100 Word Story
Broken Bones
When I was about 4 years old, I was upstairs playing. I was playing with this kind
of silly putty or playdoh. My brother was 6 years old at the time. He really wanted to play
so he came out of his room. He decided he wanted to play with the putty, but I wouldn’t
let him. He kept fighting with me until something happened. He wouldn’t stop. He
wanted it so bad and was fighting with me constantly that soon I started to burst into
tears. My mom came rushing up the stars and immediately rushed me to the emergency
room. We went to the doctor’s and found out that my brother had broken my collarbone.
After the event happened, my brother got sent to his room for a while and couldn’t play.

Courage
When I was a kid, growing up, I always went to Houston to see my grandma.
When I say always I mean mostly twice a year. My grandma was a very important part
of my life. She wasn’t healthy at all. My dad was only raised by his mom and no dad. My
grandma was the most special person I know and still is. She never, ever wanted to
give up. She wouldn’t stop until it was her best effort to do anything. Through the
toughest times she wouldn’t stop; never giving up. She inspired many people she knew
to never stop trying. She inspired my whole family. She always had this beautiful smile
and sympathy. When I am on the court, I always think to myself that my grandma
would've wanted me to be the best I could even when a bad play is made.

● .The state fish of Hawaii is the humuhumunukunukuapua’a, also known as the
reef triggerfish. Also, that’s one of the longest words in the Hawaiian language.
● The Hawaiian alphabet has only 12 letters, the five vowels and 7 other
consonants: H, K, L, M, N, P and W. It also has a symbol called ‘okina (‘), which
begins with an okina. Also, every word in the Hawaiian language ends with one
of five vowels.
● Hawaii was originally called the Sandwich Isles.

Medical Issue
Concussions
Today, concussions are a big concern when sport activities are taking place.
Many people are concerned about how to solve the problem of the incident happening.
According to Mayo Clinic a concussion occurs from a mild blow to the head, either with
or without loss of consciousness and can lead to temporary cognitive symptoms.
Symptoms may include a headache, confusion, memory loss, nausea, vomiting,
dizziness, the feel of ringing in the ears and sleepiness. There are different studies, but
most of them say that there is no specific cure for a concussion. Sleeping and resting
help to recover from a concussion. This means that the person with the concussion
should temporarily reduce sports, video games, TV or socializing.
Different people experience different symptoms and some people
experience: blackout to the whole body or poor balance.
As well as sleeping can help, sometimes it might not be the best idea. Sleeping while
having a concussion can also lead to sleep problems such as waking up every one and
a while frequently. Some mild depression could also occur. Not everyone can suffer by
concussions. Some people just get a small concussion while others get large ones. It
depends on the event that happened. Most football players, get concussions because of
how dangerous the play that is taking place ends. Football players tend to get really bad
injuries because of all the tackling, hitting heads and bodies, and pushing. The helmets
these days aren't as secure and citizens hope to find a way soon enough to help.
Researchers at UCLA are trying to make a new design to decrease the
injury of concussions. They are working on an energy absorbing material called
Architected Lattice. This would replace the foam inside the football helmets and absorb
not all, but some of the energy from the strong impacts. This lattice has been shown to
reduce impact force by 26 percent compared to the conventional foam now used in
football helmets, said Larry Carlson, director of advanced materials at the UCLA Henry
Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science and part of the team developing
6
this lattice. Another idea is having a spring-like arterial in the inside of the helmet which
moves the inside and protects the impact from the outside by moving independently.
The United States Army Research Lab has been saying that the movement of a
player's’ flexible neck is a con. The research lab also suggest that a protective strap
could work. The straps would attach from a player's waist and torso to the bottom of the
player's helmet and act like a shock absorber, because the fluid becomes strongly solid
when impact is contacted.
The image shown below is all of the ages that are affected by concussions.

Technology
Google Glass
Google is making this new technology called Google Glass. With this being in the
process of building or functioning Google says that anyone with Google Glass can see texts,
maps, directions, calls, and being able to navigate while seeing it on the ground. Google Glass
is put onto this little headband material. Having the headband material, anyone who puts it on,
instead of looking around for what someone needs, it will tell that person where to go without
looking around.
Another way Google is going to make Google Glass, is when someone sets their phone
down and it pops up. When the person sets their phone down anywhere by a table, it will
basically spread out across the table and then the person can touch the table just like any
iphone would do. Currently, this device is only available to some developers with $1,500 but
other companies are trying to make it more affordable for more to buy. This technology is
basically a iphone hands free in front of your face.
In 2012, Google Glass was a big wow. Many people wanted it so Google kept increasing
the cost. Soon, it started to go downhill. In 2013, many others didn’t like the idea of the head
piece material because others thought they were being filmed or being caught on camera
without permission. Nobody wants to be getting “stalked” or caught on camera for no reason. So
Google decided to stop selling the first product in January 2015. Since that has happened,
Google said that they are going to make the product into good use now. There are many pros
8
and cons about the new idea happening. Some pros are that it’s a comfortable design, the
headpiece is hands free and also with the pictures, navigation is real and not fake, meaning that
it will actually tell someone where to go, and the last pro is that it will startup a good
conversation. Some cons consists of outrageously expensive, the battery can go down really
fast and doesn’t last that long, need good lighting for photos, and there is a limited number of
apps that can get downloaded.
Google says that it is easier for them to say "yes" to the glass now that it's been
upgraded with more memory and new apps. The Google Glass app list has officially more than
50 apps and the notifications pop right in front of the person’s eye. Even though Google has
changed the Google Glass “perspective” a little than what it used to be, some citizens don’t
really know if it’s worth it. There was a parent at Disneyland, and so many questions were
raised. Lots of people wanted to know more and what the whole purpose was. Some questions
are unanswerable. So the question is: is it worth it or not?

Recipe
Gumbo
Ingredients:
● 50 pods of fresh okra, chopped
● 2 tablespoons cooking oil
● 1 3-4 pound chicken, cut up
● Meat of 1 ham bone
Or 1 pound ham, chopped
● 1 no. 2 can tomatoes
● 1 large onion, diced
● 3 sprigs parsley, chopped
● 3 quarts boiling water
Salt to taste
Red pepper to taste
● 1 bay leaf
Directions:
Wash, stem and cut okra into ½ inch pieces. Fry until brown, being careful not to
scorch. Season with salt and pepper. Do this with a little grease as possible. Put
cooking oil into deep pot. When hot, add chicken and ham. Cover and let simmer about
10 minutes. Chop tomatoes fine and save juice. Add the onion, parsley, and tomatoes
to the cooking meat mixture, stirring frequently. Next add fried okra and juice of the
tomatoes. Immediately add bay leaf and water which has been boiling. Let simmer for
about an hour. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot over boiled rice. Makes about 4
quarters.
Why I chose this recipe:
I decided to choose my grandma’s Gumbo recipe from Louisiana. This has been
a family homemade recipe for years and has been passed down from generations. It is
really good and my family really enjoys it. This recipe is good for anyone who likes rice,
a soup-like dish, and chicken or ham. This Gumbo recipe is something my grandma
makes every once and awhile my family goes and visits. I suggest making this dish
because it has a variety of protein and delicious foods. If someone decides on making
the dish, they don’t have to add the okra, because personally I don’t like it myself, and
my grandma only puts it in sometimes.

Lighting Storm
I decided to do a photo on lightning. One day when I was coming home from
volleyball practice, there was a storm happening. For a few years, I have always been
really interested in photography and artsy photos. Whether its nature, normal life, or
events, I always love to take pictures. Since it was lighting outside, I was thinking to
myself that it would be pretty cool if I took a photo of lighting. So that’s exactly what I
did. I held my phone on the dashboard of the car, and what I did was keep pressing the
button to take a photo until I got a lighting bolt. What I was thinking was that It probably
wouldn't happen because it didn’t come to mind how many photos I took. As soon as I
thought I had taken a decent photo, I stopped. I looked at my photos and it had
appeared that I had taken 362 photos. All of them were bad until I saw two of them. I
had actually taken a really good lighting photo. The picture is 110% taken by myself.

Discrimination
Citizens Today
Discrimination means changing something in a different way such as a bad way.
Discrimination is the quality of being powerful towards something. It means to
distinguish or single out. In our everyday life people tend to do one act of discriminating,
whether it's making fun of someone, talking about something badly, or leaving someone
out. In the civil rights law, unlawful discrimination refers to unfair treatment of an
individual or a group based on certain characteristics, including: age, disability, ethnicity,
gender, race, or religion. Discrimination can occur mostly anywhere. A lot of the time,
with children, it happens at school, but with adults, it happens at work. In the past year
(2016-2017) there has been discrimination with voting. When it comes to voting, many
people have different opinions and some have the same. This is where discrimination
happens the biggest.
When people are at work, some company’s prohibit discrimination from
happening. If it happens to occur, the scene will then be brought to court depending on
how bad the situation was. When discrimination happens at a school, sometime if not all
the time, teachers/staff can’t be watching the students all the time to know what’s going
on. If a staff member or teacher sees an event occur, then the consequences will
12
probably be brought into the office. Make sure if someone has discriminated a person to
tell the school principal. If the person who got discriminated doesn't feel comfortable
going to tell on their own, they can take a friend or even a parent. Here is a list of
procedures the person can do.
1. Keep a record of what happened, when it happened, who did it and the names of
any other people involved.
2. If you’re not happy with how the school dealt with your complaint, you can take
the situation further by complaining to your school’s director.
3. If the issue is still not resolved you can make a complaint to the
Anti-Discrimination Commissioner. The complaint should be made within 12
months of when the discrimination happened, otherwise the complaint will not be
investigated.
4. Complaints are usually resolved when the student sits down with their school
officer from the office and have a conversation about what happened and what
the school can do to resolve the complaint; coming to an agreement.
5. Sometimes this process does not lead to a good outcome. If a bad outcome
happens the student has the option of taking the complaint to court. However, the
student should not go to court without getting legal advice first.
13
Anyone may feel scared about making a complaint, but it is against the law for
someone to treat you unfairly or harm you. Discrimination is not right and the person
may want to speak to their parents or another adult that he/she trust. If he/she does not
speak to someone, or report what happened, then no one will know what is going on
and they won’t be able to help he/she.

Summer Camps
Summer fun
An exciting summer camp for 8th graders and younger is held at Barstow.
Everyone will experience with academics, arts, sports and enrichment for children. The
campers stay active with over 400 engaging options. Summer at Barstow runs Tuesday,
May 30 through Friday, August 4. When the campers sign up, they can basically choose
their schedule. The children will add an academic activity in the morning, and then they
will have multiple other options such as swimming or any other sports. The campers will
also have to bring their own lunch throughout the days of the camp. The students or
campers will be set up with a teacher/leader and they will be paired up based on the
advance of the child’s learning for the first half of the day. The child can go at any speed
they do work as and there is no rush.
The second option for this camp, includes the daytrippers or field trip camp. This
involves going to amusement parks, museums, sports arenas, theaters, water parks
and more. These activities help improve socializing and building friendships while
having fun. If someone’s child wants to do this part, then they will need to sign up and
sign a waver. The campers will ride on buses to these fun places. With having this
activity, the campers will also be provided a morning/afternoon snack, or they can bring
15
one themselves.
https://www.barstowschool.org/page/summer/overview
Another camp for kids this summer is the Theatre of Imagination in Johnson
County. Kids get to act, sing, dance & make movies in a creative way. The director’s
name is Miles McMahon and he writes all the plays with no leads and no auditions.
Everyone who is apart of the camp gets an equal-sized part in a play designed just for
them. This camp is known for their crazy creative play names. They have camps May
30 through August, 11. The child can choose to just go for just the first week or the
second week. Every camp does new shows. The shows are free so there will be no
tickets and family and friends can come watch the performance. This camp also
provides customers with no extra cost.
The main goal of the camp is to build self esteem and improve self confidence through
the performing arts. If a child wants to join, than the parent would have to call the
program because they actually want to talk to people rather than just filling out
information.
