TRAINING
In 1944, at the age of 69, E.L. Craig began a roofing business in an old streetcar barn in Joplin, Missouri. Mrs. Mary Ethel Craig named the company TAMKO—from the first letters of the five states the company anticipated as its sales territory: Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. TAMKO: MORE THAN 75 YEARS IN BUSINESS TAMKO’s founding principles are simple: work hard, do your best, be fair and honest, and hire people you can trust to do the same. Years later, those principles were solidified into our company’s Core Values of “Honesty, Integrity and Compliance.” A strong history of independence, family and American manufacturing continues today in TAMKO’s day-to-day operations, headquartered in the heartland of America. Nowhere is this spirit of patriotism more clearly seen than in TAMKO’s continued support for veterans and first responders by hiring them for approximately 15% of the company’s workforce, as well as providing financial and product donations to wounded service members and the nonprofits that support them.

Ventilation & Moisture Control Deck Materials Underlayments Roof Slope Shingle Installation Fasteners & Fastening Review Roof Installation Specifications
JOB PREPARATION REROOFING Prior to beginning a reroofing project, the decision must be made whether the existing roofing material will be torn off or remain in place. Several factors can influence this decision. Condition of the decking and framing material, number of existing roofs, local building codes and type and condition of the existing roofing materials will all need to be evaluated. The decking and framing materials should be examined to determine not only whether they are capable of retaining fasteners, but also whether they will be able to support the added weight of an additional layer of roofing materials along with any loads that will be expected, such as snow and roof traffic. Local building codes will often dictate the number of roof layers allowed before a mandatory tear-off will be required. When reroofing a structure that has an existing roof consisting of shake, slate or tile, tear-off is required. In addition, any asphalt roof that has become soaked with water or decomposed to a point that it will not provide a suitable re-cover surface should be torn off. RE-COVER If the initial examination of the existing roofing proves the existing decking, framing and roofing material will provide a suitable surface for an additional roof, there are additional steps required before roofing can begin. It is not recommended to install laminated shingles directly over existing laminated shingles due to the unevenness of the existing multi layered shingles. The function of the sealant feature may be compromised, preventing the shingles from sealing properly. Nail down or remove curled or broken shingles from the existing roof. Replace all missing shingles with new ones to provide a smooth base. Shingles that are buckled usually indicate warped decking or protruding nails. Hammer down all protruding nails or remove them and refasten in a new location. Remove all drip edge metal and replace with new. If reroofing over an existing roof where new flashing is required to protect against ice dams (freeze/thaw cycle of water and/or the backup of water in frozen or clogged gutters), remove the old roofing to a point at least 24 inches beyond the interior wall line and apply TAMKO® Moisture Guard®, TW Metal and Tile Underlayment, or TW Underlayment. Contact the TAMKO Technical Services Department for more information. [NOTE] Re-covers, roof-overs or partial installations are not eligible for the TAMKO HeritageShield®, TAMKO ProShield® or TAMKO MasterShield® Enhanced Limited Warranty. The roofing system must NOT be installed over an existing roof. Complete tear-off applications only. TEAR-OFF If the determination has been made that the existing roofing must be removed, all material should be taken off down to the roof deck. All old fasteners should be removed from the decking. The deck area should provide a smooth, rigid surface capable of receiving and retaining fasteners. Any rotted, deteriorating or warped deck areas must be replaced or repaired. These deck conditions can often be a sign of improper ventilation that will need to be addressed prior to completion of the job. After the old roofing material has been removed and any necessary repairs have been made, sweep the deck clean and cover the dry deck with the appropriate underlayment.
VENTILATION AND MOISTURE CONTROL VENTILATION Inadequate ventilation of attic spaces can cause accumulation of moisture in winter months and a build-up of heat in the summer. These conditions can lead to: 1. Vapor condensation. 2. Buckling of shingles due to deck movement. 3. Rotting of wood components. 4. Premature failure of roof. VENTILATION AND MOISTURE CONTROL To ensure adequate ventilation and circulation of air, the ventilation system must include inlets and outlets. This may be accomplished with a combination of ridge and soffit vents or by using gable end vents. FHA minimum property standards require one square foot of net free ventilation area to each 150 square feet of space to be vented. This may be reduced to one square foot of ventilation area per 300 square feet if at least 40% and not more than 50% of venting is provided not more than 3 feet below the ridge and if a Class I or II vapor barrier is installed on the warm–in–winter side of the ceiling in climate zones 6, 7, and 8 as recommended by the 2018 International Residential Code. For more information consult your design professional. If the ventilation openings are screened, the total area should be doubled. WARNING: Use of TAMKO shingle products in an assembly that includes polyurethane foam insulation (including without limitation an application directly to the underside of a roof deck or within a wall assembly) may cause premature degradation or failure of this product. (See TAMKO Technical Notice published August 28, 2019) TAMKO BUILDING PRODUCTS LLC ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEAKS OR OTHER DEFECTS RESULTING FROM FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS. IT IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE VENTILATION.
DECK MATERIALS TAMKO agrees with ARMA that distortion or damage of asphalt roofing materials resulting from deck movement is not a manufacturing defect of the roofing product. This condition is not covered by the TAMKO’s Asphalt Shingle Limited Warranties. New Roof Deck Construction (Clean Deck): Roof deck must be smooth, dry and free from warped surfaces. It is recommended that metal drip edges be installed at eaves and rakes. When installing shingles on an existing structure (not a new construction installation) a clean deck may be required for certain shingle warranties. This means that the roofing system must be a complete tear-off to the deck. Plywood: All plywood shall be exterior grade as defined by APA – The Engineered Wood Association. Plywood shall be a minimum of 3/8“ thickness and applied in accordance with the recommendations of APA – The Engineered Wood Association. Oriented Strand Board: Oriented strand board shall be exterior grade as defined by APA - The Engineered Wood Association, minimum 7/16“ thickness, APA-rated in accordance with Voluntary Standard PS 2 and applied in accordance with the recommendations of APA - The Engineered Wood Association. Sheathing Boards: Boards shall be well-seasoned tongue-and-groove boards and not over 6" nominal width. Boards shall be a 1" nominal minimum thickness. Boards shall be properly spaced and nailed. STANDARD ROOF: For roofs having pitches equal to or greater than 4" per foot and up to but less than 21" per foot (4:12 and up to but less than 21:12). LOW-SLOPE: For roofs having pitches 2" per foot up to but less than 4" per foot (2:12 up to but less than 4:12), refer to special instructions titled “Low Slope Application.” MANSARD ROOF OR STEEP SLOPE: For roofs having pitches equal to or greater than 21" per foot, refer to special instructions titled “Mansard Roof or Steep Slope Roof.” TAMKO shingle application instructions clearly state TAMKO® shingles are for application to “roof decks consisting of plywood, OSB or sheathing boards capable of receiving and retaining fasteners and to inclines of not less than 2" per foot.” TAMKO requires a clean deck installation for a roof to be eligible for the Enhanced Warranties offered by TAMKO Certified Contractors.
UNDERLAYMENTS An underlayment must be applied over the entire deck before the installation of TAMKO® shingles. Failure to add underlayment can cause premature failure of the shingles, which is not covered by TAMKO’s Limited Warranty. Products which are acceptable for use as underlayment are: Asphalt Saturated Felt Underlayments • Any TAMKO® non-perforated asphalt saturated organic felt • A non-perforated asphalt saturated organic felt which meets ASTM D226 or ASTM D4869 Specialty Underlayments • Synthetic GuardTM Plus Underlayment or Synthetic GuardTM Underlayment • A polymeric underlayment designed for use with asphalt shingles which meets ASTM D8257 • TAMKO® Moisture Guard® Ice & Rain Underlayment, TW Underlayment or TW Metal and Tile Underlayment (additional ventilation may be required—contact TAMKO’s Technical Services Department for more information) • A self-adhesive underlayment designed for use with asphalt shingles which meets ASTM D1970 IMPORTANT: TAMKO DOES NOT ALLOW THE USE OF STAPLES IN THE APPLICATION OF UNDERLAYMENT PRODUCTS In areas where ice builds up along the eaves or a back-up of water from frozen or clogged gutters is a potential problem, TAMKO® Moisture Guard® , TW Metal and Tile Underlayment or TW Underlayment (or any specialty eaves flashing product) may be applied to eaves, rakes, ridges, valleys, around chimneys, skylights or dormers to help prevent water damage. Contact TAMKO’s Technical Services Department for more information. Application of Self-adhered Shingle Underlayment (The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association [ARMA], Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual [Washington, D.C.: ARMA, 2022], pg. 47, Fig. 7-3) Application of Underlayment (The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual (Washington DC: ARMA, 2022), pg. 81, Fig 12-1) NOTE: Please review the diagrams to the right. TAMKO requires that drip-edge be installed along the eaves of the roof PRIOR to installation of Ice & Rain Underlayments, and drip-edge installed OVER the underlayments on the rake edges.
ROOF SLOPE LOW-SLOPE APPLICATIONS On pitches 2" per foot up to but less than 4" per foot (2:12 up to but less than 4:12) cover the deck with two layers of underlayment. Begin by applying the underlayment in a 1/2-sheet width plus 1/2 width of the side lap (i.e., for 36" wide asphalt saturated felt with a 2" side lap, the width would be 19") along the eaves. Place a full sheet width over the starter piece, completely overlapping it. All succeeding courses will be positioned to overlap the preceding course by 1/2- width sheet plus 1/2 width of the side lap. If winter temperatures average 25°F or less, thoroughly cement the laps of the entire underlayment to each other with any adhesive meeting ASTM D4586 Type I from eaves and rakes to a point of at least 24" inside the interior wall line of the building. As an alternative, one layer of TAMKO® Moisture Guard®, TW Metal and Tile Underlayment, or TW Underlayment self-adhering underlayment may be used in lieu of the double coverage underlayment. MANSARD OR STEEP SLOPE ROOF APPLICATIONS: If the slope is equal to or exceeds 21" per foot (60˚), each shingle must be sealed with any adhesive meeting ASTM D4586 Type I immediately upon installation. Quarter-sized dabs of cement must be applied to shingles. Fasten in accordance with Mansard Fastening Pattern Instructions for the specific shingle you are installing.

Fasteners Nails: TAMKO requires the use of nails as the method of application. Standard type roofing nails should be used. Nail shanks should be made of minimum 12-gauge wire, with a minimum head diameter of ⅜ inch. Nails should be long enough to penetrate ¾ inch into the roof deck. Where the deck is less than ¾ inch thick, the nails should be long enough to penetrate completely through plywood decking and extend at least ⅛ inch through the roof deck. Drive nail-head flush with the shingle surface. Proper and Improper application of roofing nails (The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual (Washington DC: ARMA, 2022), pg. 24, Fig 3-7) Correct placement of the fasteners is critical to the performance of the shingle. If the fasteners are not placed as shown in the diagrams as described on the next pages, it will result in the termination of TAMKO’s liabilities under the Limited Warranty and Arbitration Agreement. TAMKO will not be responsible for damage to shingles caused by winds in excess of the applicable MPH as stated in the Limited Warranty and Arbitration Agreement. See Limited Warranty and Arbitration Agreement on the wrapper or tamko.com for details. CAUTION: ALL FASTENERS FOR MANSARD APPLICATIONS MUST BE DRIVEN INTO THE COMMON BOND AS SHOWN IN THE MANSARD ROOF OR STEEP SLOPE FASTENING PATTERN DIAGRAM.
Fastening STANDARD APPLICATION & HIGH WIND WARRANTY FASTENING PATTERN DO NOT PLACE FASTENERS BELOW THE BOTTOM PAINT LINE – OR ON OR ABOVE THE UPPER PAINT LINE OF THE SHINGLE. (For use on decks with slopes 2" per foot up to but less than 21" per foot.) Preferred Fastener Location: Fasteners should be placed 6-1/8" from the bottom edge of the shingle, penetrating through the common bond, and located horizontally as shown in the Standard and High Wind Warranty Fastening Pattern diagram. Acceptable Fastener Location: Fasteners must be placed in the 1-1/2" nailing area beginning at 6-1/8" from the bottom edge of the shingle and ending at the paint line located 7-5/8" from the bottom edge of the shingle. Nails shall be located horizontally as shown in the Standard and High Wind Warranty Fastening Pattern diagram. Nail Zone: The Nail Zone for standard fastening is defined as the 1-1/2-inch area beginning at 6-1/8 inches from the bottom edge of the shingle and ending at the paint line located at 7-5/8 inches from the bottom edge of the shingle. MANSARD APPLICATION For use on decks with slopes equal to or greater than 21" per foot. One fastener 1" from each end, one fastener 8-1/2" from each end and one fastener 16" from each end for a total of 6 fasteners per shingle. (See Mansard Roof or Steep Slope Fastening Pattern illustrated below.)
Fastening ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGH WIND WARRANTY TAMKO also requires the use of TAMKO® starter shingles including sealant strip at eaves and rakes. It is not offered for re-cover applications. If High Wind Application requirements are not followed, the High Wind Application Warranty MPH, as stated on Table I in the Limited Warranty and Arbitration Agreement, reverts to the Standard Application Wind Warranty MPH limit. (See Standard and High Wind Fastening Pattern illustrated above.) “High Wind Application” means application of shingles in strict accordance with the High Wind Warranty Fastening Pattern application instructions stated previously. See local building codes for additional nailing requirements. High Wind Application is offered on new construction or complete tearoff applications only.
