Archeological evidence shows mankind’s development and potential over thousands of years, forming individual and unique cultures, as seen through the rituals, beliefs, clothing or even jewellery of each nation. The art of the tattoo is another form of body decoration from the days of old, that later evolved into the form of makeup—the art of adding colour to parts of the body. Twining or basketry weaving also represent indigenous patterns that feature symbols and motifs unique to each community. These forms of cultural heritage that have been passed down through the generations, a powerful force that is hard to erase. The energy of this colour palette is derived from the combustion of clarity and natural colorations, not from chemical reactions. They include Fah Planokkaew blue—from the parrot fish that is abundant in the warm seas of Thailand, the shining scales of which refract light into an iridescent shade of blue and green, Lued Mangda—a dusty blue borrowed from the shade of the marine creature found in the seas of Phuket, Khiao Chlorophyll green, Chompoo Utaitip pink, Numtalay Chaifung blue, Loha Ngern silver, Num Dork Unchun blue, and Kaminpong yellow. All these fibres absorb moisture well and are therefore breathable and comfortable to wear. They are also lightweight, with a soft and smooth texture, making them ideal fabrics for a hot climate. When combined with creative techniques such as mudmee (ikat), khit, jok, yok dok brocade, koh or luang, embroidered or patchwork, pha kaoma weaving or wax-resist batik, hangkrarok and eco-print, they become even more suitable for the season, while at the same time, uplift the Thai textile industry to a global standard. Natural and cultural sustainability are the key to the modern lifestyle, leading to the trends in the Thai Textiles Trend Book Spring/Summer 2023 that have been linked together under the concept “Moving Culture”, reflecting the nature of culture that is dynamic. Indigenous culture is always adapting and changing—gradually but continuously—with the two selected Thai textiles—pha kaoma and batik—as case studies of cultural exchange within Thailand as well as Southeast Asia. All five trends reflect the colours, forms, details and materials that help to upgrade Thai craftsmanship to meeting the changes in contemporary culture and the sustainability trends of global society.
