SONOMA & MARIN 2023 3 Dear Readers, Welcome to the 2023 edition of Born to Age for Sonoma and Marin Counties. I am proud to be your new publisher and to serve these counties, which are great places to live, work, raise a family, and retire. While the Born to Age office is based in San Mateo County, we consider ourselves just a stone’s throw away from the Golden Gate, Marin, and the neighboring communities. Here at Born to Age, our goal is to make resources known and more accessible to seniors, their family members, and those in the elder care industry. This year, we are proud to have a wide variety of directory listings, display advertisements, and informative articles to aid you and your loved ones through the process of aging. I look forward to hearing your feedback and working with you in the future. Sincerely, Annamarie Buonocore Publisher Born to Age Sonoma/Marin Counties FROM THE PUBLIISHER P.O. 2 4 BORN TO AGE E mmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns first received international acclaim with his 1990 documentary series, The Civil War. He also earned two Academy Award nominations for his earlier works, Brooklyn Bridge (1981) and The Statue of Liberty (1985). On October 16 (8pm ET), he will launch on PBS, The American Buffalo, a two-part, fourhour series, that will take viewers on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history. Burns explains, “This is a project that my staff and I had been thinking about for over three decades. Our desire is to advance the story of the American buffalo beyond just being an historical parable.” Indeed! Burns and his team have revealed the significant dramatic role the buffalo has played in the development of United States. The series traces the animal’s evolution, its significance to the Great Plains, its near demise, and its vital relationship to the Indigenous People of North America. Burns’ series co-producer, Julie Dunfey, recalls, “We started in May of 2020, filming bison, conducting our interviews, and doing additional research. We were up and down the northern and southern Plains. We filmed a lot in Montana, Texas, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. We tapped a lot of talent out there. It really enriches the visual and historical part of the film.” The first two-hour episode dramatically chronicles the unmitigated tragedy that occurred with the westward movement of U.S. citizens in 19th century. The buffalo, numbering an estimated 30 million in the early 1800s, began declining for a variety of reasons, including the lucrative buffalo robe trade, and the steady westward settlement of an expanding United States. The legendary Western showman, William F, Cody, who served for five years as a civilian scout for the U.S. Army after the Civil War, during the Indian Wars, received his nickname, Buffalo Bill when, by the age of 23, he personally had killed 4,404 bison to feed the soldiers in his company. In just over a decade the number of bison collapsed from millions to fewer than a thousand, most of them penned in zoos or in private herds. This represented one of the most dramatic examples of our ability to destroy the natural world. By 1900, the American buffalo teetered on the brink of disappearing forever, and the Native people of the Plains entered one of the most traumatic moments in their existence. But the other, lesser-known part of this story, told in the film’s second episode (airing October 17), follows the efforts of the diverse and unlikely combination of characters who set out to save the species from extermination and eventually turned it into a national effort. There is Old Lady Horse, a Kiowa woman who describes her tribe’s spiritual and practical relationship with the bison, and Charles Jesse “Buffalo” Jones, a mercenary hunter who took part in the final slaughter of millions of buffalo, but then turned to rescuing motherless calves and starting a small herd that would eventually provide seed stock for others. Crusading conservationist George Bird Grinnell’s editorials explore how central Yellowstone National Park’s small herd contributed greatly to the survival of the species. There were also famous, influential powerful people like former big game hunter, Theodore Roosevelt, and the legendary Texas cattleman, Charles Goodnight, whose actions provide compelling proof that we are equally capable of pulling back from the brink of environmental catastrophe if we set our minds to it. Ken Burns became fascinated by the individuals that were completely transformed by their relationship with the buffalo. “There is a tendency to freeze people at one particular moment. But there are many individuals, all of whom undertake and undergo remarkable transformations and changes. Buffalo Bill, one of the most wellknown showmen in history, became quite active in the efforts to revive the buffalo. Quanah Parker, a half-breed Apache chief, would go from an attacker of the early white settlements in the Texas panhandle, to being a kind of man of peace, bringing his people into the reservation, then hosting Theodore Roosevelt in advance of his creating portions of what is now Oklahoma into the Witchitaw Mountains bison game reserve. THE AMERICAN BUFFALO A NEW PBS SERIES BY KEN BURNS Written by Julio Martinez

SONOMA & MARIN 2023 2 5 “So the fact that we have brought the bison back from extinction is itself an accomplishment. But we’ve begun to see, as we were finishing the film, that the film we were making was really the first two acts of the three-act play, if you will, because at the end of the day to save a species as a zoo animal or as an exhibition animal in a corral isn’t the same as saving them as wild and free, and that’s now going on.” Directed by Ken Burns, the series was written by Dayton Duncan, who is also the author of the companion book, “Blood Memory: The Tragic Decline and Improbable Resurrection of the American Buffalo,” to be published by Knopf. Julianna Brannum, a member of the Quahada band of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma, served as consulting producer. The series is narrated by actor peter Coyote.
