are you ever
too old to
go back to
school?
by Dean Dowell
It’s estimated that by the year 2030 the number of Americans 65 and
older will reach an astonishing 72 million. That number is up from
40.2 million in 2010. With life expectancy increasing for both men
and women, many are looking for second careers after retirement.
Up until now many colleges and universities have not geared education
opportunities to those individuals over 55.
Laura L. Carstensen, founding director of the Stanford Center on
Longevity states, “It makes no sense, to have an educational system that
ends in the 20s when people are likely to be working into their 80s.”
Times are changing. Many colleges across the country are focusing
on helping many alumni prepare for second careers. In the past,
educational opportunities have been limited to continuing education
programs, but more formal courses of study are now becoming
available.
Taking previous education and life experiences in account, many
institutions are reducing the number of classes required to obtain
a degree. For example, The American Association of Community
College’s Plus 50 Initiative, concentrates on programs for people 50 and
older.
Going back to school is not an idea that’s new to the residents of Lake
Providence. Many residents volunteer in schools, have started second
careers, or taking the steps to continue their education. We wanted to
share a few of their stories. ◄

LINDA RISING
I am definitely one of those people who went back to school later in life.
I have a lot of education and many degrees, but my last educational
adventure started when I was 47. My only child was set to head off to
college, so I decided the time was right to get my Ph.D. in Computer
Science. I applied at several universities and asked my husband (Karl
Rehmer) to find a job in one of the cities where universities had accepted
me. I don’t know many husbands who would have initiated a job hunt
at that point in their careers, but he did. He found a job in Phoenix,
Arizona, so I went to school at Arizona State. My goal was to “finish
by 50” and I just barely made it. I got my degree one month before my
50th birthday. That was 24 years ago and I am still working in that field.
Sticking with that program was one of the hardest things I have ever
done. I was not only older than all the other Ph.D. students, but also
older than all my professors, and when I started my research, I learned
I was older than my advisor’s mother. I have been lucky enough and
healthy enough to keep working and enjoy what I do, so I have no plans
to retire. ◄
BOBBIE SANTRY
“You will never finish college!,” cried my Mom when I announced that I
was going to get married in the middle of my junior year. She was right...at
least partially right. Three years later, with two children and another one
on the way - I graduated with a degree in teaching and Library Science
at New York University in Albany. But I wasn’t finished. After moving
to Phoenix, Arizona I received a Masters in Education Administration at
Arizona State University. By then my mother was pleased. But, I hadn’t
finished yet! While living in Salt Lake City, Utah, I received a doctorate
in Educational Administration from the University of Utah. At the age
of 49, I was finally finished!
Originally I was motivated by a desire to please my mother, who was a
widow, sacrificing much for me and my brother to attend college. Then,
it became a burning need to know all that I could in order to be the best
possible at my job. Thus an advanced degree in Library Science. When
promoted to an administrator, I wanted to be the best at that job too!
Eventually, it became my passion in understanding the bigger picture
of how schools operated, and how they could be improved...thus the
doctorate.
As I look back on my career, I realized that I really did not ever finish my
education. While an Administrator in the College of Education at the
University of New Mexico, (yes we moved a lot) it was my job to bring in
the leaders of educational reform to work with our local teachers. I was
still learning...never finishing–from these special people. ◄

JOLENE MUNDIE
Growing up, like many women of my generation, I dreamed of being a
nurse. By the age of 18 I was married and found myself the mother of
four by 22. Back in those days in order to become a nurse you had live
at a nursing school in to pursue a career, with a family to care for that
was not a possibility.
Fast forward a few years and I found myself 39 years old with all four
kids in college. I heard about a program where I could receive my LPN
license in 12 months. After completion of the program I worked as a
LPN about a year. A local community college offered an accelerated
12 month program that allowed you to complete studies to become an
Registered Nurse. I completed the program and ended up graduating
from college about the same time as my children.
It took a few years, but I was able to make my childhood dreams come
true. After receiving my degree I had the privilege of working in home
health care for the next 15 years. It’s never too late to make your dreams
come true. ◄

published 8 textbooks, holds several U.S. patents and performed the world’s first laser
artificial cornea implantation. He is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs
3D LASIK (age 18+), 3D Forever Young Lens Surgery (age 45+), 3D Laser Kamra (age
45+) and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (age 60+). He established a non-profit foundation
which provides sight restoration surgeries for indigent patients who otherwise would
never have the opportunity to receive them free-of-charge.
This is a story of one man’s inspirational journey, of turning fear, poverty, persecution
and prejudice into healing and love for others. It demonstrates how focus, determination,
humility and profound faith can inspire a life that, in turn, impacts that of countless others.

In appreciation for all that our Mount Juliet police Cards
do to protect our lifestyle and the lifestyle of every for Cops
resident in Mount Juliet, the Del Webb Lake
Providence Lifestyle Advisory Committee encouraged submitted by the Lifestyle Committee
all residents who would like to join in expressing
appreciation to our Mount Juliet police to donate a gift
card during the month of July. Gift cards were asked to
be in $10 values only and able to be redeemed locally
in Mount Juliet.
The community-YOU-responded and gift cards were
collected in large amounts daily. In an effort to keep
the focus on the police force and our appreciation
to them, to not keep the limelight on ourselves, the
Lifestyle Committee along with Neighborhood Watch
and Safety in attendance, presented the cards to Chief
Hambrick of the Mount Juliet Police Department at
our monthly Wake Up Wednesday in the lobby the first
Wednesday in August. These cards were intended to be
distributed to officers as a thank you or given to officers
to give out to people in the community they notice in
the act of a good deed.
How much money was raised by YOU? Four thousand,
one hundred and fifteen dollars ($4,115). The Chief
was initially without words in astonishment of the
community’s generosity. He then announced his
primary intentions for the cards were to reach Mount
Juliet’s underprivileged youth and to encourage them to
trust their city’s law enforcement.
The Lifestyle Advisory Committee wanted to support
and show our appreciation for the Mount Juliet Police
who protect the lifestyle of everyone in our Del Webb
Lake Providence community and our larger community
of Mount Juliet. Thank you for your contribution in
this effort. ◄
