk assessments and COSHH paperwork relating to the work you are undertaking. • Ensure that sites are maintained in a clean and tidy condition. • Report all accidents, near misses and potential hazards to your supervisor. • Always wear the correct protective clothing. • Always record the use of any portable powered hand tool on your timesheet. It is worth remembering that the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) may prosecute both employers and employees, dependant on the circumstances of an incident where an injury occurs. Whilst carrying out unscheduled audits on sites over the Summer it was evident that the majority of you are carrying out the above. However, some sites are still falling short on completing the basic requirements. We must ALL carry out the checks and records that are requested of you on the forms given. If in doubt, please ask for help. Drug and Alcohol Tests at Work We have once again started to undertake random drug and alcohol tests on all sites including the Park Farm Head Office. The use of illegal drugs is unacceptable. The incapacity for work or poor performance at work due to the influence of alcohol, the possession or the taking of intoxicants or illegal drugs would be viewed as instances of gross misconduct. In these instances, you will be liable to summary dismissal (ie dismissal without notice). You don't have to be on illegal drugs to be impaired to drive or carry out other tasks at work. Prescription or over-the-counter medicines can also impair your ability to drive. If you’re taking medicines, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or healthcare professional before driving or operating any machinery. Please carry the drug instruction leaflet with you for any medication you may be taking. Prior to undertaking a company drugs and alcohol test all employees will be asked if they are taking medication of any kind. If you are on medication, please ensure that you inform the tester before the test is carried out.

Health and Safety Safety Rules On Site To avoid injuries, accidents, and other health problems on our construction sites below are general construction safety rules that should be followed to keep yourselves and visitors safe: 1. Always wear PPE: All workers and visitors on the construction site should wear the required PPE to reduce exposure to various hazards on the worksite. This PPE could include goggles, helmets, gloves, ear muffs or plugs, boots, and high visibility vests and suits. 2. Be mindful and follow signs: Safety signs allow management to warn and raise health and safety awareness for employees and visitors. Signs will be appropriately placed around the site where necessary. You should all be familiar with the construction site safety tips and different signs: prohibition signs, mandatory signs, warning signs, safe condition signs, and firefighting equipment signs. If you are unsure, please speak up and ask a supervisor. 3. Follow the clear instructions given at induction: The site inductions given on each contract enable all new workers/visitors to familiarise themselves with site operations. Toolbox talks are also an effective way of relaying health and safety instructions, and these will be given at regular intervals on all contracts. 4. Keep the site tidy: Ensure that debris, tools, loose materials, and stagnant water from excavations and backfilling are not just lying around the site. All sites must be cleaned daily and remain clutter-free to prevent slips and trips. (see TBT054 - Waste Management.) 5. Organise and store tools properly: Ensure that no tools are lying around and leave lights and power tools unplugged when not in use. Following site specific storage rules this will help prevent tools from getting damaged or even causing injury to workers or visitors. 6. Use the right equipment for the right task: Often, accidents occur due to the misuse of a tool, plant or equipment. Avoid using makeshift tools, instead, only ever use the correct tool to get the job done quickly and safely 7. Be aware of the site emergency response plan: The site emergency response plan details what you should do when emergencies like, fire, hazardous material spills, or other types of incidents occur. This will be given to you at induction, if you don’t understand it please speak up. 8. Set up safeguards and maintain them: One of the ways to ensure safety on site is by placing engineering controls such as barriers, fences, and trench covers or guards around hazards. These will help separate people from areas with excavations, open water, high-voltage electricity etc. Please ensure that you always maintain all physical barriers on site never remove them without prior authorisation from the Site Manager. 9. Carry out pre-checks on tools and equipment: Remember it’s not just vehicles and plant that require pre-start checks before commencing work. You should ensure that tools and equipment to be used are free of defects or damage. (see TBT045 Portable Electrical Tool - Pre Start Checks) 10. Report issues immediately: Please report defects and near misses on site as soon as you notice them. Problems can only be solved when we are made aware. The sooner issues get reported, the fewer chances of them worsening and causing an accident. We are ALL here to look out for hazards in the workplace around us. Between us all we can help prevent accidents occurring on CLS sites.
