LISTENING SKILL - PART A

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

I enjoy cooking because it keeps me happy in my life.
Whenever I feel sad or bored, cooking ease that for me in
a big and good way. I started cooking when I was 6 years
old, but it was a simple one such as putting the chicken
slice and cheese between 2 slices of bread and used my
favorite condiment of mayonnaise and tomato sauce and
let it heat up for about 30 seconds. When I grew older, my
knowledge towards food grew to new depths when I
learned how to cook American food on the grill when I
was 13 years old and dad was the reason why I got better
at cooking since he explained to me how to use
temperature controls.

Thus, cooking is the only hobby in which I know how to do
best and usually cook for my family, relatives, and friends
too. The first dish I made on my own without any assistance
was Alaskan Cod with Lemon Pepper that I really enjoyed
very much when it bakes in an oven. Now, I evolved into
making various cuisines such as Crepe from France, Mexican
Tacos and Pizza from Italy using my fresh ingredients.

TOPIC 1: WHAT DO YOU LIKE?

LISTENING SKILL - PART A

In my opinion, yes, hobby can become a career option in the
future because the way we make a living should reflect who
we are as an individual in the future. When choosing an
occupation, we must take into account of our interest,
personality and work values. Given the amount of time
spending at work, it is essential to enjoy what to do while we
are there. It is a mind-boggling that most people unable to
give any consideration to the leisure activities they enjoy
when they are deciding what they want to do to make a
living.

(SUGGESTED ANSWER)

OR

In my opinion, no, hobby could not become a career option in
the future because many hobbies fall under the creative
category and we all know what can happen when we hit a
creative block. Again, it also can be frustrating and annoying
when it happens when myself as a hobbyist. We have to
delve very deep to find that creative spark and that could be
demoralizing and ruin the enjoyment.

THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING

The movie, The Kid Who Would be King, released in 2019, combines old
school magic with the modern world. It is a movie that speaks about hope
and fulfilment as it portrays a young boy's rise from being an average kid
to a mature leader. It is an adventure family movie, with its fantasy being a
great attraction for young people, particularly teenagers.

A young boy, Alex (Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he's just another nobody, until
he stumbles upon the Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Just a regular English
schoolboy, Alex is chosen to wield Excalibur and save the world. With the
Excalibur in his hands, he has to unite his friends and enemies into a band
of knights and fight the evil Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson). Alex must
become the great leader he never dreamed he could be for the sake of the
future.

Viewers will be able to discuss several positive messages in the story,
including teamwork, perseverance, courage and loyalty. This is a movie
that believes in the kindness of children and its eventual optimism about
the future. It becomes, in essence, a healing myth for the ills of society.

The movies is sentimental in all the right places, and never melodramatic.
Parents need to know that The Kid Who Would Be King is a modernised
version of the Arthurian legend of the Sword in the Stone.

The action is creatively staged, without ever getting too intense or scary for
young viewers. The script strikes a balance between humour and sadness.
It is a movie to be enjoyed for its promise of hope for the future.

TOPIC 2: TEEN'S LIFE

LISTENING SKILL - PART A

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Advances in technology mean today's teens are facing issues that no previous
generation has ever seen. While some issues are not exactly new, electronic media has
changed or amplified some of the struggles young people face. The prevalence of
digital communication has changed the way teens interact with their peers and
romantic interests. Because of this, many teens lack essential interpersonal
communication skills like knowing how to pick up on social cues. Much of this
dysfunction can be linked to the overuse of technology. Teens' social media and texting
habits as well as how they consume media is changing the way they communicate,
date, learn, sleep, exercise, and more. In fact, the average teen spends over nine hours
each day using their electronic devices. Here are 3 social problems teens struggle with
every day.

First and foremost, depression. Depression is an example of an adolescent issue that
has always been around but has fortunately gained more public attention in more
recent years. The taboo nature of acknowledging mental health problems is becoming
more and more a thing of the past. There are arguments for both sides on the topic of
depression in teens, some argue that there isn’t actually an increase in case numbers
but rather stronger data recordings in more recent years, while others argue that
young people accessing social media during their formative years is a recipe for
disaster, as young people at this point in their lives are on a journey of self-discovery,
so for these young people to be constantly peering into a digital world of unrealistic
standards they are sure to hinder their self-worth. There are a number of other points
to technology use that researchers have found to be a hindrance in young people
developing mental fortitude, such as, FOMO and the interference it can be for
adolescents from engaging in chapter building exercises such as team sports and other
peer activities. These problems stockpile and leave adolescents feeling a stronger
sense of loneliness and isolation. Depressive disorders are treatable, and can often be
remedied with a lot of practical steps, such as diet, exercise, sleep routine and so on,
but it’s important to seek professional help. If your teen seems withdrawn, experiences
a change in their sleep patterns, or starts to perform badly in school, schedule an
appointment with your teen’s physician or contact a mental health professional. Do not
delay getting help for your teen if you notice these symptoms.

66

TOPIC 2: TEEN'S LIFE

In addition, bullying. Starting off with an age-old struggle that most generations can
identify with, Bullying has always been and will continue to be a problem within school
systems. There are a lot of hopefuls out there that think bullying can be eradicated,
and this unfortunately is just not a realistic stance on the problem. As long as we have
young, insecure and impressionable people being placed within a huddle of others that
are experiencing the same fears and anxieties, there will always be cases of bullying in
circulation. The best countermeasure is to educate young people in how to best
deescalate and squash unwarranted confrontations. The big change in the bullying
landscape these days is the subcategory of Cyberbullying. Due to a large part of young
people’s social life consisting of social media, a lot of bullying these days now has a
larger audience with acts of cyberbullying becoming almost theatrical displays of
humiliation for online viewers. In fact, cyberbullying is becoming the prevalent form of
bullying these days simply because its harder for authority figures such as teachers to
intervene and police such encounters, and the harassment isn’t limited to school
hours, bullies have the ability to torment their victims around the clock. The fact that
bullies can use a tool created to connect people in order to further their reach of
harassment is awful, yet there are ways to counteract such online attacks.
Subsequently, academic problems.

In more recent years there has been an increase in school students dropping out of
their senior years at high school, according to recent studies. A high school dropout is
likely to earn 200,000MYR less over his lifetime when compared to a high school
graduate, which can have a significant impact on a young person's future. But, it's no
longer just the "troubled teens" who are dropping out of school. Some teens feel so
much pressure to get into a good college that they're burning themselves out before
they graduate from high school. Parents and teachers should stay involved in teen's
education. Provide support and guidance and be ready to assist teen if he encounters
problems.

WRITING SKILL - PART B

Different people have different ideas about dreams and goals. Some people
think dreams are like seeds that we need to water and grow. Others think that
children are slowly losing the ability to dream.

An education expert, Professor Fullan believes that dreams and goals are seeds
which have to water and grow. If we can learn how to set small measurable
goals, one day we can achieve our dreams. Most importantly, we have to keep
trying and giving ourselves our time to achieve our goals. We have to continue
working on things that will give pride and joy.

On the other hand, a magazine article suggests a different idea. The writer
thinks that it is not necessary to have dreams and goals. The most important
thing is to do small things with love. We should put in effort and care into daily
activities such as singing, dancing and drawing.

I really like the idea of breaking down dreams into smaller goals. Even thought I
do not have a dream yet, there are many things I feel proud of. For example, I
feel proud and excited to represent my school in a badminton competition. So
to start off, I can set some smaller, short-term goals to help me become a better
badminton player. I can wake up at 6.30 a.m. every morning to go jogging. I
hope if I continue practicing, I will be able to represent my school in the next
badminton competition.

Another year of good fortune is beginning in China, fireworks pop higher in the sky,
dragon bands in the streets and the city slows down to celebrate the Chinese new year.
In Chinese culture, it’s the most important time of the rooted in traditions and customs
passed ages. A celebration lasts for 15 magical days full of family together and
delicious food and good fortune. Today, Chinese New Year is built with happiness but
according to legend it didn’t start out that way. A long... long time ago in China, there
was big scary nasty beast minion whose name means year. He had razor sharp teeth,
giant claws and really mean growl. Most of the time he lived in the wilderness but the
darkness night of the year when the noon was in the sky, he would sneak into the
village and scared everyone inside even the animals. People dreaded the new moon for
many… many years until a Wiseman taught them three things Nyan was afraid of loud
noises, fire and the color of the red. The next time, king and the village fought back.
They hit the drums as loud as they could let every firecracker they had and were the
color red from head to toe. Nyan rim far away and never came back. After that the
people started celebrating the union instead of fearing it that celebration became a 15
days festival of family food and good fortune called Chinese New Year. Every Chinese
New Year is always represented by one of 12 animals and the Chinese zodiac chosen
by the Jade Emperor centuries and centuries ago. According to legend, a long time ago
in China, the Jade Emperor held a great race. The first law of animals to reach his
palace would be the winners and they would each get a year names after them and
their honor during the race. The Ox was winning until he had to cross a rushing river
the wreck was back behind him and could not swim very well so the kind Ox let the rat
ride on his back as soon as they got to the other side, the rat jumped off and scurried
to the finish line to win the race. That’s why the first year in the Chinese Zodiac
calendar is the year of the Rat. Another animals reached the palace to create 12-year
cycle of the Chinese zodiac. It said your birth year is named after and shape your
personality. You might be honest like a dragon, horror smart like a monkey. When your
animal takes its turn in the zodiac cycle, legend said is that your year will be full of
surprises but no matter what generally you are, everyone is excited to honor this
ancient traditions even in modern New Year celebrations.

Julia Eddylina,
23/6F Jalan USJ 8,
47630 Subang Jaya,
Selangor.

Dear Julia,

How are you? I have something to share with you today. my dad brought us to a
vacation to Kelantan for three days. My siblings and I have never been to Kelantan
before, so we are really excited.

On the first day, we reached Kota Bahru by bus. As it was time for our meal, we went to
the Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah. This best pasar in Kelantan is really awesome. As we
were a bit hungry, we bought keropok lekor and Kelantanese nasi dagang. Yummy! The
food sold was really cheap! That night, we took a boat trip to Min Fireflies Garden. It
was really lovely to see trees along the river lit up by fireflies! I have never seen such a
sight before.

On the second day of our holiday. We are now at Pulai Princess Cave (Zi Xia Tong),
which is located in a limestone tower called Princess Mountain. We are really
fascinated by the 12-metre high statue of the Goddess Guan Yin.

On our last day in Kelantan. Mum has always wanted to go to Tumpat to visit the
temples, especially the Wat Photivihan or also known as Sleeping Buddha Temple. I
hope we will have time to visit some of the temples in Tumpat. I have attached a
picture of my vacation in Kelantan. I look forward to hearing from you.

Your sincerely,
yaamunnah

TOPIC 3: OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY

WRITING SKILL - PART B

Malaysia has a number of festivals and celebrations, most of which are either
religious or cultural in origin, and are swathed in traditions and rituals.

Besides that, Malaysia is a country where one can experience a multitude of cultural
celebrations and festivals, as well as, and most importantly, good food all year
round. Almost every month of the year, tourists and locals alike immerse
themselves in one celebration or another, thanks to the diverse cultural practices
we have.

Also known as Hari Raya Puasa, it marks the culmination of Ramadhan, during
which Muslims the world over fast for a whole month. Traditional Malay food such
as rendang, ketupat, and lemang is served. This is also a time to forgive and forget
past quarrels, where family members ask for forgiveness from friends and family
members.

Celebrated worldwide by the Chinese to mark the first day of the New Year in the
Chinese lunar calendar, the celebrations last for 15 days. Expect fireworks, lion
dances, the prominence of the colour red, and open houses with scrumptious
Chinese meals.
Besides that, Chap Goh Mei, or the 15th night of Chinese New Year, symbolises the
end of the festival. To celebrate the Chinese version of Valentine's Day, young
women inscribe messages or well-wishes on oranges and throw them into lakes or
ponds.

Also commonly referred to as Diwali or Festival of Lights, the festival is significant to
all Hindus as it symbolises the triumph of good over evil. Oil lamps are lit to ward
off darkness and evil, and like every other major cultural festivals in Malaysia, open
houses are held.

A religious festival to mark the birth of Jesus Christ for Christians, Christmas in
Malaysia is celebrated like everywhere else in the world. However, Christmas is also
viewed as a universal celebration by many, one that that carries a secular rather
than religious meaning. Even without the traditional "white Christmas", the
celebrations carry on with a kaleidoscope of lights, endless Christmas displays, and
crazy shopping deals for all.
