LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
I want to begin with a final note for 2018: Congratulations to Sierra as they took home the Cup for 2018 Company of the Year. This is a great honor and well-earned recognition for performance delivery across all our metrics. Please look at the award winners in this issue. Congratulations to everyone. I look forward to seeing your company amongst the list for 2019 winners.
In this issue of Dimensions, we highlight many areas that show our heavy investments in APG to deliver on our focus of Performance and Growth. Performance begins with our people constantly striving for excellence in safety, developing skill-building training classes, and gathering teams for best practice meetings. We are heavily investing in plants through capex spend on equipment upgrades, additional machines to increase capacity, and trucks to better service our important customers. We have ongoing efforts focused on our commercial/sales and operational performance, delivering better tools to get more out of our existing investments. On the Growth front, acquisitions are a key part of our strategy. We have had two great companies join our team this year – Allied Concrete Products and Buckeye. We welcome them to the APG family.
We are in the middle of our busy season, and APG has performed well to date. Thanks in advance for your hard work and attention to detail. Let’s continue to all strive for excellence and deliver a great customer experience.
Work safe,

SAFETY UPDATE
What does “safe” mean to you? We all use that phrase both at work and at home. We tell people to “drive safe” when they are leaving. We tell loved ones to “be safe” when going on vacation. Of course, we tell our coworkers and team members to “focus on safety” while at work. We even watch TV commercials encouraging us to “drive safely,” but what does that mean
to you personally?
For me, being “safe” includes planning my next step. By looking ahead, I’m avoiding potential harm. When driving, I’m scanning for that driver who is distracted by their cell phone. When changing out a light xture in my home, I’m taking steps to ensure the electricity is off—verifying with a meter it is off—and taking the extra time to get my ladder instead of standing on a chair. When walking a manufacturing site, I’m always looking for mobile equipment, blind corners and trip hazards.
I do my best to reduce risk in my life and for those I work and care for, but I’m not perfect. It is at those times I must rely on someone else to have my back. Throughout my life, many people have stepped in and protected me from myself and whatever danger I was about to encounter. I am thankful for these people because it can be hard to correct someone’s actions—especially if they are older or in a position of authority.
I encourage you all to be “safe” this summer. Look ahead and put plans in place to reduce risks for you, your family and your co-workers. Finally, have the courage to step up and address that person who may be about to take a misstep or has just lost focus. Your courage could make the difference between someone going home with a bruise to their ego versus never going home again.

PLANT EXPANSIONS
& EQUIPMENT UPGRADES
EXPANSION IN PHOENIX
Superlite plans to install a new Masa XL big board plant at its Highland manufacturing facility, located on a 10-acre parcel adjacent to Superlite’s West Phoenix location. The new plant will be installed in the 60K-square-foot building that formerly housed Trenwyth finishing equipment. Due to strong demand in Arizona, both of Superlite’s existing big board plants have
been operating at over 96% capacity since 2015. The new, more efficient machine at Highland will provide increased production and hardscape capacity to grow market share in this region. The new Masa will have the capability to produce 1.3m cycles annually, increasing Superlite’s total hardscape production capacity from 2.3m cycles on the existing Highland and Lone Butte big board machines to a new total capacity of 3.6m cycles.

NEW MASA MACHINE REPLACEMENT
IN LEHIGH ACRES, FLORIDA
In November 2018, the Coastal Lehigh Acres facility completed installation of a new state-of-the-art Masa XL paver machine. The machine replaced a 20-year-old Hess RH1000, which had become increasingly costly to maintain, resulting in downtime and production inefficiencies that reduced the capacity of the plant. The new paver plant is a significant investment by Oldcastle APG to meet the needs of the ever-expanding southwest Florida market.
The Masa XL uses steel pallets in the production process to ensure consistent compaction across the width of the machine, maximizing product densities. In addition, the machine has the latest safety enhancements including a sound room to enclose the machine and reduce noise and silica exposure to employees. Columbia Machines supplied the batching equipment featuring three-color capability. Batch and color blending controls showcase the latest software technology supplied by the industry leader, Egan. All equipment is designed
NEW MASA MACHINE REPLACEMENT
IN ROSENBERG, TEXAS
In January, the Rosenberg plant completed a site renovation that began in Fall of 2018. The cornerstone of the upgrade was the new Masa XL, which replaced a 20-year-old Masa machine, the oldest in the APG network. The Rosenberg facility services the residential and commercial paver markets in Houston, southwest Texas and parts of Louisiana.
The Masa XL has already made a huge impact in Rosenberg by improving ef ciency, enhancing productivity and reducing downtime. This combination has resulted in an approximate 30% increase in capacity. Running at 233 cycles per planned machine hour YTD, the Rosenberg facility is now one of the most ef cient in the APG network.
In addition to the new Masa plant, the facility added a Wulftec top sheeter, plus new electrical service and associated service panels. Translucent windows and LED lighting was installed throughout, which not only enhances visibility, but creates a brighter, more energetic work environment. The entire facility was also repainted including exterior equipment and silos.
to be highly efficient, capable of producing in excess of 40,000 square feet per day.
An Open House was held for local customers on November 28-29 to showcase the capabilities of the Masa XL and how it will enhance the support of sales for both commercial Belgard® pavers and our retail product lines. The event was very successful with over 100 customers in attendance.
Vice President of Operations, Pat Miller, and Site Manager, Mike Britt, spearheaded the project. Contractors installed the new electrical service and new foundations, but the Rosenberg team completed all other work. Using APG employees for labor not only saved
money, but also served as a team-building exercise and allowed employees to gain greater understanding of the equipment so they could hit the ground running at start up.

DALLAS LAWN & GARDEN PLANT
INSTALLS NEW ROBOT PALLETIZERS
In recent years, this facility had reached
the limits of its production capacity,
and servicing the growing market
began requiring help from multiple
facilities that were farther away. To help
meet the challenge, two new robotic
palletizers were installed to replace
aging equipment. The installation and
setup for each robot took approximately
one week and was running at full speed
within a month. Bag production has nearly doubled on these two lines in the first two months of 2019 compared with the previous year.
BAGGING LINE EQUIPMENT ADDED IN
LONE BUTTE, CHANDLER, ARIZONA
Superlite's Lone
Butte plant produces
concrete and mortar
for the big box stores
and some local dealers
throughout Arizona, as
well as parts of Texas and Nevada. For the last five years, the plant has been sold out or at capacity. Superlite recently added a new, state-of-the-art robotic secondary packaging line to bag and package more product, essentially running two separate products at a time. The plant is forecasted for a 12.5% increase in annual output.
NEW SERVOPAC® MACHINE:
TYRONNE, GEORGIA
GMS installed a new Besser ServoPac®
that enhanced the speed and efficiency
of its Tyrone, Georgia plant. As an
architectural products plant, mold and
height changes happen often. Formerly,
operators spent over an hour’s time
changing the mold, which included
climbing into the machine. Now,
changes are made via a computer in
approximately 15 minutes. The new, automated technology is easier to use, has greatly improved the safety and morale, while also decreasing junk blocks.
ADDITIONAL DRY MIX LINE ADDED IN
CINCINNATI, OHIO
North eld’s Cincinnati plant
installed a new Standley
Batch and Chantland Dry
Mix production line with an
Egan Batching System. The
$1.4M line more than doubled
capacity and allowed dedicated
lines for both coarse (Sakrete)
and ne (mortars, grouts and
polymeric sand) products. This specialization improved ef ciency by eliminating changeovers. Improved quality also enabled manufacture of bagged and bulk Amerimix products, creating greater inroads into the commercial mortar and grout market.
NEW AUTOMATION FOR PORTLAND
BAG PLANT
CPM-Portland was selected in early
2018 to be the first R&D test site
on the west coast to implement
new custom-designed Automated
Bag Placer equipment. Installation
began in December and was fully
operational by early February. With
this new Bag Placing equipment, the
facility has become fully automated,
improving both the environmental
and ergonomic conditions for the employees. The facility has also achieved more consistent run rates and stronger performance numbers with all products.
NEW LINE FOR THE “BEST LITTLE
MULCH PLANT IN THE NORTH”
The Wyoming, Rhode Island Lawn & Garden facility recently moved to a new building, allowing an additional bag line to be added to the facility. The new building is located adjacent to the bulk processing yard, which allowed them to eliminate double handling of raw materials. The line expansion allowed this site to pick up incremental independent bagging business in the surrounding region, improve production efficiency and enhance overall profitability.

PRODUCT SHOWCASES
INTERNATIONAL BUILDERS’ SHOW
Organized by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), IBS is the largest light construction building industry trade show in the United States. Belgard® hardscapes and MoistureShield® composite decking shared a booth. This proved to be an advantage, as numerous builders noted an uptick in buyers looking for mixed materials in outdoor design. Many booth visitors liked that both Belgard and MoistureShield fall under the Oldcastle APG umbrella, which could simplify design rendering and ordering for outdoor designs that include mixed materials.
It was also noted that re pits, once considered an after-market trend, are now making their way into new construction as a popular upgrade. As a result, builders were very interested in Belgard’s easy-to-install re pit kits and the knowledge that new styles are in development. With labor shortages a hot topic, these and labor-reducing products garnered a great deal of interest.
Another key takeaway was an increased interest in durable building materials. Today’s homeowners do not want the hassle of dealing with maintenance issues—and neither do builders who offer a warranty. For this reason, of the 2,000-plus exhibitors, MoistureShield® Vision® composite decking was chosen by both LBM Journal and Family Handyman as one of the hot new products of this year’s show. The product was also featured on a local television morning news program promoting the builders’ show. This revolutionary product offers CoolDeck® technology, can withstand being installed directly on the ground or under water, and features a natural variegated woodgrain texture in trend-forward color options.
SALT LAKE TRIBUNE HOME & GARDEN SHOW
The largest show Amcor participates in each year, the Salt Lake Tribune Home & Garden Show is host to thousands of homeowners looking for outdoor living inspiration and information. Amcor Sales Representative Tanya Cartwright works directly with the show director to ensure Belgard is the main attraction. This year, like those past, did not disappoint.
The Belgard Gardens area featured six contractors and approximately 16,000 square feet of Belgard pavers and walls. The display included pergolas, landscape walls, seat walls, raised planters and a Bristol SeriesTM grill island, outdoor brick oven and outdoor replace. Circular paver designs showcased popular and new paver products, centering on a re pit. Feedback was incredible, and most participating contractors lled the rest of their year with leads received at the show.

CANADIAN HOME SHOWS
PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW
Belgard® was once again honored to be the exclusive hardscapes sponsor of the nations’ premier horticultural event—the annual Philadelphia Flower Show—which ran March 2-10.
Show attendees were treated to amazing displays across the ten- acre show oor. The world’s leading oral and garden designers used this year’s theme of “Flower Power” to explore how owers convey a wide range of messages transcending cultures and borders. Through imaginative exhibits and breathtaking oral displays, concepts like community, healing, peace, transformation and hope were brought to life in surprising, vibrant ways.
The Belgard display booth at this year's Flower Show was designed to emulate the experience of walking through the lush outdoor spaces of a beautiful home, from the front paver walkway and garden entrance to the Ultimate Backyard. The
Expocrete participated in four consumer shows throughout Canada: the Calgary Home & Garden Show, the Edmonton Home & Garden Show, the Saskatoon Gardenscape and the Winnipeg Home & Garden Show.
The featured products on display were the BordeauxTM Series Outdoor Fireplace and Beonstone panelized stone siding, plus two 2019 debuts: ZenWall and Galiano Slab. Both new products garnered tremendous acclaim at all shows due to their unique innovation. ZenWall sets itself apart with its modern profile, two-sided design and interlock feature. Galiano Slab is a face mix 50mm profile architectural slab that takes its namesake from the Galiano Islands of British Columbia, with a striking Tofino Grey color blend that is also inspired by a special location in British Columbia.
design featured raised planters, a vertical garden, an outdoor theater, and a reside conversation area with two re features: a BordeauxTM Series Fireplace and a contemporary linear gas re pit. In a special nod to the “Flower Power” theme, Belgard showcased how owering plants and greenery can be incorporated with pavers and landscape walls to produce welcoming outdoor living spaces for relaxation and entertainment. In addition to being featured in the display booth, Belgard products were used throughout the show in a variety of creative ways.
Those visiting the Belgard booth were given the chance to enter to win a Weston StoneTM Fire Pit. Belgard leveraged the equity of the show and extended the giveaway promotion across the nation through multiple public relations and marketing channels.

TECHNISEAL PRODUCTS NOW
MANUFACTURED IN WEST REGION
With the acquisition of
Techniseal® in 2017, the
need for a manufacturing
site on the West Coast
was imperative to improve
distribution and provide
consistent packaging and
product quality. In early
2018, CPM in Portland
was tasked with taking on
production of Techniseal lines for distribution into California, Washington and Oregon. Several minor equipment upgrades were made to the plant, and manufacturing control transitioned away from a contracted toll blender over to the Oldcastle umbrella. The Portland site now manufactures NextgelTM and SmartSand® polymeric sands in both Grey and Napa Tan. This transition has strengthened the distribution power of Techniseal products sold through both Sierra and CPM.
MOISTURESHIELD’S COOLDECK TECHNOLOGY WINS ‘INNOVATION OF THE YEAR’
An option on two of the MoistureShield® composite decking lines, CoolDeck® technology won “Innovation of the Year” at the 7th AQMAT Recognition Gala, held March 9 in Montreal. CoolDeck minimizes heat absorption by up to 35% versus traditional capped composite deck boards, providing a more comfortable outdoor experience. Available in two color options each for the Vision and Infuse decking lines, CoolDeck was voted the most innovative product on the market this year by gala attendees. The group included nearly 500 directors of hardware corporations, leading manufacturers, service providers and merchants who are members of the Quebec Hardware and Building Supply Association (AQMAT).
SATURA OFFERINGS EXPAND AND
ENTER THE MASONRY ARENA
Three years of research, analysis, focus groups and testing went into the development of SaturaTM Color Technology, resulting in the most natural-looking color enhancement technology in the manufactured hardscape industry. Satura was launched in the Fall of 2016 with Belgard® Provence® Slab. In 2018, the offering was bolstered with the addition of MadriaTM Slab. This year, Provence and Madria Tandem® NEXT walls were added, creating a complete hardscape offering of horizontal and vertical products. With Permacon’s April launch of AriaTM Stone full-depth veneer, APG now boasts
the first masonry product in the world to offer this type of technology. Production of Aria Stone began in May.
A new program aimed at
builders and architects
will be launched in
the coming weeks by
Permacon: the Satura
Signature Program. This
program will give builders, architects and designers the chance to incorporate designs, colors and textures inspired by the latest trends into their concepts, thus allowing them to leave their own “signature” on the projects they create.
NEW PREMIUM PRO-MIX LINE
ADDED TO SAKRETE PORTFOLIO
Leveraging the brand
equity of Sakrete,
this new premium

MAKING BUSINESS BETTER
Across North America, Oldcastle APG companies continue to take advantage of operations programs and create new initiatives that help improve various aspects of the way we do business.
THE FLORIDA TRANSPORTATION GROUP PILOT PROGRAM
A strategic review revealed that Oldcastle APG was not fully leveraging resources in some markets when it comes to freight management and delivery costs. In response, APG put together the framework for a pilot program in Florida with two different business units featuring multiple leaders and multiple teams: Coastal and Lawn & Garden Southeast. The new Florida Transportation Group (FTG) has set out to develop efficient procedures to utilize our private fleet, leverage the OTM system, and ultimately roll out these best practices company-wide. Progress has been made in just the initial phase of this pilot, signaling it as the starting point for a much larger, overall transportation initiative.
OPS PRODUCING IMPROVEMENTS IN THROUGHPUT AND SITE FINANCIALS
Across North America, the Operations Performance System (OPS) program has proven to be a valuable tool in increasing machinery uptime and run rates. Through the implementation of OPS, plants are initiating better preventative maintenance programs, identifying and addressing slower running SKUs, improving communication on the plant floor, doing better root- cause analysis, and developing subsequent action plans for critical issues that erode capacity. As a result, APG is seeing improvements in up-time across its manufacturing facilities.
OPS was already improving site financials by increasing throughput with the same labor, but the program is now taking this one step further. In addition to the goal of making machines run more efficiently, the program now addresses P&L analysis to identify opportunities for additional wins. Through an in-depth financial analysis, site management OPS teams can identify and prioritize key elements impacting margin and put action plans in place to support recovery.

EMIGSVILLE RESTRUCTURE AND CAPEX RESULTS IN TURNAROUND
The Emigsville plant near York, Pennsylvania underwent a major restructuring and CapEx project repairing its mixer and replacing its outdated Besser kiln crawler with an updated version. The Emigsville facility provides Trenwyth® Trendstone® and Astra-Glaze® products for most of the country. The improvements have helped to enhance ef ciency, performance, and safety and to reduce downtime, all of which have contributed to turnaround in pro tability. The CapEx project was managed by Regional Operations Manager, Greg Donelson, and Plant Manager, Chris Shermeyer.
As the industry becomes more technologically savvy, and with an emphasis placed on making better data-driven decisions, Permacon underwent an extensive training session in both of its regions to adopt the new CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) in all its plants. Two weeks were dedicated to the shift from the previous maintenance program to this new invigorating system.
Plant Managers, Supervisors, Operators and Vice-Presidents of Operations engaged in a hands-on training session with the goal of adopting CMMS into the daily activities of preventive and corrective maintenance. CMMS is already proving to be a powerful tool in reducing Unplanned Downtime due to robust scheduling, workorder tracking and the ef cient, more user-friendly way for employees to follow requests as they ow through the approval process to completion.
In a well-received effort to grow customer base and improve the labor force in the marketplace, CPM conducted their first “Contractor Efficiency Training” session at their Frederickson site. Dan Hughes with Segmental Systems, one of CPM’s premier contractors in the Spokane market, put together the format for an information-packed day of training on the installation of pavers, walls and a variety of other hardscape products. The standing-room-only crowd included over 100 contractors from across the states of Washington and Oregon.
The following feedback was received from Colby Covington, CEO of Buddha Builders: “I was fortunate enough to come down and be part of the first efficiency training. This training seminar on the most efficient methods for seamless installations will benefit both customers and businesses alike. They’re definitely setting the standard for the paver suppliers of the area, if not the nation.”

LAWN & GARDEN BULK YARDS USE DRONES TO IMPROVE ACCURACY AND SAVE TIME
In the past, site managers spent as much as 10 hours per month measuring and calculating accurate bulk stockpile inventories. In recent years, aerial drones and report technology were introduced, reducing time spent to less than an hour and improving accuracy and consistency with reports that include photos, 3D models, date and time stamps, and site maps. Currently, there are 33 Lawn & Garden sites utilizing this technology and well over 100 individual users. Usage of drones has grown to also verify delivery amounts, track production management, view yard layout, and conduct roof and silo inspections. Drone pilots should be aware of FAA ight restrictions regarding nearby airports, schools and prisons. Free software such as B4UFly from the FAA or AirMap can pinpoint any restrictions.
Constructed in 1999 in Waco, Texas, the Jewell Rekers facility was the first Rekers installed by Oldcastle in the United States. It boasts the smallest footprint in Rekers plant layout and first-generation technology in controls and most of the equipment...yet still finds a way to perform through total buy- in of the “team” concept and a collective drive to be the best in the business. Since taking on the team approach, the site has seen improvement in mold and system changeover time performances. Plus, eliminating the divisions in role between Maintenance and Operations allowed increased adaptability to conquer any challenge faced, resulting in Unplanned Downtime dropping in half and Cycles per Planned Machine Hour consistently improving year after year. The team recently celebrated a record-breaking production day completing 7,700 cycles in 24 hours and finishing out the tunnel to run 7,910 cycles in 24.62 hours.
The East region made a big investment in OPS in 2018. Part of that investment was adding an Operations Performance Leader (OPL) to each company. The goal of each OPL is to build an OPS community within each company that’s plugged into the national OPS team. This nationally trained person both drives performance and adds to operations bench strength. All four East companies have now promoted their initial OPLs to leadership positions within the company: Anchor to site manager, Coastal to site manager, GMS to transportation manager, and Adams to a role on the OPS team. Each company will be getting a new OPL. This national pool of talent is available to companies throughout Oldcastle APG and is proving to be a valuable resource.

RIGHT PEOPLE, RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME
RIGHT PEOPLE,
RIGHT PLACE,
RIGHT TIME
At Oldcastle APG, our people are our greatest assets. This core belief drives us to continually invest in and nurture those assets to achieve their full potential. At the same time, we put a high priority on maintaining a sense of community, both at the local level and on the global stage.
NATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM CONTINUES TO EVOLVE
As Oldcastle APG continued to grow, the need became evident for a national training program for operations employees. Two years ago Kathie Hayes, Director of Operational Performance, developed a program in conjunction with Craig Belasco, President of Operational Performance. They began the process by reaching out to vendors— such as Besser and Masa—to conduct machine-speci c training events that could be attended by plant operators from across North America. In the early stages, these training events were held off-site to avoid machine downtime. However, it was quickly discovered that hands-on demonstrations were needed to optimize learning. The program, thus, began to evolve to include a combination of classroom instruction and plant work to apply the learning.
Kathie continues to expand the program, which has now grown to include pigment and admixture workshops, as well as site manager training. Some classes are held at vendor locations, while others are self-paced online workshops. Most recently, the inaugural Site/ Operations Manager Workshop was held May 7-8 at the APG of ce in Atlanta and was attended by nineteen managers representing fourteen different businesses. Workshop topics included Safety, an Operations team overview and OPS reporting. The workshop also took a deep dive into Financials including P&Ls, BOMs and TWC. APG plans to hold at least one more site manager workshop this year.
Kathie strives to continue identifying opportunities to improve and expand the training program further.
e results are incredible. We’re developing better employees who are more engaged and more invested in their careers. We’re also making a better product with better uptime and more understanding of how the equipment works, but the best bene t is the relationships that are being built.

EXPOCRETE CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
On March 8, Expocrete celebrated International Women’s Day, a day recognized around the globe to bring awareness to woman’s issues such as violence, health concerns, and inequities in the community and the workplace.
In Canada, the workforce is made up almost half of women (47%). However, women continue to be under-represented in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), trade, manufacturing and management level roles. Expocrete recognizes the tremendous value of employing women in all types of roles.
A recent Forbes article cited a study illustrating that companies incorporating female leadership outperform the market year over year.
In this respect, Expocrete is proud to share that its senior leadership team is 50% female and that women are employed in production at four out of their ve manufacturing facilities. Although continuing to strive for a more balanced workforce, almost 25% of their employees are female, outpacing the 2017 CRH global statistic of 17%.
In celebrating International Women’s Day, Expocrete recognized that women strengthen the decision-making processes and bring a balance to the workplace that was not always a part of the Expocrete culture. The company also committed to continued investment in professional development to ensure that women have the same access to opportunities throughout Expocrete and APG Canada.
Sandra McMurray works as a main operator on the Expocrete Besser line. She also provides back up in the Customer Service department.
Tammy Barrett joined the Balzac, AB team in 2014. She is currently a backup operator on the big board Rekers machine.
Mallory MacNeil (left) with Ondraya Shaw (right). Mallory has worked at the Acheson facility for over 10 years. She is a super star on the fork lift. Ondraya joined last year and is learning to operate the big board machine.
Cassandra Mahmoudi-Nahrani joined the Richmond production team in March 2019. She's the rst woman to work in manufacturing for this facility.
Jeaneen has been promoted to Alberta Sales Manager for Expocrete. Jeaneen is respected for her technical knowledge by architects, speci ers, dealers and contractors.
INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY
For CRH to achieve the mission of becoming the world’s leading building materials company and a leading global industrials company, it means benchmarking ourselves against the world’s best companies across all measures. This includes becoming a magnet for top talent and fostering an inclusive and diverse work environment. Appreciating the differences that each employee brings will ultimately add to our success and competitiveness throughout the world.
As we continue our journey to be the best, we believe that Diversity of Thought is the goal. It is about creating an environment where everyone in the organization can be at their best, where we value different contributions, and embrace inclusion as a core leadership value.
We (CRH) have already made significant progress in laying the groundwork to create a more inclusive work environment. In March of this year, CRH named a Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer, Soma Garg, and established a Global I&D Council. Currently, the I&D team is in the process of designing and delivering leadership training, as well as establishing and reviewing core policies and recruitment guidelines. The initial goal is to put support structures in place that will enable CRH leadership to achieve its goals.
Our approach is simple. Small steps taken consistently over time will allow us to reach our potential and create a culture of inclusiveness that will help us to better compete on the global stage.

NEWLY HIRED SALES REP ONBOARDING EVENT
APG recently hosted 25 new sales representatives at its annual orientation, held April 23 and 24 in Atlanta. Offering the opportunity to familiarize sales reps with national and global aspects of Oldcastle APG and CRH, participants were treated to networking opportunities and a series of workshops and presentations by company leaders from multiple departments.
Before beginning the workshops, sales reps participated in a team- building exercise by completing the Spaghetti Tower Challenge in which teams of four constructed a tower using only dry spaghetti, masking tape, string and a marshmallow. The tallest tower was completed by Mason Hinkle of Adams, Chris Smuda of Sierra, Chris Barte of North eld and Keb Rogers of GMS.
Afterwards, President Tim Ortman of Oldcastle APG presented an overview of CRH and APG, touching on market positioning, breadth of locations, nancial highlights and professional priorities for 2019. Additional presentations were offered by Brian Reilly, CFO; Bob Malin, VP EHS; Steve McNulty, VP HR; Adam Wagenberg, Procurement Director; Allison Flynn, Marketing Director; Matt Watkins, IT Support Manager; Jake Alton, OPS Development Manager; Jason Newsom, Sale Development Manager; and Brad Wall, Sales Rep for GMS.
The two-day event included a bowling social at Bowlmor, at which the team of David Puentes of Sierra, Mike McGinnis of Coastal, Bill Kelly of GMS and Julian Velazquez of Jewell emerged victorious.
UPGRADED PROCEDURES FOR LOCKOUT/TAGOUT
"Lockout/tagout" (LOTO) is perhaps the most important method Oldcastle APG has utilized
in the protection of our most valuable resource: team members. With technological advances and gradual capitalization on workplace diversity, APG’s machine-speci c LOTO procedures had fallen behind. In addition, increased team member numbers at each location facilitated the conclusion that a procedural upgrade was of paramount importance. At the same time, CRH was implementing company-wide measures that necessitated the inclusion of speci c guidance on every procedure in use.
By October 2018, APG’s EHS team began seeking a way to improve the methodology behind creating these machine-speci c procedural guidelines. This new method had to be simple for those who create
the new documents and, more importantly, those who speak and read in languages other than English. In terms of comprehension, it was recognized that the method should be equipped with images
that would facilitate improved clarity. This attention to detail was necessary for such an important part of APG’s safety process.
As APG sought a solution, Oldcastle Infrastructure (OI) did so, as well. Together, APG and OI found a company and method that would address the needs of both divisions. The increased size and
scale also meant better pricing. This new system is currently being used to formulate the next generation of machine-speci c LOTO procedures, with every APG and OI location using the same
template. As a result, both divisions are now able to appropriately embrace team member diversity while utilizing procedures that traveling team members will recognize no matter where they might be working. It is this attention to the idea of OneCRH that will continue
to bring about successful cross-divisional collaboration.

OneCRH
UNLEASHING THE POTENTIAL OF OneCRH
The OneCRH mindset continues to take hold as various departments and companies within Oldcastle APG find new ways to collaborate, illustrating that we’re stronger together.
IMPROVING BUSINESS THROUGH CROSS-DEPARTMENT COLLABORATION
World class organizations function as a single entity in areas that leverage their strength and size while still respecting the needs of the individual. As an example of how APG and CRH embrace opportunities that exist when silo walls that divide departments come down, APG’s EHS team continues to blur the lines between “safety” and “production.” Nowhere is this more evident than safety’s developing partnership with the Operations and Engineering teams.
In January, a cross-department meeting was held with a major equipment vendor. Present in the room were the vendor’s lead sales and engineering minds along with members of APG’s senior EHS, Operations and Engineering teams. The group discussed not only current equipment designs, but also future designs, and put processes in place to make APG and the vendor better together. The group also discovered opportunities to save money while improving the level of safety AND production on their equipment. By working together, the APG collective was also able to better educate this European vendor on unique safety requirements that exist in the United States.
This meeting was the first of what is hoped will become the norm with other vendors in a continued effort to find ways to GUARANTEE the safety of our team members while also propelling APG into the future.
We put safety rst
CRH’s commitment to safety precedes everything else we do, and we are proud to have one of the best safety records in the industry. Our measurement of success always begins with our safety performance.
As part of the CRH family, our goal is zero fatalities and zero incidents. Embedding safety throughout our company means that every employee at CRH is responsible for safety. It also means we look out for one another. As an employee, you—regardless of your role—are responsible for your own safety and the safety of those around you.

AMCOR & ASH GROVE TEAM UP FOR PROVO HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT
Provo, Utah is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Because of this rate of growth, Provo High School had become one of the largest schools in the state and had long outgrown its urban site near Brigham Young University. In moving the school to its new 43-acre campus in west Provo, the school district and design team wanted to create an aesthetic that factored in both Provo’s past and the city’s move towards becoming a regional tech capital. The resulting design was a nod to tradition, but with clean lines and a neutral modern pallet.
Amcor Trinity white groundface CMU was chosen as one of the primary architectural materials. The front of each entrance was faced with a specialty veneer honed unit, also supplied by Amcor. The back of the building and the school’s multiple out buildings are also constructed with Amcor CMU. In total, the project included over 300,000 CMU units.
The mortar for the project was provided by Ash Grove, which had recently become part of the CRH family. Although specified separately prior to the acquisition, once Amcor and Ash Grove were both housed under the same corporate umbrella, it became
CRH RELATIONSHIP PROVIDES
LARGE WIN FOR MAJOR UTAH
DEVELOPMENT
The Traverse Mountains are a scenic range that separates Salt Lake Valley and Utah Valley. A rapidly growing city neighboring Provo, Lehi embarked upon a major planned community project in response to the area’s growing needs. Named for the nearby mountain range, the spectacular 2,600-acre Traverse Mountain Development contains more than 3,500 residential units, approximately three million square feet of commercial space, and hundreds of thousands of square feet of segmental retaining walls. With a plan that includes single- and multi-family residential units, churches, schools, and regional and national retailers, the development is now entering its fourth phase of construction. In a show of the OneCRH mindset, Doug Archibald with Oldcastle Business Development was instrumental in securing a large piece of business on the development project for both Amcor and Reynolds Excavation, both CRH companies. Reynolds has done a large portion of the excavation work on the project, and Amcor has supplied the predominant amount of the development’s retaining walls. Amcor and Reynolds also worked directly together on a few of the large retaining wall projects within the development.
easier for the two companies to work together. To the excitement of the school community, the facilities were completed in time for the opening of the 2018-19 school year.
Phase four of the Traverse Mountain Development begins this summer, which will include 30,000 square feet of segmental retaining walls manufactured and supplied by Amcor. “This tremendous win would not have been made possible without the CRH relationship,” says Craig Buehner, Hardscape Sales Manager for Amcor.
