About the Program

Lone Star College-University Park Developmental English courses polish reading
and writing skills to prepare students for success in college-level courses. Students
become efficient readers and writers by creating a toolbox of strategies for both
academic and work environments.

DevelopmentAl English

The LSC-University Park Developmental English Department offers Corequisite
ENGL 1301, a composition and rhetoric course for students who need extra
support in writing and reading. Students enroll concurrently in ENGL 1301 and
either a one-hour or two-hour lab course as determined by placement test scores.
Corequisite English courses are taught by faculty trained to teach adult learners
the writing, reading, and critical thinking skills necessary for college success.

English for Speakers of Other Languages

The mission of the Department of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
at LSC-University Park is to offer English classes that prepare students for success
in college-level courses, the global workplace, and their daily lives.
The program offers classes in grammar, writing, reading, oral communication,
and pronunciation. Class placement is determined by an ESL Placement Test.
Upon successful completion of the program, students may register for college
credit classes. ESOL classes are also designed for students who want to find
a better job and improve their day-to-day communication skills. LSC-UP is an
innovative campus, where ESOL learners have multiple opportunities to get
engaged in cultural and educational events and be a part of the community.

Professor Brian L. Reeves earned his Master of Arts in English Education
with a concentration in teaching writing from New York University and his
B.A. in English from Prairie View A&M University.

Suzanne Weatherly, Ed.D.

Professor Suzanne Weatherly has been at Lone Star College for ten years
focusing on English and Developmental English. Before entering the world of
higher education, Weatherly spent fourteen years in public education as a
teacher, principal, and reading specialist. Weatherly loves teaching students
about strategies to comprehend what they read. Weatherly holds a Bachelor
of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Houston Baptist University,
a Master of Arts in Education degree from the University of St. Thomas, and a
Doctorate of Education in Educational Administration from Baylor University.
Paula Khalaf, M.A.

Professor Paula Khalaf has a Master of Arts in Education in curriculum and
instruction focusing on language arts from the University of Houston. She also
earned her Master of Arts in English from Sam Houston State University where
her areas of study were contemporary American literature, technical writing, and
early British literature.
Elizabeth Peña, M.A.
Professor of Developmental English & English

Professor Elizabeth Peña has a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from
Southern Methodist University and a Master of Arts in English from the University
of Texas Pan-American. She is currently a Ph.D. student at Texas A&M University.
Her research interests include college persistence, underrepresented students,
and diversity in higher education.
Kristen Khalaf, M.L.A.

Professor Kristen Khalaf graduated from the University of Houston with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism in 2010. Shortly after, she started
working at PBS behind the scenes on Living Smart with Patricia Gras. In 2011,
Khalaf began teaching Developmental English at Lone Star College-Kingwood.
“That semester is when I fell in love with teaching and pursued my master’s degree
from The University of St. Thomas to teach upper-level classes. Apart from PBS,
my entire career has been at Lone Star College; it is truly my second home.”

Irina Nizova, M.A.

Professor Irina Nizova got her Master of Arts in Linguistics with special emphasis
on TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from California
State University - Northridge. She also has a Master of Arts in Teaching English
and German as foreign languages from the Urals State Pedagogical University in
Ekaterinburg, Russia. Her academic interests lie in the area of language structure,
history of English, and communicative approaches to teaching grammar.
Madhulika Tandon, M.A.

Professor Madhulika Tandon completed her Master of Arts in Psychology from
Lucknow University, India in 1986. She also earned her Master of Arts in
Education in International Literacy from Sam Houston State University in 2013
with focus on ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) instruction.
Bonnie Duhart, M.A.

Professor Bonnie Duhart has a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages from
Pepperdine University, an Master of Business Administration from IESE in
Barcelona, Spain, and a Master of Arts in Education in Curriculum and
Instruction from the University of Houston. She also has an Master of Arts in
Linguistics with an emphasis in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages) from Texas A&M Commerce.

Department Programming

International Studies Club

The International Studies Club brings together students who are interested in
international studies and travel. Students participate in an array of cultural
events. They also learn more about the study abroad program and international
studies degree.

Resources

Strong writing skills support academic and professional success. Located in
the Student Learning Resource Center (SLRC), The Writing Lab provides free
academic coaching and services to help students strengthen their writing skills.
