Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is the statement adopted by the second
continental congress, which announced the 13 original colonies as independent.
It was written in Philadelphia on July 1st, 1776, and officially declared on July
2nd, 1776. It declared the 13 original colonies as “free” from British rule. It was
drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
Connecticut Compromise
The Connecticut compromise is an agreement that large and small states can
be reached during the continental convention of 1787. The people that supported
the connecticut compromise was the senate and the house of representative.
It was in Connecticut at July 16th, 1787. Connecticut compromise was to define
the legislative structure and representation that each state would have under
the United States.
Separation of Powers
The Separation of Powers was a political doctrine that was originally found in
the writings Montesquieu in The Spirit of the Laws. It is an act of vesting the
legislative, executive, and judicial powers of government. The separation of
Powers took place in 1748 to prevent abuse of power between the three
branches of government.
Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was the written document that established the
functions of the national government of the US after breaking away from
Britain. It was written by the continental congress, and it was signed in
Maryland and approved in Philadelphia, it was on March 1st,1781. It was given to
the colonies for a sense of unified government.
3 Branches of Government
Legislative- Made up of the congress and senate. They make the laws
Executive- Made up of the president and vice president. They make laws
official, or veto.
Judicial- Made up of the supreme court. They explain the laws under the
constitution.
Three Fifths Compromise-Constitutional
Convention-Virginia Plan- Ratification
It was about the population of slaves that would be counted as three-fifths in
total when apportioning Representative, James Wilson and Roger Sherman
signed for it to be approved. It was from the southern states and those from
the northern states, it was in the constitutional convention of 1787. The
three-fifths compromise was how to count slaves to split the delegates into
two groups.
Sovereignty
Sovereignty is modern nation of political authority, senator Stephen A. Douglas
wrote the popular sovereignty. It was in Michigan during the election of 1848,
to describe a highly controversial approach to slavery in the territories as
propounded by senator Stephen A. Douglas.
Federalists
A federalist is a person who advocates or supports a system of government in
which several states unite under a central authority. Alexander Hamilton, John
Adams, and John Jay, were federalists in 1787. The federalist party was the first
American political party.
Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights comprises the first 10 amendments to the United States
constitution. They were written by James Madison, and approved on September
25th, 1789, and were ratified on December 15th, 1791. The Bill of Rights lists
specific prohibitions on government power.
Amendments
An amendments is a change or addition to a legal or statutory document. They
were written by James Madison, submitted to the states on September 25th, 1789,
and adopted on December 15th, 1791. They were written to assemble the right of
the people and to petition the government for redress of grievances.
