Despite how iconic the Riverdale Monu- Van Cortlandt House Page 34 Wave Hill Page 28
ment is, Tieck — in his 1968 history book
on the community — barely dedicates a
few paragraphs to the structure. Even then,
it’s part of a chapter focused more on the
history of firefighting in the neighborhood,
with the bell — and ultimately the monu-
ment — merely a passing reference.
Rev. Tieck sadly left us long ago. But the
borough’s current historian, Lloyd Ultan,
seems to have a much better appreciation
of the tower. On the eve of it being listed
with the National Register of Historic Places
in 2012, Ultan called the tower a “distinct
monument that is a symbol of Riverdale
itself. Lord knows how many hundreds of
people go around it — it’s in the middle of
the traffic circle!”
And alas, that brings us back to the world
that Robert Moses created for us. That no
symbol in this city is complete without a car
driving around — or, if possible, through —
it, just because, well, cars.
Yet, the park is a popular gathering space
for when we are happy celebrating the start
of Hanukkah with the borough’s largest
menorah, or when we are mourning, finding
serenity in the middle of all that traffic for
any number of vigils.
No one is ever going to include the River-
dale Monument as one of the world’s most
spectacular bell towers. Most of those can be
found in Belgium, actually — like the Belfry
of Tournai, or the Belfry of Bruges. But
that’s OK, because we don’t need the River-
dale bell tower to be extraordinary to the
world. It’s extraordinary to us. It’s our gem.
It’s our symbol. The moment you see our
bell tower, you instantly think of Riverdale.
And Fieldston. And Spuyten Duyvil. And re-
ally, Kingsbridge and Marble Hill, too.
Bells were used to bring communities
together — either by physically summoning
everyone to a square, or just creating that
shared experience no matter where in the
community we are.
We’ll likely never hear the massive bell
stolen from a Mexican monastery ever
again. But that’s OK, because it’s the tower
that bring us together. And will for genera-
tions to come.

Kingsbridge Heights Community Center
When the 50th Precinct said it was moving out of its classically designed building at 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace in 1972, three amazing women —
Mary McLoughlin, Patricia Burns and Janet Athanasidy — decided they would move in with their own community center. And 50 years later, not only
does the old building continue to stand out in the neighborhood, but KHCC has become an institution in of itself.

Henry Hudson Bridge
It stretches 2,208 feet spanning some 143 feet above the Spuyten Duyvil Creek. While its construction in the
mid-1930s was controversial, the fact is there may not have ever been a Riverdale like there is today without
it. The bridge was designed by David Steinman, who would go on to cross other treacherous divides with his
engineering work in countries all around the world. Before the pandemic, 2.3 million cars crossed the bridge
between the Bronx and Manhattan each year, paying tolls of between $3 and $7.50 — a cost that was just
10 cents when it welcomed its first vehicles on Dec. 12, 1936.

They are easily two of the most famous homes in the
Bronx — Wave Hill House and Glyndor House. Those
mansions, the spectacular botanical garden, and the most
amazing views of the Hudson River and the Palisades,
all make up Wave Hill. The Perkins family donated the
property to New York City in 1960, and has been listed
with the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.

Riverdale Neighborhood House
One of 40 settlement houses in New York City — designed to bridge social and economic gaps in struggling urban neighborhoods — philanthropist and pioneer Grace
Dodge founded Riverdale Neighborhood House in 1872. Not only does it continue to provide a number of community services for neighbors of all ages, but it’s also been
the birthplace of some key local institutions like the Riverdale Library, Riverdale Senior Services, and, of course, The Riverdale Press.

Henry Hudson Statue
It’s likely one of the oldest landmarks in the region, occupying Spuyten Duyvil’s
Henry Hudson Park — and creating this likeness of the famed 17th century
explorer ultimately took decades. The 100-foot column was constructed in 1912,
unveiled in a ceremony presided over by Cleveland H. Dodge. But the man behind
the idea, Karl Bitter, was run over by a car, and the project died with him. Until
1938. That’s when Robert Moses stepped in, declared the area around the column
a park, and commissioned Karl Gruppe to create the bronze statue of Hudson,
meant to create yet another symbol along Moses’ prized Henry Hudson Parkway.

Van Cortlandt House
Built by slaves in 1748, this is the old house still standing in the Bronx — so old, its overnight guests include who would become the first President of the United States
himself, George Washington. It was built by Frederick Van Cortlandt on land his family had owned since the 17th century, but he never got to see it completed, dying in
1749. The house and the vast land surrounding it was sold to New York City in 1889 in what would become Van Cortlandt Park.

ARC has been supporting and advocating for resident co-op shareholders and condominium owners in
Riverdale and throughout the Bronx for more than 37 years. ARC provides a continual flow of needed
information to the public through an up-to-the-minute website that informs and educates shareholders,
building managers and community residents, as well as those considering a move to our neighborhood.
In recent years, ARC
• Developed a new website, to provide important information that is easily accesible to all
• Kept everyone informed and up-to-date with pertinent information throughout the COVID-19 era
• Convinced Con Edison to bring natural gas lines to Riverdale to provide a clean source of energy
• Represented all co-ops and condos in negotiations for labor contracts with Local 32BJ
• Lobbyed for NYS Property Tax Abatement for co-op and condo owners
• Presented Conflict Mediation Techniques for Boards and Shareholders
• Explained Fiscal Management and the Fiduciary Responsibility of co-op boards
• Introduced Verizon FIOS to Riverdale as an alternative communication option to Cablevision
• Advocated for the New York City Clean Heat Program in our area’s buildings
• Has worked continuously with legislators to retain co-op board autonomy
• Advised on How to Negotiate New Management Contracts
• Sought FEMA funding from Congress for co-ops after Hurricane Sandy
• Modeled a Fair Admissions Policy for Boards of Directors
• Updated members annually on Legal Issues and Current Rulings from the Courts
Each year nearly all of the buildings in Riverdale and many from throughout the Bronx proudly join
ranks with their neighbors to ensure that they are represented by ARC. Who joins ARC? Take a look:
