SUMMER 2022 | LI HOME Magazine | 7

Welcome HOME I t’s summertime, and the living is easy. Especially
if you dive into a crisp, rippling pool every chance
In the you get. Sure, we’re surrounded by water every-
where you look, but Long Islanders have a particular
8 | LI HOME Magazine | SUMMER 2022 love for the personal swimmin’ holes that bring such
pleasure—not to mention beauty to the landscape—to
their homes.

The tradition is not as old as one might imagine.
In a post–World War II America where suburban
communities—inspired by Long Island’s very own
Levittown—were springing up in the 1950s and
making home ownership possible for the masses, the
notion of the perfect backyard was born. Alongside
swing sets and charcoal grills, few amenities defined
this outdoor extension of the dream home like the
swimming pool.

In the decades that followed, pools evolved in size,
shape and sheer magnitude. Above ground, inground,
semi-inground, waterfalls, infinity edges, underwater
music systems...the options and amenities are endless.
As are the fun and fascinating facts you can break out
at your next pool party. To paraphrase Plato, a person
“is not learned until he can read, write, and swim.” Or
at least until they’ve memorized these tidbits:

• There are more than 10.5 million swimming pools in
America, with Phoenix topping the charts for the city with
the most pools—32.7% of all homes have one.

• The most famous house in America—the White House—
did not have an outdoor swimming pool until Gerald
Ford built one in 1975. An indoor pool was built for
Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933.

• Historians believe the first swimming pool, the Great
Bath of Mohenjo-daro in what is now Pakistan, was
constructed around 2600 B.C. It had multiple entry stairs
and a surrounding deck.

• Gaius Maecenas of Rome built the first heated pool, in
the 1st century B.C.

• Gunite was invented in 1907 by taxidermist Carl E. Akley,
the same year the first above-ground pool in the U.S.
was reportedly put up in Philadelphia. The first gunite
inground pool was not built until 1940.

• The Guinness Book of World Records tells us that the
world’s largest swimming pool is found at the San
Alfonso del Mar resort in Algarroba, Chile. The pool
covers an area of 19.77 acres and can hold 66 million
gallons of water.

• More than 8 out of 10 pools use a chlorine system to
keep the water clean. The chlorine filtration system for
pools was invented in 1910 at Brown University.

• Google searches for the phrase “pool installation”
increased 49% across the U.S. in the first year of the
COVID-19 pandemic.

• According to HouseLogic, a pool may increase a home’s
sale value by as much as 7%.

As for the enjoyment of a pool during a Long
Island summer, well, it’s hard to slap a price on that.
So put on that bathing suit, drop your towel on the
lounge chair and come on in, the water’s fine…

Real Talk Just Ask That?

Did You Really When it comes to real estate, no question is too crazy. Or maybe it is.

o describe the recent past in the Long Island real estate market as crazy would be
as understated as calling oceanfront property on Dune Road a decent location. The
meteoric rise in sale prices, the bidding wars, the challenge of limited inventory, the
downs and ups of mortgage rates…it’s been a wild ride filled with things we’ve never
seen before. Well, at least some of us. As our gathering of local real estate professionals
share the craziest questions they’ve ever been asked about real estate, it seems some
people have seen and heard it all.

Elizabeth Markovic

Compass Real Estate

I truly believe there is no crazy question. Every person has
different knowledge levels, different needs, etcetera, so it’s
really hard for me to pick one. My answer has and always will
be that there is no crazy question one can ask.

Ray Pearson

Cobbleridge Realty Corp.

There are too many to recall that are not G-rated. I guess the
“oddest” would have to be about ghosts. This one lady and her
family showed up to the first of four homes that we were seeing
that day with a giant iPad. I never saw one that large before. She
took one step in the house and said, “No, this is not for us.” I
said okay, no problem, we have three more to see.

We went to the next one and the same thing happened. We
then went to the third home and, wouldn’t you know, I received
the same reaction. I asked politely, “Why are you saying no
to the homes after just taking one step inside the home?”
Something I probably should have asked after the first one.

She said, “You keep showing us homes with ghosts.” I was a bit
puzzled, since I didn’t know I was doing that. She then showed
me the iPad, with these blue dots floating around on the screen
that represented ghosts. She said, “Do you know if the next
home has any ghosts?” I said, “Honestly, I really don’t know, but
I do know of a place I’m going right after this that has spirits.”

The craziest question I get is, “Did anyone ever die in
the house? I don’t want to buy a house if anyone has ever
passed away here!” The way I see it, if someone died of
old age in the house and not in a hospital, that is great!
Most of the time you don’t know the answer to that
question. How strange.

Dee Dee Brix

Compass Real Estate

The craziest question I’ve ever been asked in real estate
is if the seller will take $500,000 cash ‘under the table’.
There are several reasons why I would never be a part of
that, not to mention I want the sale price to be accurate
because I’m proud of the prices I bring to my sellers.

Agustina DeLa Cruz

“Can I go ahead and get started with the painting and
stuff that needs to get done in this house but not move
in and sleep here until we close?”

Vincent Bonica

Coach Realtors

A customer asked if they could swap houses?

Which I replied, “Swapping houses works only if both
parties agree. It would be best to list your home on the
open market and I will find you a buyer. Once the home
sells, we will take the monies from the sale and put it
towards the purchase of a new home”.

structure torn down stepped in.
After petitioning for landmark
status for two years, they suc-
ceeded in 1987, and saved the
building.

McDonald’s agreed to refur-
bish the mansion to its former
glory — including gingerbread-
house details— on the outside
as long as it was allowed to add
a drive-thru, which it was. The
company installed standard
franchise guts — a kitchen with
fryers, shake machines, and griddles to make burgers, hot cakes,
and sausage; colorful plastic furniture; and all the trimmings of
your standard McDonald’s —which were gift-wrapped with an
original double grand staircase that leads to an area that can be
rented for parties.
And since then, it’s become a neighborhood staple.

“I remember seeing it get built. I loved going there with my
kids” said lifelong New Hyde Park resident Renee Guthart. “We
would sit in that all-glass room. It was so special.”

The first owners, Lawrence and Joan Anderer, said they were
taking a big chance franchising a McDonald’s back in the ’90s,
but considered the deal a win-win-win: McDonald’s got its
restaurant, the community saved a historic landmark, and the
Anderer family have made a living for two decades — while giv-
ing many New Hyde Park kids their first chance at a real job.

“People knock getting a Mcdonald’s job,” he told Patch.”“But
you can go to work with enthusiasm and learn as much as you can.”

There is value in keeping historic buildings fossilized in their
original state, as it gives us the closest glimpse into the past; but
there is another kind of beauty that stems from repurposing
these historical landmarks, one that can best be described by
those that ended up frequent the McDonald’s on a regular basis.

“Every Sunday my husband and I and four other couples
would go to the McDonald’s after church. We had so much
fun,” said 89-year-old Helena Swierkosz, who has lived in
New Hyde Park for 45-year years. “We could stay as long as
we wanted to. We talked and laughed for hours. It was such a
good time in our lives.”

Your Home
Gets Only One
Chance to
Make a First
Impression

By Alexa Anderwkavich

Your home is an
extension of yourself. And
just like you, your home
gets only one chance to
have a great first showing.
This does not begin the
moment anybody steps
foot inside, but rather out
front, where your home
gets its first best chance
to show off to visitors,
passers-by or, when the
time comes, potential
buyers.

It’s called curb appeal and
it’s always in style. Even
better, it’s perpetually
the right time to take on
a project that can add a
visual boost and some
value. What are you
waiting for?

The Front
Door Fix

The front door welcomes everyone
to your home, and you want
it to catch their eyes and pull
them in. This can be achieved by
simply adding a pop of color, an
adornment or playing around with
the woodwork.

Don’t shy away from bold colors
or styles; a bright red door draws
the eye, as do rustic entryways with
intricate carvings. If you don’t want
to replace your current door, simply
painting or staining your old one
while freshening up the hardware
can do wonders for its appearance.
You can also add glass features,
such as crystal or stained glass.
This allows an array of colors and
patterns to pool into your doorway
via natural light, so it can be enjoyed
both from inside and outside of the
house.

Even easier, you can always add
some door decor like seasonal
wreaths, or top off your door with a
tasteful set of house numbers that
come in various metals, typefaces
and designs to suit your style.

Mailbox Makeover

Often overlooked, the mailbox is just as much a part of the house as
any other facet of your home. Hand-me-down mailboxes from previous
homeowners are not uncommon, but consider making a mailbox your
own. Some homeowners design theirs as a replica of the actual house or
other quirky, creative touches, but sometimes all that’s needed is to swap
it out with something new and more contemporary.

The

Having a clear way to the

of your house. Whether it
is stepping stones, a gravel

to be something clearly
showing the way. You can
enhance your walkway

NO LIVE COPY OR LIVE PHOTOS IN THIS SPACE Light the Way

There is nothing more inviting and
warm than a light (or lights!) at the
front of your home. This is another
aspect of the house that you can have
fun with.

First, think of where you’d like to
place your lights. Consider the
distance of the door from where you
and your guests would enter. You
might want to light up the pathway
as well as your porch or door. If you’re
lighting a path, there are numerous
solar-powered lights that get staked
into the ground. Keep it sleek with
metal trimmings or floor lights,
whimsical with lanterns, or artistic
with blown glass.

Next, choose your ambiance with
the tone of the light. There are warm
(yellow and orange hues), cool (blue
hue), and color-changing options.
There are different kinds of bulbs as
well, with LED (not only an energy-
efficient go-to but powerful and long-
lasting) available in vintage coiled
bulbs, modern looks and even solar
powered. Some lights can also be
controlled via apps, which offer timer
and color settings to adjust to your
mood with just the tap of a finger.

NO LIVE COPY OR LIVE PHOTOS IN THIS SPACE Better in Balance

It is in our nature to be attracted to things that are even and balanced. Symmetry can be
incredibly alluring, so it is best to do things in twos: If you add a light on one side, for
example, do the same to the other. Too much attention on one area can be off-putting.
And in this case “go big or go home” need not apply — you are already home — so it’s
usually best to stick to good things in moderation. If you are to add a “feature piece” in
one part of your front yard, make it an element that can be balanced out on the opposite
side as well. Remember, you want to make a good impression.

Five Gold Coast properties situated in
the village of Sands Point on the pen-

Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby — where
Daisy Buchanan’s beacon made its nightly
call to Gatsby across the harbor — have
hit the market, giving bibliophiles with
the means the chance to own in an area as
revered as the author who wrote about it.
In Fitzgerald’s Roaring Twenties world,
East Egg was the home of old money and
the mansion Daisy shared with her cheat-
ing husband, Tom, was a symbol of how
far out of reach she had become to her
former flame Gatsby. The home described
in the book was based on the former Gug-
genheim estate that still stands today and
is just a stone’s throw away.
“This is as good as it gets on Nas-

Leatherman of Leatherman Homes, who
has the listing of this property in one of
Long Island’s most storied locales. “And
it’s a unique opportunity, with five residen-

ambience the best suits your home
and lifestyle. “With gas heaters,
you can choose from a variety
of fire pits, outdoor fireplaces,
infrared wall mounted heaters,
standing infrared heaters, standing
pyramid flame heaters and more,”
Lawrence says. “These units can be
hooked up directly to a natural gas
line or to a portable propane tank.
Some even include hidden storage
features for an external propane
tank.”

For that old-school sensation,
nothing is as rustic and comforting
as the crackling sounds and smoky
scent wafting from a wood-
burning fire pit. “The gas firepits
are convenient — there’s no
cleaning, there’s no soot. They’re
nice because you’re not smelling
like wood for three days after,”
Puma says with a laugh. “But the
wood-burning ones are great, too
— you get the crackling, kids can
do the s’mores in them, all of that.
So both of them have become very
popular, and a great way to spend a
night outdoors at home.”

Mellow vs. Musical
Fire pits create can create an

technologies can also get the
blood, and the music, pumping.
“Some are sound reactive and
come with a full sound system
with multi-colored LED accent
lights,” Lawrence offers. “The
flames move to the beat of the
music.”

And the music isn’t limited to fire
pits. Outdoor fireplaces now also
have the option of getting a groove
on while giving off some heat.
“Accompanied by a vivacious and
eye-catching flame, the units are
offered in a polished stainless-steel
finish for outdoor applications.”

HOME Cooking
Meet Long Island’s – and America’s

By Alexa Anderwkavich

I magine walking the streets of Paris, when, on a
whim, you pick up a freshly baked baguette and
cheese from the local market and head up to the
Eiffel Tower to enjoy the view, good company,
and a delectable snack.

Sounds like a dream, right?
But this was Long Island’s own Corrina Cafarelli’s reality
during her time studying abroad in Europe, and her first
introduction to the delicacy known as charcuterie board
craftsmanship.
While in Paris, one of her favorite things to do was go to
the market, grab cheese and a fresh baguette and some
charcuterie — that’s “cooked meat” in French, served cold and
laid out decoratively on a wooden board — and
head over to the park surrounding the
Eiffel Tower with friends.

Fast-forward to today: That love of cold cuts has made her a hot commodity
as The Charcuterie Queen, who, since 2020 has been selling her own
artisanal charcuterie boards that have become wildly popular on social
media, leading to her appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show.”

“When I was abroad, we would take whatever flat surface we could find
and throw everything on it,” she said.

The beauty of this craft is finding your way. There are so many different
combinations, ways to cut products, and placements. It’s about trying
different techniques and foods and discovering your own style.

“I’ve taken inspiration from other charcuterie companies as well,” she
said. “Like, ‘Oh wow! I really like the way she cut that orange, little
things like that, and make it your own. I’m always growing and learning.”

The Coronation of Corrina
Even though she loved how her mastering of the charcuterie arts was
bringing people together and providing her with an enjoyable and
fulfilling way to spend her time, Cafarelli did not anticipate ever selling
her own boards, let alone starting her own company. But during the
pandemic, when she brought a board to some friends, they told her it
was time to get into the business.

At first, she thought the idea was crazy. At the time, the St. John’s
University graduate with a degree in business management was working
as a marketing director for a small cosmetics company on Long Island.
But after two months of hounding, she decided to do some research,
