Ingleside Church R2

Book R2

A CELEBRATION OF THE LEADERSHIP OF DR. TIM MCCOY AT INGLESIDE
September 2019

A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE PASTOR
While interviewing to be the Children’s Pastor in the summer of 2010, I quickly realized that Ingleside is a healthy church with a faithful and capable leader at the helm. It almost seemed that a church environment like this was too good to be true. Now, nine years later, I know more than ever before that what I assumed early on was an accurate perspective. Ingleside is an excellent church with a track record of healthy leadership. Our church is graced by the favor of our Lord in immeasurable ways.
Out of that favor comes a celebratory spirit that has characterized our church for decades. In light of that spirit, this magazine is a tribute to God’s faithfulness working through Tim McCoy over the past 30 years. The impetus for such a collection of stories, testimonies, pictures, and encouragements is rooted in Paul’s words to the Thessalonian church:
We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. (I Thessalonians 5:12–13, ESV)
It is a right, good, and biblical thing to honor our spiritual leaders. It is, in fact, a loving thing as well. It brings great glory to God since he enables that person’s vision and work. It edi es the body to recognize one who is faithful. It allows moments to look toward the future while acknowledging the sacri ces made in the past. Finally, it encourages everyone involved to “be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” (I Corinthians 15:58, ESV).
I hope this commemorative 30th anniversary magazine will ful ll all of those purposes and then some. I hope it will remind us of all the Lord has done and put a vision on our hearts for what he is yet to do. I hope you will enjoy this treasure. As our pastor, leader, shepherd, and friend says, “The best is yet to come!”
In the Spirit,
Andy Johnson Executive Pastor

30 YEARS...
ON PURPOSE
by Lindsay Acocella
4 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF FAITHFUL MINISTRY

In 2009, in celebration of Dr. McCoy’s having served two decades at Ingleside, Lindsay wrote a commemorative book entitled 20 Years at Ingleside: A Glimpse of God at Work. This article picks up where that book left off. Ingleside’s Bookstore continues to have copies of 20 Years at Ingleside available for purchase for those who would like a deeper look into Ingleside’s history and Dr. McCoy’s tenure.
The celebration of one pastor loving and leading his congregation for 30 years is a refreshing story of faithfulness. Dr. Tim McCoy has led Ingleside Baptist Church to know the Lord, to know the Bible, and to pursue the purposeful vision the Lord has continued to give him for this church. And over the years, hundreds have followed his pursuit of that purpose.
In September 2009, right after the church-wide celebration of the anniversary of Dr. McCoy’s 20th year as Lead Pastor, he wrote, “We are thankful to be a part of a healthy, growing church family after these two decades, and we are especially thankful for the strong partnerships we share with so many of you . . . . Beverly and I look forward to walking by faith with you and your families into the next chapter at Ingleside . . . . and, yes, I really am convinced that the best is yet to come!” (Sidelights, September 9, 2009).
Those next ten years of ministry proved to be ones of growth and change, of new initiatives and emerging leaders, of continuing to see the Lord at work in the hearts and lives of Ingleside staff, leaders, and members. Now, as we pause and look back over 30 years, it’s exciting to celebrate the fruit of faithful ministry.
Because just look at what the Lord has done.
Come. Grow. Serve. Go.
In the fall of 2013, pastors, staff, and leaders adopted a new statement and logo to concisely communicate the Ingleside discipleship path. The words were a new way of saying what had already been true of Ingleside for a long time. Under the leadership of Tim McCoy, the church has now known 30 years of this kind of intentional, on-purpose ministry that has changed countless lives for the kingdom of God. It’s one thing to have a purpose on paper. It’s quite another to see that purpose infuse every decision, every staff hire, every ministry, and to see that purpose bear fruit that lasts.
You see, the real proof is in the people. People are coming. People are growing. People are serving. People are going. At Ingleside, the lives of people are being changed week by week for the glory of God.
Biblical Teaching
One tool the Lord has used to both draw people and connect them to the Lord is the engaging teaching of the Bible that has been the standard at Ingleside for a long time. Over the past ten years, Dr. McCoy has taught the Bible through series such as An Ingleside Discipleship Journey (six messages), Why Grace Really is Amazing (ten messages), The Marriage Journey (eight messages), The Transformed Life (three
5

messages), Habits of the Heart (six messages), A New Year Started Right (four messages), Con dent Christians: Understanding and Experiencing Assurance of Salvation ( ve messages), Lessons from the Life of David (ten messages), Stories from the Kingdom (six messages), Flourishing (seven messages), The Redeemer and the Redeemed (four messages), The Serving Adventure ( ve messages), Wisdom to Live By: A Study of James ( ve messages), Words from the Cross (four messages), The Pursuit of Spiritual Excellence (four messages), Doubts, Questions, and Authentic Faith ( ve messages), The 500th Anniversary of the Reformation (six messages), and many more. The Lord has used Dr. McCoy’s engaging, down-to- earth way of presenting the truth of Scripture to change countless hearts by helping people grow both in knowledge of the Bible and in identifying practical steps of obedience to its teaching.
Church and Home
In 2014, under the direction of then Children’s Pastor Andy Johnson, Ingleside launched “Church and Home,” an emphasis on leading families to build a legacy of faith. The initiative gave a stable structure to stand-alone family events already in place at Ingleside and provided a clear path forward for the future. Favorites such as the Father- Daughter Dinner, Parent-Child Dedication, and Senior Banquet and Blessing have been joined by even more intentional, family- strengthening events throughout the year. Parents enjoy an ongoing partnership with their church and leaders as they strive to pass on the legacy of faith to the next generation.
6 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF FAITHFUL MINISTRY

Four Services, Three Styles
In September 2015, Dr. McCoy led the staff and overseers to implement a new worship opportunity on Sunday mornings. The traditional and blended Sunday morning services were thriving, but there was room and a growing desire for offering another option. Realizing that worship is most effective when one has the opportunity to worship in his or her musical “heart language,” Ingleside began a Contemporary Worship Service. Now, every Sunday, people have the opportunity to connect with the Lord in a traditional, blended, or contemporary worship environment. The new service has led to more people than ever before worshiping regularly at Ingleside.
Christmas at Ingleside
Nowhere has the fruit of Ingleside’s invitation to “come” been seen more clearly than at the annual Christmas presentations led by Jonathan Green and Ingleside’s Worship Arts Team. Attendance has more than doubled at these services over the past ten years, from 4,588 attending in 2008 to 10,692 most recently in 2018. These Christmas celebrations are more than just a tradition at Ingleside. Dr. McCoy has led this church to embrace intentional events and emphases that invite real people—from all different seasons and walks of life—not just to a place, but to a relationship with Jesus Christ. It’s been more than planning engaging activities that have invited the community to “come.” Ingleside has developed a culture that genuinely welcomes newcomers, no matter where one may be on his or her journey of faith.
Welcoming the Crowds
But there would not be room, both literally and guratively,
for newcomers without the wholehearted commitment of those who have called Ingleside home for a long time. Dr. McCoy has led the church to embrace initiatives such as the 2016 “Gideon’s 300” campaign, which encouraged committed Inglesiders to “park farther and sit closer” in order to make space for newcomers. The result has been that many who come to Ingleside for the rst time on a Sunday morning have a place to park, a place to sit, and are warmly welcomed into the vitality of worship and relationship.
Growing in Groups
Under the leadership of Discipleship Pastor David Peterson, Ingleside has also grown signi cantly in the opportunities available for deeper growth and authentic community within the context of a small group. In addition to healthy Sunday Morning Bible Study classes and Midweek study options, which began in the fall of 2011, there are now a wide variety of classes and studies for adults that provide even more opportunities for men and women to grow in a group. Now, any given week will nd several groups and seasonal studies meeting both at the church campus and all over the community for biblical encouragement and authenticrelationships.
Ingleside on TV
In addition to the weekly in-person teaching attenders enjoyed, a few years ago, Ingleside began to broadcast the Sunday morning message on WMAZ-TV. Early Nielsen surveys showed that this broadcast was viewed on average by more than 6,000 adults 18 years and older each week. It was a strong step forward in helping people take next steps of biblical knowledge and maturity, beyond the walls of 834 Wimbish Road. Ingleside was even more
7

intentionally impacting the Middle Georgia community. Since then, viewership has grown each year, to more than 9,000 in 2019.
A Chapter a Day
The heart of Ingleside’s Lead Pastor has consistently been to point people to the Word of God. So it was no surprise when that passion for biblical depth took on a new venue in March 2016 as Dr. McCoy launched “A Chapter a Day,” a brief, daily email comment on the Scripture. Just months after the initiative was begun, hundreds of people were receiving the biblical encouragement each day. By 2019, that number was up to more than 6,300 recipients a day. Now, in addition to gathering for worship on a Sunday morning, Inglesiders are reading and learning together while scattered throughout the community during the week.
To Israel
In June 2017, Dr. McCoy led a group of 59 Inglesiders on a biblical study tour of Israel, in partnership with Pastor Andy Cook of Experience Israel Now. The trip gave those who participated an opportunity to grow deeper in their knowledge of the Bible by experiencing the places of the Bible rsthand. It was a powerful experience for all who went.
Here, There, and Everywhere
And yet the love and servant- heartedness of the Ingleside people has reached far beyond the walls of the church campus. Ingleside has embraced the mandate Jesus gave at the end of his earthly ministry, that the gospel should go “here, there, and everywhere.” That phrase is how Dr. McCoy describes the ways Ingleside is intentionally taking the gospel to those who don’t yet know Jesus.
Under the direction of Missions Minister Lisa Call, opportunities to take the gospel have increased signi cantly over the past several years, and have included the annual Macon Impact emphasis, disaster relief teams, church planting partnerships in cities like New York, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Denver, and Portland, and several international trips. Through nancial giving and teams going, Ingleside men and women continue to take the gospel all over the world.
30 Purposeful Years
So, is Ingleside accomplishing the purpose the Lord has put on the heart of the faithful, obedient leader God has put at her helm for the past 30 years? If the abundant fruit in the lives of all of those who come, grow,
serve, and go is an indication, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”
Though only eternity will show the full impact that Ingleside Baptist Church, under the leadership of Tim McCoy, has had for the kingdom of God in this generation, those of us whose lives have been forever changed know a bit of what that impact has been.
And we are forever grateful.
Lindsay Acocella served on the Ingleside staff as Executive Assistant to the Lead Pastor from 2000–2006. Lindsay and her husband, Frank, have four children, and live in Arvada, Colorado. 8 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF FAITHFUL MINISTRY

30 YEARS OF MINISTRY IS SUC“H A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT. IN THE CASE OF TIM MCCOY’S THREE DECADES AS PASTOR OF INGLESIDE BAPTIST CHURCH, IT IS A TESTIMONY TO THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD, THE POWER OF CONVICTION, AND THE COMMITMENT OF A DEDICATED AND CONSECRATED LEADER. I HAVE BEEN SO GLAD TO KNOW TIM MCCOY FOR THE LAST 40 YEARS. HE IS A MAN OF REMARKABLE INTEGRITY AND VISION FOR MINISTRY. WHAT A WONDERFUL THING—TO KNOW A MAN FOR 40 YEARS AS A PARAGON OF INTEGRITY AND CONVICTION. I CONGRATULATE TIM, HIS GIFTED WIFE, BEVERLY, AND THEIR REMARKABLE FAMILY OF”INGLESIDE BAPTIST CHURCH.

Encouraging. Kind. Gentle. Patient. Teacher. Coach. Shepherd. Mentor. These words are only a sample of the ways God has used Tim McCoy personally in my life over the 20+ years that I have known and loved him. I have watched God use Tim’s diverse pastoral abilities and keen leadership senses to develop strategy, navigate challenges, preach God’s Word faithfully, pursue the heart of God passionately in worship, and “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ”—Ephesians 4:12, ESV. Tim’s love for and commitment to the mission of the Church is palpable and contagious. May God receive glory as he continues to build up the Church through his servant leader, Tim McCoy.
Mike Hickman
former Ingleside Membership Pastor
Every time I read Psalm 1, I think of Tim and give thanks to the Lord for the fruit he has produced for the kingdom in every season of life and ministry. Wren and I have been forever changed because of Tim’s godly leadership and passionate commitment to the gospel of Christ—and I know our story is echoed in the lives of everyone who has called Ingleside home. Congratulations to Tim and Beverly as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of his call to Ingleside as their Lead Pastor! May the Lord continue to show them and Ingleside his favor!

Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School
When I rst met Tim McCoy in 1981, he was an evangelist—and a good one. In 1983, I heard him preach memorable messages on David and Goliath and Revelation 3:14–22. In 1985, he led a particularly fruitful revival meeting in our church. Still, I thought he would make a great pastor due to his leadership skills and encouraging spirit. Happily, I was right. I did not think he could plant himself in one church for so long. Happily, I was wrong. I salute my old friend on this occasion, wishing him many more years of faithful service.
Kevin Ezell
President, North American Mission Board
It’s a privilege to add my voice to the many who are congratulating Tim and Beverly on 30 years of ministry at Ingleside. I am particularly grateful for how Tim has made evangelism and missions a priority through the years in Macon, throughout Georgia, across our nation, and beyond. Thank you for the faithful support of missions near and far. He has also contributed to Southern Baptist life in many signi cant ways through his service and leadership. May God continue to make Ingleside a lighthouse to the surrounding world, and may he bless Tim with many, many more years of faithful service.

When I rst met Tim, about 20 years ago, I was a young man who wasn’t quite sure how to follow Jesus. Tim taught me how to love and center my life on Christ, how to grow in sancti cation, how to lead others, and how to do all things with excellence. He showed me how to dream and envision disciple making in every context. For over 20 years, Tim has been a dear friend, loved pastor, respected mentor, and most of all, a brother in Christ!
Steve Mann
former Ingleside Facilities Manager
When contemplating the number of people touched by Tim’s love, for the glory of God, it’s immeasurable. He truly personi es the life Christ wants each one of us to live. His unwavering commitment to teaching God’s Word without compromise or apologies, but in love for all, has been a rock for the church. He has run the race, he has kept the faith, and no doubt he will nish well. He has been my hero for three decades.
Bruce Cleaveland
former Ingleside Setup Coordinator
Congratulations to Tim and Beverly for sharing with us these past 30 years! Becky and I are forever grateful that our two girls came to know Christ under Tim’s preaching of the gospel. As a family, we grew to know Christ better and experience his love for us through the seasons of life here. I frequently communicate to others of Tim’s outstanding leadership and refer to Ingleside as “a shining city on a hill.”
Many years ago, Tim introduced me to the reformed view of the doctrines of grace. I have been forever changed—changed by rediscovering this sovereign God who saved me and called me to repentance and faith. Over the years, Tim has patiently guided me through some dif cult subjects—subjects that always left me thinking for some time.
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13, ESV)
Thanks, Tim, for laying down your life for the sake of the gospel and for your friends!
Rob Maine
Pastor/Church Planter, Renaissance Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
When I think about Tim McCoy, a phrase comes to mind: humble presence. When you are in Tim’s presence, you feel like you are the only person in the room. He’s not looking over your shoulder for a better conversation. He’s not trying to impress you. He’s fully present and interested in you. Even more, his mindset is that of the Lord Jesus. Tim embodies C.S. Lewis’ observation of a humble man: “He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all,” because all Tim is thinking about is Christ, and Christ in you.
Josh Cook
Pastor/Church Planter, Dwell Church, Denver, Colorado
It is rare to nd a man who is a humble conduit for the Word of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is perhaps even more rare that that man would be a good husband and father. It is perhaps the rarest of all that such a man could faithfully, authentically, and virtuously lead the people of God for 30 years. Dr. McCoy is such a man and stands as an example and inspiration for me and many others.

IN HIS INFINITE WISDOM
by Bob and Jo Cronin
Wow! What an exhilarating 30 years at Ingleside Baptist Church. As we re ect back on this era, it seems like a continuous revival. Membership has continued to grow, as men, women, boys, and girls have confessed Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and been baptized to represent their new life. In addition, many have joined from other churches. It is not unusual for there to be three or more generations of families (grandparents, parents, grandchildren, and sometimes great-grandchildren) in attendance in worship services, Bible studies, and special events. This is surely a testimony to excellent sermons, concerts, seminars, and special guest speakers.
Even though Ingleside is a large church with almost 5,000 members, there still exists a closeness among the members. This family atmosphere is evident as one observes the activity in the Gathering Area, especially during special events such as Big Wednesday. People linger and visit with each other, and members notice and welcome people they do not know. Of course, this did not happen by chance. The Lord, in his in nite wisdom, brought Tim to Ingleside to provide the leadership needed to accomplish this. We have had the pleasure of maturing with Tim and Beverly as they grew from newlyweds to parents of two beautiful, godly daughters, Meredith and Molly, and then to empty-nesters. We frequently talk about them as our role model for the ideal Christian family. The McCoys are truly loved and appreciated.
Three truisms about Tim McCoy:
1. When you talk with Dr. McCoy, you learn something.
2. When you walk with Dr. McCoy, wear jogging shoes.
3. When challenging Dr. McCoy to a game, don’t make it basketball!
May the Lord continue to bless the McCoy family and their ministry. May the revival continue. The best is yet to come.
Bob Cronin has been a member of Ingleside since 1974. He is a Deacon and has served as an Overseer, Sunday Bible Study teacher, and on the Baptism Ministry team. Bob and his wife, Jo, have been married since 1964 and have two daughters, one son, and nine grandchildren. Both Bob and Jo are retired educators.

THE BLESSINGS OF A GREAT TEACHER
AND FRIEND
The Word. Truth and grace. For our good and God’s glory. Flourishing lives. Love. Hope. Excellence. These are words that remind us of the leadership and teaching of Tim McCoy for 30 years. From the beginning, Tim placed a high value on Scripture. Every Sunday we hear “Let’s worship through the Word together. Take your listening outline in hand and open your Bibles.” Tim has taught us to look through a scriptural lens at life and to ask on every issue “What does God’s Word say?”
Each morning, Tim invites the Ingleside family and beyond to join in a journey of reading God’s Word “A Chapter a Day.” As Tim often encourages, a relationship with Jesus, guided by Scripture, leads to lives that ourish. The Word gives clarity on what it means in practical waystowalkwiththeLord.Alifethat follows Christ will look different from the culture. One of Tim’s greatest
by Johnny Mitchell
gifts in teaching has been the balance between truth and grace found in the pages of Scripture. It is a hallmark of his teaching. He has encouraged listeners to be willing to examine the Word, to make changes, and to be obedient always for our good and God’s glory.
While the culture has rapidly changed over the last 30 years, Tim has reminded us that Jesus spoke clearly about important issues such as marriage and the sanctity of life. From Genesis to Revelation, God’s design leads to lives that ourish. The culture has pressured churches to no longer be moored to Scripture. Tim has consistently reminded followers of Christ that the Word of the Lord is right and true, and God is faithful in all his promises. On subjects declared by the culture to demand change, Tim has not wavered. He has consistently preached the good news of the gospel. Jesus came to rescue sinners
and to redeem and restore the lives of those who repent and believe to become fully devoted followers of Christ. Tim reminds us that God is love and that love should be the de ning characteristic of all who follow Jesus.
Tim always encourages us to take the long view; to stay in the game in our marriages and as parents; to pass on the baton of faith to the next generation. Tim continues to remind us that we have hope because God is able to do immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine. Because of the hope we have in Christ and according to the Word, yes, Tim, we know that the best is yet to come! The Ingleside family has been blessed for 30 years now because God brought Tim and Beverly to Macon and added the joy of Meredith and Molly along the way as part of God’s family here at Ingleside.
Johnny Mitchell has been a member of Ingleside since 1970. He and his wife, Lisa, have three children, John, James, and Mary Elaine, and they have all shared the blessing of sitting under Tim’s teaching and encouragement.

14 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF FAITHFUL MINISTRY
AN INTERVIEW WITH BEVERLY
Tim and Beverly were married on March 14, 1987. In this interview, Beverly re ects on the past 30 years as a pastor’s wife, a mother, and a committed member of Ingleside.

Many of us know you were raised in North Carolina. Talk about life growing up and how the Lord directed your path to Macon, Georgia.
I grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the Cotswold neighborhood, where I enjoyed walking to school and riding my bicycle everywhere I needed to go, including the local 7-Eleven, my dance school, the orthodontist, and elementary and junior high school. My parents blessed me with a Christian home, and I had a long legacy of faith on both sides for several generations. Their example of integrity, character, and a strong work ethic signi cantly impacted
my life. We were very involved and served at our church and formed long-lasting friendships there.
Following my graduation from Furman University, I moved back to Charlotte to work and plugged back in to my home church. One Sunday, a student from Southern Seminary, Tim McCoy, came to preach and ended up commuting back and forth for six months to ll an interim position. In God’s providence, Tim and I met and began a long distance romance. After we were married, I moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where Tim completed his Ph.D. studies at Southern while I worked at a law rm downtown to pay the bills. As

graduation approached, we began to pray for God to direct our path to the church he would have us serve. We never placed any conditions on the location but offered the Lord our lives anywhere he chose to use us. In God’s sovereignty, we connected with Ingleside Baptist Church, and in spite of our youth and inexperience (a signi cant hurdle for our search committee, I hear), Ingleside called us in August of 1989, and we moved to Macon to begin our ministry lives together. I was 26 years old, and Tim was 31.
Before you met Tim, did you think you would be the wife of a pastor? What blessings have you seen come from that calling?
ED USING THE GIFTS GOD HAS GIVEN ME
TO SERVE AT INGLESIDE THESE PAST 30 YEARS . . . . MUSIC HAS BEEN A SOURCE OF MUCH JOY AND A PRIMARY AREA OF
SERVIC”
E FOR ME.
Beverly sings at the dedication of the Children’s Building and Family Life Center in 1994
I did not have any idea that I would be in vocational ministry, let alone be a pastor’s wife. Nor did I have a clue as to the role of a pastor’s wife, and some who have been here for the last 30 years I’m sure would like to say a hearty “Amen!” I loved Tim and would have followed him over a cliff. So with very little thought or consideration for what I was signing up for, when Tim proposed, I said yes! God called Tim into ministry, so I happily jumped on board after we were married and have been all- in ever since.
God has blessed our obedience in moving to Macon and serving him in many ways. Speci cally, for me, he provided godly women through the years for me to emulate. So many precious faces come to mind, and the lessons I have learned from them about being a wife and mom and disciple. I’ve tucked away their advice and suggestions for many years and only wish I could start over now with all I’ve learned. I know everyone’s path is different, but for me, having only been a member of two churches—First Baptist Church, Charlotte, and Ingleside in Macon—has afforded me deep and lasting personal relationships for which I am grateful. I count these among my richest blessings.
16 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF FAITHFUL MINISTRY

You have two young adult daughters now, Meredith and Molly. How have you seen them grow as disciples across the years because of their involvement at Ingleside?
Meredith and Molly both repented and believed and were baptized at Ingleside as children. They enjoyed the blessing of being shepherded by people of faith from birth through adulthood. As they grew up, they had patient Weekday Preschool teachers, faithful Sunday Bible Study teachers, energetic Awana leaders, creative Vacation Bible School teachers, sports-minded Upward coaches and many others who taught them through the formative years of their lives. These godly people with servant hearts, several of whom have gone to be with the Lord, loved our girls and modeled for them what it meant to follow Christ. As adults, they are both connected to churches where they live and work and are growing in their relationships to Christ.
What advice do you have for parents striving to lead the next generation?
Nurture and give attention to your marriage relationship even when your kids are little. It’s foundational to your home.
Decide what the priorities are for your family, and make sure your weekly calendar re ects those.
Don’t succumb to the pressures of doing and being what other parents are doing and being.
Model at home and in your daily life the biblical values and habits you want your child to choose later as an adult.
Learn the love languages of your children, and make an effort to
demonstrate your love to them in their particular language.
Make memories together. Spending your dollars doing things together is more valuable than buying stuff! The memories and pictures taken last forever.
In what ways have you used your gifts to serve the body at Ingleside during the past 30 years? How have you and Tim served together?
Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 12 that there are different gifts, and each one is given for the common good in order to build up the body. Likewise, 1 Peter 4:10–11 (ESV) says, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glori ed through Jesus Christ.”
I have loved using the gifts God has given me to serve at Ingleside these past 30 years. Having taken piano lessons for many years and studying voice and piano in college, music has been a source of much joy and a primary area of service for me. This includes leading children’s choir, directing music at Vacation Bible School, and preparing musical presentations. For many years, I have enjoyed singing in adult choir and various ensembles, and I participated in our handbell ministry. Additionally, I felt called to serve in the age-group ministries that our girls were in as they grew up. So when they were young, I kept Babies and Creepers, taught four-year-olds in Sunday school, taught Awana, went to camp with middle schoolers, and led a ninth grade girls’ small group for several years. Currently, I am co- leading a TAG small group, which is a
mentoring ministry. Finally, and most importantly, I have had the privilege of serving Tim in a quiet “behind the scenes” kind of way for his very public calling to speak. It has been my joy to serve him and the Lord in this way. I cannot imagine public speaking, but I truly love serving and am energized by doing so.
As far as serving together, Tim and I have had the privilege of showing hospitality in our home to our staff and numerous guests who have come our way across the years. Our lives have been enriched and encouraged by all the missionaries, pastors, teachers, church planters, and friends we’ve had around our table.
Growing as a disciple is built into the DNA of Ingleside. What resources, books, or tools have you bene ted from personally across the years that you would recommend
to others?
As our girls were growing up, I read all the parenting books I could get my hands on! Some of my favorite authors were James Dobson, Kevin Leman, John Rosemond, Gary Smalley, Gary Chapman, Bob Barnes, Stormie Omartian, and Cynthia Tobias. I’ve participated in numerous women’s Bible studies and bene ted spiritually from these. However, the best learning has come from reading my Bible most every day. I have long loved the NIV84 Life Application Study Bible and the notes, and more recently, the ESV Study Bible and notes. The last three years reading “A Chapter a Day” along with our church family has encouraged me spiritually. Journaling and Scripture memory have been a decades-long practice for me, as well. As I’ve taught in TAG ministry, I have also grown in my understanding of God and his Word from reading Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. I nd it very

accessible to a person who doesn’t have a seminary degree, and I highly recommend it as a study resource.
What about missions involvement? “Going with the gospel” is one of the steps of our disciple-making process. How have you gone with the gospel both as a personal witness and with the church?
In the book of Colossians, the Bible says that we should “be wise in the way we act toward outsiders and make the most of every opportunity.” Being active in our community has provided lots of opportunities to share the love of Jesus. Whether as a room mom for the girls at school, or playing tennis at the community tennis center, or taking food to neighbors, or painting a house for Macon Impact—I’m always looking for a chance to talk to people one-on-one, invite them to our church, offer my prayers, and just be kind to people who are hurting and broken.
As far as overseas missions work, I lived overseas in college for a semester, but had never been on a mission trip until 2008. Ingleside has helped me grow in this area and given me the opportunity to serve in Peru, Indonesia, and Thailand. These trips have all been challenging and life- changing. Each time, I went with more experienced people who showed me the ropes. I’m so glad I went!
Aside from following Jesus and serving your church, what kind of hobbies or outside interests do you have?
I enjoy being active, playing tennis, and traveling to see new places. I especially love the mountains and go as often as I can. Right now, however, visiting family in three different states is where I usually end up going!

Across 30 years, you have participated in thousands of worship services, events, and fellowships. Do you have a few particular memories that bring a smile?
My mind is lled with ashbacks of so many fun memories! The whole thing makes me smile, because when we moved to Macon, Tim told me we would probably live here three to ve years max! We were married in 1987 and moved to Macon in 1989—we’ve been here for the majority of our married life! The Lord said, “I know the plans I have for you” and “many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it’s the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” I’m humbled and grateful that God’s plan for us was here at Ingleside. Over the last few months, I have had continuous ashbacks of people we’ve served with, many of whom are in heaven now.
I smile when...
I think about our choir in gold robes, our Christmas performances wearing tartan plaid cummerbunds over black skirts with starched white blouses, and Mitch Loftin standing on a box to lead us. I smile when I think about dinner on the grounds and dressing up for Old Fashioned Day in 1992. I smile when I remember Louise Magee coming over to get Meredith to cook and play at her house. I smile when I think about Harriet Newton calling us in Louisville. I had never heard someone speak with a southern accent like hers!

I remember Mr. Jim and Ms. Betty making chicken parmesan on Wednesday nights. I smile when I remember Ms. Ruth and her lovely Easter ower cross that the children helped decorate. I smile when I remember Jessica Glawson walking around the Fall Festival with helium balloons. I smile when I remember the Barnes property and how Ralph Newton had prayed for it for many years and how we almost built the new building somewhere else because we didn’t own the property. But then, God moved mountains and gave it to Ingleside. I smile when I remember repairing the roof over the Chapel and meeting in the Gym for worship for a while. Vicki Hinson led our choir, and we warmed up in the Aerobics Room!

I think about Tim and our building committee leaders walking around the construction site in hard hats and Meredith with her own hard hat following behind. I smile when I think about trips we took around the south to look at other worship centers before ours was built. I smile when I remember writing Scripture verses on the concrete oor of the Gathering Area. I smile when I think about Veada and Anderson, who served of cially as custodians and unof cially as consultants to Tim. I smile when I remember having our staff over for chili and getting on a bus to go caroling around town for Christmas.

TIM MCCOY – EXTRAORDINARY PASTOR, MENTOR, GIFTED LEADER, AND FRIEND
Ilove our pastor! Through our friendship and working together in a variety of ministries at Inglesideovertheyears,Thayerand I have come to greatly respect and love Tim and Beverly and their girls. Praise be to God for the blessing of Tim’s 30 years at Ingleside.
Tim is a captivating teacher. We came to Ingleside in 1995 at the suggestion of a dear friend, and the Lord immediately began using Tim to speak biblical truth into our entire family. I can still remember how our elementary-aged girls were enthralled and challenged by Tim’s sermons. I am particularly grateful for how Tim has in uenced my walk with the Lord. Through his teaching, his leadership, and by the way he lives his life—I have been challenged
by Carter Bates
and encouraged to a deeper, abiding devotion to Christ.
Tim is a gifted administrator. Through the privilege of serving on the Board of Overseers, I saw Tim’s gift of administration to develop a Spirit- lled staff, cast a futuristic vision, establish a strategic plan, and grow our membership. I am thankful for how God has used Tim’s gift of administration to develop our congregation and impact our community.
Tim is an enthusiastic supporter of “going with the gospel” through missions. He is not only a tremendous encourager, cheerleader, and strategic partner—but he is also an active participant in both domestic and international mission work. I am grateful for Tim’s decision to bring
Lisa Call to the Ingleside ministry team to expand the gospel outreach at Ingleside.
Lastly, Tim is authentic. Through spending time praying with Tim and others every Sunday morning before the services, I have gained an even greater appreciation for his genuine faith and authenticity. Tim genuinely loves and cares for the people God has called him to shepherd, without showing partiality or playing favorites.
Our family loves you and your beautiful girls, Tim. Thank you for playing such a large role in encouraging each of our walks with the Lord. We look forward to the next 30 years, as indeed “the best is yet to come!”
Carter Bates is an attorney in Macon. He is married to Thayer, and they have two daughters— Cissy (married to Tim) and Kenson (married to Tyler). Carter has been a member of Ingleside since 1995. He has served in a variety of capacities—Bible Study teacher, in the choir, on the Board of Overseers, as a Deacon, and in the Missions Ministry.

A LEGACY OF SERVANT LEADERSHIP
by Alex Correa
“It’s not about you.” These are some of the most famous opening words of a book. They set the tone for Rick Warren’s 2002 classic, The Purpose Driven Life, which has sold well over 30 million copies worldwide. As I considered Dr. McCoy’s life and work, these words came to mind. Accolades and attention have never been his desire. Celebrations like these will make him uncomfortable because they might draw attention away from his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Although there may be truth to that, the Bible instructs us that it is good to remember what the Lord has done through his servants, and it is good to give thanks. It’s never been about Dr. McCoy.
I feel there is plenty of false humility in this world, but you will not nd that in our brother and leader. James 3:13 (NIV) states, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” This balance between humility and wisdom, I feel, encapsulates Tim’s “good life.” You see that it is wisdom rst, then appropriate humility. Godly wisdom is re ected in an appropriate posture before God and others. This is the true servant leadership Tim exhibits. The fruit that his ministry has borne is evident already, but the harvest will be much greater into eternity!
Personally, my family and I will be forever grateful to Tim for his work in the Lord. We began our Ingleside journey in the fall of 2000 with a new town, new job, new ve-week-old baby, and no home church. The Lord brought us to Ingleside, where Tim’s in uence and teaching were re ected in excellence at every level. That ve-week-old is now completing her freshman year of college and headed to the mission eld this summer for seven weeks. Two other children have come along, and both have been baptized into Christ at Ingleside. “Thank you” is wholly inadequate.
One non-coincidence in God’s sovereign plan is that Tim and I both spent some of our formative years in Metairie, Louisiana. In fact, our middle schools were on the same street. You turned right on Elise Avenue to go to his school and left to go to mine. The main difference in our growing up is that I had a much better jump shot on the basketball court! I can’t lie in a church magazine, but seriously, basketball and Louisiana culture were part of our stories. I remember asking Tim to lunch when we rst visited Ingleside. I had lots of spiritual questions, as I was new to my faith in many ways. He was gracious in answering these, and we immediately made a connection, con rming that Ingleside was the place I needed to bring my young family to worship and grow. It was a decision I will always be thankful to have made. Another memory I will always cherish was more recent, when my wife and I were blessed to travel to Israel with our church family and Tim. He led well, as you would expect, but more than that, his love for God’s Word and for his land was so evident. He made it special for us and really awakened our appreciation for the physical place of our Savior’s life and eventual return.
I would say that our whole church body and community are extremely fortunate to have bene ted from our pastor’s 30 years of service and work. But to steal his line: “The best is yet to come!”
Alex Correa is a physician in Macon. His wife is Shay, and they have three children who have grown up at Ingleside: Evan, Andrew, and Hollis. He has been a member of Ingleside since 2001 and has served in various areas, including Student Ministries, Missions Ministry, Men’s Hike Ministry, and on the Board of Overseers.

TOO YOUNG?
by Wade McCurry
No one in 1989 thought we would hire a 31-year-old pastor. After hearing Tim’s sermon in view of being called, the church was awed by how this young guy could preach! His age was no longer a concern. Even more impressed by Tim was the of cial pastoral search committee! They not only heard him preach but were able to enjoy more time listening to and speaking with Tim. Quickly, they understood the Lord had sent Ingleside a special young man. While there were many on the pastoral search committee who were in their younger years at the time, most, if not all, envisioned a pastor older than themselves. After spending time with Tim, all were eager to recommend this younger pastor, mature and wise beyond his years.
Tim hit the ground running: preaching, teaching, leading, and listening. The Lord provides the perfect timing, as shown by Tim’s suggestions for new paths and new perspectives for our church. It was not long before we all knew we were not dealing with a novice or someone the senior church leadership had to guide. This 31-year-old led his rst church as if he had the wisdom of one who had held several pastorates. We realized the skill and wisdom used to guide this mature
22 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF FAITHFUL MINISTRY

congregation was that of the God of the ages. The same wisdom entrusted to our biblical forefathers was also leading Tim. His main goal, whether we were engaged in a new study or looking with a long range, was to glorify the Father—always. Anything that was preached, taught, or taken to the next level for consideration was rst biblical. A uni ed church body that ultimately glori es the Father was another goal of Tim’s. In those early years, we studied Blackaby’s Experiencing God. We learned that Ingleside Baptist Church had a purpose, every member had spiritual gifts, and we all were called to minister to and disciple others. We successfully tackled a capital project which led to our Preschool and Children’s Building with a Multi-Purpose Gym. Our Missions Ministry blossomed, and we began to realize what a Bible-based, uni ed body for Christ could look like.
In 1998, Tim led our church in a major change to our by-laws. We implemented a new governance that led to a more uni ed method of leadership. As a result, major ministry opportunities and unprecedented growth emerged.
The trust and love between Tim and this congregation had grown tremendously in ten years. Together, trust and love were the foundation of our church’s leap of faith into commercial real estate acquisition. Tim led us to purchase a shopping center and of ce complex adjacent to our church property. These real estate purchases led to the acquisition of property previously unavailable to us and ultimately to construction of a new 1,700- seat auditorium and additional Sunday Bible Study and of ce space. It worked! Numbers of people began experiencing new life with Christ at Ingleside because we added many ministry opportunities in our neighborhood and across the globe.
Over the years, I have experienced Tim’s company outside the church in activities such as golf outings, parties, and weddings. Tim is the same in a casual setting as in
the pulpit. He is curious about your family, personal circumstances, and how you are experiencing life at that time. He likes to laugh, loves to win, and enjoys fellowship with everyone. He is a ne companion. If the circumstances allow, he is always looking for an opportunity to get to know someone better. Tim always searches for an opening to share Christ. Once, when we were riding together in a golf cart, he asked if I would mind if he put his golf clubs on another cart. I knew that the Lord, even during recreation, was leading Tim to talk to this man in a different golf cart.
The same God of the ages is continuing to guide this well-seasoned pastor in the twilight of his career. We should not expect less intensity or less involvement from Tim. He will continue to preach, teach, and lead us, as God leads him, into our next chapter. I have heard him say often, “Inglesiders today stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.” I know Tim will want to make sure our shoulders are in place and ready to support those who come after us. Even as we celebrate this illustrious 30-year journey, I am sure he believes, as he often says, “The best is yet to come.” We have been so blessed that God led Tim and Beverly to Ingleside to “do life” with our church family. It has been my pleasure to share these thoughts and remembrances.
Oswald Chambers says, “We should be on the way to Heaven with a little bit of Heaven on the way.” Sally and I believe that our journey with Tim re ects that path and experience. Thank you, Pastor. Thank you, friend. Thank you, Tim!
Wade and Sally McCurry have been active members of Ingleside since 1982. They have three children and ve grandchildren. Wade has taught Bible Study for students and adults. He served on Tim’s rst Deacon Board from 1989‐1992. He served as the last Chairman of Deacons and the rst Overseer Board Chairman when the present church governance was adopted in 1998. He completes his third term on the Overseer Board in September 2019.

THE GOSPEL...

24 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF FAITHFUL MINISTRY
By Lisa Call

THIS STRONG COM“MITMENT TO WORLD MISSIONS LAID A FOUNDATION FOR THE EVER-DEEPENING CONCERN OF THE CHURCH TO REACH THE WHOLE WORLD WITH THE W”HOLE GOSPEL.
From the beginning of First Trips we agreed. Brad and I did an advance Ingleside’s history, a trip in February 1996, and later that
commitment to missions has been a cornerstone. In fact, one of the rst things that happened after Ingleside’s Charter Sunday on December 23, 1951, was the organization of the Women’s Missionary Society (later called WMU). “This strong commitment to world missions laid a foundation for the ever-deepening concern of the Church to reach the whole world with the whole gospel.”1 In its early years, Ingleside provided homes for furloughing missionaries, collected Mission Action items to help people locally and around the United States, and had an active WMU group who regularly prayed for missionaries. There were individual members who went on mission trips independently, the youth choir went on choir tours, and in the late 1980s and early 90s, Ingleside gave 25% of undesignated receipts to missions. However, in November 1994, Tim presented his vision for our church at the annual Deacon Retreat, and it was there that he shared his hope and plan to see an expansion of Ingleside’s Missions Ministry.
The next year, Jimmy Hinson led Ingleside’s rst international mission trip to Iquitos, Peru. Dr. McCoy met with the team ahead of time and taught them how to prepare a sermon, as they would likely have opportunities to preach. The team of 14 worked with International Mission Board missionary Clif Forrester, who had furloughed in Macon and had connections to Ingleside. They did medical clinics and construction projects. When the team returned, they took a Sunday evening worship service to share about their mission trip. At the end of the service, Dr. McCoy invited anyone interested in being more involved in missions to come forward, and another Hinson responded.
Ben Hinson recalls, “I said, ‘I’ll do anything you want me to do for missions,’ and the next morning I was having breakfast with Tim and Brad Wilson at Cracker Barrel. We already knew Dr. Paul and Dana Seale in Venezuela, and had a desire to go there and work with them. Tim challenged us to lead the efforts, and
spring, we led two 12–person teams to the mountains of Venezuela to reach the Yukpa Indian people.” The team prepared spiritually by praying together, and prepared physically by meeting at Ben Hinson’s home and walking up and down the hills of Lokchapee every week. When they arrived in Venezuela, they learned the rst lessons about how sometimes mission trips don’t go according to plan, but they came back with the “mission bug” and couldn’t wait to return. Over the next several years, Ingleside sent multiple teams to Venezuela to share the gospel, lead medical clinics, and do various types of construction. Teams completed water projects under the leadership of Bobby Gore. “The water projects are still working. The churches are still there. So the work we did continues on,” said Bobby.2 Using volunteer teams was a signi cant part of Dr. Seale’s strategy for reaching the Yukpa, and Paul reports that, as a result, there were probably 18–19 Yukpa villages that had clean water to drink.

The Late 90s
As Dr. McCoy’s designated lay leader for Ingleside’s missions program, Ben Hinson was instrumental in developing systems and procedures for mission trips. He created the rst Ingleside missions application, led team meetings, booked airline tickets, and made all the logistical arrangements for volunteers. Scores of Inglesiders began saying “yes” to missions, and the Lord continued to grow his worldwide kingdom. Ingleside sent mission teams to other U.S. states, Mexico, and Romania, while remaining focused on the Yukpa people of Venezuela and our partnership with Dr. Paul and Dana Seale. Pastor Tim also made it a point to give individual mission volunteers the opportunity to share with the congregation upon return, and he planned annual worship services with a missions emphasis to keep the Great Commission at the forefront. Dr. McCoy was a consistent advocate for missions, and even served on the Board of Trustees of the International Mission Board from 1994 to 2001, chairing it during
2000 and 2001. During these years, several members applied for full-time missionary service with the International Mission Board, including Amy Horachek, Jim and Sherry Neal, and me.
2000s and Indonesia
In Dr. McCoy’s role as an IMB Trustee, he was asked to go on a mission trip to Surabaya, Indonesia, to lead a spiritual renewal retreat for missionaries on the islands of Java and Sumatra. God put the team together, and Ben Hinson made all of their arrangements, leading the team of 17 to the other side of the world in February 2000. Hinson said he remembers a strong partnership with Dr. McCoy on this team. “One of the greatest lessons I learned was from watching Tim be a regular team member as far as travel and logistics. Most people would never imagine that the Lead Pastor would be humble enough to let others lead, but that’s how Tim is.” Ben led another team with Dr. McCoy to Indonesia in 2004 to facilitate a similar conference, and Dr. McCoy returned in 2008 on a third trip— this time to the island of Sumatra. Missionaries in Indonesia reported for years to come that their favorite, most memorable meetings were the ones in 2000, 2004, and 2008 when Tim was the speaker, Greg Goforth led the musical worship, and Ingleside volunteers cared for the missionary children. Dr. McCoy’s spiritual gift of teaching the Scripture has truly been an encouragement to people both in Macon and across the globe!
The Huaylas Quechua
In 2002, Carter Bates was recruited to go on an exploratory trip to the Andes Mountains in Peru. Carter said yes after watching a convincing

parable mini-movie called “The Harvest,” and he joined Matt Nelson, Ben and Vicki Hinson, and two others to determine if this would be a good mission project for Ingleside’s high school students. Carter recollects, “It was eye-opening and dif cult, and we came back saying ‘there’s no way we want to send students up this mountain,’ but our hearts were with those people. We believed God was working there, and we wanted to be a part of that.” It just needed to be an adult-oriented mission trip. In November of that same year, Carter returned to Macaté, Peru, on an of cial vision trip to scout out the land. Carter says, “I’ll never forget the day we were praying together in the hostel, and asking the Lord to show us what to do, and if he was calling us to be involved there. The doorbell started ringing and wouldn’t stop. The owner never answered the door, so when we were nished praying, we went to answer the door, and there was a group of teachers from the school there who were imploring us to please come back to Macaté.” There was the answer. The team returned home to Macon and met with Dr. McCoy about adopting the

Huaylas Quechua (HQ) people of the Andes Mountains. Carter attended IMB Strategy Coordinator training in Lima, and from there began planning two to three mission trips per year to Macaté. Ingleside made a commitment to engage the HQ people with the gospel and try to plant new churches among them. “We were willing to try all sorts of methods and did evangelism and discipleship on every trip.”
During these years, the Lord worked in marvelous ways to meet needs in his timing. Carter Bates was having lunch with Ben Hinson one Friday and shared that he felt we needed someone on the ground there full- time to help with communication and continuity. The next Tuesday, Ben’s son, Shae, came home from college and told his parents that God was leading him to be a missionary to Peru. He graduated from college and moved to Macaté for 20 months. The Lord moved Carter to begin working in other areas where Huaylas Quechua people lived, and over time, Ingleside had relationships in three different areas. Ingleside engaged the Huaylas Quechua from 2002 to 2016, and in those years, we saw churches grow, disciples made, and the New Testament translated into the HQ language. We also provided seminary training for 12 pastors through a ministry called Training Pastors International. Each of those Peruvian brothers graduated from seminary with the skills and passion to carry on the Lord’s work. John Bartuska, David Foil, Lee Robinson, and Wesley Wilson were some of the other frequent team leaders who were involved in leading this partnership.

Disaster Relief
Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage to the Gulf area of the United States in August 2005, and Ingleside responded in a huge way. Many church members had family members who were affected by the disaster, and the Lord provided aid to them through others in the body of Christ here. Ingleside members gave around $45,000 to help people in need, and Ben Hinson organized over 100 people to go on weekend mission trips to Mississippi throughout the fall.
Another major calamitous event happened in January 2010, with a 7.0 earthquake in Haiti. Ingleside partnered with Georgia Baptists to provide Buckets of Hope. Dr. McCoy encouraged families to ll a bucket with rice, beans, and other foods to feed a Haitian family for a week, and Inglesiders provided 633 Buckets of Hope! Our Annex became the collection point for the whole state of Georgia, and over 150 volunteers donated their time and skills to unload, package, and reload over 16,000 buckets for Haitian survivors.
Ingleside has responded again and again, sending aid and volunteer teams to North and South Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Haiti, Nepal, and Puerto Rico over the years when natural disasters have occurred. It is a blessing to see the body of Christ work together to help others in Jesus’ name, and we are grateful for strategic partnerships with Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief, Send Relief (North American Mission Board), and Baptist Global Response (International Mission Board).
Church Planting
In 2006, a North American Mission Board church planter contacted Tim

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A GREAT COMM”ISSION PASTOR.
Jerry Rankin, President Emeritus International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention
to ask if we might begin partnering with him to start a new church in Manhattan, New York City. Aaron Coe had known Tim at a previous church and wanted his help to plant The Gallery Church. Ingleside committed to support The Gallery Church nancially as well as to send volunteer teams over the next three years. The Lord grew the church, and it continues to exist in the Chelsea area of New York City today.
When that partnership concluded, we began to search for another planter to support, and the Lord led us to Rob Maine. Rob and his wife Lauren were moving from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to start Renaissance Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From 2013 to 2017, we enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the Maines and Renaissance Church and sent six teams to serve alongside them in ministry. Renaissance Church started with a handful of people worshiping in Rob and Lauren’s apartment, and now they have a regular attendance of over 200 people!
We also wanted to help a church
plant that would be a little closer to home, and the Lord connected us to Matt Dye and M28 Church. Ingleside members David and Gina Foil moved to the Midtown area of Atlanta and began to worship with this new church that was just getting started on Matt Dye’s back porch. We began supporting M28 Church in March 2014 and sent a number of teams to help on weekend mission trips to Midtown. We’ve even seen a few other Inglesiders move to the Midtown area and join with M28.
Patrick Grant and Josh Cook are two men who have Ingleside ties, and the Lord called them both to plant churches in Portland (Grant) and Denver (Cook). Josh and Sarah Cook moved to Denver in 2016 to plant Dwell Church. Josh and Sarah attended Ingleside while they were students at Mercer, and both served as interns on our team. Patrick and Jennifer Grant moved to Portland along with their six children in 2017, and they are planting Woodstock Community Church. Patrick attended Ingleside with his family growing up and met Jennifer in the Young Adult ministry. They served in a variety of roles in our church before moving to attend seminary in 2014.

We currently have partnerships with each of these churches and support them nanciallyandbysending volunteer teams to them throughout the year.
Making Disciples...Here, There, and Everywhere
In Acts 1:8 (ESV), Jesus said, “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” At Ingleside, that is our strategy. We want to be witnesses for Jesus right here in Macon where we live, so we offer a monthly Missions Orientation where our members can learn how to share their faith. We also host Macon Impact, a week-long emphasis on serving in our community when Inglesiders will have opportunities to go with the gospel locally. We want to be witnesses for Jesus in the state
of Georgia and in North America, so we help start new churches in underserved areas, and we collaborate with the Georgia Baptist Mission Board and the North American Mission Board. Also, we want to be witnesses for Jesus throughout the world. We do that through giving and going on mission trips through the auspices of the International Mission Board. Over the last 12 years, we have hosted our Acts 1:8 Weekend Missions Conference to highlight these partnerships and give us the chance to hear rst-hand reports of how God is expanding his kingdom throughout the world. Acts 1:8 Weekend is an exciting, inspiring time of challenge, and we give thanks that hundreds of Inglesiders have participated since our rst missions conference in November 2008.
Dr. Paul Seale says, “It’s been really exciting for us to see Dr. McCoy’s visiontohaveasmanyInglesiders as possible be involved in overseas missions. When we rst came to Ingleside, people looked at us like we were crazy when we said we were going to be moving and that I wanted to be a missionary doctor. But contrast that to what a strong missions vision people have now. It’s just a part of life at Ingleside. I’m really grateful for Dr. McCoy being a strong supporter of missions. It’s a part of our identity as a church, and that’s a beautiful thing!” We couldn’t agree more.
Lisa Call has been the Missions Minister at Ingleside since 2008. Prior to that, she served as a missionary with the International Mission Board in Southeast Asia. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

THREE DECADES OF
CONGREGATIONAL CARE
by Nina Terrell
In the spring of 1991, within a couple of years after Dr. Tim McCoy came to Ingleside as Pastor, Duane McDaniel, Associate Pastor, organized a Congregational Care Outreach Ministry on Mondays. The purpose was and still is to visit the homebound, the sick, and others needing encouragement.
Small loaves of bread were used for the rst year or so. Volunteers gathered for prayer before visiting. It was eventually decided that the owers from the Sunday worship service could be divided into vases to be delivered, and they were used for many years.
When visits were made in the afternoon, members returned for a light supper with some going out afterward. This ministry continued when Duane McDaniel moved in 1998, and Mike Hickman became the Membership Pastor. Additional volunteer members joined along the way, and the ower ministry continued. Mike moved to Tennessee
in 2004. Mark Hudgins came in February 2005, and owers were still used for a while. Eventually, cookies, baked by the church Food Service Team, became the new choice for outreach. The owers are still used in the Fellowship Hall.
As the church membership has grown, so has the Congregational Care Outreach ministry team. The group continues to meet at 1:30 p.m. on Mondays to pray for the requests on the church prayer list and take assignments to go out to visit members in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, patients in recovery, as well as those who are homebound. Cookies continue to be the favorite item, and sacks with Ingleside’s logo are recognized and appreciated by the recipients.
Appropriate sympathy notes continue to be hand-written and mailed, and the basic instruction for this outreach team is still to listen, encourage, and pray, just as it was in the beginning.
Nina Terrell is married to Dean, and they have been members of Ingleside since 1959. She has continued to be active in the weekly Congregational Care Outreach since its beginning.

FROM OUR FAMILY
TO YOURS, WITH
GRATITUDE
The Bass Family
Charles Bass has served as a Deacon, Overseer, choir member, and Bible Study and Small Group leader for college students through adults. Vicki Bass has served as a Preschool Teacher, the rst Bookstore and Coffee Shop Ministry Coordinator, construction and design team member, and Bible Study leader for young adult women. Charles and Vicki have been members of Ingleside since 1984. Their two children, Jonathan and Kristina, were active in the Children’s, Music, and Student Ministries from 1984 until they entered college.

When Tim accepted the call to become our pastor, I distinctly recall a member of the search committee urging me not to be deterred by his youth. Though not a large congregation at this time, we were operating programs of suf cient complexity to warrant having a leader with signi cant pastoral experience. Quickly, Tim displayed masterful handling of leadership, communication, and visionary teaching that seemed more indicative of a seasoned pastor. He deftly explained a plan for change—adding new services and times for Bible study, expanded parking, and new construction—in such detail and clarity that everyone was persuaded that the potential rewards of the effort clearly outweighed the risks. While his leadership in these respects shored up my con dence in him and also the church’s prospects for continued spiritual health, his preaching, excellent both in faithfulness to the Word and applicability to contemporary life, guaranteed a refreshing reinforcement of the impact God was having on me over time. His desire to see the church grow, I learned, is founded on a deep conviction that having greater numbers participating with us in worship would result in more people coming to saving faith in Christ. This desire has always been his foremost priority. More than any other man I know personally, Tim has exhibited a willingness to let his abilities be used to maximize his service to the Lord.

As I re ect on Tim’s 30-year tenure, I am reminded of how his life and work exemplify the truths he teaches. From the earliest days of committees, staff meetings, and building and construction teams, Tim led us with extraordinary integrity, kindness, and vision. I am personally grateful for how he helped me develop as a lay leader through observation of his leadership style. Astutely skilled in asking questions, listening attentively, and effectively communicating biblically-based truths, he helped shape our church to become a forward-thinking, mission-focused body. His vision to incorporate a bookstore and coffee shop in our new worship center area enabled us to connect signi cantly with others over a book or latte.
I once read that “a church that nds a pastor with a well-prepared wife nds a hidden treasure they were not even seeking.” Ingleside Baptist Church found not only a remarkable pastor, Bible scholar, and leader in Tim, but also a pastor’s wife in Beverly who has faithfully loved Jesus, her husband, their daughters, and our church.
Tim and Beverly have offered to us a model for a well-ordered life—consistent, contented, prayerful, and faithful—a tremendous gift to us all.

I was a teenager when Dr. McCoy rst came to Ingleside, and I still remember his rst visit to my parents’ home 30 years ago. We played pool in our basement. He was quite good and had a competitive streak! He had a passion for Christ and a deep knowledge of his teachings, but also a gift for conveying them in compelling terms that were easy to understand. In the years that followed, I came to know Dr. McCoy as a spiritual leader who walked the walk as narrowly as any I have ever known. I knew that if I took a question to him, the answer I received would be rmly based in his earnest interpretation of the Bible. I am very grateful for the example Dr. McCoy provided, and I will carry it with me always.
Jonathan Bass, Burlingame, California
I was 12 years old when the McCoys came to Ingleside. I am now older than they were when they joined our congregation—a fact that gives me a unique perspective when returning to the memory of that time. They entered into a leadership role as a young couple with much integrity and strength of character. I have vivid memories of an expectant Beverly on stage leading in worship through music. Beverly made pregnancy and motherhood look easy. I took notice of her talent, calm, and poise and Dr. McCoy’s consistency and quiet con dence. As I gained maturity, I had the privilege of being one of their girls’ babysitters and participating in some of Meredith’s and Molly’s birthday celebrations. Again, I witnessed the same poise and calm and Beverly’s gentleness as a mother. Now that I know the challenges of raising two girls, I strive for the same balance of love and guidance that I witnessed in the McCoy home. I pray for adult role models to nurture my girls in the way they both nurtured me.
Thank you, Tim and Beverly, for being a part of the faith community who encouraged and prayed for me in my youth and into adulthood.

COFFEE, BOOKS, AND JESUS
INGLESIDE’S BOOKSTORE AND CAFÉ MINISTRY
By Rebekah Rainer
Over the last 15 years, Ingleside’s Bookstore and Café Ministry has become an integral part of the mission and ministry of Ingleside. Located in the heart of the church, near the Worship Center, this ministry helps provide a warm welcome to the thousands of people who walk through Ingleside’s doors each week.
Our Café serves up delicious beverages, including specialty coffees and teas, and provides space for meetings, prayer, and study, while our Bookstore connects customers with excellent biblical resources to help equip them as they grow in their walk with Christ.
Our vibrant team of 35–40 volunteers serves in the Bookstore and Café each week, helping customers, making lattes, stocking shelves, and everything in between. We are so grateful for the ministry- minded, hardworking, committed people that the Lord has brought to our team! One of our amazing volunteers is retired educator, Sally McCurry. Sally has served faithfully in the Bookstore since its inception— for over 15 years! When asked what
she enjoys most about serving, Sally responded, “I’m always conscious that many who enter the Bookstore may actually just be seeking a warm smile and conversation with someone. They may not be there to purchase anything. They may just need to feel the love of Jesus from someone, and I enjoy having the opportunity to show that to them.”
As Sally so beautifully pointed out, one of our main goals in the Bookstore and Café Ministry is to ensure that everyone feels warmly welcomed and connected at Ingleside. Romans 15:7 (ESV) says, “Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” We love using our setting to make sure that everyone who walks through our doors knows how truly welcome they are at Ingleside!
The Café
It seems like there is a great little coffee shop on almost every street corner these days, but back in 2004, when the doors to our Café opened, that was not the case. The forward-thinking vision of our pastor, Tim McCoy, helped blaze the

I LOVE COMING“TO THE INGLESIDE BOOKSTORE AND CAFÉ BECAUSE OF THE WARM ATMOSPHERE AND FRIENDLY PEOPLE. YOU DON’T ALWAYS COME IN FOR A BOOK OR A COFFEE, BUT SOMETIMES (UNKNOWINGLY) FOR A CONVERSATION AND A WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT. THE LIKE- MINDED STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS WHO WORK THERE OFFER A SAFE PLACE TO HANG OUT AND A LISTENING EAR THAT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. THEY ARE ALSO REALLY GOOD AT FINDING JUST THE RIGHT RESOURCE, GIFT, AND CARD FOR EVERY SITUATION OR SPEC”IAL EVENT.

trail in creating a unique space for our members, guests, and staff to connect with others.
Our coffee shop has grown exponentially over the last 15 years. Each week, hundreds of people—some of whom are not Ingleside members—stop by for a cup of coffee. We love having the opportunity to invite these guests to join us for services on Sunday, or for special events like our Christmas presentations. We’ve heard story after story across the years of people whose initial connection with Ingleside was the Bookstore or Café who are now committed members of our body.
Bookstore Ministry Assistant Marcia Robbins recalls a time several years ago when we would often go days without turning on the espresso machine because we did not have any customers in the coffee shop. Now, several years later, not only do we make numerous beverages every day, but we have also grown to the point of adding a second espresso machine! During any given week at Ingleside, our coffee shop is utilized for meetings, or just a quiet space to come read and study God’s Word. Small groups regularly meet outside
on our patio, and friends gather to share conversation over delicious cups of coffee or tea.
The Bookstore
In the Bookstore, our team loves helping our guests nd just the right book or gift, but one of our favorite things to do is help someone nd a Bible. The ESV Study Bible is our best- selling Bible. Highly recommended by Dr. McCoy, this Bible is a fantastic resource that helps many deepen their knowledge of God’s Word through in-depth commentary and articles. This one resource is like having a small theological library at your ngertips.
Our shelves are full of great resources recommended by our pastors and leaders, ranging in topics from marriage and parenting, to how to share the gospel, and ways to grow in your faith. We even have an entire section of the store devoted to highlighting the “Church and Home” program, Ingleside’s cradle-to-college path of discipleship for families. This section of the store provides easy access to wonderful, top resources for each age group recommended by our Next Generation Ministry leaders.
Our Ingleside staff also loves knowing that they have us as a resource right at their ngertips. Melinda Cook, Missions Ministry Assistant, recently shared the following story.
“I love having the Café and Bookstore on campus. I have gone there for refreshment for myself many times. Sometimes that means getting something to drink, shoppping, or just stopping to say hello to our always- welcoming Bookstore employees. Recently, I was able to see another important need that our Bookstore meets. On my way out after a very busy day, I met someone who shared with me that they were having a hard time. We talked for a while, and in the course of the conversation, I remembered a book that I loved and recommended it to them. As we were talking about the book, it dawned on me that I could actually get the book into their hands that very moment. It was so nice to have that resource and be able to send someone home, not with just a suggestion, but with a tool for spiritual encouragement and growth.”
Special Events
Across the years, we have hosted numerous special events aimed

at outreach, spiritual growth, and fellowship, such as book signings, wreath-makingworkshops,Preschool Summer Story-Time, and book clubs. Vicki Bass hosted a popular weekly prayer breakfast for men called The Big Boys Biscuit Bonanza during her time leading the ministry, and previous manager Michael Koiner led an event called After Work Perk that included specialty desserts and a time of musical worship on the patio. Our recent addition of Bible Art Journaling Classes has been a huge hit with church members as well as guests from our community. Over the course of the last two years, we have had over 300 people join us for our classes as we learn ways to connect creativity with our study and understanding of God’s Word.
Support for Ministry
Our Bookstore and Café Ministry also serves as a support for other ministry areas in our church. We partner with everyone from Discipleship Ministry to our Next Generation Team when they need resource tables at conferences or special events. We offer extended store hours for events like College Study Space and the multiple bridge events we host on our campus
each year, such as graduations and concerts, to help ensure a warm welcome to our guests. We provide coffee and hot chocolate for the Preschool Ministry’s annual Parent Appreciation event, as well as for meetings and classes. Of course, we also supply the dozens of Krispy Kreme doughnuts found across our campus on Sunday mornings, delivered hot and fresh each week by one of our most faithful behind- the-scenes volunteers, Alan Fite.
What You’ll Find on Our Shelves
Sure, we have the latest popular resources, like Joanna Gaines’ newest titles, Louie Giglio’s latest book, and Lauren Daigle’s most recent album, but we also have some special resources that you won’t nd just anywhere. Our shelves are full of fantastic resources recommended by our pastors. So whether you’re looking for a book on marriage or parenting, or a book to encourage a friend, you can count on us to point you to a quality resource that will help meet your need.
Our carefully curated gift section has everything from baby and wedding gifts, to jewelry and home décor,
or that perfect little something you need to encourage a family member or friend. Our guests often tell us that they love knowing they can stop by for the perfect card or gift whenever they are at church without having to make a special trip to another store.
The original goal was for the Bookstore and Cafè to enrich the fellowship dimensions of the church, while providing resources to empower disciple making. That goal still rings true today, louder than ever!
Rebekah Rainer has served as Ingleside’s Bookstore Ministry Coordinator since 2011. Originally from Alabama, Rebekah moved to Macon to attend Mercer University and graduated in 2004 with a degree in Christianity and a minor in Business Administration. Rebekah is married to Jonathan and has a precious one‐year‐old son named Jack.

GUIDED BY CAPABLE HANDS
by Helen Glawson
It was a memorable moment on a day in 2003. Several of us in the church of ce were delighted when Dr. McCoy offered to take us to see a work-in-progress that would be our new Worship Center.
As our group entered from the back center, I was immediately shocked (and awed!) by the vast, empty, “cavern-like” space that would soon be ready to accommodate many more worshipers and events. It was a vivid picture of invitation, challenge, and gratitude.
It has often been stated that for truly successful ventures, clear vision must precede action. Dr. McCoy has had that vision—grounded in the Lord’s will and purpose. It has led us in the acquisition and building of facilities to accommodate needed programs and activities.
He has also guided us through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. One member described his sermons as having “staying power.” Personally, I can attest to that! His words of encouragement don’t lie dormant and forgotten, but are often remembered and surface in life’s challenging times.
It was 37 years ago that my family and I joined hearts and hands with other worshipers and became members of Ingleside. We have been taught, challenged, encouraged, and greatly blessed. Thank you, Dr. McCoy.
Helen Glawson was a member of Ingleside from 1982 until she passed away on July 23, 2019, at the age of 94. Her areas of service included working as the Financial Secretary, singing in the choir, and teaching Bible Study. She had three children, four grandchildren,
and seven great‐grandchildren.
