27MAR EASTER SUNDAY
2016

SEASON OF LENT 2016

From the pastor’s heart

T he time honored tradition for Christians in Lent has been to let go of a particular sin or bad
habit or distracting element in one’s life that may serve to cause friction or distance in one’s
relationship with God. Another emerging tradition is taking upon oneself a new practice
of spiritual nurture or learning or discovery that may serve to draw one into a closer relationship
with God. Over the seasons of Lent I’ve read poetry (Mary Oliver and Wendell Berry), explored
contemplative/centering prayer and this year an introduction to mosaics art class at the Chicago
Mosaic School, a non-profit school that teaches mosaic art and
design. It is located in Ravenswood Corridor on Chicago’s North Side.

My teacher’s name is Ahmed and he recently completed an installation of a mosaic
in the newly renovated sanctuary at Mary Seat of Wisdom Catholic Church in Park
Ridge. (At right is one of his pieces.) He is a brilliant mosaic artist and has us in pieces
with his jokes (get it, mosaic, pieces?). I had to learn how to cut with fine snippers
glass and porcelain and other material into small squares and other geometric
shapes. Cutting hard material is laborious and less than creative. The pieces are
jagged and will never fit together in the same way ever again. The process is steeped
in metaphor. As I break the pieces apart, I lament the brokenness in parts of my life.
I wonder if the mosaic I will create will have any particular beauty or attractiveness
once I am done. Will I find wholeness?

In the weeks of Lent, as we gather for
worship and prayer, study groups and conversation, I can see within the
beautiful images of John August Swanson’s paintings a lot of brokenness
– individual pieces of color – lighter and darker hues of green, red, yellow,
blues and browns. Close up they are all a myriad of dots; farther away
they are one composition, a work of art. Like a mosaic, Swanson’s work is
brokenness transformed into wholeness to create a blessing to eye and
heart.

I am hoping that for you this Lenten season can be a time of quiet or
focused attention on the pieces of your life – dark and light, light and
heavy, ugly and beautiful, habitual and random – that you wish to be made into one whole. Are you finding more
jagged edges? Are you working too hard at putting back something that will never fit right again? Does it need a new
frame, a new look, a new start?

As Easter approaches and the days of Holy Week (March 20-27), consider the ways Jesus’ wondrous love may bring
you to a greater wholeness. Take up his example of healing, serving, saving, caring and changing what was into what
can be, a pile of broken tiles into a beautiful mosaic representing a resurrection of faith in your life and a new found
wholeness. May you share that love with someone who finds the world particularly unlovely and unloving. Blessings
to you for the remainder of our Lenten season.

See you in church,

Pastor David

Jennifer Calito is a middle school teacher at Pui Tak Christian School in Chinatown. She
grew up attending Glenview United Methodist Church where she was involved in youth

pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership. Her family includes husband Raul Calito,
son Christian Calito, and two daughters Jasmine and Kaylee. Jennifer enjoys many hobbies
including reading, singing, and knitting. She also enjoys a variety of Christian music from

loves cruising and snorkeling in the Caribbean!

Jennifer will begin her ministry among us on March 1. The Staff Parish Relations Committee
gives thanks for the congregation’s prayers through our search process. Again, we give thanks for the work of Leah
Cozad who has served as our interim youth leader.

News from Planned Giving

“For the Lord is good, his steadfast love endures forever,
his faithfulness continues through all generations.” --- Psalm 100:5

“Through all generations” is a powerful concept and one that is at the heart of the Planned Giving Committee’s
