2022 Autumn - Winter Newsletter

CLS Autumn-Winter Newsletter 2022

CLS NEWS

Cleveland Land Services (Guisborough) Ltd. Autumn - Winter 2022

We have had a diverse year, delivering a variety of projects across all divisions. CLS Landscape and
Earthworks have continued to deliver holiday park constructions, cementing our services within this
sector. The CLS Sports team have built a record number of synthetic turf pitches and have finally seen all
the design and planning work we have carried out on Football Foundation projects come to fruition. The
natural turf teams have also delivered a large schedule of work, taking advantage of the favourable
weather of this year’s summer season. CLS Selfdrive have further expanded and renewed some of their
fleet and are continuing to meet their pre-covid levels.

This year we have successfully implemented new digital systems on our sites and within the workshop.
Thank you to everyone who has adopted this new way of working. We plan to implement more online
systems and improvements in the coming year, therefore your continued input and feedback is greatly
appreciated.

After the implementation of our new uniform policy this year, it is also great to see the majority of you
looking smart and professional by always wearing company uniform.

Looking forward to 2023, the early signs are starting to look positive. We have a number of synthetic turf
pitch constructions already booked in and a couple of large projects still to complete. We will be installing
two cork filled synthetic turf pitches in Manchester, which will be some of the first of their kind within the
UK. This will be an important reference site for us in the coming years as rubber infill looks set to be
phased out.

Despite the booked work, there will still be challenges as we navigate the continued material price
volatility, the economic uncertainty predicted for 2023 and the competitive nature of our industry. We must
continue to build on our reputation for high quality work and remain innovative and efficient. With your
continued and valued support, we hope to minimise the impact of these challenges.

Thank you once again for all the hard work you have delivered in 2022. Without all elements of the
business working together, this year would not have been possible. Now it is time for a well-earned break.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Synthetic Turf Pitch Refurbishment

We have recently finished this synthetic turf pitch
refurbishment project for Trinity Catholic College in
Middlesbrough. The project involved an extension
of the existing pitch to ensure the new facility could
accommodate a full sized football pitch and the
required run-offs to meet the FA guidelines.

The existing sand dressed surface and shock-pad
were firstly removed, along with the fencing and
floodlighting to the North and East sides. These
sides were then extended by 6m before new
fencing was installed and the lighting columns
were moved.

The new 3G surface with full sized pitch markings

was then installed to complete the facility. Thanks Trinity Catholic College, Middlesbrough

Hard and Soft Landscaping, Woodland
Management and Planting

This project for Hambleton District Council, which will
transform the existing open public area and section of

agricultural land near the leisure centre into a
recreational area, is progressing well.

So far, we have regraded the agricultural land into the
correct formation for the sports pitches, installed new
footpaths and cycle tracks around the open area and
in and out of the nearby woodland and constructed a
new car park.

We are now currently preparing the base for a
coloured macadam running track which will be
installed in the coming weeks.

In the new year we will connect the new car park to the

existing highway and once the weather improves, we
will return to the natural turf pitch works.

Under David Gallagher’s supervision the project is Northallerton Environmental Enhancement Project
running well. A big thank you to all the workers
involved on this scheme who have worked through the
recent wet and cold conditions.

Hire Highlights

• Cundall Manor School near Thirsk once
again hired end of season pitch renovation
equipment. Our Vredo 214.75 seed drill and
Unirake were just a couple of items they
used to renovate their cricket pitches. The
school was founded by Lt. Col. Dr Harry
Beckhough after the second world war and
has now evolved into one of the North’s
leading co-educational independent schools,
offering superb sporting facilities.

• Vulcan Contractors hired our Cat D5K to
work on a drainage project at Ascot
Racecourse. This is the third time in the last
4 years they have chosen CLS Selfdrive to
supply equipment on the course, which first
opened in 1711.

• Sembcorp have hired an Iseki TH5420 with
a 3 point linkage mounted gritter to keep the
roads and footpaths safe on their Wilton site.

• Our Imants Shockwave 155 and Imants
Sandcat have been very busy over the last
couple of months, with Kirkbymoorside Golf
Club, Ripon Racecourse, High Gosforth
Park Golf Club and Wetherby Golf Club all
hiring the equipment.

• Phillips 66 Refinery in Immingham again
hired 2 tractors, 2 gritters and a snow plough
to carry out their winter maintenance. The
Humber Refinery was built in 1966 and has
a crude oil processing plant which supplies
24% of UK fuels. The refinery is also
leading the way in low carbon fuel
production and was the first in the UK to
produce fuel, at scale, from used cooking oil.

• Trailers, forklifts and tractors have been in
high demand around the UK and we have
secured many new contracts.

• Altrad are currently trialling a Manitou M26-4
forklift with two tube & fit racked trailers at
Ineos Inovyn, Runcorn. It’s hoped a
successful trial will lead to further hires, as
the site looks to move away from the use of
wagons to move scaffolding around the site.

Health and Safety

Safety Rules On Site

To avoid injuries, accidents, and other health problems on our construction sites below are general
construction safety rules that should be followed to keep yourselves and visitors safe:

1. Always wear PPE: All workers and visitors on the construction site should wear the required PPE to
reduce exposure to various hazards on the worksite. This PPE could include goggles, helmets, gloves,
ear muffs or plugs, boots, and high visibility vests and suits.

2. Be mindful and follow signs: Safety signs allow management to warn and raise health and safety
awareness for employees and visitors. Signs will be appropriately placed around the site where
necessary. You should all be familiar with the construction site safety tips and different signs: prohibition
signs, mandatory signs, warning signs, safe condition signs, and firefighting equipment signs. If you are
unsure, please speak up and ask a supervisor.

3. Follow the clear instructions given at induction: The site inductions given on each contract enable
all new workers/visitors to familiarise themselves with site operations. Toolbox talks are also an effective
way of relaying health and safety instructions, and these will be given at regular intervals on all contracts.

4. Keep the site tidy: Ensure that debris, tools, loose materials, and stagnant water from excavations and
backfilling are not just lying around the site. All sites must be cleaned daily and remain clutter-free to
prevent slips and trips. (see TBT054 - Waste Management.)

5. Organise and store tools properly: Ensure that no tools are lying around and leave lights and power
tools unplugged when not in use. Following site specific storage rules this will help prevent tools from
getting damaged or even causing injury to workers or visitors.

6. Use the right equipment for the right task: Often, accidents occur due to the misuse of a tool, plant
or equipment. Avoid using makeshift tools, instead, only ever use the correct tool to get the job done
quickly and safely

7. Be aware of the site emergency response plan: The site emergency response plan details what you
should do when emergencies like, fire, hazardous material spills, or other types of incidents occur. This
will be given to you at induction, if you don’t understand it please speak up.

8. Set up safeguards and maintain them: One of the ways to ensure safety on site is by placing
engineering controls such as barriers, fences, and trench covers or guards around hazards. These will
help separate people from areas with excavations, open water, high-voltage electricity etc. Please ensure
that you always maintain all physical barriers on site never remove them without prior authorisation from
the Site Manager.

9. Carry out pre-checks on tools and equipment: Remember it’s not just vehicles and plant that require
pre-start checks before commencing work. You should ensure that tools and equipment to be used are
free of defects or damage. (see TBT045 Portable Electrical Tool - Pre Start Checks)

10. Report issues immediately: Please report defects and near misses on site as soon as you notice
them. Problems can only be solved when we are made aware. The sooner issues get reported, the fewer
chances of them worsening and causing an accident. We are ALL here to look out for hazards in the
workplace around us. Between us all we can help prevent accidents occurring on CLS sites.
