PLANNING APPLICATION FOR 498 HOUSES ON LOW STREET REFUSED
Residents of Sherburn in Elmet will be aware The application was subsequently refused by
housebuilders Persimmon and Redrow recently the District Council on 11th January, but it is
submitted a proposal for 498 houses on the land likely that the developers will appeal. In addi-

the development and inform residents of their
concerns. The main basis for the objection was
that traffic from the development would have to
travel through the village or South Milford to get
to the wider road network. Concerns were ex-
pressed about the capacity of the traffic lights at
the village centre, rat running through the Fair-
way and Eversley estates and road safety con-
cerns on Low Street.
In addition the Parish Council were concerned
that allowing this development would effectively
determine the location of new development in the
village for the foreseeable future without any
proper public consultation on options.

SHERBURN IN ELMETE GALA ASSOCIATION
The Gala Association with the help of a few volunteers put up the Christmas Lights over
the weekend of 26/27th November.
During the year we had 10 lights repaired and refurbished by Leeds Lights and purchased
additional rope lights to refurbish the shop and house lights. We have had to move to rope
lights as bulbs are not allowed under EEC regulations. Unfortunately some of the rope
lights were defective and had to be repaired during December. The Association has also
provided the Christmas tree and lights at the Cross, and at the Methodist Church. The
cost to date is £2260. The Lights were taken down over the weekend of 7/8th January.
The Christmas Party on the 11th December was a great success with well over 100 children
all receiving a Christmas selection box from Father Christmas. The Disco was hosted by
DJ Matt Black and the Sherburn children’s choir the High Notes, sang Christmas Carols
whilst waiting for the arrival of Father Christmas. We were delighted to see an article in
the Selby Times about the origins of the Sherburn Christmas Party.
The Gala will be held on the 19th May [Third Saturday in May as usual] as always Volunteers
are most welcome to help erect the various tents and gazebos. The Association wishes res-
idents of Sherburn and area the Compliments of the Season and hope for a good 2012.

Selby Globe was born from a love of film and lack of provision in the Selby area that has spanned over
30 years. With the kind support of Selby Town Council and Selby Area Voluntary Services, Selby
Globe screened their first film In September 2009. Since then we have shown film to over 7000 people
in the district. We show a range of classic, modern and sing-along films to all ages at the Town Hall
venue and in rural venues across the district with our outreach kit.
This year we plan to build on our success and take Outreach kit further into the Selby District. We have
already shown film in Hensall, Carlton, North Duffield, Sherburn, Monk Fryston and Selby the Selby day
centre.
Our next screening in the Sherburn area is at South Milford Primary School with plans for Monk Fyrston
and South Milford Church Hall. We plan to cover Tadcaster Ulleskelf and Brotherton as the year goes
on.
In order for the project to work the hall has to be given as goodwill, we provide the kit and pay for the
screen licenses. We are a not-for-profit community group and find this is the best method to avoid out-
lay for the group wishing to use our services. In return we must have a dedicated team to promote the
event paying special attention to raising awareness in the villages around. Some venues do well, with
excess funds put back into the project, whereas others leave a loss. This way even the smaller com-
munities can benefit from the project. We encourage the community venue to provide refreshments,
some venues offers hot dogs, popcorn, drinks and cakes to raise funds.
If your community building/church hall is interested we could show a pilot screening to see if there is a
demand. For more details please email selbyglobe@yahoo.co.uk or call 01757 708450 for more de-
tails. Eva Lambert, Selby Globe Community Cinema.

ATHLESTAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Awards for All Big Lottery grant
Athelstan Community Primary School has been awarded lottery funding to further develop the
schools Foundation Stage outdoor area. Awards for All Big Lottery grant of £8,839.00 was
received which the school has used to provide a creative and explorative environment. The
area now incorporates natural elements which will help children gain a sense of freedom and
will encourage them to explore their surroundings, through unstructured play. The area will be
engaging and fun and will now provide opportunities to enable children to develop their com-
municative and social skills. The outdoor environment is vital to develop healthy active life-
styles this funding will enable us, to exploit our children’s full potential, by maximising their
exposure to recreational and explorative play.
The grant has funded: A poly tunnel mound ,with climbing logs ,a clatter bridge , a jolly roger play ship to develop imagination and
social interaction, a story telling area with mushroom seats and activity boards and panels for imagination and creativity and also
a water play system with a chute.
This funding has allowed us to complete the substantial development of the Athelstan. Community Primary School Outdoor Foun-
dation area. Headteacher Karen O’Donnell said ―The school is very grateful for the support from the Awards for All Big Lottery
Fund which has enabled us to complete the school’s vision for it’s Early Year’s provision.
Eco Schools Green Flag Award Athelstan Community Primary School has been awarded the Green Flag award for its com-
mitment to the environment. The award is recognition of the schools on going commitment to the environment and to the ethos of
Eco Schools. Miss O’Donnell head teacher is delighted with the achievement and recogni-
tion of the hard work by both staff and pupils. Mrs Barton the schools science coordinator
has worked with the children to gain the award which has helped develop many projects
within school. The children have a greater understanding of recycling, energy saving, wast-
age, planting and growing and care for the environment. The Eco Schools Assessors Com-
ments about the school were:" The main strength the school has is the enthusiasm
and commitment of the students; this was more than evident during my visit. It was apparent
the enthusiasm of the students wasn't about obtaining the Green Flag, it was about be-
ing actively involved in the many projects this school has taken part in. The
adult involvement from Mrs Barton, Mrs Clayton and Mrs Thompson has been a key factor
in empowering the children to be instrumental in the work towards the Green Flag Award."
SHERBURN HIGH SCHOOL
Sherburn High Christmas Round-Up
The Christmas period was hectic for staff and students at Sherburn High
with a variety of performances, charity and fundraising events. Students
demonstrated their generosity and community spirit by providing a
Christmas Lunch for members of the community, gifts for the Operation
Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal and food for the hampers donated to
local residents. Performing Arts were high on the agenda with a wonder-
ful Christmas festival of drama and music much to the delight of the au-
dience. There were many star performances by students from all year
groups from dancing, samba drums, acting and stand-up to rock band
Retro Chimp, trombone, violin and singing. Finally came The Second
Shepherd’s Performance at All Saints Church Sherburn, a heart-warming
and festive nativity play first performed in medieval times, making it all
the more poignant being performed in our very own medieval village
church. Students taking part were a joy to behold, Daisy Erskine and
Callum Miller played the Star of Bethlehem and they certainly shone
brightly! David Taylor, the Second Shepherd Mac gave a performance to
remember, his warmth and humour invoked the true spirit of Christmas
and the evening was nicely rounded off with carol singing led by cast
and crew. And Finally… the next exciting instalment from the Performing
Arts department is a musical show and a spring concert during this term

―Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people live full and independent lives.‖
Great British Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 18th May 2012
Want to do something different? Want to raise money where you live or work? Want to eat
Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 18th
May 2012 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s information and support ser-
vices. You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local
community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By
inviting 7 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £35.00 from
your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
Last year we had over 100 suppers taking part in England and Wales and we raised £6,000. In the three
years we have been running the event we have raised £20,000 to support spinal cord injured people.
The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who
become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by
providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to lead independent lives.
Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000
spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Officer, Elizabeth Wright, says, ―The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportuni-
ty for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and
Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group want-
ing to run a fun evening with your group. Be a part of something special and make a real difference to help
spinal cord injured people gain access to the information and support they need to enable them to live full
and independent lives.‖ For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845

Elemet! The town is set to host its first ever Sainsbury‟s Sport Relief Mile on

6 miles knowing that all the money raised will help to change the lives of people
living unimaginably tough lives right here on our doorstep, across the rest of the
UK and in some the world‟s poorest countries.
Janie Moor said: “The Sainsbury‟s Sport Relief Mile in Sherburn is here and
it‟s your time to shine. From teeny-tots with their mums and dads, to super

SHERBURN METHODIST CHURCH
This May Sherburn in Elmet Methodist Church celebrates its 25th anniversary in the current building. Of course the
Methodist Church has been in Sherburn much longer than that, and as a part of our celebrations we will be holding
an exhibition of photos and inviting you to share your memories with us. There will be a number of events in the
week from the 6th-13th May and we hope you will feel able to join us for some of them, look out for the posters with
more details.
We are delighted that our building is well used during the week, the busyness begins on Monday with our thriving
Tot’s and You Group, and continues with other groups like Brownies, Weight Watchers, Baby Time, Women’s Fel-
lowship, Ballet and Dance, Chat Inn (a lunch club for the elderly), a Craft Group, Yorkshire Country Women’s Guild
Meetings, and our Regular Coffee Mornings on a Saturday. In addition to this are our weekly services at 10:45AM on
a Sunday, and a new Monthly Service called Messy Church, this is for families, and involves craft work, stories, songs
and a shared Sunday Tea with sandwiches and cakes etc, all are welcome to any of our services!
On Saturday the 12th May we are holding a special exhibition, prayer and gift day, the Chapel will be open all day and
people will be available to pray with you if you would like that. There will also be creative prayer stations for you to
engage with, and the chance to sit and chat and share some light refreshments. We will also be inviting you to make
a gift towards the work that we are doing and would be grateful if you felt able to support us in that way, but we do
recognise that this may not be possible so please be assured that you will be made welcome no matter what.
I hope that you will be able to join us in giving thanks to God for his goodness to us during our week of celebrations
which will (weather permitting) be kicked off with an Open Air Songs of Praise!

ELMET LIONS
We meet on the 2nd Monday of the month at Milford Lodge, South Milford. When required we hold extra activ-
ity meetings at the Red Bear.
At the start of each year plan our fund raising events, meetings and social events. Our social events are as di-
verse as curry evenings to a gentle walk followed by lunch.
Throughout the year we hold a number of Bingo and Fish and Chip suppers for the elderly in Sherburn and sur-
rounding villages
November was can collection month at the Co-op for the Christmas parcels that are distributed throughout
Sherburn and surrounding villages to the elderly and the needy. This year we not only
had the support of the Co-op customers but donations from the Sainsbury’s distribu-
tion centre on the industrial estate enabled us to deliver 140 parcels.
December was Santa Sleigh season. Our sleigh was refurbished Christmas 2010 and
with the help and assistance of an army of “friends
of Elmet Lions” we do runs in the surrounding villag-
es throughout December. The weather was much
kinder to us this year and we successfully completed
the planned routes. Even though there is a recession
at the moment our thanks are given to the generous
people who contributed to our charity collection.

A Community Action Group has been formed to investigate the feasibility of opening up the High School
Swimming Pool for community use.
The Parish Council is considering a BMX Park.
We will need to work with the developers to ensure Section 106 money is spent on facilities and infrastruc-
ture required for any planned growth to the village.

THE OLYMPIC TORCH AND SHERBURN IN ELMET
Three Community Groups are working together to try to reverse a decision that will see
the Olympic Torch literally by passing Sherburn & South Milford. The present route in-
volves torch processions in both Monk Fryston (population 858, 1 primary school),
Barkston Ash (population of 450, 1 primary school) but ignores Sherburn & South Mil-
ford, (combined population of 9,000+ 3 primary schools and one secondary school).
The Community Association and Gala Associations and the Parish Council are lobbying
hard to try and ensure the Torch procession travels through Sherburn and South Mil-
ford rather than along the By Pass.
The bizarre decision came to the attention of Parish Chairman, Bob Packham, who
wrote to the National Torch Relay Group seeking an explanation. The response men-
tions that there has been extensive consultation and that the decision was made for operational
reasons. However there has been no consultation with the District Council, Parish Council or
local schools and the operational reasons have not been explained. It is still unclear who has
made the decision.
In addition to lobbying the organising committee, a petition for local schools and residents has
been organised by Myrtle Hall to try and put pressure on the powers that be. At the time of writ-
ing we still await responses to the basic questions; who made the decision and what were their
motives?

Another issue has been dropped kerbs in the village. Having got most yellow
lines sorted I have concentrated efforts on identifying poor dropped kerbs and non
existent ones. People in the village have made contributions to what is needed and
I can announce that some of these are being dealt with as this Informer goes out
to you.
One final item is that of speed indicators. The cost have these has dropped with
improved technology, and I intend tackling this area of concern next. The road
into Sherburn from South Milford is a road in question, its 20mph, when I do that
I invariably get 'tail gated' usually by a large 4x4 complete with headlights on
telling me to get out the way. Such people need to know the following (if you
know such a person please let them know): the footpath is narrow and kids com-
ing out of school march along it in lines of 3 or 4, there are entrances and exits all
along it with restricted viewing, mothers with pushchairs and a young child walk-
ing are vulnerable, and above 30mph the survival rate for a child falls dramatical-
ly.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this and if you have any issues please
contact me by phone, e-mail, face book or twitter, any way you wish.

PETER PAN NURSERY
Sherburn in Elmet is home to the only additional needs nursery in the Selby area. It was founded in 1985 and is situated on North Crescent
(next to Hungate Primary School). The nursery is extremely well equipped with its own dedicated sensory room and the children benefit from a
large outdoor play area with garden and vegetable plot. The nursery not only provides specialist care, education and support for children with
additional needs but also provides respite for families who may need support due to illness, depression or family circumstances. We are fortu-
nate and thankful to have a number of dedicated knowledgeable volunteers who help support the children at the nursery along with experienced
and qualified staff. Our nursery is managed by a voluntary committee and we welcome people with fresh ideas and a passion for Peter Pan
Nursery. We currently require a new Treasurer and volunteers to help in the charity shop and nursery. If you feel you could help in any way,
please contact the nursery 01977 681863 for further information.
2011 was a very busy year for us; here are just a few of the events we took part in. We were lucky to have been chosen, along with Martin
House to receive a generous donation from fundraising events taken place at Dingtindales and Scarthingwell Golf Club and were presented with
a cheque at a special fundraising and taster evening. May saw us celebrate the Royal Wedding by taking part in our first Sherburn Gala float
parade; Children, parents, staff and volunteers dressed in their finest wedding outfits to walk behind our fantastic red, white and blue royal wed-
ding themed float, we were thrilled to receive 1st Prize in our category for our float! We have had several visits to the Nature Reserve at Church
Fenton where the children had a fantastic experience pond dipping, bird watching, bug hunting; you may have even spotted us on Look North as
they filmed us taking part in lots of activities. We were extremely fortunate to receive substantial funding from the Jane Tomlinson Fund and
local Masonic Lodges which enabled us to refurbish our toilet area (installing child sized toilets and a new disabled toilet), office and sensory
room whilst also creating a new private meeting area. We were enormously grateful for a donation from the Working Horse committee which
enabled us to buy several new specialist chairs for the children along with a new storage unit for toys. They arrived just in time for our „Open
Event‟ on 17th October. We had the pleasure of showing our friends and supporters around our newly refurbished areas and unveiled a plaque
dedicated to our Founder Gwan Sykes. We finished our year with a Christmas party. For many years the staff and University Air Squadron stu-
dents at RAF Church Fenton have supported Peter Pan Nursery by not only putting on a wonderful Christmas party for all the children to enjoy
but by donating money they have raised throughout the year to help with the continued running of our nursery. The children had a fantastic time
and each received a present from Santa, these are kindly donated each year by the Carrie family of Mytum and Selby Skip Hire.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported Peter Pan Nursery throughout 2011. We are always so very grateful for donations to help
with our running costs, whether from local individuals or businesses who donate raffle/tombola prizes, to those who contribute to and buy from
our Charity Shop on Finkle Hill in Sherburn in Elmet (behind Moorhouse Opticians). We look forward to your continued support in 2012.
