CLS NEWS
Cleveland Land Services (Guisborough) Ltd. Spring 2022
Over the past few months, I am sure you will agree, we have been working at full capacity on all fronts.
From our onsite teams, to our workshop and everyone in between. We are well and truly back to our pre-
Covid workload.
Our natural turf pitch teams have been very busy over the last couple of months as the weather has
improved. They have been delivering various renovations and full build projects for main contractors,
councils and private clubs alike. Synthetic sports pitch projects have continued to form the majority of our
workload, with 3G Football Foundation pitches, FIH accredited hockey pitch refurbishments, athletics
facilities and small multi-use games areas all being carried out in this quarter. We are continuing to
expand our approved sub-contractor data base to enable us to deliver the increasing amount of work we
are securing. We have delivered several projects on a fully sub-contracted basis and thanks must go to
our Contract Managers who have co-ordinated and delivered these projects.
CLS Landscape and Earthworks have been working on civil engineering projects in Middlesbrough Town
Centre and Angrove Country Park. Our local maintenance contracts also continue to be delivered by Alan
and his team.
In recent safety audits it has been great to hear most of you are wearing the correct task specific PPE. It
seems you are also all getting to grips with the new online site files on the tablets and the required checks
are on the whole being carried out. Well done to all.
Looking to the future, we have further invested in the CLS Selfdrive hire fleet, adding ten New Holland
tractors, two Wacker Newson excavators and a soil stabilisation machine, silo and large tractor. We have
significantly increased our external hires compared to the past couple of years which is great news after
the disruption caused by Covid.
Over the past few months we have secured a large number of sports pitch projects and are now fully
booked until the Autumn. The Commercial Team are now securing both private and public contracts for
the latter part of the year and into next year which is putting the company in a very healthy position moving
forward.
I must thank you all for your hard work over the last couple of months during this busy period, it does not
go unnoticed. Here’s to a busy Summer…

Football Foundation 3G Pitch Construction
This full-sized, FIFA approved 3G pitch construction in Jarrow for South Tyneside Council is progressing

There have been several ecological considerations on this project, one of which was the relocation of a
rare butterfly called the Dingy Skipper. They have grey-brown wings with mottled brown markings and
two rows of small white spots. To protect this rare species, we were required to relocate the existing
vegetation and habitat to ensure the existing butterflies had the best chance of survival. At the start of the
contract, we constructed several butterfly friendly banks and relocated the vegetation.
We then carried out the cut and fill earthworks, drainage installation and stone layer construction. Once
tested, we then installed the macadam layer and sports fencing. We are now constructing an acoustic
fencing barrier to limit noise pollution to the nearby residential housing. To complete the project, we will
now install the synthetic turf system and provide new sports equipment. We are scheduled to hand the
project over in mid-June. Thanks go to all those who have been involved in delivering this project.

A massive 42,000m2 of sub-formation has now been trimmed, along with the reapplication of the topsoil.
We will now install the main drains, inspection chambers and lateral drains.
Once the primary drainage system is complete we will then ameliorate and install Koro top drains to

Natural Turf Sports Pitch Construction
This project, for main contractor Laing O-Rourke
in Sale, Manchester, involved the construction of
a natural turf pitch which had previously been
used by the main contractor as a compound area.
Laing O’Rourke firstly removed the stone sub-
base before we started our schedule of works.
This involved de-compacting the sub formation
using a dozer and ripper attachment.
The area was then trimmed before topsoil was
applied to the new pitch area. The pitch was then
cultivated and ameliorated with sand. A pre-seed
fertiliser was then spread and seed applied in
three directions with a dimple seeder.

involved an initial cut and fill earthworks operation and the formation of bunds with the installation of

turf surfacing were then installed along with floodlighting, and sports fencing to complete the facility.
The project has now been handed over to the client and looks fantastic. The project is a credit to all

also fitted to the existing fencing to reduce the
migration of the rubber infill.

Cycleway Installation
Since March we have been working in Middlesbrough town centre to install a new cycle way on Linthorpe
Road from the Park Road North to Borough Road intersections.
The project has involved the adaptation of the existing footpath, carriage way and bus stops to allow for
the creation of a new cycle lane alongside the existing carriage way. We have removed existing kerbs
and bus stops, installed new kerbs, paving slabs, macadam surfacing and re-profiled existing junctions.
The project is currently around 50% complete. It was originally a 12 week contract but it is now going to
be around 20 weeks as there have been several obstructions, such as unanticipated hard dig and old
tram lines within the working area which have delayed project progress. We have also been given a
series of additional works.

Speeding and Dangerous Driving is not Tolerated
Last month we received a call from a member of the general public. The call was to complain at the
manner in which a company van had dangerously cut in front of them on a slip road. This member of
the public was so shocked that they informed the company that the footage contained on the dash
cam would be sent to us and the police as ‘it was the worst driving they had ever seen’.
May we remind you that you represent the company at all times during working hours. One of the
largest advertisements we have is the company fleet of vehicles. If you are found to drive in a
dangerous way risking your life, that of your colleagues and the public, you will be disciplined and
may be banned from driving company vehicles. Excessive speeding and dangerous driving will not
be tolerated.
Health and Safety
Health and Safety Management PPE
Thankfully it looks like the good weather is returning, and
we can get down to a busy working period again. Please
all still keep health and safety at the forefront of your
thoughts. All of you who use plant and machinery have
daily checks to carry out and record, either on paper or
through the site tablets. If there are any issues with plant
and machinery these MUST be raised with the workshop
as instructed on the paperwork or through the online form.
As the sun lifts its head above the clouds some of you may
be tempted to wear sleeveless clothing or shorts. This is
NOT allowed, CLS clothing is given to you as protective
work wear. If any of your clothing is ripped or damaged it
may contribute to you having an accident. Please report
any damaged clothing or PPE to your supervisor.
Please ensure that you are wearing the correct PPE for
the task in hand including, but not limited to:
• Hi-vis clothing
• Company uniform (in good order with no rips)
• Head protection
• Protective footwear
• Eye protection (the correct type for the task)
• Ear defenders or plugs (the correct type for the task)
• Gloves (the correct type for the task)
Please remember you are all health and safety
monitors. Keeping safe is a responsibility for us all.
If you notice something happening that is not safe
please speak out.
Please protect yourself, fellow workers and members
of the public.
Drug and Alcohol Tests at Work
We will once again be undertaking random drug and alcohol tests on all sites, including the Park
Farm Head Office. The use of illegal drugs is unacceptable. The incapacity for work or poor
performance at work due to the influence of alcohol, the possession or the taking of intoxicants or
illegal drugs is viewed as gross misconduct. In these instances you will be liable to summary
dismissal (ie dismissal without notice).
You don't have to be on illegal drugs to be impaired to drive or carry out other tasks at work.
Prescription or over-the-counter medicines can also impair your ability to drive. If you’re taking
medicines, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or a healthcare professional before driving or operating
any machinery. Please carry the drug instruction leaflet for any medication you may be taking. Prior
to undertaking a company drugs and alcohol test all employees will be asked if they are taking
medication of any kind. If you are on medication please ensure that you inform the tester before the
test is carried out.
Health and Safety
Health and Safety Essentials and the H.S.E.
We all know what is expected of us on a daily basis however we should not get complacent where safety
is concerned. It is essential that all of us continue to carry out the established procedures in the following
areas:
• Carry out and RECORD daily vehicle and plant checks.
• Report all defects.
• Do not operate plant and equipment unless you are trained and competent.
• When working on all sites ensure you are aware of and follow the method statements, risk
assessments and COSHH paperwork relating to the work you are undertaking.
• Ensure that sites are maintained in a clean and tidy condition.
• Report all accidents, near misses and potential hazards to your supervisor.
• Always wear the correct protective clothing.
• Always record the use of any portable powered hand tool on your timesheet.
In the last month we have had an unscheduled inspection at Park Farm from the HSE. The two inspectors
looked over our records including site safety paperwork, risk assessments, COSHH assessments and
plant check sheets to name but a few. CLS was able to demonstrate that we have processes in place to
keep all who work for CLS and all of whom we come into contact with safe. We must continue to keep up
the good work by carrying out all the required checks and recording all that is requested off you on the
forms given. If in doubt, please ask for help.
It is worth remembering that the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) may not only prosecute employers,
but employees may also be subject to prosecution dependant on the circumstances of any incident where
an injury occurs.
Toolbox Talks Toolbox Talks
Toolbox talks take a small amount of time to carry out and
can definitely help provide a safer working environment.
The series of toolbox talks below should be carried out over
the next month:
• TBT040 – Buried Services
• TBT058 – Weil’s Disease
• TBT052 – Environmental Nuisance
• TBT060 – Trailers and Implements
• TBT054 – Waste Management
• TBT061 – Operated Plant – Safe Access & Egress
Toolbox talks should be carried out by all employees at all
levels not just supervisory or management staff. Records
of all toolbox talks must be handed to your supervisor/
manager (they have all the paperwork you need) or record
using the app on the site pads.

New Uniform Policy
It is important that all employees maintain a professional standard of dress and wear the correct
company uniform. We are therefore introducing a Uniform Fair Usage Policy for all site based and
workshop employees.
The policy has been created using feedback from employees and will ensure all site and workshop
based employees get a fair amount of uniform per year to ensure a professional and smart image.
The policy will set out what your yearly entitlement is, and how to order new uniform online.
There will no longer be any stock held at Park Farm. All stock will be ordered in
specifically to your requirements and there will be a 10 day turnaround time.
A copy of the new policy and full details of how to order will be circulated to all managers this week
and a toolbox talk will be carried out to ensure all employees receive instructions of the new system.
