slikarjev.

Pomemben preobrat v svojem kiparstvu je Drago Tršar napravil leta 1957 z množično pojmovano
skulpturo. S problematiko plastike množic je Tršar izvirno vstopil v sočasno svetovno kiparstvo. Temu
so sledila vabila na najpomembnejše svetovne razstave, Beneški bienale, Documento v Kasselu, Mid-
delheim park v Antwerpenu in Guggenheim Museum v New Yorku.

THE LIFE OF THE ACADEMIC DRAGO TRŠAR

Drago Tršar was born in 1927 at Planina pri Rakeku. In 1944 he took part in the Gorše Drawing School
and made sculptures with sculptor Boris Kalin, thus turning to sculpting. In 1951 he took his degree at
the Academy of Fine Arts of Ljubljana. During 1956 to 1957 he was the only sculptor member of the
Group 53, which was comprised of young contemporary painters.

1957 brought about a radical change in his sculpting trough a mass-perceived sculpture, and it was
with the theme of sculpture crowds that Tršar entered the contemporary world of sculpting, followed
by invitations to take part in the most important world exhibitions such as The Biennial of Venice, Docu-
mento of Kassel, Middleheim Park of Antwerpen and The Guggenheim Museum of New York.

In 1960 he became assistant professor at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts, in 1967 he was promoted
to senior lecturer, in 1974 to associate professor and in 1978 he was promoted to full-time professor
at the academy, where he held the position of Head of the Department of Sculpture. In 1969 he co-
founded “Group 69” and in 1991 became a member of the Slovenian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Apart from sculpting he has also created drawings, graphics and sculptural ceramics.
