Passion for the streets

We drive them. We walk them. We live on them. We work, we play — every aspect of our lives can
be tied straight back to a street. They are the heart of our community. You can't get anywhere un-
less you're on a street. In this year's Living in the Five Towns, we explore the very streets that make
these communities what they are. From the businesses, to the parks, to all the popular gathering
spots. There's a story behind every street, and we hope you'll enjoy these stories, learning more
about the communities all of us love.

doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking

to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of communities that may have

struggled at times, but communities that also are winning.

Richner Communications, which owns the Herald, was proud to do its

part, too. Richner offered thousands of businesses grants at the height of the

pandemic so that the merchants — the lifeblood of the community — could

carry on.

Now that we have emerged from the pandemic with vaccines and medical

advances in our arsenal, we are ready to charge ahead with optimism and

renewed vigor.

In this edition of our annual Living In the Five Towns, we look at all that

is wonderful about these lively communities. A special publication of your

hometown newspaper, it’s published in cooperation with the Hewlett-

Woodmere Business Association. We are honored to mark another year as the

association's official publication.

We hope you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy

reading the Nassau Herald 52 weeks a year.

On the opposite side of Central
Avenue stands Kulanu Academy, a
school for youth and young adults
with special needs, which once housed
the parochial school connected to
St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church
on the northwest corner of Central
Avenue.

At the intersection of Central
and Cedarhurst avenues — the main
four corners of the shopping area —
pedestrians can contemplate their
next destination as motorists decide to
pull into either a parking space on the
street or one of the off-street parking
lots.

Washington Avenue serves as the
dividing line between Cedarhurst and
Lawrence, and on the southwest corner
stands the regal Lawrence-Cedarhurst
firehouse. Lawrence village’s business
district is not as expansive as its
neighbors, but can boast being home
to the National Council of Jewish
Women-Peninsula Section offices, and
the charitable organization’s thrift
shop. The headquarters of the Achiezer
Community Resource Center is also
there.

Further west is Peninsula Public
Library, Village Hall and Temple Israel
of Lawrence.

“It means a lot,” Lawrence mayor
Alex Edelman said about the village’s
section of Central Avenue. “We only
occupy a small portion, but we are very
proud of it, and the stores spent a lot of
money fixing up and maintaining their
buildings. We have a lot people coming
to the restaurants from other areas.”

“ Our Rehabilitation Director and Therapists are what makes Margaret
Tietz special. Both Mazal Fuzailov, OTR/L, our Rehab Director and Jennifer
Aneles (below) have been part of our team for more than 5 years with
specialty working with stroke, cardiac, and orthopedic conditions.

Here is what our patients have to say about our team: “I was unable to
move my foot and get off the bed. I didn’t know if I would ever walk again. On a
scale of 1 to 10, my pain was an 11. The care from Jennifer and Mazal was very
special and gave me an excellent rehab experience. She strengthened my leg
and I could actually walk again. I had a super team and a very good stay. - SL,

to New York City
use the Far Rockaway branch
that includes Far Rockaway,
Inwood, Lawrence, Cedarhurst,
Woodmere, Hewlett and Gibson
as its scheduled stops.

The branch begins at Valley
Interlocking, just east of the
Valley Stream station. Then the
line heads south and southwest
through southwestern
Nassau County, ending at Far
Rockaway. The line also serves
the Atlantic Branch with service
to Brooklyn.
